Funny how Sony increased the price of the console this generation two times: first with a 50 increase, and then by reducing the overall bulk and materials they use while maintaining the same price. Ouch.
If Sony just reduced the distance between the dye and the cold plate of the cooler they wouldn't have to use so much liquid metal and they would drastically reduce the risk of spillage and pretty much totally eliminate the risks of hot spots and dry spots. They're basically just using it incorrectly which is why it is having issues. My main computer has had liquid metal between the IHS and the dye on my CPU for over 5 years and I've never had to replace it or had any hot spots develop. The OG PS5 is a behemoth. If I hadn’t bought the slim one, there was no way the OG would fit in my media cabinet horizontally. I would have had to keep it vertically standing next to my TV. Needing to log to the internet to use the disc drive is a terrible idea. After PS5 support/shop is taken down, there will be no way to use a new drive with the console. Important because many people want to keep their consoles for decades as they like playing on original hardware. What if their disc drive fails in 10 or 20 years time? Well not entirely RIP, it just becomes a digital only console at that point . . . but only good for games already on the console/storage as the shop is long since dead at this point.
