If Sony just reduced the distance between the dye and the cold plate of the cooler they wouldn't have to use so much liquid metal and they would drastically reduce the risk of spillage and pretty much totally eliminate the risks of hot spots and dry spots. They're basically just using it incorrectly which is why it is having issues. My main computer has had liquid metal between the IHS and the dye on my CPU for over 5 years and I've never had to replace it or had any hot spots develop. You would think they would cut a few dollars off considering it doesn’t have the stand anymore. Either way I recently picked up a second ps5 and decided to get the bigger one just because to me looks much better and the fact they’re discontinuing it.
Can confirm with the new height that the OG ps5 was a little too big to fit in my entertainment cubie, but the new one is only slightly larger then a ps4 which fits pretty comfy in there, so it's the right size for me. Still backwards compatible so going to consider getting one in the new year, maybe sooner if I can find a deal during black Friday. Will have to see.

However I just like the look of this “slim” unit better plus, I get a little more storage and a free spidey game. Also, since I still have my OG ps5 box and it’s minty clean, I can sell it on marketplace for 400. So realistically, I’m like 100 bucks or so out of pocket for the upgrade.
I have both series x and recently got the ps5 slim, when ever I game on the ps5 you can hear the fan coil whine and its annoying at night because i can hear it from 3-5 feet away, while the series x is dead silent, but the dual sense is just too good.
Needing to log to the internet to use the disc drive is a terrible idea. After PS5 support/shop is taken down, there will be no way to use a new drive with the console. Well not entirely RIP, it just becomes a digital only console at that point . . . but only good for games already on the console/storage as the shop is long since dead at this point.
