Surprised there isn't a thin mesh filter at the air intake. It would make it a bit easier to just vacuum out or clean the mesh, while reducing micro particle buildup and the possible need for a teardown for cleanout. I've seen these on PC cases and very little dust actually makes its way to the fan or inner system after a year of 24-7 being powered on. All in all, looks like a beast of a console. You're a brave soul doing such a teardown, much like with laptops, I can never get those thin ribbon cables back in place.
It's been said a lot on this channel that the disc drive was an afterthought and added on after but that seems to fly in the face of common sense and efficient console production, where if you're making two versions of a console you'd want to make them as similar as possible for cost and efficiency. If the only thing different between the two versions is the disc drive, it would be a huge waste to not use the same motherboard and general internal construction, and then just allow the disc drive to be mounted onto the main unit. Just my thoughts.
Do you remember when the Sony Japanese factory worker was holding one in his arms and everyone thought the picture was photo shop?. They looked at the PlayStation compared to his body. No one could believe it was that big. However, it is that big.
It's big but that japanese factory worker is probably like 5'6. Maximillion dude did his unboxing and it doesnt look as ridiculous cause he's 6'4. It's around the same width (horizontally) as a standard AV receiver, a few inches less in depth and about half the height.
Still waiting on some analysis of the other chips on these systems. There's 512MB of DDR4 near the SSD that's obviously a buffer, but it would be good to know if there's an ARM chip on there like the PS4. Also really want to see a die shot of the APU to compare against Series X|S and RX 6000.
@@austinfondren2590 the actual silicon chip itself is called a die. With the right equipment and skill it's possible to get an image of the actual integrated circuit etched into the die, showing structures like CPU and GPU cores, caches and the like. That's typically referred to as a "die shot".
@Apple it does a few small background tasks and has its own 256MB of DDR3 RAM. It was supposed to handle downloads while the console was in rest mode so the main APU could power down. It turned out not to be powerful enough though, so the main APU still remains powered.
@@TheKogunEnjou The videos they made aren’t really that good. They were measuring the outside of the console, rather than the inside, which isn’t very accurate, especially in the case of the PS5, where the panels are separate from the console.
@@kastaway-mtx It’s not a good comparison. The exhaust vents were ok but they should have at least taken off the Ps5 side panels. That would provide a better comparison. Hell, they should’ve just opened the back of the Xbox and seen the temps of the actual internals.
2 different companies. 2 different solutions to the same issues. It seems Microsoft had the better team in place to create a console. It looks like Sony just Frankensteined their machine and let it grow and grow and just said, "F it ... release it" while Microsoft took a puzzle and pieced it together in a way to keep it compact in a very thoughtful and efficient way.
You should. I remember when Bill Nye was cool back in the day. Now he is a jaded politically correct atheist hell bent on proving that he is right about everything.
I think it's nice that you can get that far before you get to a warranty sticker. I like to take my my ps4 apart from time to time just to clean it and get the dust out, dust build up can make you system run hotter. Taking the PS4 apart you don't get very far before you get to a warranty seal.
Damn the massive heatsink must have cost at least nearly $150-200 on its own on production cost alone. Would love to see a watercooling mod on this beast
That heatsink is really huge. I owned a Mugen on the cpu and an Accelero on the gpu and this thing here still looks large for me, and it's copper, wow.
I love and own both systems, but its obvious that Microsoft clearly had the more innovative and efficient design. The dual motherboard setup in the Series X is a much better choice.
As a PS5 owner I can say the Series X design is definitely more elegant. Jony Ive had this interesting design philosophy in his early days at Apple: let a product's form be true to its nature. I think Microsoft really took that to heart with the design of that machine -- the form is quite literally defined by the the shape and size of the cooling system inside. They've created an enclosure that simply directs airflow with a little extra size, material or design flourish as possible. And I really respect that almost austere dedication to function.
@@goldensun3551 I agree but that's because I thing the PS5 has less multimedia capabilities overall. They're both great systems and each have pros and cons. For me personally, more of my friends play on Xbox so I use my Xbox more, but both are great.
I say I am impressed by Sony's design but it's nothing next to the Xbox X. That design is simply more elegant, thoughtful and more modular. Far as servicing however maybe Sony is a little easier depending on the task at hand. Like simple dust cleaning might be easier on Xbox, but a thermal repasting clearly looks to be a much simpler task on the PlayStation as long as you know what your doing with liquid metal. Seriously awesome job.
What would happen if you just re-assembled it with the old liquid metal without replacing it? Asking in case I ever buy an used PS5 and the previous owner decided to fully take it apart.
@@jkrhu Thank you! When he said the power supply would be hard to replace. I just kept wondering why not just take out the entire cage board and all without disassembling it. I just didn't know what screws anchored it down to the shell and what screws kept the cage halves together.
Part of the reason why they use so much liquid metal is that the gallium in the LM can and will leech into the the copper, usually in the PC world you'd put on the standard amount and you'd then have to go top it off after about 6 months because enough of the gallium would have been leeched into the copper to actually cause issues, so being that this is a retail product and more specifically, something sold to people that may not necessarily be handy with a screwdriver or particularly techy, it's better to overprovision than it is to underprovision it like that

why no youtuber is talking about the materials and build quality ? I've had 8 consoles, and they didn´t feel as cheap as this machine :( The chassis, the mainboard, the connectors......
Man! Finally! Yes. The black plastic looks so cheap, really cheap, everything looks thin and not quality(except the DualSense). Wish Sony will have a better PS5 2.0 later. Looking forward to a new verison.
All of the quality plastics went into the DualSense controller. It seems they had no choice but to make the console itself out of recycled sandwich bags from the Sony cafeteria.
They should have also made the controller have adaptive thumbsticks so when you pull on something or walk against something, like in wind or water, it provides resistance to make it seem like the character is working harder to walk.
re: Warranty Stickers. The sticker itself is not illegal. There's nothing wrong with tamper evident stickers. The issue is that they cannot deny warranty service based solely on the fact the device has been opened. There has to be some kind of obvious damage to the system that came from the user working on or altering the system. Some companies do try to claim that merely because it's been opened that the warranty is voided, but that's the part that's not legal.

@@TheJadeFist not really the answer am looking for, got to be more specific, as the fan is taking air in from the side,
just like is it a centrifugal force? with a centrifugal direction?. only then is the question where that direction is going ?and whether that direction is obstructed., because all this determines if the cooling will be sufficient, or it might be sufficient, but it could be far more better if it was build differently. And Better cooling means better performance.
and how does the air flow in the box? the box has a curvature inside. the most important thing is how the air flow goes through the heatsink, is there counter flow or co-current?
I live in the uk and it’s nearly impossible to get a ps5 and watching you taking one apart is killing me.
@StevenF except this is his personal console, he didn't buy one just to dissect and take away from others... and he is very knowledgeable and experienced in this area. A lot of people like myself are very interested in what is inside of the console I am shelling out 500+ for.
We now know where all the pre-orders went😂
Sony must have gotten a great deal on a bunch of old dusty T1000s for their cooling system 🤐
the whole thing about warranty stickers is that the United States government deemed them illegal because the right to repair act.
Not true. Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act created in 1975 is the actual reason.
@@junkmail460 regardless, they're not legally binding. They only serve as a deterrent. They are legal though
Technically unenforceable not illegal. If the stickers where illegal you wouldn't see them because the companies would be breaking the law. They can legally still use them they can't void the warranty without a reason beyond the sticker being removed. Like nhuKer said above they are mostly used as a deterrent against less informed consumers.
@@loneponderer495 lol mostly. Yeah but the United States government is already suing Sony in Microsoft in Nintendo. PS Nintendo's starting to refuse to put warranty stickers.
The sticker serves the purpose of a checkpoint whether or not the console was opened. The sticker is not tighted to anything legal.

I'm probably the only one but the PS5 reminds me of the PS3 fat design
But fatter

Hopefully they do a slim very soon then I buy one
At least it doesn't sound like one when turned on!
@Charles Szasz it is a bit. I mean the design is awful. Ugly and cheap looking. Looks like a kids toy and it's bloody massive making it's ugliness seem worse.
That's why so many people have a problem with it. The games will be great and the console will be great I'm sure but, damn what were they thinking?!!!

I just kinda like how much effort Sony made into making this system as quiet and cooled as possible even if that means having a hilariously large heatsink.
dude did you ever see a pc? cause that heatsink in not that big that's just a gpu heat sink size for all of the system if you ever saw an 360 AIO plus a rtx 3090 then you know that heatsink is normal

After watching this, I'm definitely going to wait until they do a slimmer revision. It's just so damn big.
how can Sony make a slim version of this system if originally the ps5 was going to be bigger?
@@Malandrin Bullshit, the original version probably wasn't overclock but this monster is.
In regards of the refresh version... REDUCING NANOMETERS SON!, Simple really, it happens every generation.
I'll do too, the slim version would probably it gonna have a better design.
Got a feeling this is going to have a high failure rate. : my ps3 and PS4 both bought on launch day broke within a few years and I ended up with a slim
@Charles Szasz It's not the only reason. Typically the later revisions have less rates of failure as well and they're usually cheaper. I honestly don't have a spot for it right now, it wouldn't fit in my current setup.
I completely agree about Astro! Super cool mascot and a neat little game to show off the new Dualsense controller.
Man that console is the size of your torso, holy smoke 👀👀👀👀👀.

@@BryBry2ply No the PS5 is just massive

There both zen 2 socs
Die shot?

@@austinfondren2590 the actual silicon chip itself is called a die. With the right equipment and skill it's possible to get an image of the actual integrated circuit etched into the die, showing structures like CPU and GPU cores, caches and the like. That's typically referred to as a "die shot".
@Apple it does a few small background tasks and has its own 256MB of DDR3 RAM. It was supposed to handle downloads while the console was in rest mode so the main APU could power down. It turned out not to be powerful enough though, so the main APU still remains powered.

2 different companies. 2 different solutions to the same issues. It seems Microsoft had the better team in place to create a console.
@@Noah-Lach oh for sure, plus its box shaped.

As a series X owner I'll have to admit the PS5 simply looks much better as a pure gaming console
@@goldensun3551 I agree but that's because I thing the PS5 has less multimedia capabilities overall. They're both great systems and each have pros and cons. For me personally, more of my friends play on Xbox so I use my Xbox more, but both are great.
I respect the heck out of this design its so fucking clean I cannot believe it the wire management is perfect just all easy and interchangeable
Nothing. Since that is the liquid metal sony put in there. He just replaced it to try it
Jakub Krych well you do need to replace it eventually because it will eventually absorb the copper but it takes a really long time for that
@@jkrhu Thank you! When he said the power supply would be hard to replace. I just kept wondering why not just take out the entire cage board and all without disassembling it. I just didn't know what screws anchored it down to the shell and what screws kept the cage halves together.
Can we all just stop and give this video a like real quick and appreciate all this man has shown us over the years.
The PS5 heatsink is bigger than the Series S, lol.

Some Cheap Asian console what do you expect
All of the quality plastics went into the DualSense controller. It seems they had no choice but to make the console itself out of recycled sandwich bags from the Sony cafeteria.
They should have also made the controller have adaptive thumbsticks so when you pull on something or walk against something, like in wind or water, it provides resistance to make it seem like the character is working harder to walk.
The heat sink looks like the “P” in the PS logo
re: Warranty Stickers.
Viewed many p4 pro guides ive found is very easy to take apart & replace parts the soldering part could not afford the equipment removeing puting back together is like takeing apart a kit
Seems like based on your initial reactions the Xbox series x was more impressive
It really is. By keeping the system in a box form, stronger hardware to avoid over heating plus the way the air is pulled out. I believe the longevity of the xbox will out class the ps5 by a long shot. That's probably why they are running the same as the ps4 with more capabilities but are limiting it to avoid over clocking and straining the system.
