The Climber Lite by Victorinox... plus a bonus saw! (The Huntsman Lite)

  • Victorinox did make a Climber Lite once... and I think they should do it again! in face, they ARE making the Climber Lite now, but they've been adding a saw to it and calling it the Huntsman Lite. The Huntsman Lite gets mixed reviews. I wonder if that's because of the confusing mix of a saw and the flashlight, which seems more intended for indoor use. Whatever, I say this toolset is awesome, and let's just ignore the saw because this awesome item is worth it!
check out this review, which is nicely done! • The Victorinox Huntsma...

I’ve got the Cybertool Lite. The light lines up with the bit driver so it illuminates what your working on whether you’re working under a desk or inside a computer case or wherever. I think the lite is a great tool on a SAK.

Ok, I’ve watched this vid a couple times now and I gotta say I think the saw is a good addition for a lot of people - I’m sure you know that already and isn’t the point of the video. But, for me, every time I add a victorinox tool to my edc I end up finding something to do with it. It amazes how useful some tools can be even if we don’t think we will use them before purchasing. This is just to say “if the saw is the reason you’re not buying this, maybe try it anyway; you’ll probably end up liking it.” 💜 awesome vid

Yeah, this got confusing for me, too. My hope was to make a more informal video, but I forgot too many things. I'm kind of experimenting to see what sticks, and this style does not!
Anyhow, it is a fantastic light for indoors. Way better than I thought. The kinfe feels good in th hand as well; I honestly would say it feels one layer too thick but I think that is my brain wishing it didn't have the saw!

Because I watched your other video - it’s your fault that I bought…. (in addition to my other 22 Swiss Army knives…) the hide and drink belt sheath as well as the SwissChamp. I’ve always dangled my SAK knives via small clip- down in my front pocket, from a belt loop so they are out of the way, but your solution is so much better- on the belt horizontally and a much more robust tool. I added a very small micro paracord lanyard to access it easily with a finger or thumb and it’s been working great. I appreciate your videos and your enthusiasm! Cheers!

Great review. Glad you showed people a beam shot of the lite module. It’s really brighter then people think. The Hunter lite is my favorite ECD knife/multi tool. My wife took one look at it and I ended up having to buy another one if you know what I mean. I guess she likes gadgets and gimmick also. The built in flashlight is a very useful addition. As you mentioned it’s bright enough to use for close up lighting in a dark room although I’ve used it walking down a pitch black trail at night and it worked well enough for that. I keep my main EDC light a 700 lumen Rovyvon E7 in a pocket organizer but for a situation where I need quick instant light on some task that doesn’t need more then a few lumens, having it right there on my knife is very convenient. Before I bought our Hunter lites I saw on a YT review video that the light module had been upgraded twice since the initial module was introduced. The previous versions where a light grey solid color and the latest module is a clear plastic that has a much brighter output. I have the latest clear lite module in both the Huntsman and a Cybertool. They are both pretty bright, much brighter then low setting on my Rovyvon E7 and a bit brighter then a Photon Microlight 2. I remember a RUclipsr did a light meter test of the Victorinox lite module and it was about 4lumens. There are seven 91mm Victorinox lite models that I have seen. A Voyager Lite, A traveler lite, a Expedition lite, a Spartan lite, the 2021 Climber lite winter edition, the Huntsman lite and the Cybertool 34 lite. If I’m not mistaken I think the Traveler lite is a Climber based light much like the Winter edition? BTW also checkout the recently discontinued Cybertool 34 lite if you get a chance. It could just become your favorite in home work desk Knife/Light all in one.

I have the Climber Lite (Winter Magic). At the moment it is my most used knife because of the light. It is great at home for looking into dark cabinets and corners etc. Use the light at least 3-4 times a day. Snapped up the Winter Magic Climber Lite soon as it came out because it added 2 really useful tools to the Climber, which was my favourite EDC around town or in the office. Plus I love the festive look of those Winter Magic scales :-) The Huntsman Lite looks great too but for sawing and outdoor use I prefer the larger SAK-s like the Outrider. For urban use, I think a Mountaineer Lite would be a good option if it existed, the file (as opposed to a saw) being useful for many mundane things around the home or office up to and including using it as a nail file.

Oh that's very interesting! The light on them is surprisingly strong! I would really miss the plus scales, though, and I would not really want to take off the fancy scales to get plus scales. The Climber Lite is basically amazing. The Traveller Lite is a Climber Lite with clock etc scales - that's amazing, but they had the old style light, which is not as bright.
I'd also like to see more Lite models released.

A great knife, no question! I always find it fascinating that there are almost as many preferences as there are SAK fans. I absolutely understand this "just one thing minimalism" but for me personally it wouldn't be anything. I use my knife quite often and it gets wet, dirty salty. That's why electronic parts in a knife are a no-go for me. My solution is a separate blade that I use very often and can be easily cleaned. Plus my Manager at the keys. Pen, scissors, etc. stay clean here and I don't have to clean them all the time. Plus a Rovyvon Aurora A8. The Manager would still exist with light, also a awesome little thing.

I literally can't pass a loose doorknob or a loose screw without needing to tighten it. (It's a problem I have.) I think the reason, that Victorinox did Not put out that many models with a lite function is that many models with electric/ electronic function did not sell that well in history and that the EDC community likes Independence, which includes Independence from a power source.

  • @richardneff
    @richardneff Год назад +1

Another great video, even with the Inception-style jumps! I think it would be a good idea to offer a Climber Lite, although ironically, I probably wouldn't buy one. (And I have a few Climbers because I do love the toolset.) The reason is that I carry the 58mm SAKs with the light. Yes, I know it's a weaker light, but the small tweezers and toothpick aren't my favorites, so I tend to prefer the small pen and the light as my scale tools on the 58mm. I just think the light on the 91mm makes things too thick (although, the inline Philips is nice on the opposite end of the layer.) So, my 91mm SAKs that I carry with the 58mm on my keys tend to be 2-layer (Compact) or 3-layer (Climber with installed Plus scales.)
Where I think the Huntsman Lite is the most useful would be for hiking and/or camping. The small light would be great in a tent (and it's likely you'd have a more powerful flashlight anyway for outside of the tent.) Of course, the saw works well in that scenario. Even the other tools would have a place as the scissors easily cut paracord and there are Philips head screws on many pieces of gear.

Yes; this would be good for any type of camping. I just don't know how water-resistant it is.
Ooh, I like that - 58mm midnight manager for the basics, plus 91 mm whatever else you need - no duplicated scales tools then! Very cool. :)

You’re right, it’s a great one-and-done tool, but the pen and light (which I use a lot) just aren’t great. But the pen on 58 mm models is actually quite nice (at least in my hands) and has proven to be way more durable than a Space Pen. If you want a basic SAK-like flashlight, check out the Nitecore Tube… better button, usb charging, lots of colors and only $12. On a keychain it’s roughly the same size and weight as a key.

Climber was one of my first SAKs that I carried for many years before discovering all the other models. Back then I only knew about the Classic, Spartan, Climber or Camper, basically what most outdoor shops would stock and in an office environment, opening items with a scissors was less savage than using your teeth. Then came the internet, but then IMO the 91 and 84mm lines were not adequately differentiated from each other. I remember looking at an Ambassador and thinking that it was the same as a classic. Size differences don't come across as clearly on the Internet. That felt like a decline to me, but I think that this tool is going to spark renewed interest.

@@thevineclimber I think I only came across the SwissChamp that a friend's dad had about 3 years later. The only SAK I owned was a Wenger Commander. Their 2 layer with Sportsman tools. Later I bought a Camper and then it got lost so I opted for the Climber wishing that they had a Huntsman with the best of both. I probably missed the Huntsman on the shelf at the shop, but ended up with the Climber for many years before discovering the multitude of models on the internet. Some models were never popular here. Happy Saturday Anne, thanks for the new & very whimsical video! I own 2 Winter Magic 91mm Climber Lites, one I keep unused in its box as part of my special & limited edition collection & the other bought at a discount I have in my EDC rotation. It would be nice if Victorinox would add the climber lite to its regular line up, with or without Plus scales, but it seems unlikely now that they are dropping so many models. I do not think it is fair to compare the Climber & the Huntsman, the Climber is strictly an Urban EDC SAK & the Huntsman (the Top Selling 91mm model) is an outdoor oriented SAK & IMO the "King of the Forest". Above all else the regular Huntsman is my favorite SAK and I also own 3 Huntsman Lite models, one bought cheaply 2nd hand on eBay in excellent condition had cracked scales which I replaced, it is the older model with the grey plastic battery housing & earlier and less bright White LED and my other 2 are the newer models made post-2019 with the transparent battery housing & the new & much brighter White LED (the same model as on the 2021 Winter Magic Climber Lite). I bought both at different times when they were on sale as the model is expensive, normally almost double the price of the standard Huntsman. I have left one with Rubi red Plus scales & put Sapphire blue Plus scales on the other one. One other point you over looked is that in addition to the White LED & in-line Philips, the Huntsman Lite has an an additional back layer tool - the 6mm fine screwdriver (the same one as on the Ranger & Handyman models). ATB Steve in Tel Aviv.

Thanks, Steve! LOL Of course you have two Climber Lite 2021 Winter Magic SAKs. Really, you should like make a Victorinox museum or something. If I had one, I would want to carry it on indoor-only days, I think!
Yes, I thought the video was confusing enough, so I left off the fine screwdriver on the back I am kind of mad at that tool because it has not served me well. I know it's probably me, but I find the T handle it ends up having too clumsy to use with such a fine point. I scraped up the toy I was trying to open the battery compartment on, which is probably OK because once I did get it open it turned out that the batteries hadn't been changed in a REALLY long time and the batteries were leaking. :( Anyhow, I blame the screwdriver for that, too! J/k.
So, you are the perfect person to ask. Do you use the Huntsman Lite outdoors? How water-resistant do you think it is? It lterally has every tool I use regularly except for the nail file and the ruler/poking stick that other people call the hook disgorger/fish scaler.
So, you actually HAVE a climber lite, but you wouldn't be willing to overlook the presence of the saw and call this an indoor knife? I actually use my saw indoors occasionally when starting fires, but I realize I am the exception on that one.

    • @stevesinclair4159
      @stevesinclair4159 Год назад +1

@@thevineclimber Anne I use the Huntsman Lite outdoors only, at home I have my tool box of various large Victorinox & Wenger multi-layer SAK's.& if I pocket carry a knife at home it will be a 91mm Compact or smaller one like an 84mm Sportsman, an 85mm Wenger such as a Viking or a Commander or Swiss Buck Odyssey ,an 74mm Executive or a small Rough Ryder knife of some sort. I have not used the HL outdoors in the rain but I would guess the main concern would be the light shorting out. In general SAK's are pretty waterproof & can be soaked in warm soapy water to clean them (I use an old toothbrush & earbuds to clean dirt & grit out) but must be dried with a paper towel & left on paper on a warm but not boiling hot surface to dry for 10-15 minutes and then oiled. I don't own any wooden handled SAK's & I would not recommend soaking them in water & instead using a wet wipe / anti-bacterial wipe to clean them off with. For sawing inside I use the saw on one of my tool box SAK's such as the Handyman or more likely the larger wood saw on the 111mm Forester, for a small metal sawing job I might use the metal saw on the Mountaineer, Ranger or Handyman. Most back layer tools are limited in how they can be used including the fine screwdriver & so I use the Cybertool M & the 58mm Rogue for its in-line fine screwdriver. ATB Steve

Now you've got me thinking about the Cybertool Lite. I have a Cybertool M. It has become one of my favorites and It's the same thickness as a Champion Plus. I wonder if the Cybertool Lite is the same thickness as a Swiss Champ? That would be doable. I've never handled a SAK with a lite. Does the lite appear to be durable, or is it something that will quickly fail or break?

The Ranger and Compact are my jams for that reason. I'm naively hoping that as long as Vic is making parts for the Cadet and remaining 84mm models, they'll rethink the capabilities and potential appeal of the smaller frame. More diverse toolsets and aesthetics (and better marketing) could fill a gap between the 58 and 91mm models, especially since 65/74mm look to truly have their days numbered. But maybe it's all just the push I need to get into modding. Working with scales and accessories thus far has been a lot of fun!

So Ann(e) I have a Climber which is one of my 1st SAK that now has been designated as an outdoor SAK with Fire Fly Helix tender and Ferro Rod in the toothpick slot.
I have a Deluxe Tinker as and Urban carry because of the 3D Phillips with a Useful Leather Co slip. With the slips longish lanyard tucked under or around the beIt, rides vertically in the pocket.
I have plus scales for both with pens and etc yet to be installed.
Now here come along the Huntsman Lite which seems to be the best of both and has Plus scales onboard already … with and extra limb … traded limb for the pliers on the Deluxe. I am quite torn as to if I need this and if I do what to do with the other two? I like things to be useful and fit in a systems not sit around collecting dust though I am a bit sentimental as well.
Did I mention I have a Pioneer X as well and been leaning towards getting a Swiss Champ? Confusionaled and perplexedified, that is what I am Ann(e). Advice? Stay with what I got and get a Swiss Champ one day or consolidate and liquidate and have One SAK to rule them all??
Thanks for sharing and putting up with me wee bit of fun and verboseness.

    Nice review Anne,
I got my Victorinox Huntsman brand new for FREE. Want to know how I did that? Easy, I have a Cabela's Master Card, and every time I use it, I get points for it, and I can use those points in the Cabela's store. I bought my Victorinox Huntsman from Cabela's and had enough points saved up to get the Huntsman for free. 😁 (and no, I don't work for Cabela's or Master Card, and I don't know anyone who does).
Instead of using my bank debit card to buy groceries and gas, or to eat out, I use my Cabela's card and then pay it off at the end of the month. That's how I build up points.
Anyway. I enjoyed your review. Keep up the great videos.
