You have NO IDEA what this just did for me. My eyes have been OPENED to your technique and how to do this and I am MOTIVATED to sit down and draw right now. Thank you.
I learn visually and step by step kinda so this is EXACTLY the kind of video I need and I love doing portraits so it’s even more perfect you’re the best!!!
Another thing I love about artist.. Is we all give one another feedback like I don't know one single artist that looks at a beginners art and say it looks like crap or something because well it isn't, but they give them feedback and tips to improve..
it's good, but it is not her. the painting is really nice, but she needs to improve her skills (i.e. forehead, nose and right face half shading, eyes, cheeks, neck). i believe that your foundation is wrong, the sketch you made at the beginning already shows facial mistakes (i.e. eye position compared to the ear, which resulted in a different nose, mouth and cheeks, and a different forehead). maybe you can improve that? because the painting shows anybody, but not that hoyeon jung that is a korean model. in fact, the painting looks almost western, but the reference photo does not @Chris Hong Art
Hey Grips Why’d you make this as a reply to someone instead of as an actual comment? And also, this is a study to help her ease into painting with watercolors. She wasn’t trying to make it absolutely perfect, or else she would’ve spent more time. She also mentioned she was going on a trip so maybe she was rushing a bit. Can you please not be so harsh? And what do you mean the painting looks western but the photo does not?
@@Soopknits the face has westernized features for instance the eyes are rounder and wider spaced than the model's. Although I find the painting beautiful, it's of a younger girl, maybe the model's little sister.
I'm a watercolour beginner In the beginning, I'm like "hmm? purple on the face?" In the end, "okay!! I am going to start painting portrait too!" Thank you, you inspires me
I just want to say that this is probably THE most helpful watercolor portrait video on youtube - at least that I have been able to dig up. THANK YOU! it’s not a speed painting and your talking us through your process here is extremely helpful to me as a newbie to color and especially watercolors. again, many many thanks!
If I want to dull an area to draw the eye towards somewhere else (e.g. the neck) I find using a thin base layer of dirty water (painting water, not whatever you may find in a puddle or in the kitchen sink) and then either drop your colors or letting the layer dry and glaze over it. Zbukivic does something similar with his landscapes where he starts his painting with a wet wash of grayed painting water.
she is simply perfection... I could not turn off the video... it was a joy to watch you bring her to life on paper. I am inspired. Loved the talk about the warms and cools and shadows... Thank you so much.
This is awesome and extremely informative and helpful, especially to those that have a better/easier time learning it visually! I‘ve been having trouble doing portraits, especially when it comes to edges and transitioning colors (like letting the colors bleed together), and watching the way you do and explain it makes it so much clearer. Aside from that, it‘s super relaxing to watch. Definitely needed to watch it after coming home from a long day. So.. Thank you!!!
Hi, thank you so much for this tutorial, I am learning so much with the water colours, with you, the way you start and finish is amazing to see the transformation, l8ve the way you talk while painting and is so relaxing to hear all about your process
this is literally the only video on watercolor portraits on RUclips that i find actually helpful, I've watched it so many times and it's always so good
I like your eye for color and shape. You added details I didn't see at first. I haven't worked with watercolor in a long time too but your video gave me a little boost of confidence to do it. Thanks.
almost all of the youtubers never show thier entire process for free, every stroke that they paint, real time. They always ask for patreon money or to buy some sort of course etc but YOU ARE A GEM in this greedy world........ THANK YOU SOOOOOOOOOO MUCH .................. If I ever make money from my art, I will remeber to donate some part to you.
This is the beauty of ‘studies’....”Everything is a study until it starts to look good”...then we know what happens..we keep going. I am sometimes more pleased with these little ‘ditties’ than a finished exhibit piece. “Get in, get out!”....which we know is hard to do. Anyway, I really like the freshness...
I have only stepped into watercolor within the last week. Complete newbie here. I started in graphite a couple years ago and I love playing with shades to get the look I want. I just purchased about a dozen watercolors two weeks ago and dream of moving into color. The way you explain how and why you do the things you have done in this video is so helpful. Thank you for this!!!! Your girl is absolutely beautiful.
You can make shadows in a cool tone or in a warm tone. If you look closely on her forehead (the shadow part in the center) or her cheeks, you can see that the shadows are blueish/ purplish. It is is nice contrast to the warm sun and hair.
Hello, I loved watching you paint and talk. i felt every brush stroke. It is not an easy task to paint a portrait, and expecting it to come out with a recognizable face. You did it from the beginning. I actually enjoyed your hesitations because, I've been there, so thanks for your watercolor painting. I think that it's like riding a bike, once you become an expert, the skill will not leave you, even through a passage of time. You just proved it. Enjoy your trip.
Thank you for such a great demo. You showed the reference photo the whole time and explained what you were doing continuously. That really helps. Great painting and great video skills too.
Knowing when to walk away... I’ll leave a portrait out and walk by it and stop and dab here and there but need to have the confidence to say, “there, done”. I loved this video!
MISS, THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! I’ve been searching for great portrait drawing videos and I did watch some but yours are exactly what I NEED. Like I literally watched all the steps carefully. I studied everything, the technique, etc. AND TO SAY THAT THIS REALLY HELPED ME IS AN UNDERSTATEMENT. Thank you! This kinda opened my eyes, and telling me once again that I shouldn’t be afraid of playing with colors. I’m always afraid of messing it up (glad to know we’re in this together - honestly every artists are), but i decided to start being brave again
Does your painting even have an ugly phase? It literally looks good as soon as you put the first brushstroke, that's amazing! Such a beautiful study. As about letting go a bit of the control when it comes to using watercolours, I totally get it, I started letting go a bit recently and I saw a huge difference. It looks more creative when you do, and you can show details by doing less, it is just a bit hard to no overdo it and ruin it in the end haha. :) Have a nice day!

I love how you keep it simple with rather sharp geometric shapes and colors. I feel like this simplicity really keeps the essence of the reference picture. Love your style so much!
Goodness, I really love the way you simplify! I personally love when the graphite shows through, but that might just be because I need those guides to see where I’m painting 😅 I’m always in awe of people who paint with faint or no lines! And the dropping of colors into a wash is one of my favorite parts of painting with watercolors. Another great vid, Chris 💕
you have no idea of how much I learned just by watching this video. thank you so much for describing what you are doing and what you're thinking, this way we can learn with what you know.
I can say I learned more with this video (your technique, hearing your thoughts during the process...) that most of the videos I've seen from other artist I follow
I love that you explain all the decisions you make, from color, value, to even composition and focal point. Love getting that peek into your mind and learning from it

So I just want to say that your style is recognizable and memorable. Thanks for the great video, now I am subscribed!
She's so beautiful! I cannot say this enough but I really hope you'll do a Sketchbook soon and that she's going to be one of the chosen ones ^^ It is always so satisfying to watch you paint and to see how your characters come to life! Also, I love how you chose these portrait studies with different lighting and I love it when the light seems 'strong' on the edge of the face or shape. I don't see this so much from other artists to be honest.
It turned out really well, actually it all started well ..and ended well. I initially thought for water colors the paint area was less but its amazing how many layers of details you put into it. Thanks for sharing.

I find your way of painting and making faces really good, i always have the hurry to stop what i'm doing and start drawing every time you post, so thank you for that ✨💛 Hope you have a great day 🌻
Very well done. A very nice rendition from the photo. I find your narration well done also - descriptive without being heavy. Your voice is relaxing too.
At first I thought it looked quite just like a simplified usage of watercolors with the thumbnail but listening to you I realize there's a lot more knowledge behind the decisions you've made. Or perhaps I'm over analysing and just reaffirming myself jk lol. Great video and concise explanations I really enjoyed all of it.
Totally enjoyed watching this video, it felt as if we were experiencing your creative flow as you narrated along. (thanx for taking us on your journey) What an awesome lesson and destination. God Bless you.
I really love your videos! It’s so informative and I always learn something new, especially on this one, coz watercolor is also my medium and I’ve been struggling from it lately. Thank u for this! I’ll gonna apply all the things that I learned from this study! Thank you Cris Hong! You’re such an inspiration and truly amazing artist! Love u ❤️❤️ a lot ☺️☺️
Beautiful, I struggle to get back into things when I stop using a certain medium for a long time, but you made it look effortless - like you do this every day! I loved how you approached the shadows and highlights in this portrait :)
This was a great video to watch. I absolutely love this portrait. That was a great tip about eyes from John Singer Sargent, one of my favorite painters.
I'm sure you're the only one that's every really described how to do this. So many just do it and talk about everything else other than what they're doing. Love your art and hope you have an amazing trip xxx
WOW! again...I agree with the lady who said that you opened her eyes....I am so glad that you talked about the eyes. I have trouble with eyes and you have opened my eyes too LOL. Thanks so much again.

I’ll gonna apply all the things that I learned from this study! Thank you Cris Hong! You’re such an inspiration and truly amazing artist! Love u ❤️❤️ a lot ☺️☺️
thank you for your incredibly supportive comment, it means a lot to me! 😭❤️
Beautiful, I struggle to get back into things when I stop using a certain medium for a long time, but you made it look effortless - like you do this every day! I loved how you approached the shadows and highlights in this portrait :)
Your pencil holding way is unique..i like it so much.
This was a great video to watch. I absolutely love this portrait. That was a great tip about eyes from John Singer Sargent, one of my favorite painters.
i really like how u think out loud while drawing
i took so many notes while watching + i'm so excited to do an art study rn
Some art vids are boring i skip most of it but this one so fun towatch💞💞💞💞💞and also i looovvvee water colors

Yep: Wow!
I love how it goes from "nothing" to a "mess" and from there to a "Wow!"
Many many thanks. We are really very lucky to have you as a company.
You helped me discover a major element of my art. Thank you for that!!!
