My limited color palette consists of Quinacridone Gold (yellow), Permanent Alizarin Crimson (red) and Payne's Gray. For the background later on (stylization) I also used Shadow Violet by Daniel Smith, this color strongly granulates and helped me with some texture and effect. Hope you enjoy the tutorial!
This is just what I need! I look for videos to give me tips in portrait painting. I am a visual person and you have done a very good job of showing what you’re doing and why. Thank you so much. I look forward to your videos!
Incredible tutorial, this is like an entire skillshare class for free! I especially like how you broke down each layer into those steps at the beginning, thinking of it like that might help me not overwork layers so much. You're such a well spoken and encouraging teacher! 🥰
This was a fantastic lesson, particularly the part where you showed how you create swatches for the various layers. That solved many mysteries for me regarding watercolor portraits. Thank you!
I saw your art on my thread and was instantly drawn to your style and technique. I read your bio and I have to say that I followed a similar path. I studied Pharmacy due to family expectations but deep inside I knew I was always an artist. Unlike you though, I never had the courage to follow my heart until recently. So here I am immersing myself in learning from everyone whose work inspires me, absorbing everything like a sponge! ❤
Thank you for showing us your method as you went along with the characteristics of the medium. This was a very realistic tutorial and the final result was stunning!
You just blew my mind. I struggle so much with watercolor. I dove in with no real knowledge and have to unlearn a lot. This helped me immensely. Thank you.
One of my favorites so far. I really like how you broke layers into cards while glazing. I usually just wing it or go with the flow imitating what I see knowing I have to put in my lights, midtones and darks. This kind of broke it down mechanically for me and made me think in a different way. I usually have a cow too when I put in the shadows. Im always thinking relax Jessica, you're not done and haven't put in the dark darks yet. It will fade. But I find those in between moments anxiety filled. When I'm done, I'm like I knew it would fade, why was I so worried. I need to try the gold leaf someday. Such a cool effect. I really enjoyed how organized this process (tutorial) was even tho you come off as a free spirit expressive most of the time. It's always helpful to see how other artists break things down and process things and how one can learn from different techniques or those that are different from our own. - Jessica
Hello Jessica, loved your comment! I guess my free spirit got only released for the stylization :D That was fun enough for me, as well as the gold leaf. You're so right about the stress when laying down the shading wash, I am nervous every time, even though many times I painted like that and it always, ALWAYS look so pale when you add hair & background. It's a psychological moment and I guess we have to use tricks for our mind there, to keep going :)
Wow. This is so informative and easy to understand! I haven't paint watercolor for a while but this gives me inspiration to paint again! Thank you for making this wonderful painting process!
Gorgeous portrait Jane. I enjoyed watching you painting. I do not often paint this way. It is just too stressful and time consuming. You should add more gold leaf like you did on a preview.
Thank you for watching, I know what you mean about layering technique being too time-consuming, because it is. But when going for this kind of detail, I find it the only way. However I'll try more expressive 1-2 layer approach next time and we'll see :)
@@JaneBeata This is the reason I like colored pencils you can stop and continue any time. With watercolor you just have to paint for hour/s at a time which is really hard when you have house and kids and homeschool to deal with. I am not complaining just do the best I can. 😉
Wow that looks incredible 😍 I LOVE alizarin crimson, it’s my favourite shade! I tend to use a bright blue for shadows but you’ve made me wanna try out payne’s grey now
You are not wrong to use blue, I just thought for this portrait with the near black hair and all this will be less work than mixing black constantly :)
Thanks for the video, I never really plan the colors beforehand, but probably I should. Will give it a try at doing like you showed. BTW, your dryer, is that an ordinary hair dryer? Asking because it reminded me of a tool used for electronics/crafting, but I wasn't sure. Thanks!
I’m in awe at how beautiful this turned out! I’m not into portraits but your process and now this video urges me to try following a real time tutorial of yours for a practice.
Wow thank u so much...the information was very helpful not a lot of artist share such in depth details for free...i am very grateful 🙏🏼 and i love ur are a lot. I am scared of watercoloring but i am going to try it with these techniques.❤️
Just found your work and I’m on a binge of your videos. So helpful and relaxing to watch. I’ve only recently started watercolour and your videos have inspired me to both take bigger risks in trying more ambitious paintings and to plan a little more carefully to improve chances of things working out like swatching.
great video although I have one question, even in the final result i can see the sketch lines on the lips for example, and im assuming going over that with an eraser would not be the best idea? so how to deal with that
Hi, usually when applying paint as dark as this painting has, you cannot see sketchmarks. I'd be more causcious when working on very light and transparent watercolor paintings, in this case using kneadable eraser before painting could help, it leaves marks on your paper still but just enough so you can see them and use them to navigate your paintbrush. I hope this helps. BTW, sketch showing through painting isn't generally my concern at all, but its personal preference. I quite like it if sketch is admitted, it shows process and "handmade" nature of your painting. Its actually something I prefer.
Oh by the way can you do a video on the colors you prefer in your palette? I have seen your hauls and videos and you have spoke about which ones you prefer and why but it’ll be a helpful guide for someone like me who struggles to pick colors. I do get inspired by my favorite artists but unfortunately I cannot buy every single color so maybe you can help me and a lot of people like me
I purchased some of that gold leaf but don’t know how to use it. I’m s there a special adhesive that I need to purchase? Thank you for another great video. So informative 🤗💕
Yes, it should be available along with gold leaf in art supply store, ask them for assistance in chosing the right one. Its not hard to use but its like glue and ruins brushes.
I cannot do that if the reference imagine isn't mine / taken by me. You can find the reference on my Pinterest board thought, and that one is linked in the description.
the point is with 100% cotton the dried version is way more lighter than 25% cotton. i switched between the two and often find 25% better than 100% for portraits. the darker values are more accentuated.
Which brand is the PAYNES GREY? Also can you give a list of the exact paintbrushes you used for this tutorial? I want to gather all my materials before I join Patreon, thanks
13:20- 23 you can see a change in filter so then which one is the real version? It seems filtered to look better than it is in real life- cameras are naturally good at that so it can be so misleading
What filter?? Its two cameras, Nikon and Canon, each have a different color profile. I do live workshops and demos all the time, do not need to filter anything. This artwork hangs in my studio, visitors view it every weekend. Do you know that every device has its own color profile and shows internet photos and videos differently? There is no way to show artwork in a video in the same way you’d view it in real life. I assume every internet user knows that there is always some shift. This, however, doesn’t prevent one to carefuly explain the process, as I tried.

I’m probably late, but adding white can give a milky effect. Use too much and it becomes muddy. I use this with skintones but don’t over do it
Why do you splash out the piment? I believe you don't need it.
