I hope you guys like it, thankyou as always for all the love.

A bad artist blames his tools. A poor artist blames Adobe for switching to a subscription model. 😂

Brother… i have practically zero experience with painting/ digital art. I am a leatherworker - and only recently picked up procreate for designing logos and stuff for the website. I figured id poke around RUclips and see if i could star learning to paint.. and now here i am crying… Your creative process and story telling in this video was so unbelievably inspiring. The authenticity that comes through in your art and your voice is something that the world sorely needs. Thank you.

Your childhood story with your father hits me hard, man. Once I decided to pursue my career as a concept artist, I was creating art just for the sake of getting a job and getting better. Drawing, painting, and learning subject matter that I hated with the thought of being good at everything, which is a waste of time because it will take my entire life. I almost forgot why I draw in the first place, which is that it gives me joy. thank you so much for the video!

Thanks for sharing this. I wish more people would talk about this side of being a professional artist. It is great to have a job drawing and painting to create games, but in my opinion it is also incredibly important(to me at least) to maintain my identity as an artist. If you focus on the latter, the studios which truly value your artistic identity will hire for that specifically. Then you are in the "dream job" scenario :D

Those last months, I've watched a bunch of videos on I.A tools. At the end, il was just depressing. I myself struggle for years to gain some abilities in digital art (having not even 1% of yours). Watching this video was a pure joy. There's nothing like a real crafter. And paradoxically, people like you are more precious than ever.

    • @gradyfrederickart
      @gradyfrederickart  7 месяцев назад +6

Thanks for your very kind words :) You are not alone in feeling that way. I am confident that AI will never replace the need for real human artists. Among other things, AI image makers simply do not possess the passion, interest and dedication of artists. I do not know all the nuances surrounding the subject, so I am hesitant to make statements without having a more full understanding, but maybe I will share my broad thoughts in a video sometime. All I know for sure is no matter how far it advances, it can never take away your own passion and ideas and personal expression. It can only try to replicate a cold imitation of what humans have already created.

Hey Grady - thank you so much for the vid. I loved seeing the evolution of your doodling, turned sketch, turned painting, and I particularly liked the personality and insight that you were able to provide with your narration - it was great. It's inspiring to see how your thought-process evolves as you do this piece, and the vastly different look / feel that you were able to achieve as you experimented with Procreate. Very cool to see you try something, evaluate it, scrap it or keep it, and then move onto some other aspect of the work. Just slowing it down and watching the sketch evolve was awesome. Please continue to post - I'm subscribed and looking forward to seeing more of your work. Wishing you all the best, Man!

Yo Grady, I appreciate you making such in depth process videos. Its been tricky discovering this sort of this for me. Extremely inspiring stuff. I'm very interested in learning techniques with procreate especially in order to improve the speed of the process but dont want to rush, its all a balance but yeah please continue to do these well done videos man! That part about watching your dad draw reminded me of watching my grandpa draw a pond with a small boat and dock scene when i was like 5 years old before he passed, changed my life for sure.
Hope to see more procreate processes and learn how you personally might use layers and work on shading/ light sources. Also how you choose where to place light sources.
Thank you again for the legendary vids!

I only recently started actually drawing what I feel like drawing again and it really has brought the joy back into my work. I actually started enjoying the painting process more, and got better at picking colours- my lines and sketches make me happier and I think about them a lot when not even working on them- like I actually care and love my work again, it's not just about money or doing something "cool" anymore.
The Elden Ring thing, I was thinking about Elden Ring during the times where you focused on the towers! You really nailed the "grandiose pillar in the distance" feeling.

The comment you made about your dad and watching him draw really struck a cord. I have a four year old son and he loves to draw but I think he likes watching me do it even moreso. I started to use Procreate at the end of 2021, after a whole life without drawing anything at all. I feel in love with the process and want to become better. (But I do it as an amateur, no ambition: I don't have so much time.)
I loved how you painted the sketch, adding volumes and shades right away, filling in the sketch, making it more real before all the lines were there.
That makes me think I need to start sketching more and more: you inspired me. Somehow I feel bored with "only lines" (silly rookie thought, sorry) and your way makes me think I can finally start sketching as I should.
    Subscribed instantly! Thanks.

Thanks! I am glad you feel some motivation to continue :D Keep in mind that drawing fundamentals are necessary to take this approach. It can be tempting to advance to form rendering and values to get past the "ugly" stage but for that to work the drawing must already have a solid foundation. Otherwise you may end up just polishing a... well you know :)

Wonderful work and including scenery from the Isle of Skye was fabulous, I have been there.
I have procreate and am struggling with it as I am not a trained artist, just an old hobbyist.
Your dad sounds like a great guy.
    Hopefully this will inspire me.
    Cheers
    Charlie

Many thanks, Charlie! I have just gotten back from Scotland myself, and seeing Skye before my eyes was quite an overwhelming experience. I encourage you to keep practicing! It is a wonderful hobby to have, no matter what tools you choose.

The first time we went up to Skye I thought, this is probably what the moon is like. On our way back down towards Oban we stopped by a Loch with a spectacular view.
I was compelled to take a photo and when we returned to Toronto, I tried my hand at doing an oil painting. I surprised myself👍

Great video Grady, I love to see your painting process and your thought process. As an artist that is used to work on a desktop I'd love to see videos of you sharing your expirience drawing on the Ipad and using its apps 🍻🔥

please create more artworks with procreate as sole driver, this can really help to us starting artists with limited tools. Thank you sir!

Funny to think that in todays day and age “limited tools” is an iPad with procreate. A super powerful set of tools.

as someone who started with procreate because I felt art supplies were too overwhelming or too expensive to get into,
seriously try it out. once a month, buy a different pen, or different paint, different paper, just different tools. start small and try it out.
also I always felt lack of confident with my drawings but practicing with simple ball pen and paper for a month really changed that.
procreate is an amazing tool that can elevate your artwork but now i agree with a lot of artists. it shouldn't be your main/sole tool for art.
once you have more experience with the real tools, then you can really understand the different tools in procreate.

Great work on shapes and colors. Your style is very elegant. I really love the mood you place in it. From a story telling perspective, I did not really get what that medieval house was doing alone with the towers and walls in the background, but it doesn't matter. I agree: paint what you love and it will show. Here, it shows. Surely you got my sub.

Thankyou! Maybe they are farms providing food for the oppressive kings in the towers? :P

Your advice during the sketching portion is so VITAL! It is priority to work on what you love first. That way choosing your project and getting better becomes way easier. I made the mistake of trying to perfect EVERY style at the beginning but spent too much time on it. Now the flow is better that i focus on my own style, it also attracts people to your style. Narrowing your target audience, if any. 😁

@@gradyfrederickart Glad to hear it! I use it over four years, but mostly for sketching. For final painting I like PC with better performance and working on Cintiq is more comfy. But the iPad is great for sketching and learning. Keep it up, always loving your works and videos!
