For what it’s worth this is the method I used when starting out landscape paintings myself. I kept at the tree phase for weeks. I still remember staring at the foliage of birches and seeing nothing but noise. Seemed pretty hopeless before it started to get easier. Hang in there :) Even big projects can be broken down into smaller parts.

I usually don’t comment since I am a person who lacks confident but You really inspire me. I have been accepted to a very well known art school in Chicago but I have been doubting myself and my art. There are times where i consider getting a regular degree at a university to take the “safe route” in life. You’d be surprised how many think a brush will do all the painting for them. It’s kinda dismissive to the actual work that goes into a painting and I’d rather talk about other more important things on this channel too.

Thank you, when I first clicked on the video I was hoping for a tutorial, but you made me realize that I just need to go for it, that there was no need to follow a step by step tutorial, because I just need to get comfortable with drawing by myself and not just make a replica of other art. And it's okay to suck at first, because you learn something new everytime you paint.

Recently I started to get anxieties (due to the crazy world-situation) and looked for a way to calm myself and focus on positive thoughts and beauty. This might be a bit controversial but one thing that has helped me a lot after going freelance is this: Try to look at the people you follow on ig in two categories. The ones that inspire you and the ones that only make you feel negative emotions about art in general. Try to be brutally honest with yourself when doing this. That might mean acknowledgment of jealousy, feelings of inferiority or lack of optimism in ever getting to that level. Then the hard part is to just unfollow everyone that doesn’t inspire you in a positive way. Art is not a competition but it can definitely feel like one with the way algorithms pit us against each other in visibility. These days I have about the same amount of artists that I follow but the difference is that they all do something different to what I want to do and they all inspire me to be productive and creative. This process required me to look at the ugly side of all my creative fears and it’s not easy exercising self awareness on those parts. The benefits outweigh the difficulty of this change in the things you see daily and they have had such a positive effect on my relationship with creativity that it’s something I would recommend for anyone that goes through those feelings on a regular basis.

Landscapes aren’t easier, whatever you choose you will find the difficulty in it because you will naturally always be striving to get better at it. The difficulty is there to stay so I don’t recommend using that feeling as a measuring stick for your progress. Look up your own character drawings or landscape pieces from 3 years ago and you’ll see how far you’ve come.

I’m sorry for not being able to answer that as I can’t afford to keep past projects stored on my hard drives. I have 3 ongoing music subscriptions to run this channel and sometimes the long format videos have playlists of 70+ songs. The best guess would be to Shazam the part you’re thinking of. This is how I learned how to paint landscapes and it’s also the way I teach the topic in classes. The purpose of my videos is to help people learn art not to recreate existing artwork. In short I recommend copying the method not the end result. If I focused on the end result I would be limiting your creativity not enabling it.

Hey Mikko, for beginners to painting as a fun hobby would you suggest following tutorials and taking fundamentals, or just start with leaves, then branches, then trees, then more foliage and landscape elements over time and enjoy the process? I'm not sure if I should use reference images to evaluate if I'm on the right track, and just be patient. Thanks!
Here in Finland I’m literally thigh-deep in snow but where you live you might have access to an actual leaf outside. I would 100% recommend bringing one on your table as a reference instead of using a picture online. Regarding the review process. Comparing your results with the photo doesn’t give information on whether or not your results are successful. You’re going to have to also develop a way to review your own work by comparing it to the results when you first started. “Tutorial” I’ve noticed, is an incredibly tricky word when it comes to art. I make a lot of tutorials on this channel on how to use certain tools or possible ways to approach common visual problems. These I don’t make just for fun but because I think that information is useful. My power button trick for example is something that nobody would stumble upon on their own but it helps checking values and thus just makes art in any style faster. However I started using the word “process” for videos like these as I noticed that a number of people assumed that the word tutorial meant repeating the same painting. I want to be very clear that I’m not annoyed or mad that some like to do this. It’s absolutely fine with me. However as an art teacher, I cannot in good conscience recommend that OVER application of said information into you own aesthetic, subject and way of working. Imagination and your own way of painting doesn’t happen overnight and it’s dangerous to think that should be something to go after only after decades of realistic studies. I hope that people understand that I’m saying this to help. If I chose to make tutorials like that it would be so much easier to grow this channel because everyone’s posts would basically be free advertising for my own art and channel. I have chosen to put my money where my mouth is in regards to this and I don’t share such paintings anymore on my instagram stories. I fully support the artists who make art that way but sharing them on my stories would send a message that it’s the way to get free visibility on my feed. That would harm the progress of those artists and would only serve to put me on a gross pedestal. I would feel terrible for allowing that. I can’t explain this reasoning to everyone and I’m sure some feel annoyed by not getting those features on my feed. In these situations I just hope that they will keep painting long enough to someday see that I was trying to help.

This is how my art teachers taught me. We were weeks in front of a bunch of trees behind a shed, just expanding the zoom level slowly.

I have recently gotten back to working on art after a way too long break and it has been a big issue of mine to not know where to start and to focus on the small details but I'm working on it! I’m sorry for not being able to answer that as I can’t afford to keep past projects stored on my hard drives. I have 3 ongoing music subscriptions to run this channel and sometimes the long format videos have playlists of 70+ songs. The best guess would be to Shazam the part you’re thinking of. Again sorry for not being more helpful with this.

Not so much a tutorial, more of a fascinating insight into a very unique approach. Inspirational, but virtually impossible to follow. Great style.
This is how I learned how to paint landscapes and it’s also the way I teach the topic in classes. The purpose of my videos is to help people learn art not to recreate existing artwork. In short I recommend copying the method not the end result. If I focused on the end result I would be limiting your creativity not enabling it.

Why do you flip your drawing upside down sometimes?

Hey Mikko, for beginners to painting as a fun hobby would you suggest following tutorials and taking fundamentals, or just start with leaves, then branches, then trees, then more foliage and landscape elements over time and enjoy the process? I'm not sure if I should use reference images to evaluate if I'm on the right track, and just be patient. Thanks!
Here in Finland I’m literally thigh-deep in snow but where you live you might have access to an actual leaf outside. I would 100% recommend bringing one on your table as a reference instead of using a picture online.
Regarding the review process. Comparing your results with the photo doesn’t give information on whether or not your results are successful. You’re going to have to also develop a way to review your own work by comparing it to the results when you first started.
“Tutorial” I’ve noticed, is an incredibly tricky word when it comes to art. I make a lot of tutorials on this channel on how to use certain tools or possible ways to approach common visual problems. These I don’t make just for fun but because I think that information is useful.
My power button trick for example is something that nobody would stumble upon on their own but it helps checking values and thus just makes art in any style faster.
However I started using the word “process” for videos like these as I noticed that a number of people assumed that the word tutorial meant repeating the same painting.
I want to be very clear that I’m not annoyed or mad that some like to do this. It’s absolutely fine with me. However as an art teacher, I cannot in good conscience recommend that OVER application of said information into you own aesthetic, subject and way of working. Imagination and your own way of painting doesn’t happen overnight and it’s dangerous to think that should be something to go after only after decades of realistic studies.
I hope that people understand that I’m saying this to help. If I chose to make tutorials like that it would be so much easier to grow this channel because everyone’s posts would basically be free advertising for my own art and channel.
I have chosen to put my money where my mouth is in regards to this and I don’t share such paintings anymore on my instagram stories. I fully support the artists who make art that way but sharing them on my stories would send a message that it’s the way to get free visibility on my feed. That would harm the progress of those artists and would only serve to put me on a gross pedestal. I would feel terrible for allowing that.
I can’t explain this reasoning to everyone and I’m sure some feel annoyed by not getting those features on my feed. In these situations I just hope that they will keep painting long enough to someday see that I was trying to help.
