  • Even though they were two companies in the same business, these two power houses of wrestling didn't exactly do things the same way. Today we talk about what made WCW different from the WWF.

    The commentators of each company had a different feel, with WCW's emphasizing the sport aspects (Tenay giving trivia about a wrestler's work in other companies, and commentators explaining why a move was being done or how it hurt a wrestler) while WWE would explain the story of a match more.

      Yep when Vampiro debuted you got his whole background in Mexico so you got a clue as to what he was capable of, that he was Canadian and who he'd worked with in the past. Had he gone to WWF you'd have Paul Bearer and Kane digging him up or something and it would have all been about the mystic voodoo vampire stuff.

      Alexander Shayatovich wcw was completely different in every way till bischoff
      started messing with it, what ended that and made the wcw era obsolete was the arrival of hulk hogan and all the other wwf big names, mean gene, macho man and everyone else showing up made it just like anything else. let me put it this way, when tna lost the octagon for the square ring they lost all originality, i.e.
      hulk hogan is that square not just him but others too who caused wcw to lose that aura that something different that made you say, wonder what the z man's up to. so yes wcw in my opinion should have always remained a no hogan zone, that's honestly it I have more but you can't read all day.

    • @beau9956
      @beau9956 7 лет назад +7

      WCW did a lot more outdoor venues because they did a lot of shows in Tampa and Atlanta where you can do stuff outdoors and had the whole "Bash at the Beach" thing which really lended it self to being at an outdoor venue.. WWE based in NY.. did shows in Chicago, Phili.. Canada places like that not really places you can do a lot of outdoor kinda stuff particularly in the colder months.

      @beau9956 7 лет назад +4

      +I Can't Remember ... WWE did copy ECW with the whole "attitude era" thing and that worked out pretty fucking well for them... they also copied the AWA with the whole "PPV" thing.. that worked out well for them..
      now, if im being honest they are starting to look just a little bit like ROH/TNA.. since most there top guys came from there.. couple of examples.. Austin Aries, Booby Roode, Kevin Owens, Rollins, Joe, Aj Styles, TJ Perkins, Cesaro...

    There's a lot of things I loved about WCW. The women were hotter, they had a great cruiser weight division and they were full of surprises. But there are a lot of things I also hated about WCW. They screwed over younger talent, while giving older former WWE talent more freedom. I also didn't like the stupid decisions they made during the years, such as giving David Arquette the belt or the finger poke of doom.
    The way you compared WWE and WCW, reminded me of DC Comics and Marvel Comics.
    DC Comics is a lot like WWE.
    Marvel is a lot like WCW.
    DC Comics has more original characters which is equivalent to WWE creating their superstars from scratch.
    Marvel basically copies some of those characters from DC which is equivalent to WCW buying WWE talent who were already main eventers.
    DC Comics usually never acknowledges Marvel, just like WWE did to WCW.
    Marvel always acknowledges DC and talks trash about them, just like WCW did to WWE.
    DC Comics usually had to keep up with competition, just like WWE did.
    Marvel Comics was innovative, which forced DC to step up and compete or die. Just like WCW was more innovative, forcing WWE to step up to compete or die.
    Eric Bischoff is basically WCW's version of Stan Lee. Eric didn't own WCW, but did make the product better. Just like Stan Lee didn't own Marvel, but did make the product better.
    Vince McMahon was simply like the multiple creators of DC superheroes. Was more original with his ideas, even if they felt too out of date with the times and needed reinventions(Big Bossman, various incarnations of The Undertaker and Triple H for example).
    DC Comics had more recognizable or familiar characters that set them apart from the competition, just like WWE.
    Marvel had to be different and set themselves apart from the competition since they knew they were always going to be compared to DC. Just like Bischoff did to WCW, knowing that Vince's WWE characters were animated and cartoonish. So Bischoff made his characters more grounded and reality based.
    I actually like both WWE and WCW, just as much as I do DC and Marvel. I like the differences that set them apart.

    I definitely agree that WCW felt more unpredictable. Looking back I really like the sense of chaos on air when something's happening in the back and the announcers are told about it, but they (and we as viewers) need to wait for a cameraman to catch everything. This was probably more due to disorganization than anything, but it made it feel real and not just something staged for that moment.

      WWE was a wrestling company producing a Television show
      the Quality of the booking was one of the key differences
      ironically enough WWE has turned into WCW they are no longer a wrestling company they are an "entertainment company" who produces a wrestling show and the shitty booking and story lines have reflected that change.

      You'd need to buy the entire WWE to do that no way WWE would give up the "ECW" "WCW" names and video library etc.. I'd start my own promotion and blend the best of old ECW, WCW and WWE focus on showcasing new talent and predicting future trends in pop culture (like ECW did) lots of pyro (Like WCW did) good long term booking (Like old WWE did)

      WWE worked with ECW and NWA in the 90s. I remember Jim Cornette has a stable for awhile for the NWA with NWA wrestlers that'd face WWF wrestlers. I also, recall WWF promoting ECW ppvs and having ECW wrestlers on their shows. While WWF is known for running territories out of business, they have worked with companies in the past and mentioned other companies. Such as in recent years they recognized NJPW.

    I always liked that the jobbers often got in a lot of punches and moves on the stars on Nitro and Thunder. Even if you know Jerry Flynn can't beat Lex Luger, they sure make it look like it for just a little while (unlike early 90s WWF where jobbers almost never hit anything). I recently saw Chavo Guerrero Jr vs Mike Enos from Thunder and I was on the edge of my seat, I had NO idea who would win. Just nearfall after nearfall.

    Growing up in GA , I miss WCW (NWA). I was never a huge WWE(F) because even as a kid it was too much of a put on. However, WWE has grown on me over the years, and had WCW "won" the war we may not have any mainstream wrestling today. Nitro was still drawing far better ratings than TNA when Time-Warner pulled the plug. The huge corporation--which Turner at that point had little to do with--didn't want wrestling on their networks no matter how good the ratings were...and whereas all of the mismanagement of money and talent may have gotten a pass from Turner--who was always a wrestling fan--the BIG corporation just wouldn't let it fly. Still, I can't help but to think of what might have been.

    • @NikateeN
      @NikateeN  8 лет назад +4

      Mark Markham I once heard that Nitro still had the best ratings on all of TNT when it was pulled... that's insane if it's true, and just goes to prove that they really wanted nothing to do with wrestling anymore... which is funny since TBS is set to air episodes of Lucha Underground, but not in the US.

    They let Scott Steiner say whatever he want leading to his rant on Ric Flair. I loved it but I could see that not going over well with the kids moms at home. WCW did seem more real and often bloody matches. Main bad thing was Hall, Nash, Lex, Henning and even Sting seemed to get really lazy and were not that concerned with actually doing good matches. Randy Savage worked hard as the main exception to this guaranty contracts, most others wanted short matches and shortcuts to end matches.

    Not only the cruiserweights, WCW had a stronger midcard, too, and the TV Title to fit them. There was an endless supply of jobbers and so and so people that you really didn't need on your screen every week but were happy to see once in a while. The likes of Wrath, Kenny Kaos, Jerry Flynn or Lenny Lane.
    Also, not everybody always needed a feud. Just let them have some matches here and there to make sure people remember them. This felt more like a competition or actual sport and less like a soap opera.

    A big difference during the mid to late 90s was WCW's promos were almost exclusively in the ring with the wrestlers on the mic whereas WWE had their promos pre recorded and backstage. Like mentioned in the video, this gave WCW a more raw/real feel that fans gravitated towards.

  • @theshooter2000
    @theshooter2000 7 лет назад +2

    Somebody mentioned it below, but I'll say it in a little more detail. WCW had a sports commentary feel. You had the play-by-play of Tony Schiavone (Bischoff not so much because he wasn't very good) calling moves and letting people know what's happening in the match. His color commentators whether heel (Bobby Heenan, Larry Zybysko) or babyface (Tenay, Dusty Rhodes) gave you insight into how the moves felt or what the wrestlers were doing or should do next.
    On the WWF side, you had Jim Ross especially in his later years narrating a match. He doesn't say such and such used a steel chair. He says so and so just laid in a sickening THUD with that steel chair. The color men are almost always heels and rather than give insight into the match, they're just there to antagonize Ross or root against the babyfaces. WCW tried to have Mark Madden do the same and it didn't work (not Madden's fault by the way, he was great at getting over how scary Scott Steiner was, but he was legit scared of the guy). They also tried to have Tony Schiavone be like Jim Ross when Russo showed up, but it failed as well because Tony isn't a story teller, he's a baseball announcer (and a great one, his voice has a perfect sports feel to it). When WCW turned into imitation WWF (Russo era), they ended up being a hodgepodge of announcing that just didn't work.
    Something that really made Tony stand out was that he called the match like a fan. What I mean is that Tony felt like he believed it was real. When Luger beat Hogan on Nitro for the title, Tony went as berserk as the crowd in Detroit. When Goldberg beat Hogan for the title on Nitro, Tony let the crowd do the talking as if he couldn't believe what he was seeing himself. When Hogan returned to the red and yellow, Tony was just as excited to see Hogan come back as the fans in Idaho. You NEVER get that with Jim Ross. Jim Ross always feels like he knows what he's seeing is fake, but he's going to tell you the story that you're watching. When Stone Cold stuns somebody, it's like oh that Stone Cold, got him again.
    Also, WCW shifted their commentators back and forth between at ringside and the entrance ramp. In the early years of Nitro hour 1 was at the ring, then hour 2 was at the ramp. Then, they went exclusively at the ramp for a while followed by exclusively at ringside.

    entrance music and the "titantron" were also different. WWF had amazing music and "titantron" for each wrestler and that was part of their gimmick; but in WCW the only song that mattered was the NWO and the Goldberg one. the rest of the wrestlers would enter the ring with a very generic tune, or some "regular song" like DDP entering with a Nirvana song

    I would say one big thing you didn't mention is that certain big names in WCW famously had "creative control" clauses in their contracts which on one hand protected them as headliners and allowed certain talent to contribute their own ideas to storylines, but at the same time caused numerous problems. In WWF/E, while certain wrestlers have clout, they don't call the shots. Evidence of this is when Austin quit the company rather than randomly put Brock Lesnar over on free TV. Obviously if he had a CC clause in his contract, he could have nixed that.
