Agreed. SYM was such a MASSIVE improvement over Just Bring It so for there to have been an equally big leap from there to HCTP is just really impressive and a testament to how great of a game it is.
I used to play this with friends. It was always a party. One friend, who was hilarious, would do the season mode with a weird looking created wrestler. He would be in a six-man tag, and use the input to call his teammates into the ring before saying "get him boys!"
One of the sweetest things about HCTP (one of the many many sweet things) is the feedback of the collision detection and how it synced visually and audio wise, every hit felt sweet, and every grapple felt intense. Heck, one of the most simplest examples of this is getting that perfect chair shot, the Dualshock vibrating in your hand as the chairshot viscerally bounced off the opponent
Exactly. I've just commented before reading this that HCTP was the first game where the wrestlers felt as if they had real weight to them, and not just computer sprites floating around the screen.

An absolutely 🐐ed wrestling game from my childhood. There's really no understating what an uphill battle it was if you decided to play as a midcarder in Season Mode. Wrestling Gods help you if you were playing as someone like The Hurricane, Steven Richards, or Christian and end up facing Goldberg or Brock Lesnar lol.
tbh thats the fun part, playing smart against the higher rating guys it great. My favourite thing to do is fight on the outside to weaken Brock/Greenberg more than I would in the ring without risking being falled (since count outs mostly dont exist in career mode for some reason?) Cheesing someone like Goldfinch always made my day
Oh my god, just Brock out of the gate. One running charge and you’re done. Always got a finger on the R2 button just in case he decides to start running at you.
While my brother and I were fans of the series from the first game, by this time I couldn't just buy every game I wanted so I waited on this one until I saw my brother play it. I am dead serious when I say the main reason I bought this game was because he let me see create a wrestler and they legitimately had Super Saiyan hair as one of the styles. Just straight up Goku's SSJ hair and as a big DBZ fan I marked out seeing that and got the game soon after. 😅 It was of course super fun and we both played the game to death. I'll just never forget my character with his goddamn SSJ hair absolutely destroying guys left and right. The game indeed lives up the hype. My biggest match was an Iron Mam match against Lesnar where my guy whose moves favored Taker's, just went to war. I think I used something like 14 Last Rides and I kicked out of a few F5 pins too. Fun memories from better times.

I loves this game as a kid! I created 30 superstars, made them unique, had factions, tag teams and played stats to them all betweem 70-95 overall. Wouldn't put that much effort to a game these days, but as a kid I loved it and had ton of fun while playing.
My heart will always be with the 2 OG Smackdown games on PS1.. Especially the crowd graphics it looked like an arena packed 50K deep, whereas the PS2 SDs looked more like the Acclaim WWF attitude games. With about 20 people on the audience.
The season modes in the old THQ/Yuke games were awesome. I didn't mind replaying storylines from TV. In fact, I loved it. I could create my own wrestler and they could go through some of my favourite stories. Nowadays you're taking selfies and eating cuisine from different countries, or playing against characters that don't exist in real life... What happened?
I think a big reason why smackdown vs raw doesn't get the same level of fanfare is because here comes the pain was SUCH a huge leap forward. The tug of war submissions for example actually made it feel like a real wrestling match and not the coin toss of previous titles. The grapple system opened up so many possibilities and allowed for much greater control. And then the limb specific damage. SvR felt like more of the same. I still loved it, but it wasn't nearly as revolutionary as HCTP.
I have so many memories of playing this game 😃😀👍👏🙌 and another game that I spend way too much time playing. The exhibition mode and season mode. Plus this is the game that me and my cousin would have super fun as hell.
One year ago in your 'Super Showdown Disaster: Goldberg vs The Undertaker' vid, I commented... "There is a different place and time where Goldberg v. Undertaker would be a match for the ages.... WWE SmackDown: Here Comes the Pain on PS2" With that, it is now time to tell that story. Years ago, me and a friend ran our own "RAW vs. SmackDown" drafts building our rosters, creating match cards and we would play against each other. I drew Goldberg and my friend drew Legend Undertaker. One day, we put Goldberg against Legend Undertaker in a Last Man Standing match. That match would last near glorious 30-45 mins of repeated weapon shots, finishers (both having pinning finishers sure didn't help) and who knows what else. THAT was the real Goldberg vs. Undertaker match and one the peak moment of my time with this amazing game. Thank you for covering this.
I just bought a PS2 again (haven’t had one since I was a teenager, 35 now) just to play HCTP. I should get it in the mail by the end of this week, I think I’m more excited than when I was a kid 😂
I just wanted to drop this gem. This game didn't have fights in the crowd. We'll boyo when I tell you me and my 2 cousin's found away. 6 way elemenation chamber one person climbs on top of the pod one person climbs on top of the turn buckle or I believe the side of the cage and the person on top of the pod jumps off and boom you in the crowd you of course take damage but that was probably still is a glitch lol 😅
This game along with DBZ Budokai 2 were my first games on the PS2, I still remember playing this before going trick or treating on Halloween. Still holds up after all these years, I know people tout No mercy as the greatest wrestling game ever but I'll always say this game to be the best.
4:55 I just love playing with my favorite version of the Rock, the Hollywood Rock. The entrance itself, even though it was shorter, still gives me goosebumps.
One of my favorite things is in the tag team story line, I was able to pick my partner. Because my previous CAW completed the story, he was eligible to be my partner. So it was cool that I could import my CAWs in certain stories.
All the new elements really made it feel like a fusion of the Smackdown games with No Mercy...the addition of blood, the submission bar, the counters, the backstage brawls & the career mode were all part of that. My personal favourite was Smackdown vs Raw 2007, but even that was just a tweaked version of Here Comes The Pain rather than a full blown revolution like it!
Smackdown SYM and HTCP are both the best Wrestling Games of all time to me. So much fun still playing both, they don't make them like that anymore sadly.
This Game is phenomenal i have this on the Ps2 the gameplay the controls are great the match types are amazing i love season mode glad i got this Game a few years ago along with my ps2 awesome video.
The roster unique vast amount of grapples per character & graphics for the time. If they sim-ed it up a bit (selling) & didn't remove characters(Jeff Hardy, Hulk Hogan Etc.) it could have been even BETTER.
Mechanically this is far and away my favorite wrestling game. I just wish the roster was more like Smackdown 2 and there were more paths in the career mode
This was a goat of the game along with Smackdown Vs Raw 06 for me but lets be honest, most of the older games, movies of generations ago were much better. In depth. When developers actually gave a damn about their players.
Loved playing this game with my mates using a multitap, we had a blast we were all in year 8 at the time, we each created characters, did elimination chambers etc, we quite often had 6 people playing at once.
I love season mode in this game. I'm visiting my parents and fired up the old PS2 with HCTP. I won the US Title with Cena, after a while Vince McMahon came and attacked JR of all people. Then before the next show, Edge attacked me backstage and it turned into a brawl in the streets. They don't make them like this no more
Still an amazing game to play to this day. I recently did a playthrough with RVD ruling the mid card both an intercontinental and hardcore champion. It was crazy how some nights he was booked in two matches back to back.
Appreciate the video. It's this 1 and No Mercy. Those appear to be the top 2...I personally have this 1 (Here Comes The Pain), WWE 13, and WWE All Stars.
What I love about this game is that this was the last game where almost all of the movesets from Smackdown 1 up to SYM can still be used. So basically there’s a lot of options for your caw. What I only hate about this game is that you need to do a gut kick to perform a front finisher for almost all of the wrestlers. Atleast Rock, Brock and Goldberg have wake up moves.
I remembered that this game got me back into wrestling specifically for John Cena and Batista right when they were about to get pushed. This was the first game I had ever owned when I was younger as others came from renting through Blockbuster and I can't even imagine the amount of hours I put into making female wrestlers and finding a way to play through the season by simply changing their gender to level up their stats Great times.
It's unreal how full the career mode felt in this game, and you could pick anyone on the roster. Incredible game
I thought it was a bit repetitive. Although recently I’ve discovered that there are hidden routes you can go with specific results in matches etc.

tbh thats the fun part, playing smart against the higher rating guys it great. My favourite thing to do is fight on the outside to weaken Brock/Greenberg more than I would in the ring without risking being falled (since count outs mostly dont exist in career mode for some reason?)
Cheesing someone like Goldfinch always made my day
Oh my god, just Brock out of the gate. One running charge and you’re done. Always got a finger on the R2 button just in case he decides to start running at you.
I played the story mode so much that everyone's wins and loss record was all at max numbers. This was the most fun i ever had in a game.
There's a really good mod out there for this game. Dubbed the Ultimate Edition, it restores Hogan, Warrior and Jeff Hardy, and has much more.
How does this work?
While my brother and I were fans of the series from the first game, by this time I couldn't just buy every game I wanted so I waited on this one until I saw my brother play it. I am dead serious when I say the main reason I bought this game was because he let me see create a wrestler and they legitimately had Super Saiyan hair as one of the styles. Just straight up Goku's SSJ hair and as a big DBZ fan I marked out seeing that and got the game soon after. 😅
It was of course super fun and we both played the game to death.
Super saiyan my guy 👍🏻
0:41 this song is so cool. I remember it playing during the matches.
HCTP was the end of the era of great wrestling - video games. From 2000-2003 we had wwf no mercy on the 64, the very first two Smackdown games on the original PlayStation.
The Smackdown game series culminated with HCTP. The game added realism and depth to the gameplay. The overall experience is exhilarating compared to other wrestling games. It had everything you could possibly want in a wwe game at the time. A full checklist of qualities and complexities to ensure that you never got bored of playing it. It’s so well polished with smooth graphics, adjustable and convenient controls, a surplus of match stipulations and a sufficient roster of superstars to play from. HCTP is the equivalent of what San Andreas is to the GTA series. Simply unmissable.
I loves this game as a kid! I created 30 superstars, made them unique, had factions, tag teams and played stats to them all betweem 70-95 overall. Wouldn't put that much effort to a game these days, but as a kid I loved it and had ton of fun while playing.
“Welp… Here comes the pain, Cole” - Tazz
Me and the boys throw this in the PS2 every hang out religiously
My all time favorite. I still play it today.
Same here. Was playing it last night as Kane
@@TheShapeshifter Me too
My heart will always be with the 2 OG Smackdown games on PS1..
It sure was fun to play, first PlayStation wrestling game since WWF Attitude to feature wrestlers bleeding.
Yes and I loved that this one didn’t have them bleeding in random areas
I think a big reason why smackdown vs raw doesn't get the same level of fanfare is because here comes the pain was SUCH a huge leap forward.
The tug of war submissions for example actually made it feel like a real wrestling match and not the coin toss of previous titles. The grapple system opened up so many possibilities and allowed for much greater control. And then the limb specific damage.
SvR felt like more of the same. I still loved it, but it wasn't nearly as revolutionary as HCTP.
Perfectly said this game was ahead of its time. I would love a remaster for the PS5
I have so many memories of playing this game 😃😀👍👏🙌 and another game that I spend way too much time playing. The exhibition mode and season mode. Plus this is the game that me and my cousin would have super fun as hell.
MEEEE tooooo
Proof that you don't need commentary
One year ago in your 'Super Showdown Disaster: Goldberg vs The Undertaker' vid, I commented...
"There is a different place and time where Goldberg v. Undertaker would be a match for the ages....
WWE SmackDown: Here Comes the Pain on PS2"
With that, it is now time to tell that story.
17:05 that Undertaker getting slapped animation is priceless 🤣🤣
I just bought a PS2 again (haven’t had one since I was a teenager, 35 now) just to play HCTP. I should get it in the mail by the end of this week, I think I’m more excited than when I was a kid 😂
I need like 50 more videos documenting Scotty's career mode lol.💪😂
Amazing video. You should do more hctp season mode commentaries this was really fun.
Your Big Poppa Pump career had me rolling. The unintentional humour from the game, and your deadpan delivery was a great mix.
I used to just stare at the disc sometimes when I couldn’t play it, and fantasize about all the matches I would have. GOAT 🐐
The narration of your play through was hilarious!
No Mercy isn't better than Revenge.
4:55 I just love playing with my favorite version of the Rock, the Hollywood Rock. The entrance itself, even though it was shorter, still gives me goosebumps.
The GOAT of Wrestling games. No discussion. Still the funniest to play until today.
The roster of HCTP was classic. Its gameplay was great as well. And the camera angles were advanced.
I didn't expect that Taker slap! Lmao!
FINALLY!!! BIOS IS REVIEWING THE GREATEST WWE GAME OF ALL TIME!!
There was so much stuff you could make and the impact of the moves looked sick!
I managed an Arcade club, we were playing so much, that at the end it was just counter city! 😅 nobody could win anymore
2K needs to bring back 3 Stages of Hell, Lumber Jack, Slobber Knocker, and Special Referee match types!
One of my favorite things is in the tag team story line, I was able to pick my partner. Because my previous CAW completed the story, he was eligible to be my partner. So it was cool that I could import my CAWs in certain stories.
HCTP: Gamplay + WWE2K19 Roster + WWE2K23: Graphics & Customization options + SYM: Season mode + LOW 2 storymode = The perfect wrestling game.
This game has some of the best backstage areas.
Smackdown SYM and HTCP are both the best Wrestling Games of all time to me.
So much fun still playing both, they don't make them like that anymore sadly.
More videos like this please Bios Man 😊👍
This Game is phenomenal i have this on the Ps2 the gameplay the controls are great the match types are amazing i love season mode glad i got this Game a few years ago along with my ps2 awesome video.
The match types were the best especially 3 stages of hell
@@Chuck_ELI Absolutely Agree.
Hope your vacations going good, Got my Smokey shirt the other day 🤘
The roster unique vast amount of grapples per character & graphics for the time.
That load time in Smackdown 2 🤦🏽♂️
17:03, given the other option, The Undertaker could have been in that faction
That game was my first ever WWE game back on the PS2
This was a goat of the game along with Smackdown Vs Raw 06 for me but lets be honest, most of the older games, movies of generations ago were much better. In depth. When developers actually gave a damn about their players.
I still have this game to this day, with my PS2 that I still have right below my PS5. 💯
They don't make them like this no more
This game got 3 of my non-wrestling fans into wrestling, and then going to Monday Night Raw in Buffalo, soon thereafter.
ITS HERE! Its here everyone!
This game definitely had the jam 🍓
I remembered that this game got me back into wrestling specifically for John Cena and Batista right when they were about to get pushed.
This was the first game I had ever owned when I was younger as others came from renting through Blockbuster and I can't even imagine the amount of hours I put into making female wrestlers and finding a way to play through the season by simply changing their gender to level up their stats Great times.
Your commentary was worth watching this.
Just got it again recently it's just as amazingly fun as it was decades prior
Still play this from time to time. Nothing like having a friend and doin some tornado tags no dq lol
I was always a Smackdown kid so these 2 games have a special place in my heart. They were also the first wrestling games I ever played!
I loved this game so much. Awesome memories.
The whole tag team thing was funny great video.
