SmackDown: "Here Comes The Pain" was released in 2003 for the PlayStation 2. The game is considered by many to be the pinnacle of the SmackDown series; the very best pro wrestling game developed by Yukes.
SmackDown HCTP introduced new match types, a new and more streamlined Season Mode amd an updated roster featuring superstars such as Brock Lesnar and Bill Goldberg. The biggest new addition, however, was found in the gameplay itself. Smackdown "Here Comes The Pain" uses a new grapple system that granted each superstar a ton of new moves and, along with this, HCTP got a speed boost which made matches a lot of fun to play.

HCTP was the end of the era of great wrestling - video games. From 2000-2003 we had wwf no mercy on the 64, the very first two smackdown games on the original PlayStation. The smackdown game series culminated with HCTP. The game added realism and depth to the gameplay. The overall experience is exhilarating compared to other wrestling games. It had everything you could possibly want in a wwe game at the time. A full checklist of qualities and complexities to ensure that you never got bored of playing it. It’s so well polished with smooth graphics, adjustable and convenient controls, a surplus of match stipulations and a sufficient roster of superstars to play from. HCTP is the equivalent of what San Andreas is to the GTA series. Simply unmissable.

One of the sweetest things about HCTP (one of the many many sweet things) is the feedback of the collision detection and how it synced visually and audio wise, every hit felt sweet, and every grapple felt intense. Heck, one of the most simplest examples of this is getting that perfect chair shot, the Dualshock vibrating in your hand as the chairshot viscerally bounced off the opponent

Steiner did the maths, and the maths didn't go in his favor with his WWE tenure when Kurt Angle wasn't in Raw. He had a 33 2/3rds% chance of winning The Big Gold on Raw.
If he was on Smackdown instead with Kurt Angle being on the blue brand, he would've had a 140 8/3rd% chance of winning the Undisputed Championship.

While my brother and I were fans of the series from the first game, by this time I couldn't just buy every game I wanted so I waited on this one until I saw my brother play it. I am dead serious when I say the main reason I bought this game was because he let me see create a wrestler and they legitimately had Super Saiyan hair as one of the styles. Just straight up Goku's SSJ hair and as a big DBZ fan I marked out seeing that and got the game soon after. 😅
It was of course super fun and we both played the game to death. I'll just never forget my character with his goddamn SSJ hair absolutely destroying guys left and right. The game indeed lives up the hype. My biggest match was an Iron Mam match against Lesnar where my guy whose moves favored Taker's, just went to war. I think I used something like 14 Last Rides and I kicked out of a few F5 pins too.

I remember when my 71 overall character got into a rivalry with Brock Lesnar and I got absolutely annihilated every time until the final showdown came.
My whole body icon was red and I managed to kick out of the 2nd F-5 because Brock did not go for the cover immediately.
I remember hitting him with a chair shot to the head while the referee was not looking and it turned orange because I already got a couple of lucky shots at him earlier.
I remember a few running around and hitting him in the head with some leg lariats.
Until I hit the sweet chin music and it was game over for Brock.
It was as if I won the WWE title at Wrestlemania myself. That's how huge it was.
The victory felt so sweet and I remember it the best wrestling game ever.
I dropped the title at the next PPV but I was on my way to become the highest rated wrestler on the roster.
Forgive the rant but this game is one of my sweetest memory ever.
Now I'll go look for an emulator and try to get this game again.
    Cheers.

My heart will always be with the 2 OG Smackdown games on PS1.. Especially the crowd graphics it looked like an arena packed 50K deep, whereas the PS2 SDs looked more like the Acclaim WWF attitude games. With about 20 people on the audience.

I loves this game as a kid! I created 30 superstars, made them unique, had factions, tag teams and played stats to them all betweem 70-95 overall. Wouldn't put that much effort to a game these days, but as a kid I loved it and had ton of fun while playing.

I love season mode in this game. I'm visiting my parents and fired up the old PS2 with HCTP. I won the US Title with Cena, after a while Vince McMahon came and attacked JR of all people. Then before the next show, Edge attacked me backstage and it turned into a brawl in the streets. They don't make them like this no more

I remember around 2003 when it was released, it consumed my life and my best friend. we're playing 8 hours a day at their home, fighting each other or the cpu we are having a blast. The only time we took a break is when his dad brings pizza, and his dad loves pizza a lot and that is the only food he eat everyday and so are we, what a fun times, now both us have our own family, and sadly we no longer play the new WWE 2k games, as we no longer watch wrestling anymore I guess we grow old and got wiser.

This was the first game I had ever owned when I was younger as others came from renting through Blockbuster and I can't even imagine the amount of hours I put into making female wrestlers and finding a way to play through the season by simply changing their gender to level up their stats Great times.

I'm like you in the sense that I feel more attached to Shut Your Mouth. It was the reason I started becoming a late nighter in elementary school. There were some weekends I'd be up until 5 in the morning playing around with everything it had to offer. HCTP just never got me hooked that way. I dont remember anything about it besides playing as Brock/Goldberg. SVR2006 was another one that had me obsessed as a kid. I really really miss my PS2.

One of my favorite things is in the tag team story line, I was able to pick my partner. Because my previous CAW completed the story, he was eligible to be my partner. So it was cool that I could import my CAWs in certain stories.

I just wanted to drop this gem. This game didn't have fights in the crowd. We'll boyo when I tell you me and my 2 cousin's found away. 6 way elemenation chamber one person climbs on top of the pod one person climbs on top of the turn buckle or I believe the side of the cage and the person on top of the pod jumps off and boom you in the crowd you of course take damage but that was probably still is a glitch lol 😅

One year ago in your 'Super Showdown Disaster: Goldberg vs The Undertaker' vid, I commented...
"There is a different place and time where Goldberg v. Undertaker would be a match for the ages....
WWE SmackDown: Here Comes the Pain on PS2"
With that, it is now time to tell that story.
Years ago, me and a friend ran our own "RAW vs. SmackDown" drafts building our rosters, creating match cards and we would play against each other. I drew Goldberg and my friend drew Legend Undertaker. One day, we put Goldberg against Legend Undertaker in a Last Man Standing match. That match would last near glorious 30-45 mins of repeated weapon shots, finishers (both having pinning finishers sure didn't help) and who knows what else. THAT was the real Goldberg vs. Undertaker match and one the peak moment of my time with this amazing game.
    Thank you for covering this.

What I love about this game is that this was the last game where almost all of the movesets from Smackdown 1 up to SYM can still be used. So basically there’s a lot of options for your caw.
What I only hate about this game is that you need to do a gut kick to perform a front finisher for almost all of the wrestlers. Atleast Rock, Brock and Goldberg have wake up moves.

All the new elements really made it feel like a fusion of the Smackdown games with No Mercy...the addition of blood, the submission bar, the counters, the backstage brawls & the career mode were all part of that. My personal favourite was Smackdown vs Raw 2007, but even that was just a tweaked version of Here Comes The Pain rather than a full blown revolution like it!

  • @gamesmash9859
    @gamesmash9859 8 месяцев назад +2

I think a big reason why smackdown vs raw doesn't get the same level of fanfare is because here comes the pain was SUCH a huge leap forward.
The tug of war submissions for example actually made it feel like a real wrestling match and not the coin toss of previous titles. The grapple system opened up so many possibilities and allowed for much greater control. And then the limb specific damage.
SvR felt like more of the same. I still loved it, but it wasn't nearly as revolutionary as HCTP.
