Hiya Wally! I'm almost caught up on the isopods playlist; I've gone from zero to isopod fanatic super quickly :-D I wanted to let you know that a few of the more recent videos in the playlist (right now numbers 53, 55, 61, and 65) are from other channels and not at all about isopods :-P They must have snuck in like mancae! (check it out, me using isopod words in casual conversation lol)
Wow Wally, I wasn’t expecting that. Thank you so very much my friend. P. Werneri is a species that I have yet to find locally or even nationally at a reasonable price. P. spatulatus is one of the only species I have not had success with but will definitely try again. They seem to have somewhat vanished from the Canadian market. I absolutely love the trilobite look of them and werneri. We can all Only get better together by experimenting and sharing our experiences with each like you my friend have done for years. Thank you again my friend for the shoutout and very kind words
I must say, I've noticed with a lot of the PODS that are recommended to be kept dry, they weren't breeding until I started keeping their enclosures a little more moist!
@@SupremeGecko I mean they are crustaceans and all. They need moisture to breathe So I think this whole being kept dry thing totally goes against their anatomy and Natural Evolution.
Astonishingly helpful and I hope your P. werneri are thriving. I'm so infatuated with those wide skirts, they're so pretty whether they're on some more expensive and exotic isopod, or just a garden type O. asellus.
@@SupremeGecko Watching this video again. Would you consider doing an update video on isopods you've already featured on your channel? There are so many that you've shown that I personally would love to know how are doing now - ones that didn't take off well but might be thriving now. I'd also love a tour around your isopod tubs. How you keep them, organisation, which ones you can comfortably leave, and which you need to maintain often, the environment, pest control, etc. I want as much knowledge as I can squeeze out of you, Wally!
It's hard to know the ideal conditions. Just like with people, some like warm climates, and some are just plain crazy and live where it's -8..... j/k Wally. Keeping a partial wet partial dry enclosure is the easiest to allow thr isopods to go where they want. But we should probably notice which side they hang out on most and make adjustments accordingly. Larger moist side or larger dry side.
YES! Great point (about the isopods- not about me preferring -8 weather. I only live here because my wife;s family is in the area and I am scared to death of bringing up a move to her :)
You know... there should be an "Isopods on Parade" film on the Porcellio werneri somewhere in the library vaults of the Royal Society for the Appreciation of Isopods... It might take me a bit... but I'll look for one...
I know with my starter tubs they tend to stay overly moist. When I transition to the larger tubs which have more ventilation and stay a little dryer I usually get a stall in the development of the culture. So from my experience I would say they will adapt if conditions are within acceptable but changes take a while to adjust to.
#1 I love that coffee mug its great .#2 great information and great helpful tips I wish more people would follow these helpful tips like ask lots of questions from other breeders and keepers it would help build up their confidence and help the become better and more responsible keepers and I feel that would make them enjoy the hobby even more because of the education they get and the experiences they have .#3 you should write a book on isopods and get other experienced breeders and keepers contribute to the book I think it would be a great seller #4 thank you for sharing my comment .....and watch those web searches you may see something you don't want to see lmao .. plus I watched this video 2 time and I never seen where you called someone out at the end of the video or did I miss something ??? keep up the amazing work Wally thank you for sharing ...
That coffee mug has a really special place in my heart. See the sticker? Christal put that on the cup a few years ago, gave me a hug, and said she loved me. Funny, it does not come off in washing. As you know, I love to share and try to help other keepers. A book..... Hmmmmmmm
P. Werneri are pretty cool I hope to get some down the road but I'm on scabers and perracae another Greek species for right now gotta start slow in the hobby and I'll have to check the isopods out from brittany ive heard she's pretty nice to work with and provides nice and healthy isopods
I feel like your perception of ventilation is skewed. That bin you put them into is highly ventilated! Here in Arizona, I would have to add water to the moist portion every single day!
There are! I believe there are actually 2. I don't own one as there is so much great info on the web. Let me know if you cannot find them (I think just searching isopod book on Amazon will find it) I will grab the link(s) for you.
I love these little Porcellio werneri - so cute! I've been experimenting with ventilation for my pods as I try to find Just Right for my climate. I'm at the stage where I've introduced too much ventilation >_< But that's easier to fix than too little :-)
I agree, sometimes it's good to experiment (well within reason). You cannot innovate, if you only follow what's already established! But does that incident of P. werneri reproduction tell you that this species appreciates a bit more moisture or simply that it can tolerate it? Maybe a shift from dry to more moist does simulate a seasonal response?
Right on on 'within reason' and about no change=complacency and no innovation. So... why do I get these amazing theories 'seasonal response' AFTER I do the video and not before so I can put the theory IN the video :)
hello! New to the channel, i just watched your video about dubia roaches and keeping theese. I think i will try to make a colony, how many would be great to start? I only have one small bearded dragon to feed, so i would like to not have waay too many. Thanks and great content btw! cheers from denmark
very nice. I just put some Scaber into my bioactive (found some at the reptile expo so now when I get the ones from you I will set them up in cultures since I have another bioactive I am planning on making soon) And I have been worried the enviroment is not ideal, this gives me hope that they will maybe thrive for me and I wont have to worry about a crash happening.
You know, I am stealing that name! I have seriously thought of doing a shirt and using Podfather. Would you mind? If you say yes, that gives me all legal rights even past the $1M in sales :)
Can I win isopods? I would already be happy if someone would trade my expansus for something I don't have. I'm looking forward to werneri, silvestri and sevilla caramel. Unfortunately my haasi and bolivari colonies died last year due to shitty enclosures. Magnificus survived, they had offspring that is maturing now and I hope they can recover like my expansus did. Those managed to breed to over 100 from about 6. Enclosure is so full that babies crawl around randomly at night.

Thank you Wally.

I must say, I've noticed with a lot of the PODS that are recommended to be kept dry, they weren't breeding until I started keeping their enclosures a little more moist!
Great point! I think you might be right about this. It's all perception. Someone hears "DRY' and wants to keep them 100% bone dry!

@@johnnygalaxy9022 oh exactly. You get it.
@@SupremeGecko I think we're going to have to write a proper book on isopod keeping. LOL. It would save many needless isopod deaths :-)
I find my Porcellio sp. 'Sevilla' dont use the dry side very often. they often stay at the moist side of the enclosure.
That's interesting, and a bit outside what I observe with my setups.

So did we (scientifically speaking)
