The TERRIFYING Triwizard Tournament of 1792 - Harry Potter Explained

- Hey everyone,
Welcome to another installment of Harry Potter Theory. In today’s video, we’re going to be discussing a piece of Hogwarts history - the triwizard tournament. More specifically, we’re going to be diving all the way back to the year 1792- the last year that the tournament ran before 1994- when Harry ends up participating. The tournament dates back 700 years in total, and managed to run uninhibited until 1792. So, what prompted this 200 year hiatus? Let’s start with a bit of history:
“The Triwizard Tournament was first established some seven hundred years ago as a friendly competition between the three largest European schools of wizardry: Hogwarts, Beauxbatons, and Durmstrang. A champion was selected to represent each school, and the three champions competed in three magical tasks. The schools took it in turns to host the tournament once every five years, and it was generally agreed to be a most excellent way of establishing ties between young witches and wizards of different nationalities”.
The triwizard tournament certainly becomes an integral part of the Harry Potter story, and is a main plot driver in the Goblet of Fire. We see Harry and the other champions fighting for their school’s honour, competing in three tasks designed to test the Champion's courage, intelligence, resourcefulness, and magical ability. So- what happened in 1792?

Rowling should set about writing “Hogwarts: A History”. She would sell a lot of books.
so true i would definently read it
Yes I would buy it and enjoy, same for 1001 magical herbs and fungi. As well as most of the other books mentioned in the Harry Potter books.

And get film adaptations of the formation of the school all the way up to fantastic beasts

"We promise there will be no more mortal danger like the cockatrice"
"but sir didn't we add the dragons this time?"
"But is it a cockatrice tho?"
The cockatrices I know have abilities similar to a basilisk. And, due to it's size, often gets underestimated, regarding the threat level they pose.
@@Timberwolf69 yes but if I do recall I don't think it was as high of danger or even mentioned no less in fantastic beasts (book)
@@Menagerie_OS As I said, cockatrices are very often underestimated, because they are quite a bit smaller than a dragon. I'm not sure if their petrification effect wears off over time or can be countered with a spell/charm/potion, but in the moment of petrification, these victims are prone to severe injuries. And if you happen to get bitten, you better hope someone has the antidote at hand...
@@Timberwolf69 yes and again I haven't seen documentation of it in the fantastic beasts book.
@@Menagerie_OS I take it that they might be quite hard to find. And also way too dangerous, as they are very agile little buggers. Thus Newt might have refrained from putting knowledge about them out into the world.
Who knows how many other dangerous animmals live out there that didn't make it into the book for these reasons?

My theory why Dumbledore wanted to hold it is because he knew Voldemort would return. He wanted to hold it because the tournament brings magical community together. He wanted the schools to form friendships so that when Voldemort returned, the magical community would have those ties and hopefully work together to defeat Voldemort.
I think it did work.

I always wondered why they brought this tournament back.. like wtf Dumbledore.. you know Harry has a cloud of death over his head.
My theory is Dumbledore knows Voldemort has returned, and he knows that the best way to beat Voldemort is if the Magical Community comes together. One of the whole points is to make magical friends at the tournament. If it weren’t for Voldemort interfering, the tournament would have created a more interconnected magical community.
My theory.
Wow that really makes sense
Given the fact that Dumbledore has been raising him like a pig for slaughter in Deathly Hallows, yea no wonder lmao

"We once had that tournament where we let 3 kids fight each other in dangerous, sometimes deadly, tasks."
"Sounds fun, why did it stop?"
"Oh, last time the teachers were attacked by a monster the kids were supposed to deal with. It was terrible."
"Understandable."
cedric didnt die to the tournament. the tournament went perfectly smooth. crouch jr just cursed the cup into a portkey and then cedric died to wormtail. the tournament was done well
I mean... Sure no one died from the tournament, but that was largely luck. Harry's dragon broke free and chased him all over the grounds. They casually let mer people kidnap four students as bait. They placed a sphinx, a creature known for killing and eating people that answer its riddles wrong, in the maze. Sure no one died. But saying they wouldn't be in mortal danger is flat out wrong.
@@13vatra don't confuse the movies with the books, that unnecessary scene of the dragon chasing Harry all over Hogwarts never happened!

Why did Dumbledore agree to have dragons in the tournament? That seems really dangerous for the spectators. What if the dragon got loose or breathed fire into the stands... (Not counting the movie version which is ridiculous...)
Ridiculous? I happened to like that scene very much
The Movie Scene Was Gonna Be Even More Ridiculous. The Firector Originally Wanted The Dragon To Burn Down The Forbidden Forest.
Also the fact that the spectator stands were WOODEN
Well the Dragon Harry Potter was given did ran into the stand it’s crazy the stands aren’t protected from these kinds of things.

Will pose no risks to the student this year: The events include fighting dragons, saving someone from the bottom of the lake, and a cursed maze. The dragons are also random and not equal at all. Not to mention there may be death eaters who want to kill at least one of the contestants. No risk at all. Oh one of the contestants is 14 and may not have enough knowledge to compete? So what? Love the video, i really like the intro
Imagine if the Triwizard was on in Dumbledore's time. He would have won it without breaking a sweat! Tom Riddle, on the other hand, would have killed the other two contestants and probably half the spectators and judges! 😂😂😂
How are they going going to say "no champion himself or herself in mortal danger." Then put some teenagers against dragons in the first challenge?
Thank you! I have that question myself. The assurance sure doesn't seem to be truthful. "Well, yes, you're just a young student, and not really very experienced, and yes, you're going up against a VERY nasty dragon that SURE CAN kill you (and others), but you won't really be in mortal danger."
Really? Just how does that work if "something" happens with that dragon? What if it decides that "Today's the day for frying a lot of people"?
Also, what about the second challenge with the people under the lake who had to be rescued? If a rescue attempt had failed, what would have happened to them? Would they have drowned/died? If not, then what's the point of using them in the challenge at all? If all that challenge really amounted to was some weird version of "capture the flag", but using people in place of a flag, I'm not seeing much sense (and certainly not much wisdom) in that.
So what's really the truth about the situations here? "Well, the champion isn't in mortal danger (which isn't really, seriously true), but friends and family of his/her and others may well be. Oh, and by the way - We'll be using champion's friends and even family as pawns in one of the trials."
@@jamesritter5078 in the book it says that in the second task even if a champion couldn't rescue their hostage Dumbledore would have never let them drown.
@@rumanatarafder616 - Okay, then what we have with that is an extremely weird (and rather stupid, IMO) version of the "capture the flag" game, but using people instead of a flag. Which begs the question - Why do it that way at all? Instead of (supposedly, but not really) putting people's lives at risk, make the "flag" something else that's very valuable but not as dangerous.

Question is, was the voldemort incident cause for another Tournament break or did it continue ?
It is said in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child though that the tournament did not continue because of that incident with Cedric Diggory but I really don't know because majority of the fans doesn't consider the cursed child canon even though J.K. Rowling said it should be considered canon.
@@torib713 she just said it because she's probably being paid for everything that is sold related to harry potter, but the story ignores tens of laws that were set in the original series
@Erik Phers
Maybe you're right that J.K. Rowling allowing this to be canon has something to do with money but it just really disappoint me to the point where I really want to cry because I'm really such a big fan of Harry Potter but she just let this other third party author to ruin her story.
@@torib713 I think it can be cannon on ONE condition: It is, for any reason, no matter how valid, to even be CONSIDERED part of the original timeline. I say that because it, as Hermione put it, "Meddles with time." And, as she said again, "There are serious consequences for wizards who meddle with time, Harry."
@Allen Dishman
Well yes that Harry Potter information about meddling time is cannon but Cursed Child has just so many loopholes and absurd information that doesn't really make sense that I don't like to consider it fully cannon.
Your voice is so amazing, soothing and mesmerizing.

Cedric Diggory's death really had nothing to do with the Triwizard Tournament they weren't supposed to be teleported to a graveyard to face off against Wormtail and Voldemort. If they hadn't had the tournament that year, there would have been a diferent attempt made to abduct Harry Potter, where even more students may have died as a result of being in the vicinity of Harry Potter when the Death Eaters made their move.
That was just a dark wizard attack which I suppose is just an everyday risk for people that live in the Wizarding World in a time when there's an evil dark wizard on the loose killing people.
In 1994 they had hoped that 3 contestants would be alive at the end which they technically achieved
When they brought it back, they restricted the rules. Dumbledore made so no students were to be killed. In the old days of triwizard tournaments you were allowed to kill each other.
Lets have a video on the history of Beauxbatons and Durmstrang please! :)
Dumbledore: We’ll make sure no one is in mortal danger!
Cedric: *gets murdered at the hands of the darkest wizard of all time*
Hey, something I don’t actually know about… in detail.. .for once yay 😁
Seems to me that originally, the tournament would have been more like the Renaissance versions of Medieval tournaments. Yes, they were "friendly", but horrible injuries and deaths did occur.
Personally I feel that, given that the cockatrice is a French wizarding symbol, at least at the time, Royalist (or Revolutionary) sabotage should not be ruled out, especially since 1792 is right in the middle of the most brutal years of the French Revolution (as the War of the First Coalition was declared just months before the tournament). I could see it either way, but which faction did it would depend on two factors:
1) The nationality of the contestant up when the rampage happened; the saboteur(s) would almost certainly be Revolutionary if the contestant up wasn't French (Revolutionaries felt everyone else was out for them outside of France back then, especially British, Austrians and Prussians, but also Spanish and Sardinians to a lesser extent)
2) If the contestant up at the time was French, then the allegiance of the contestant also needs to be considered; the saboteur(s) would be Royalist if the contestant was Revolutionary, and vice-versa.
And then Muggle-born may as well have brought Muggle conflicts in the wizarding world...
1:15 asked calmy

Ngl I was expecting all contestants to have died in horrific ways
I wonder if there were other competitions since that one..
I love how you said it like Beauxbatons, instead of Bobatton like in the movies.
My question is why would they plan the quidditch World Cup and the triwizard tournament in the same year
Another great video, thank you HP Theory! Hmm in 1792 the cockatrice and in 1994 another pure disaster. Maybe a Triwizard Gobstones Tournament would be better xDD
Dlc i would love to see in Hogwarts Legacy: -Triwizard Tournament -Quiddich School Cup - World Quiddich Cup - Chamber of Secret Related Mission - More Lore mission for dark magic related. Maybe Something doing with the creators of the curses would be fucking great.
What if the real reason (or an additional reason) was that the foundation of the first French Republic in 1792 led to the newly established government threatening Beauxbatons and/or the wider French wizarding world with being revealed (perhaps as secret monarchists) forcing them, and the Tri-Wizard tournament, underground until the relative security of the 1990’s made them comfortable with competing again?
Remember everyone, if you ever wondered if someone put their names in the goblet of fire, please ask calmly ok?
"Yea, okay. Last tournament didn't end good. But i worked hard to ensure that no one will die from cockatrice this time.
...
...
Anyway, i brought some dragons-"
I sometimes wonder if the International Confederation of Wizards have their own version of the Olympics. Besides the Quiddich World Cup and Tri Wizard Tournament, there doesn't seem to be any other sports competitions between the different nations of the Wizarding World. That's probably something J.K. Rowling should consider expanding on.
There are goobbals (?) and wizzarding chess, though not exactly sports, both I am certain have an international competition. Then there is dueling, which I would call a sport.
There might be other wizzarding sports too, that just isn't popular in the UK.
We have also to consider that the wizzarding population is much lower than the muggle population, and thus there are not as much of a room for that many different sports. You need a certain amount of talents to be able to make a team, and you need several teams to hold a competition. I already don't see how there are enough wizards or witches in UK for one national quidditch league, judging by the amount of Hogwarts students. Maybe if they had longer professional careers than muggle athletes, but there still wouldn't be enough people to also have other big sports.
We definitely need to see another chosen one taking place in another wizarding school maybe ivermony
"Dumbledore asked calmly"
Do you think it’s possible that Voldemort’s followers used the Imperius curse to manipulate the ministry officials into starting the tournament again?
1:15 Did you put your name in the Goblet of Fire?
one thing I never understood about "the plan" was... if they could use Portkey to teleport Harry out of the school... why do through all the trouble to make him win the tournament. Why not just enchant his pillow or something like that so he would teleport away once he touches it?
Or just enchant the snitch and make sure that it's Harry that win the game?
Love this

You can't say Cedric died from the tournament. If things had gone as planned they would have been teleported to the beginning of the maze. He didn't appear in the book or movie to be hurt significantly enough that he was on the verge of death.
True!
"The next time we'll let them search a discount wand with a note containing the clue in a cave labyrinth full of death traps and dozens of basilisks. Oh and we can put a force field around the cave and release some convicts from Askaban especially those death eaters in there to make it a bit more challenging!"
"But what about the safety?"
"NO MORTAL DANGER!"
The tournament did not take Cedric Diggory. It was Voldermort that did that. It like someone saying that someone died of Cancer when they actually died in a Car crash. The Cancer did not kill them and they could have survived and lived a long life afterward. We don't know but the Car Crash killed them. So, someone saying the tournament killed Cedric. Just think if Voldermort plan did not happen then Cedric would have won without dying just like Krum and Fleur would have not had the issues either. So, the tournament cannot be blamed for his death.
