    • @charlottehardman3669
      @charlottehardman3669 5 лет назад +37

      I think they are, because they’re only handling the clothes. In order to release a house elf, you have to specifically present the clothes to them, which Malfoy does when he specifically hands Dobby the diary. If they’re just touching clothes that aren’t being presented to them though, than that is not grounds for release

    • @sanghelian
      @sanghelian 4 года назад +19

      You dont need to give them the clothes, you can order them to do laundry, and let them figure out where the dirty clothes are.

    • @ImALefty08
      @ImALefty08 4 года назад +17

      Charlotte Hardman Not really. Remember when Hermione tried placing garments everywhere in the Griffindor common room in order to get any unsuspecting house elf to be set free? No house eleves ever wanted to go there anymore. This means that you dont have to actually physically give them the clothes to set them free. Unless the house eleves somehow could “sense” Hermione’s intention through these garments hence why they didn’t dare touch them? Idk

    • @timthorson52
      @timthorson52 4 года назад +10

      @@ImALefty08 the house elves likely have both rules and zuperstitious feelings. The rules would allow then to be given clothes by students, because the students aren't allowed to free them, but they know the intention and dont want to do something that could be misconstrued to give them freedom.
      You can most likely give a elf clothing with the explicit instruction that it is laundry. Dobby likely took the rule literally when he interpreted that as being presented him with clothing. That's also why dobby wore the sock, to show he interpreted it as something for him to wear.

      I'm sure given that the potion he used was dark magic, it had to be forcibly taken from Harry, as in when he was a hostage or captive or something. Otherwise, the Weasly twins wouldn't have bothered trying to fool the Age Line.

    I like the idea that the consequence for breaking the Cup's contract was that the wizard would have their magic removed. This means it's incredibly dangerous for Harry to not compete - Albus wouldn't believe a Muggle could defeat Voldemort, and the Ministry would force him to compete too, since Harry's a celebrity in the magical world.
    Voldemort wants Harry to win (hence why Barty is so helpful) so that he can prove that he wasn't just defeated by an ordinary child.

    I'm actually more concerned by the fact that Harry did ABSOLUTELY NOTHING, and yet somehow is part of a binding magical contract! Surely there's a way to prove that the contract doesn't count since HE HIMSELF did not sign his name. Perhaps using, I don't know, magic?! And if not, then Why didn't Dumbledore put Voldemort's name in the cup, thereby forcing him out of hiding. Or maybe that's a bold plan, but surely SOMEONE would use this to commit some kind of murder other than just voldemort?

      The Goblet was put under a very powerful Confundus Charm, according to Moody/Crouch Jr. This charm could have, and probably did, trick the Goblet into thinking that Harry had added his name in himself, taking care of the Goblet. Second, Barty Crouch Jr could have potentially swiped a piece of parchment on which Harry had written his name (He was disguised as a professor at the time, and he was known to wander the halls at night, and he DID add Harrys name to the Goblet), so if there was a way to check who wrote his name on the paper, it would still point back to Harry.
      This obviously wouldn't work with Voldemort unless you happen to find a piece of paper with his name written on it that he wrote AND you trick the Goblet into thinking it was Voldemort that added his name into the Goblet AND since he already kind of technically, but not fully, "died" by this point, he may not even be compelled at all, as he, for all intensive purposes, isn't alive anyway.
      The Goblet is also not just brought out for any regular occasion as well, meaning that it's misuse is pretty minimal at best.

    • @Techhunter_Talon
      @Techhunter_Talon 7 лет назад +41

      One answer is that is how J. K. Rowling wrote it, but the other that makes sense within the universe the books take place in is that Voldemort was simply obsessive as all hell with Harry and the prophecy surrounding him (and likely anyone else that fits the prophecy's criteria if he ended up branding them instead of Harry as his 'equal'). I'd definitely say to the point that he himself wanted to be the one to kill Harry. He didn't want it to be any other way than by his own hand. It's why he even wanted Harry's blood to restore himself. He wanted it so that he could actually harm Harry with what ever he personally had at his disposal for magic.
      In short, he's an obsessive nutcase with vast magical knowledge and prowess. Nothing more, nothing less.

      Day 1 of Defense Against the Dark Arts.
      FAKE MOODY: Harry, would you pass me that paperclip?
      *skip to chapter 32: the graveyard, minus Cedric dying*
      Moral: Don't hire Voldemort OR Barty Crouch Jr. to plan your wedding.

    • @SeraphimCramer

      The idea was that Harry would simply show up dead in the maze & everyone would just assume that he'd died in the course of the tournament, thus keeping Voldemort's return secret. However, I still don't see why someone couldn't have just pricked Harry's finger while he was sleeping or something.

As the Triwizard Cup was a portkey and it was meant to take the winner from the middle of the maze to the podium. Therefor Dumbledore had to have been the one to turn it into a portkey. Barty junior just.... hijacked it and added a destination. It wasn't a return portkey it just used up its last destination.

The only other candidate would have been dumbledore... and good luck with that one, voldy.

      Annabeth Granger : Indeed. Once you get someone outside the wards of Hogwarts, you can use any old thing as a Portkey, and Harry's so naïve that he'll touch anything you give him.
      ‘Harry was wondering exactly how they'd get there when Professor Quirrell said "Catch!" and threw a bronze Knut at him, and Harry caught it without thinking. A giant intangible hook caught at Harry's abdomen and yanked him back, hard, only without any sense of acceleration, and an instant later Harry was standing in the middle of Diagon Alley.’
      (From the fanfic Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality. Granted, that's a first-year AU Harry, but 4th-year canon!Harry would have fallen for it just as easily.)

      What you describe is a reflex-thing. Pretty much everyone would "fall" for it. Also book-Harry is quite a bit smarter than "movie-Harry".
      In book4 when he discovers the pensieve it first thinks of touching the silvery-substance inside but then decides to not do so because he knows that touching everything in the wizarding world is dangerous. So its pretty clear at that point that he would touch something "magical" if he has time to think about his action beforehand.

    • @Jotari
      @Jotari 7 лет назад +4

      The best explanation for why Crouch doesn't just throw any random portkey at Harry at any point throughout the year is that creating them undetected from the Ministry isn't feasible. They reference this in the next book when Dumbledore portkeys them out of his office. The cup was always intended to be a portkey anyway so Fake!Moody got the rights to create one, he just modified the spell under the radar of the ministry to send it on a little detour before making it's way back to the outside of the maze.
      Now that satisfactory explanation still doesn't explain why Crouch didn't apparate Harry out of Hogsmeade or simply just steal a pint of blood at any point throughout the year.

    I think the Goblet compels you to try your best. It's a very strong magic, you have no choice of backing out or slacking off. So either you win or you die trying to win. Fleur must be a powerful witch to be able to resist it and give up.
    Like in the scene when both Cedric and Harry are running towards the cup they kind of push each other to get ahead which is very against their nature.
    And Harry who himself said he doesn't want glory ends up contemplating between seeking the cup ie eternal glory vs saving his friend.

    As for Snape letting Draco fail twice before interfering, I have a theory: the first two attempts weren't part of the plan, they were Draco's own ideas.
    The plan was always the repairing of the Vanishing Cabinet, to sneak Bellatrix Lestrange & co. into Hogwarts, and witness Draco's murder (or failure at it) of Dumbledore.
    Draco, however, feared he would fail at killing Dumbledore in cold blood in front of Voldemort's most loyal followers. So, he came up with ideas so that he wouldn't have to get there. The only way for that was to make Dumbledore dead before the Cabinet is fully repaired. So, he tried twice, and only had to get up at the tower because both tries failed. As the plan for the tower was still about to unfold, the first two attempts didn't force Snape to interfere, as as long as he still kills Dumbledore in the tower, the vow is fulfilled. He also didn't want to help Draco because he also needed to kill Dumbledore in front of the witnesses. Otherwise he, knowing about the plan, would have come up with something, but if Dumbledore dies before Bellatrix and the others can witness it, his plan to prove himself fails.

      Actually, I think the reason the Goblet picked two people from Hogwarts is because Barty Crouch jr. put Harry’s name under a fake school. The goblet didn’t know Harry was another Hogwarts student. Barty also probably used some form of dark magic to trick the goblet into accepting Harry’s name, altering the contract so Harry didn’t need to be the one who put his name in.

    • @ferretrunner09

      Harry didn’t put it in himself, though. He didn’t enter the contract. If I buy a car and sign your name on the loan, you’re not responsible for the loan. You didn’t sign the contract.
      Harry didn’t sign the contract because he didn’t enter himself. Barty Crouch Jr entered him- without his permission.
      Identity theft. Yet, Harry is held to a contract he never entered into.

    The reason Voldemort brought Harry to him rather than just have him killed during the Tournament was because he desired to kill Harry directly. It would have proved that he could defeat the child who had nearly killed him before. Not only would that have bolstered morale among Voldemort's followers, but may have had a magical influence as well.
    Also, Harry didn't have to compete: the teachers could have worked some magic to break the contract. That is what Prof McGonnagall advocated. But Prof Snape and Prof Dumbledore wanted to let Harry compete in order to use him as bait.

      Delaney Strandberg The job positions in the books are so limited! Most jobs I see in the books seem like only one person is needed to do them in all of the UK. How many wand makers do you need for the population of magical UK? Seems to be only one or maybe two if there's someone in Knockturn. Same goes for taxi service, the only job as a driver seems to be the Knight Bus, so maybe there's Stan and couple other other wizards/witches for his off hours, but that's it. In all of Hogwarts there are only, what, twelve or thirteen adults running the whole school plus part-time position of the school governors, that's it. Everything else is mostly shop clerks (eg any of the shops gone to for school supplies) and some skilled repair services (eg tailors). We mostly see people in food service, including the candy trolley hag on the train. Then there's curse breaking, the press/entertainment, magical animal management, and government bureaucracy, and the Aurors. There is the shape to society here, but...it doesn't look like there's a lot of space for people. There's not enough positions and varied types of jobs. I don't think everyone who goes to Hogwarts can expect to find a job anywhere. Who's hiring?

      All jobs a society would have are represented in there. Any job that exists pre-industrial age definitely exists in the Harry Potter universe. Why? Because they are entirely disconnected from it. Sure they'll trade over Muggle parents money to wizard money, but they don't even understand how they dress, to a degree that it is extremely insulting, especially since it isn't even all that confusing. But whatever. Point stands, all pre-industrial age jobs are available for sure.

    The fact that Harry was not the person who put his name in the goblet should have immediately made any contract null and void. Harry didn't put his name in so he didn't enter into a contract. But hey poor writing beats common sense

    6:00, with the help he got and kid skill as a wizard, they seemed assured in his survival, until Voldemort got his chance to kill him. Sure it was risky but the tournament was also a way to disguise their plans for harry. They couldn’t have just tried abducting Harry or else his allies found find out quickly, and the peril that Harry was already going through in the tasks served as a distraction to hide the true motives of Harry even being put in the tournament. Everyone including Harry was focused more on him surviving the tasks than what was going on in the shadows.
    Also thinking back on the final task, with how Cedric attempted to attack a bewitched Krum and then struggled with harry as they were racing to the cup and how harry almost didnt help Cedric makes it seem plausible that the contract, or at the very least, the maze, is able to influence the actions and behavior of its participants, like a playable chapter in a video game, controlled by a script of the games progression system.

      But here's the thing, this NEEDS an explanation. The only reason why this plan even works is the fact that Harry is forced to compete yet we don't have any indication of why other than magical contract. It could have easily been fixed by just having everyone tell Harry he can choose not to compete if he doesn't want to, he says he wants to, and despite Dumbledore's protest, by the rules of the Triwizard Tournament, there's nothing he can do to stop him. Simple and gives interesting development for Harry moving forward since he would technically be to blame for Voldemort's rebirth.

    I always assumed (from book snippets, interviews and possibly a little too much fanfiction) that:
    1 - The Goblet was tricked - not easily, with a very complex spell - to accept a new school and that Harry was its sole student - I think it was a strong Confundus charm but I can't remember exactly. To be honest, it seems perfectly reasonable to me that schools could be added or removed from the competition (even if that implies a name change for the actual tournament) but that might require the cooperation of all Headmasters.
    2 - Fake Moody/Crouch Jr used his position as a teacher to steal Harry's name from his DADA homework - so technically, Harry did sign his name on a piece of parchment out of his own free will and that paper was then entered into the Goblet of Fire - so, I assume, the Goblet does not recognize intent or maybe it was just tricked again.
    3 - When they say magically binding contract, I always assumed the consequences for breaking it would be dire - death or losing one's magic (the latter would be a wizard's worst nightmare, I think, especially those of the old pureblood lines). I suppose Magic can be a little unforgiving in this world...
    4 - I have never considered what would happen if Harry hadn't actually tried to win, participating as little as possible (that is interesting!). I do think that Dumbledore was a proud man, confident in his own power and I think, for all that he liked Harry, that he was willing to use him as bait to find the dark wizard that had infiltrated his school. In his defense, he might've considered that Harry was safest at Hogwarts, surrounded by his teachers. I also think Dumbledore could've found a way around the contract if he really, really wanted but then the threat to Harry would still be present, hiding in the shadows (the tournament rules are more like guidelines few follow so I'm pretty sure Dumbledore could've helped Harry and made sure he was safe during each task - was he testing him? Preparing him for his prophesied showdown with Voldy? Who knows). We know why Harry participated in the first two tasks: he HAD to get the golden egg to get away from the dragon as quickly as possible and he will always try to save his friend. The third task... well, that one might've been his choice or a compulsion to keep moving forward placed within the maze. Or maybe Harry was just tired of being the spare champion and he really wanted to win. Perhaps, in good Harry fashion, it never even crossed his mind not to try.
    Okay... that turned out way longer than I expected.

      So Snape, a powerful wizard, would be on his side. Tom would never consider much of it, only thinking it it was a foolish sentiment that was worth having one of the world's greatest potion masters on his side.

    • @ramaboy10
      @ramaboy10 7 лет назад +18

      Voldemort never trusted anyone completely. He only trusted Snape in HBP when he killed Dumbledore. Voldemort worked alone. He had the death eaters but they were always second to him. He would never make a vow that would threaten his life with someone else, especially since snape wasn't that valuable to him at the time.

    • @maris5951
      @maris5951 7 лет назад +8

      Que The Sparkle imho it is the dumbest theory ever and goes against all the lore from the books. I will admit to being a book purist and I really loved the books while feeling rather bland about the movies and again imho this is why reading the books is much more informative than just watching the movies. the reason why SCB make sound theories and are able to analyze them so well is that they have read and reread the books.

    I am pretty sure the spells are not bound to real life physical activities, but rather mental states.
    It's like a lie detector, if it detects you think you have failed the details of the contract, it activates.

  • @emmasheehan7923
    @emmasheehan7923 4 года назад +1

    Usually contracts have to be signed by the person entering them, he shouldn't have been required to compete if he didn't write his name on the parchment that was submitted. Moody could have taken it from some homework, I don't think they specify whose writing it is, but if Moody just wrote his name and put it in, then Harry shouldn't have been entered.
