The info presented here is fundamentally correct...strictly for British wizarding society. Becoming an animagus is part of the curriculum in Ouagadou for instance (the Hogwarts equivalent on the African continent), and if what little information we have about them is anything to go by, the region in which you live apparently also influences your animal form to an extent, making lion, cheetah, elephant, giraffe, crocodile or hyena animagi much, much more commonplace in the various African nations than, say, finding red squirrels or house cats there.
So, basically, "only seven animagi this century" comes with the caveats "in Britain" and "that registered". And, honestly, I appreciate this cultural difference, same as how wandless magic is a basic, expected ability for Ouagadou students (and other cultures), but is a show of advanced skill and ability for European wizards.

You can't choose what you become, so for most people it will be very useless. Imagine Luna becomming an otter or something.
If it's for stealth and you are Dumbledore or Voldemort why would you need to hide at the hight of your power. Or just use a invisibility spell. Albus actually mentioned that it's much more convenient for a powerful wizard than a cloak or spending a year to become some random animal.
If it's for the animals abilities, then there's specialists spells or tools that are much more convenient, for example, brooms for flying or just teleporting, the water grass for underwater breathing, or incapacitate spells for werewolves instead of fighting in paw to paw combat.
So if you are a busy magical genius why would you waste your time on a party trick when you could learn or develop much more useful skills with the limited time you have.

What if they figured out the fact that mandrake leaves interfere with the process in some way, delaying it and preventing the process from completing as quickly? What if the potion that is created at the end is just a counter to the chemicals in the mandrake leaf, neutralizing it's effects in the body and allowing the first transformation? What if they were terrified of everyone being able to perfectly disguise themselves as animals, so they invented an elaborate process which prevented wizards who would otherwise have gone through with it from even attempting it? What if all the stories about danger were just ministry propoganda designed to scare people off?

I've been wondering this.....perhaps another video. Where did Molly's clock come from? Who made it? Why doesn't Dumbledore, who admired it, have one like it?
My thoughts.....Molly is a much more powerful and creative witch than we are led to believe at first. After all, she's the one who beat Bellatrix.
I think Molly was a very powerful witch, who simply chose to be a "domestic goddess", as she so loved Arthur. I think she created the clock herself
to keep with her family and make sure they are safe. Think about it....most of her children are also quite powerful in their own ways...especially Ginny.

If you take Hogwarts Legacy as canon (and I do) there's also Natsai Onai and her father, who could transform into a gazelle and a giraffe respectively. To me, this raises the question of whether your location in the world and exposure to certain animal species affects the pool of potential forms you might be able to transform into. The Marauders transformed into a stag, a rat and a dog, all things common to England and Europe as a whole. Skeeter could transform into a blue beetle, likely the blue mint beetle native to the UK (though there's also a blue milkweed beetle native to the US and Canada). The Onais were from Matabeleland, a region of Zimbabwe, and transformed into animals native to the African savannah. Perhaps this isn't coincidence.

That giraffe one I think brings up another potential danger to becoming an animagus... the location in which you choose to do it. Too small a space and you might get crushed or disfigured transforming into a large animal. Or just get claustrophobic, causing a fear response that cascades into the problems associated with that. Too open and you might get snagged by a predator if you transform into a small animal. Coupled with the recommendation that you should avoid doing this where others can see you, there's not a lot of options where it would even be safe to preform the first transformation.

Voldemort and Dumbledore could both be Animuguses and simply never revealed it, thats true... But I think not, I think simply that, at their level there simply wouldn't be an advantage to it.
The advantages as I see it, to normal wizards and witches would be these 4 things.
    1. The ability to hide/disappear from the ministry or others (Wormtail & Sirius does this)
    2. The ability to spy (If animagus is something small like a bug)
    3. The abillity to fly (if animagus is aerial)
    4. The ability to fight (if animagus is powerful like fx a dragon or some other powerful creature)
Dumbledore says in the books, that he doesnt need a cloak to be invisible, which makes 1& 2 useless for him
Voldemort can fly as he does so in both book and movie, which takes care of 3
And it stands to reason that, if one can do something the other can aswell
And both of them are more powerful with their wands than even a dragon, so turning in to a dragon would only weaken their fighting ability.

That would have to be mixed with dew that hadn’t seen sunlight or touched by human feet, along with the chrysalis of a specific moth.

Possibly no one could transform into a magical animal like a Unicorn or Phoenix because it wasn't possible. Certainly elves had their own magic as do goblins, so maybe it would not be possible to transform into an immortal Phoenix for instance?

JK very quickly scribbled over her notes regarding the Sorting Hat choosing your house based on your inherit traits at 11 years old but I’d like to see a justification as to why your animagus form can’t change as you grow or something.
The wizarding world is just filled to the brim with a weird ideology that some people are just born bad, and should be feared and excluded because of it .
Like if one of my friends animagus form was a leech or something seemingly undesirable I’d definitely be giving some hard side eyes.

Because it grows with you, apparently. As your human self matures and grows up, so does your animagus self, your animal form.

Slughorn transfigured into a comfy arm chair, but was not an animagus. So we can assume that any person can go into an inanimate object, but animal maybe a step too far for some or is more complex in terms of time and effort.

the thought of Harry's paternal grandparents and their home popped into my head as I'm watching order of the phoenix. I mean is there any info on what happened to the house where Sirius went after he left his parents' house. Is it still in the Potter family? Who owns it if Harry doesn't?

how difficult was it for Barty Crouch Jr ( disguised as Moody ) to do the weasel thing to Draco ? I take it it is much more difficult to change ones own form than to do it to another person but I thought "weasel juggling " was most impressive

Crouch Jr. is rediculously powerful (especially given his young age and then Azkaban/cellar imprisonment) generally.
So he could be able to transform someone else, without killing them, which prolly is the acrual feat here, which not too many other can do.

Personal theory. We haven’t seen dumbeldores patronous. But he has. Perhaps it was the animal shown in fantastic beasts with the ability to see the future. Something I doubt he would have wanted given his inquisitive nature.

  • @alexsolomon8127

i suspect because being able to get things balanced to the point you can change back and forth at will is actually very, VERY difficult. Nagini from the sequal trilogy might be one outcome of a botched Animagus attempt.(she was doomed to one day be unable to turn back into human) Werewolves were likely another. The books mention in a few places that Peter Pettigrew spent a little too much time as a rat when posing as Scabbers and he never quite lost the ratlike qualities after that. I suspect self-transformation is VERY dangerous..because what happens if/when you change the bits that allow you to be a Wizard in the first place? has anyone ever seen a transformed witch or wizard cast spells while in animal form, for instance? we know that it's POSSIBLE to do it without words or gestures...just really difficult. Wands and the rest are foci....concentration aids. James Potter and his freinds were being INCREDIBLY reckless when they made thier attempt..which, from all indications in the book, was right along with thier personalities....it got Sirius killed in the end.

  • @tommoore2012

I’d give becoming an animagus a shot. One thing I would to make sure I followed all steps correctly is rewrite them in my own words. Reading something that I wrote myself makes it far easier to comprehend than if I was reading someone else’s writing. Also I would leave my phial in a place on Earth where lightning storms are the most prominent. Pottermore says my patronus is a white stallion and sure that’s pretty cool, but if my animal form is different I’m hoping it would be a: bengal tiger, falcon, dragon, dog, or a Great White shark if I were to become a sea creature.
