The Most EVIL Witch Nobody Talks About - Harry Potter Explained

  • Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. While there are likely many WIZARDS that come to mind when you think of Harry Potter and EVIL - Gellert Grindelwald and Lord Voldemort to name a few - the title of most evil WITCH may not be quite so obvious. So, in this video, we’re going to be discussing why I believe that the most evil witch in the Harry Potter universe is...
Now, I know what you may be thinking. WHO in Merlin’s Beard is Gormlaith Gaunt?! Wouldn’t Bellatrix Lestrange be the obvious choice for most evil witch? How could a witch who many may not have even heard of deserve the title of the MOST evil witch? Could she possibly be MORE evil than Bellatrix, the literal mistress of Evil Reincarnate? (More on that in just a second.)
Well, of course, Bellatrix was a truly evil b- er, witch. She performed some incredibly cruel and heinous acts of magic - and non-magic, for that matter - in the name of being one of Lord Voldemort’s Death Eaters. In fact, the rumour is that Bellatrix was so devout to Voldemort and the Dark Arts that she actually fell IN LOVE and was intimate with the Dark Lord himself, producing a daughter named Delphi - taking the vows of a Death Eater quite above and beyond, if you ask me…But anyway, in addition to her ABSOLUTE loyalty to Voldemort, Bellatrix was also involved in some of the most disturbing acts of Dark Magic described throughout Harry Potter. For example, she took part in the torture of Aurors, Frank and Alice Longbottom, an act which drove them both mad and permanently landed them in St. Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries for the remainder of their lives. She also committed many a murder, including that of beloved House Elf, Dobby, her own cousin, Sirius Black, and her niece, Nymphadora Tonks - and she did all this in the name of pure-blood supremacy and the Dark Lord’s vision of the wizarding world. So, yes, of course, it’s true - Bellatrix Lestrange was a monstrously evil witch.
But, hundreds of years before there was Bellatrix Lestrange, there was an Irish witch by the name of Gormlaith Gaunt, whose acts of unspeakable evil rival Ms. Lestrange’s to the point in which I must admit that, in my opinion, she was indeed the more evil of the two.

I don't get what's special about it? What good does it serve to talk to serpentine creatures? They are not the strongest or most dangerous beasts in the Potterverse. Is it magical? Could a parselmouth control Nagini? Why didn't Nagini need to be spoken to in paseltongue? I just don't see why it was ever included at all....

A note about Slytherin's lineage...because of the incomplete records of the time, isn't it likely, with all the pureblood families being inter-related, that most magical families carry traces of Slytherin's genes? Sure, the snake talk was probably lost over time, but with the habit of prioritizing the family name through the lines of the _sons,_ they tend to forget about the _daughters,_ except when one was of age to marry a cousin. If there was no cousin available, she probably married into some other pureblood family. It would only be with the constant cousin marriage that the snake talk stayed in the family's line, and their near constant refusal to marry any but a close relative to ensure pure-blooded stature, but they'd forget about those other daughters early on. There's probably traces of Slytherin genetics all over the place, especially if you include the idea that not every witch or wizard is going to remain faithful before or after marriage.

    • @MrJoueurdusalon
      @MrJoueurdusalon Год назад +17

The fact of getting married only with cousins greatly restrains the parseltongue as much as one can imagine that given their desire to keep their pure blood they are even ready to make marriage between brother and sister.
Some who have this gene but are nice may choose not to have children so as not to pass it on.
But in any case if you are a descendant of Salazar you will necessarily be a parseltongue.

After I learned that attendance at Hogwards was not compulsory, then I pictured some poor muggleborn kid being denied the chance to learn magic because their parents said no and send him to the Muggle world instead, and if he's lucky, he gets rich snakebreeding or doing snake performances, but not able to tell people he can literally talk to snakes.

@@mathewkanapilly796 which once again shows how overdue a TV series or another movie series is about Merlin, Morgana and the four Founders of Hogwarts. See more of their motives (especially Salazar), their relationships, their background and what kind of Wizards and Witches they were. It would be an opportunity to fill up some plotholes and grant more insight into the world and a deeper look into the past.
Stuff I never understood like Slytherin wants Pure-Bloods but accepts Half-Bloods? Merlin, Snape and even Voldemort himself were Half-Bloods which kinda goes against Slytherins values. When a Half-Blood has one magical and one muggle parent, aren't they if we follow that logic theoretically worth less than the offspring of a Pure-Blood that married a Muggle-Born? I mean it has two magical parents instead of one afterall. Wouldn't that make Muggle-Born Witches and Wizards a better Partner for Pure/Half Bloods? Better than a normal Muggle of course. And you would produce something more than a Half-Blood - you technically have a 3/4 Blood then?
Also If a pure blood Wizard marries a muggle-born Wizard is the pure blood worth less in the eyes of the supremacists? But muggleborns are still Wizards? And they accept Half-Bloods? Would their offspring be "wizardy" enough to be elected a Slytherin (or for that matter even a Death Eater), if a mudblood is a parent? It theoretically should. If we go after what we know it should be more frowned upon to marry a Muggle than a Muggle-Born Witch or Wizard. A Halfblood is theoretically less of a Wizard than the offspring of a Pure-Blood and a Mud-Blood but somehow Muggle-Borns are the most hated Wizardkind of the Purists. They should think very little of Half-Bloods as well - I mean the superior Wizard decided to mix their pure magical blood with Muggle-Blood and therefore forever made his bloodline "muddy".
Those are things that need clarification because the more you think about it the less sense it makes. The whole Basilisk situation is also something that isn't clarified enough imo. Also it seems kinda stupid and extra for Slytherin to do that. If it attacks Muggle-Borns and not Half-Bloods, how does it know? It should theoretically smell the proportion of Muggle-Blood. Which would mean that the Basilisk is more of a protection against Muggles instead of a weapon against some students. Which would make sense given that Salazars hatred was against Muggles for persecution of Wizard-Folk for centuries and not specifically against Muggle-Borns. I understand that Salazar wouldn't trust them at all because they are between the worlds and could betray the Wizarding World but anyway I think the Basilisk is more of a protection against Muggle-Invasions instead of a hitman for Muggle-Born students.
They definetly have enough material to go into the story of the founders. And a lot of things need to be clarified so we don't depend too much on fanfiction and headcanon because we lack information.

Yes I believe it's even mentioned that the only reason the Malfoys weren't super inbred was because they tended to be involved in muggle politics and so occasionally married half bloods to keep things fresh, though Lucius and Narcissa were cousins since the Malfoys were mentioned to have married into the black family at least twice in recent generations. Sirius in order of the Phoenix mentions how his family the Blacks practiced inbreeding as well since they were such blood purists, and he suspected that likely contributed to their notorious madness. It's very likely most of the sacred 28 are inbred at least those that were against marrying muggles or half bloods. Draco kinda rebelled though with his marriage since while he married Astoria Greengrass who was a pure blood and from a noble house his parents didn't approve because she wasn't from the sacred 28.

When you consider how Gormlaith was easily struct down by a poisoned arrow to the heart. It makes me wonder why nobody from the Ministry, Hogwarts or allies of Harry didn't think to hire a sharpshooter with a military grade sniper rifle to take Voldemort out? We know that the Death Eaters would never resort to employing muggles for their own purposes, but for anyone who is muggle-born, who have watched military or police themed action films and TV, they should have considered recruiting a muggle that is special forces who could one shot Voldemort from a distance. As far as we know for all his dark magic and power, Voldemort isn't immune to taking a bullet to the head. Like Gormlaith his body can die, and even if he gets revived again, so long as he gets taken out even just momentarily then the Death Eaters would lose their will to fight, giving the good guys an big advantage.

Wizards look down on killing, which is why the killing curse is unforgivable, and why Voldemort was so feared. Using the killing curse causes irreparable damage to the soul, and Voldemort handed it out like candy. Couple that with the fact he had seven horcruxes, Voldemort wasn't just a person, he was basically a lich. He was an eternal evil with such a terrifying legacy of murder and torture that most wizards were terrified of even saying his name. They didn't use muggle weapons because, one, it would martyr Voldemort to the pureblood supremacists, and muggle weapons are vastly inferior to magic. A wand can cause explosions, freeze people in place, transfigure guns into harmless animals, and even create magical shields.

Since he can’t die and his Horcrux was unknown and never recovered, he would systematically go from place to place after a temporary period of time, so no-one would get suspicious of his longevity and lack of expected aging.

Dolores Umbridge is much more evil.
She wouldn't have hesitated to do any of things Gorna did and would have actually enjoyed it.
Dolores was the only death eater who could use the Patronus charm because she actually enjoyed torturing people, children included.
You need to be able to produce a memory of sheer joy and happiness to be able to cast a Patronus and to be able to hold that memory at the forefront of your mind to be able to make it full formed. In DnD terms it's a concentration spell, not a cantrip with an immediate effect.
Dolores can produce a fully formed cat Patronus because she relishes the pain and suffering she's inflicting on others.
At least with Bellatrix her evilness stemmed from insanity mixed with twisted beliefs and Gorna seems to follow that pattern.
    Dolores is on another level.

Wait is this canon? When was it explained that she can cast a patronus because of that? Also Snape was also a death eater. I don't think it is even completely canon that death eaters are not able to cast a patronus. As far as I know that is just a saying/prejudice in the wizarding world but wasn't scientifically studied. Maybe they can't cast a patronus because most of them have never tried? Or because people who become death eaters are maybe more likely have mental health issues or experienced an abusive childhood.Draco for example was loved by his parents but also emotionally abused by his parents his whole life. The patronus charm is not taught at Hogwarts. So how many people would even have tried learning it in their life? It's not like most people in real life just study an advanced subject they'll probably never need like the chemistry of Organosilicon elements when they are out of school for fun.

Yes Umbridge wasn't as evil as Bellatrix or Gormlaith, but you did overlook her. All those "Educational decrees" they are quiet evil.
One less known evil witch: Skeeter, she spied as an insect and didn't care about the impact on Hagrid's life once his secret of being a half giant is out. All she cared about was herself and made it a matter of Ego, once Hermione showed her the true face.
Horrible woman Rita Skeeter, although not as wicked as the previous ones.

    • @angelaharris53
      @angelaharris53 Год назад +1

I don't know. I actually tend to think of Umbridge's evil as the worst sort. Bellatrix and Gormlaith never, ever pretended to be anything other dark hearted evil and they reveled in that. Umbridge was "just following orders" and didn't care at all where they came from; in her mind every action she took was perfectly justified and she allowed her nastiest impulses to run wild under the umbrella of that sanction. That sort of evil is the worst because it will never recognize itself.

    • @TheSdzfr
      @TheSdzfr Год назад

@@angelaharris53 You know she was able to cast a Patronus charm.
Yes you're right, "I am right" is the worst sort of problem.
But I guess, Bellatrix also thought: I am doing nothing evil. I have all the rights to kill my niece because she's a mud-blood's daughter.
She is the same as Umbridge.
Bellatrix and Gormlaith felt no guilt just like Umbridge. Didn't recognize the consequences of their actions. Hell! she was sitting like a queen when she was questioned by Crouche. She did nothing wrong in her head when she tortured the Longbottoms.
So every evil Witch is noble in her own head.
So Umbridge isn't an exception, she is the rule.
Skeeter too, although she's not as Evil, but she did nothing wrong in her head when she painted Hermione as a golddigger, was about to destroy Bagman. and when she wrote Dumbledore's life as a lie.
She thought she's doing all things good, but actually she was a Gossiping Corrupt woman. And every Agony aunt thinks, she's a good gentle lady.

While Gormlaith was certainly a horrible woman, her impact on the Wizarding world was rather limited. Her evil deeds mostly influenced a small area around a secluded valley and her own family. What makes her more evil than Bellatrix is likely that she did all this of her own accord while Bellatrix would have likely been just a very unpleasant person if it hadn‘t been for ol‘ Tommy to elevate and educate her.
However, I think there are some possible evil witches left. As Rowling obviously included most famous witches and wizards from legend (while of course especially concentrating on British folklore, one could assume that ALL important magic users, maybe including some characters depicted as demi-gods in legend) are all canon within the Wizarding World. That assumption opens the door for many very interesting figures, like Baba Jaga from (Eastern) Slavic folklore, Yamauba and Yuki Onna from Japanese legend, Kirke from Greek mythology,Ljot from Icelandic sagas or Mórrígan (or Mór-Ríoghain) from celtic/Irish folklore.
And one that actually is mentioned not only on Pottermore or other auxiliary texts by Rowling, but in the books themselves (and therefore without doubt canon): Morgan (alternative: Morgaine la Fée). I think that this references Morgan Le Fay from the Arthur legend (considering that Merlin is definitely mentioned). And she would be a very strong contender for most evil witch in history. Some people see Mórrígan as antetype for Morgan, making her an even stronger contender.
Plus, most of those legends date back to times far before even the foundation of Hogwarts. It is clear that pure-blood supremacy is well established around the year 1000 AD, as Hogwarts was founded around that time and the fallout between Godric, Rowena and Helga on the one and Salazar on the other side revolved around allowing every magically gifted person into the school - a mindset, therefore, that caused much of the evil actions performed by basically all evil characters within the books (and also Gormlaith). On the other hand, many of the older witches of folklore are just evil for the sake of evil. They often have some sort of agency, but reaching their goal will simply result in a new one, continuing the evil.
Plus, their impact on the Wizarding World (and the world at large) is huge, considering they lived so long ago, there is not much written evidence of their doings but they are still known today - in the Wizarding World as well as in Muggle legends.

It's better explained in the books. No one was supposed to know that they were moving harry from private drive 4 days before his birthday. The reason why death eaters knew was because Snape planted the idea in mundeogus fletcher's head to move harry early with 7 decoy Harry's. Snapr gave voldmort the correct date to keep his cover. He modified fletcher memory afterwards
Lupin was rough with harry because he thought he may have been a spy pretending to be harry. Sort of like Mad eye in the 4th book.
Also the question he asked him about the grindylow was not included in the third movie so it makes no since for him to ask it because move going audience's may not gave read the book.
This scene and Aberforth's mirror really both me about the deathy hallows film adaptation. They rely too much on knowing the book.

The only possible Witch that I can think of that may have been more evil was Morgan Le Fay !
[ Merlin is mentioned in Harry Potter so ... ]

If there is a witch worse than Gormlaith, it's probably another Gaunt.

    This was interesting 👍
Too bad JK Rowling or whoever came up with this didn't think to add, "And with Morgalith's last dying breath she laid a curse on Illvermorny that her soul would be forever within the school and one day she would purge it of all she considered unclean" but I guess that's a little too much like Salazar Slytherin.

I think it was inhumane to Keep the Long bottoms in a hospital for their entire lives. Especially knowing that their situation would never improve. A constant state of agony. The wizard world is fully Capable of granting them a peaceful deified ending.

When it comes to most evil witch I’d put Umbridge up among them.
