Thanks for documenting this. Amazing that Dr John shared so much history and truly authentic insights. No shinola on him ever! Love his realism and breaking things down and explaining the musical styles and feelings behind them. What a gem he was. Loved his music from the first time I heard him in early 1970s
This lesson from Dr. John is magical. I mean, when I feel depressed and low (and it sadly happens too often in this world), I watch and listen to this video. Dr. John is cool and natural here. It is so heartwarming to feel his music and the tributes he does. For myself, this is the music I love and this is the music that heals my heart. This is the best remedy! Thanks Dr. John and thanks Music Discipline for posting this jewel. :D
dr john speaking about his time with booker and then going into booker style playing was magical for a booker fan like me. I cant help but imagine how it was like to be in new orleans when dr john and booker were young
Being born and raised in New Orleans, I had the pleasure of seeing Dr. John and Booker many, many times, especially Booker at the Maple Leaf Bar. I feel so fortunate - it was one of the times I'll always cherish.
I grew up in south Texas, but thanks to my father’s love of music, we were listening to Dr. John, Professor Longhair, and Clifton Chenier to name a few, since we were babies. Grew up with Chuck Berry, Lynyrd Skynryd, GNR, Metallica, etc., but so grateful we were exposed to this music as well.
I Bought The DVD's I Want To Get The Newer Video Where He Teaches The New Orleans Style! I Love Ray Charles And Dr. John They're Me Hero's And I Have The Same Heroin Habit As Mac & Ray So Go Figure I'm A Junkie Just Like Mac Rebennack! We All Ball To The Wall! I learned a lot about piano playing, especially learning how to play New Orleans style music! Dr. John is a wonderful man I wish I could have heard him play live!
Mac's speaking voice was so hypnotic, soothing and alluring. Even sexy. Like his keys. And it's hard to think of too many other players who can make the piano sound steamy.
Dr John, one of the greats for sure..... the real hoodoo man. I love his playing, the real fuckin' deal. Did I mention creeps me out sometimes the deep voice, the cold stare, like he's channeling Professor Longhair ..pure genuis. RIP Mac.
Interesting you say that about the way he looked and spoke, because I find it weirdly compelling and warm and entrancing....that's probably more worrying!
This man’s hands are like a spider on speed. If I had another life it would be doing this, or playing like JLL like he did on that recording live at the star club. Moves the core of my soul!
I once missed meeting him by about two minutes apparently. I knew who he was, but not really back then. Had I known, I would’ve wigged out a lot more. This video should legit be in the library of congress, though. Try and get in touch with their archives
Happy like "can you break that down" implying he wanted a note by note tutorial and some technical explanation. and the Doctor just playing it a bit slower while changing the improv. and that's the point--either you can feel it and you want to try to play it or you don't.
I'm a professional pianist and I'm sure if I studied this video closely I could get all the notes down. But I still have NO IDEA how he makes that sound. Amazing.
You should try. These tunes are fun to play and you feel such a sense of accomplishment when u learn one.I learned this. ruclips.net/video/8USAA7WkJqs/видео.htmlsi=8-Y68OW-C1Hcgibp
Same guitar model sound so different depending of the guitar player, in piano is more dificult to find, a diferent sound in the same piano, but people like Dr John, McCoy Tyner, Keith Jarret or Thelonious Monk, to name few, they have original sound which is very dificult to get in the same instrument..
I love Dr John. As an old heroin addict myself, I can feel the high radiating off him to the point they I almost have cravings watching this but I love him and his music and I can attest to the fact that the stuff makes you want to play music, and it makes music touch you deeper and it makes your soul more open to what music does and when a person feels what they're playing it sounds better. They'll tell you"nobody plays better when they're high!" But saying it don't make it so lol

I never met him, but my guess is that Mac was actually a very shy person and that’s why he’s so withdrawn here. Scary to think that the piano was his second choice as an instrument. Who gets this good as a Plan B?
I guess I'm the only one who thinks Dr John was not much of an instructor. Fantastic player, just didn't really break down enough detail for "average" players to pick up.
This video is a national treasure.
I'd say it's world heritage.
Absolutely
It's universal!
Should be in the library of Congress.
There's not much I wouldn't give to be able to play like that! Doc's rhythm is something that is not of this world! Priceless! 🎹🎹🎹🎩👍
Man when this played, In my mind and my ears all I see and hear is water movin like a river with sparklin colors
"here's some wizardry. You're welcome."
nice lesson. Thanks, Doc!

Fantastic interior movement with the right hand. Throw in playing 10ths with the left and you have Dr John
Pure N.O rock'n'roll.

As a guitar player Dr. John was the first piano player that stopped me in my tracks and just sat and watched him play. Such a master of his craft. ❤
Dr. John played guitar first until he got shot in 1960.

The constant high-pitched noise is unbearable to my ear! I'm surprised i'm the only one to mention this.
Could be your ears, or your listening device’s speaker. Im wearing ear buds and have it up near full volume, only picking up a slight tape hiss.
Did you turn it off and then back on again ? If so, check the ground wire...
