He’s not slow. He’s a genius. He took his time and spoke the truth. Dr. John is one of the coolest cats to ever walk the Earth. And that was a great interview that left me with even more respect for him than l had before.
I had the pleasure and the privilege of spending time in the presence of this great man several times -- for a few interviews, for a few off-the-cuff conversations -- and those are among the most cherished and treasured experiences of my life. One of the hippest, wisest, wittiest, deepest, and big-hearted people one could ever hope to meet.
I'll never forget a job I did down in New Orleans. We were taking the day off to hang out in the French Quarter. We come to Bourbon St, and there was a bar that they were dragging a piano out of. All of a sudden, Dr. John walks out and plays a couple tunes on the street. Coolest shit I've ever seen
😁You were definitely in the right place at the right time 😍what a super awesome "New Orleans Memory Moment"!!! truly, Dr John lwas indeed one of the very best and definitely ze funky coolest New Orleanian boogie-woogie piano man .... A true gentlemen, a hell of a groove player, truth teller and man who respects and honors the greatness of black American music. (the lifeline to all popular music)
I miss Dr John he was one of my favorites to listen to in my childhood in the 60s and 70s. Truly an amazing time and Im glad to have grown up with him and all of the greatest in music
Dr. John was the epitome of living, breathing culture. There are countless musicians living today who embody the contemporary NOLA culture, but almost all of the musicians from Dr. John’s generation have passed on. Videos like these are priceless

Dr John is a true treasure and musical ambassador to New Orleans. I love everything about him. I was born and raised in New Orleans myself, although now I live in the midwest, I truly do know what it means to miss New Orleans. I prefer to pronounce it like the good Dr, New Awlin's. One of these days, I'm goin' back to the land of the Carnival Queen to stay. Yeah you right.

I'm gald they asked the guitar question, as I never knew he even played guitar. Just think that, if not for that unfortunate gunshot incident, he might never have focused on piano and became what he is today.
You can tell from the interview just how hurt and angry he is over the state of his city. It's good to see someone who could pick up and live anywhere, decide this is their home. Good Luck, Dr. John.
@@ajcarr1965 Mac quoted a New Orleans-based activist (I forget who it was) about the catastrophic events that occurred in the wake of Katrina (e.g., the flooding that resulted from the Army Corps of Engineers' long-time decimation of the wetlands) -- When he said this, that voice of his growled with pure, unadulterated fury: "That was no 'Act of God' -- that was premeditated murder." @@jazzmanchgo Great music. Thanks for the link. But I'll say the NOLA murder rate is more about crack cartels & California Marxists coming into the mix, than anything else. Before the 80s NOLA was one of the most laid back, safest cities in the US. After Katrina the real estate speculators came in to "rebuild" the city (ha. They bought & flipped.) & made it so expensive I couldn't go back if I tried; add in the poverty-pimping, race baiting violent Marxists who flooded in behind the speculators, & things have gotten ugly. It ain't Dr. John's Big Easy no mo.
I was born and raised (still living) in El Paso, TX and I love jazz. I have family in New Orleans myself and this was such an great Q&A with Dr. John! I've heard so much about him. That Southern accent is golden, an accent I'd die for lol. R.I.P. Dr. John!
Last month I discovered him while looking up lyrics for gilded splinters (Allman bros fan here), and I stumbled upon gris gris. I came to really appreciate his style, in that I don't think I've ever heard anything as unique in terms of storytelling than what's been produced by Dr. John. Truly inspiring. I can't believe he died; I never got to even see him in concert :,(.
Dr. John is the real deal.... true to his muse - and nothing short of a "monster" player... There is a reason the worlds best musicians want to play with him..
The late John Campbell credited Dr. John with getting him a record deal. Yet another jam session taking place in the Universe beyond this one... if your a Dr. John fan, you must aquire a copy of "Sentimental Mood" even if your not, no record collection can be complete without it! Along with John Campbell's "Howlin' Mercy" very different styles, but Mr. Campbell was out of Shreveport, LA and they had that connection. RIP Gentlemen
Much respect for this man and what he went through his whole career . He quit Dope , and many other drugs . Much respect !!!!! So what if he's stoned . I'd rather there be stoners then haters !!!!
A genius!...because he plays a style with simpler harmonies than modern jazz has, some people think it's a lower order of music. Wrong. His rhythms and complex patterns as sophisticated as Keith Jarrett or any drummer!
My first time ever to New Orleans, Mardi Gras time. Walked down Canal to the Mississippi and people were gathered for an out door concert. Sat and was welcomed by the locals who were singing Iko Iko for a good half hour until the Doctor came on. That was 1997-been going back every year since...usually in April (from Canada). Oh, Iko Iko is in my band reptoire now-the Doctor`s version.
Mac is such a cool raconteur - He should do some sort of recordings in a similar vein to Jelly Roll Morton's Library of Congress recordings. A mixture of interviews, anecdotes and piano from Mac would be great...
I remember being at a festival and out of all the sounds I heard this strange tune being played by a band at one of the stages. I filed that away somewhere and shortly afterward discovered that it was Right Place, Wrong Time by Mac Rebennack. Dr. John is one of the most underrated and talented performers to ever take the stage. He lives on
annajuliet didn't say it was right. Personally I didn't tell but I remember people doing it or bragging about who their celebrity sponsor was. Seems less heinous if the particular person is very open about being in the program and says so in media on a regular basis. So please no preachy - Kay?!
@james crowe Well -- to be fair, Mac was always up-front about being a recovering addict, and he spoke freely about his participation in AA and NA (I believe one of the amulets dangling from his walking stick was an NA pin of some kind), so in his case I guess "anonymity" was kind of beside the point.
I'd like to ask him how he lost all his extra weight (surgery?), and congrats on doing it. However, he still seems like he is in ill health in that video. Would hate to see how he is now (8 years later). Hopefully he will make a healthy comeback ..
Mac went through a lot of health issues during his life, but he hung on and stayed vital for a long time, especially given what he'd put his body through when he was younger. His life was a triumph.

Ernie K-Doe as well. I used to go to Mother-in-Laws, and I'm glad Kermit Ruffin has it now.
