- Dr John's distinctive brand of "voodoo" blues combining his inventive piano playing, gravelly voice and the pure essence of New Orleans has made him both a much admired and much loved character in a career that stretches over forty years.
Dr John has graced the Montreux stage on six occasions. He decided that this concert from 1995 was the one he most wanted to see released in our Live At Montreux series. It is an exceptional performance and includes classic tracks such as Iko Iko and Right Place, Wrong Time.

I always fantasized about Dr. John being my grandpa and sitting beside him on the piano bench as he played. R.I.P. Mac...you are deeply missed.
No one enjoys life more than musicians that make good music playing together or as a solo performer.
damn str8
That feeling you get when your band is really cooking is better than any drug out there!
Dr John was a legend. That whole band was great as well. I love Charlie Miller’s trumpet.
Dr. John swag unmatched to this very day
Dr. John put on one of the best concerts I've seen in my 50 plus years of concert going. From the start with the band showing off it's talent and chemistry, to the good Dr's strutting debonair walk to the stage through the crowd, the entire evening was about the music and having a celebration together. IMHO, he's one of the most funky players ever, and his absence will be felt deeply. R. I. P.
Best version of Iko I've ever heard; kick ass! And he lets all the horns solo.
Indeed!
Check out the one he does with Jeff Healy, David Sanborn, and the house band from NBC Sunday Night back in the 80s. Mavis Staples was on the same episode. It's epic
RIP, Dr. John........
I was 15 years old when I saw the most amazing performer in City Park NOLA .I PUSH my way to the front (Very hard)and was rewarded with the most incredible performance on this planet .GOD rest your soul. My Nawlins brother 🎹🎶🎹🎶🎹
Just spent Christmas in New Orleans...what an awesome place and experience. Now I get it!!! RIP Dr John....
And the light of the world has dimmed just a bit..God bless
Oh God, no. He'll be missed!
That first 1/2 minute when the other musicians and singers play in front of an empty big black grand piano, then here comes Dr. John out from backstage with his cane and tears the place up. WOW
Doesn’t get much cooler than that
The man passes but His music lives forever.
One of the greatest American songwriters of the last half century. I don't think he gets enough credit for that. RIP, good doctor.
Truly timeless music. I think much of the same could be said for Jerry Garcia and the Grateful Dead as well. There is just such a timelessness to their and Dr. John’s music as if it has just always existed.
Dr John was a monster! Love his style! RIP
A Sad sad loss, you brought much happiness to many. Thank you for that Malcolm John Rebennack Jr. - alias Dr. John.
And another American legend passes from the stage into the history books.
Laissez les bons temps rouler avec vous au ciel, Dr. John!
En totue
worked with him on the business side fr many years a wonderful caring individual
Rough time for New Orleans, first the Queen of Creole Cooking, now Dr. John. Two Louisiana legends gone within a week. RIP Leah Chase and Dr. John
With all of his various talents combined, his piano playing .just elevates everything. It just oozes style, technique and talent. And he really knows his jazz chords, not just boogie piano chords, I-IV, V stuff. He will be missed....he's right up there level with Ramsey Lewis and the rest of the jazz talents...[from a musician].RIP
You nailed it!

You're immortal, Doc!
I'm so glad I got a chance to see Dr John in person before he died. It was at the Charlotte Jazz Festival in 1993, and he brought the house down!

@@jojojo1452 is there a nicer way you could have said that honey.
Dr. John was the coolest of the cool. Had hundreds of songs. Hot rhythms&grooves. Followed him since the 60s. Never put out a bad record, why,? because he was "BAD"!!! Here at Montreaux he's with a first class musical machine, what he deserves! He walked on gilded splinters and showed the world his Nawlins roots. An American Treasure in heaven with Satch and all the other Legends!
Thank you for the joy and life you bring into our lives and ❤
I love Dr John
If this doesn't make you like jazz/funk fusion nothing will! Dr. John was a genius at the keys and singing both. He truly is the ambassador musician of New Orleans. His influences and reverence for the greats including Jelly Roll Morton and Louis Armstrong are profound to him as he said in an interview that was the most genuine I've ever seen. His "voodoo" blues are an amazing contribution to Jazz. I'm going to find out if there is a tribute band that covers Dr. John in New Orleans. It wouldn't be a trip there if there is one to see and take in. God bless you Mac in the heavens you are greatly missed but we know you are having a big party with all the greats that have left us before.
What a cool performance!! Awesome drummer!

This is so much better than that artist that has redone and rewrote it. If it ain't got New Orleans feel, I don't wanna hear it.

That swagger out on stage... The only person that comes close is Masayoshi Takanaka, but for different reasons.
🕯
I saw the Dead do this in Las Vegas and Irvine Medows
R.I.P. Mac😥
Count Basie would feature most of the musicians in each song.
This song reminds me so much of New Orleans that I can almost smell the piss.
If you don't find the answer in the imusic where do you find it
