I worked with many great musicians in my career and I appreciate all the comments this video receives. It was among my favorites in particular because of Mac and Rick Danko's performance. It never fails to get me moving.
I was lucky enough to have brought the complete concert on DVD. The good doctor here is in great form playing this classic with a stage full of legends. This band is really the best of all Ringo's all star bands.
The headdress is because the song is about Mardi Gras Indians, who are the opposite of minstrels. Their motto, "We won't bow down," is a shout of defiance against the forces arrayed against them.
...and look out for "Trombone Shorty" (Troy Andrews). Whew! He tore it up with Jeff Beck two years ago at NOLA Jazz Fest, and recently at Voodoo Fest NOLA with Foo Fighters. He's going to be playing withe the FOOs 4th of July in D.C.
+Roger Steinbrink Hey man if you like our music down here in the swamp check out the Neville Brothers and now their sons and nephews have a band called Dumpstaphunk, Kermit Ruffins, Trombone Shorty, Alan Toussian... they all gods down here new orleans royalty. Come down to our Sweet Ole' Crescent City anytime! NOLA Till I Die!!!!!
Thanks for the invite. I live on Bayou St. John. Sad day when Allen passed away the other day. He will be greatly missed. Not only an incredible musician, but a true Gentleman.
+Roger Steinbrink Bayou st john is beautiful man! I live in the cbd now i grew up out in the 3rd ward in Lakeview. Yea he was! I had the pleasure if meeting Alan one night when he played with Mac (dr john) uptown at Tipitiana's, we met em both. I grew up with Art Neville's yougest son Ian and he was able to get us backstage to see him. They were great that night!
Yeah, God Bless them all! I've never seen a bad show from any of our great, local legends. Met Mr. Allen at the Parkway Bakery one day. What a nice, down-to-earth Gentleman. Always a smile, and a good word for everybody. Sigh... reminds me of our good friend Coco who passed away right around this time not too many years ago.
Holy cow! You're the second luckiest guy on the planet. I can't imagine directing this. Out fuc*ing standing. Talk about a night of a thousand stars.... This is just awesome. Thx for sharing. I'm .. I'm... stuttering here. Great video.
There is so much awesome in this video I find myself re-watching it all the time. The three-drummer attack, Danko in great health, Billy Preston, Joe Walsh...I could go on and on.
R.I.P Dr. John you're music will live on , He was also a student of Professor Long Hair Genius's Of New Orleans Piano. He even made some Music Lessons with Home Spun Tapes I have a few , Cheers From Canada.
R.I.P. Dr. John, born Malcolm John Rebennack, {November 20th,1941 - June 6th, 2019}... Between 1972 and 1974 the New Orleans native had four records on Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart, one made the Top 10, "Right Place Wrong Time", it peaked at #9 {for 2 weeks} on June 24th, 1973 and spent twenty weeks on the Top 100... His three other Top 100 records were "Iko Iko" {#71 in 1972}, "Such A Night {#42 in 1973}, and "(Everybody Wanna Get Rich) Rite Away" {#92 in 1974}...
Man this. Rings me back. I’m so grateful to be from New Orleans. This was always playing when my family get together. Let it be for crawfish boils, Christmas, or just a birthday. It reminds me of the good times and family. My parraine and marraine would always act out the part of them on the bayou 😂
I watched this with mixed emotions. Fantastic version of New Orleans classic, but it's tough to watch knowing that we've lost about half of the incredible talents on that stage. Levon, Danko, Preston, Clemons have all left us.
Steve, I know how you feel and I truly hope that the Doctor, Ringo, Joe and the boys stay with us for as long as possible, I'm praying hard and long to keep them with us.xx
deep, the easter eggs / nods to acknowledgment of the Voodoo side, from Yoruba via Haiti to New Orleans when the ferry from Haiti brought the jazz musicians to and fro... that voodoo headdress that is... carnival etc. but no... and then the Santana-esque guitarist alluding to black magic woman and the Yoruban influence on Puerto Rico and thus Santana.... and then the Sax, acknowledging the Blues Brothers and chicago blues etc. mixed with sax, the New York sound.... you accentuated the best of what Dr. John's music was the culmination of... this is like watching a Tarantino film in the form of music production.... kudos....
I saw this iteration when they came to Long Island. Truly a spectacular show. I love "the band", so seeing Levon, Rick, and Garth was an added bonus. The version that this group of all-stars did of "the weight" was amazing. I remember "the big man" brought the house down when he took a solo. A memorable night for sure...😎
@@lastkayleeuw6706 - Two giants to be sure, and I'll personally always give the edge to the Beatles, but the Stones were great song writers, had chops - and don't forget the swagger!
Went to Jazz and Heritage Fest last May in New Orleans . I knew and listened to Dr. John before , then I saw him live . Now I'm reading his book, and I respect him that much more .
My girlfriend and I were up one night and heard the good Dr. pumping this out on KXT in Dalas. The next day I had to listen to it and am so happy that this version is out there. Very bittersweet to see Rick, Levon, and Clarence kicking ass on their respective axes. Thank you for posting.
And hats off to Mr ever modest Ringo Star - looking and sounding great - who introduces this one, then takes his spot. Billy Preston keyboarding so well, as usual.
@HagbardCeline42 I feel the same way. It makes me move. When I originally posted it (I was the Director), I thought that only a few people would ever watch it. I am gratified that people who love music have found it. The band was a gas to work with.
Unfortunately it is not available in the USA but is available in Europe (UK, Germany, etc.) . If you look on the various Amazon's, you might find it in Zone 1 ntsc but most are PAL zone 2.
I'm glad a few people have found it. I was a co-producer and director on the show and enjoyed every minute.
When was this recorded and is that also Billy Preston on the keys?
@@PeterMcCartt I think in 1989. Yes, Billy Preston is on the keys!
@@cesarprieto2983 Thanks Cesar, it is awesome.
Excellent 🎉❤💃
@@PeterMcCarttYes that is Billy Preston among others 💃
Not even the good Doctor can resist shaking his ass to a Rick Danko bassline! This video rules on so many levels.
Yes I agree 💯💃
Dr John...what a wizard musically, magically, spiritually. I am entertained.
Amazing that Preston, Levon, Rick, The Big Man and now Dr John are no longer with us. Crazy talent on that stage that's quickly disappearing.
Sam St. John
Yes it's horrific that the real talent up to date is fading away
What are left with , well you can all see
RIP Dr. John now. Love this song so much.
Hard to believe that 5 of those musicians are no longer with us...
I worked with many great musicians in my career and I appreciate all the comments this video receives. It was among my favorites in particular because of Mac and Rick Danko's performance. It never fails to get me moving.
I met both Rick and Mac. They were great musicians and people.
ME Too 💃😁
this was Ringo's best all-star band. hands down!! wish I was there.
I was lucky enough to have brought the complete concert on DVD. The good doctor here is in great form playing this classic with a stage full of legends. This band is really the best of all Ringo's all star bands.
Dr. John rocking out. Levon, Ringo and Jim Keltner. Wow. Drum groove heaven.
The headdress is because the song is about Mardi Gras Indians, who are the opposite of minstrels. Their motto, "We won't bow down," is a shout of defiance against the forces arrayed against them.
So much talent on that stage. This is incredible!
Look at Rick getting down on that bass! Seeing all the legends on that stage, is just like, perfect

Thanks for the comment. When I first posted the video I didn't realize the reach of youtube and the number of real music lovers. It's been great.

I never saw Dr John dance before.

Such a tastey gumbo of well-seasoned talent, love that eternal flavor
RIP Dr. John. You were truly unique.
Seeing Rick Danko play on one of my favourite songs..... wow. Awesome
Wow, thanks for posting this video! It's a treasure. ♥
Glad Jim Keltner was noticed. To me, a giant drummer and nice guy.
He really should have been recognized as the Sixth Wilbury.

When it comes down to it. Life with good music like this is worth living. Thanks to all musicians and singers that help my life being balance.
So much talent on one stage.
Bill and Mike. This is one of my favorites ❤
My favorite Dr. John performance ever! And WHAT A BAND!!!!
Don't Forget Billy Preston on keyboards as well!
Yep. The only man to play with the Beatles and Stones
Bob Allen What makes the Stones as good as the Beatles?

I saw this lineup at Blossom Music Center in '89!!!
Excellent show!
What a band. Dr. John is amazing live.

Dr. John; King of the Mardi Gras
It doesn't get any better than this!
This vid is chock full of musical genius. Proof that music doesn't have to be all technique in order to be appreciated.
luv Billy Preston. luv the Big Man! I could go on and on and on and on!
Goodbye, Mac. Irreplaceable. 😢
Had to look this up after seeing Dr. John do it last night in Monterey, California.
One of my favourite Dr John songs. :D
Interesting arrangement of a great tune..love the "get up" Dr. John is wearing..he was one great artist...really great pianist too:)
I get a little depressed seeing "The Big Man" who is no longer with us. RIP Clarence.
He gave us plenty of good musical memories during his lifetime.
So many legends sharing one stage!
Just saw that the Dr, has passed. what a treasure.
