  • I've had these marvelous performances by the late, great "Night Tripper" on an old VHS tape for over three decades. I found it unbelievable that there was no trace online of this particular TV appearance, probably recorded over four separate sessions. LIVE TRACKLIST:
    0:00 - SOMETHING YOU GOT
    3:35 - SUCH A NIGHT
9:32 - RIGHT PLACE WRONG TIME
13:14 - DANCE THE NIGHT AWAY WITH YOU
    16:55 - TIPTINA
    20:40 - BON TON ROULET
    24:42 - WILD HONEY
28:00 - GEORGIA ON MY MIND
33:20 - HUEY 'PIANO' SMITH MEDLEY
(Rockin Pneumonia / High Blood Pressure / Don't you just know it)

I first came upon the doctor in the 60s with his hippy trippy stuff (which went down well with a joint or two) but it is really his rock solid piano that I have fallen in love with (and this performance has that in spades). Good lord, the inevitable “they were so underrated” comment. Dr. John was highly rated and well known both here and abroad (and a living legend and icon in his hometown of NO) for what, 50 years or more? There are New Orleans musicians that don’t get the credit they deserve, but Dr. John I don’t think is one of them.
