Watching Dazed and Confused in the theater as a 13 year old turned me onto this song. I went to the local mom and pop record store (I sooo miss those) and recited the chorus and got turned on to the funky ass sounds of Dr. John. RIP Docta, you are sorely missed.
One of my uncles had this record. I remember him playing it on a turntable one time when I was over their house visiting as a small child. One of my favorite songs from the 70s. RIP Dr. John🙏🙏
When I first heard this on the radio as a child, I didn't know what to make of it. It stayed in my head until I got it, and it still lives there. One of the songs I will blast from my 1970 Torino when it is finally fully on the road. Roll in to a cruise night, and hit play as soon as pull in. And leaving? Magic Carpet Ride...

@ I do and the one situation that I’ve always found hilarious was my girlfriend and I were heading back down to California and got a ride with a long haul semi truck driver. Both he and my friend were tall people and I ended up taking a nap in the back cabin. When we finally got dropped off somewhere my friend told me that the guy said he’s never heard a small person like me snoring so loud 🤭🤭🤣🤣and to this day I still rattle windows and scare my cat 🤭
I was 11 yrs old when this song was released. It got A LOT of airtime on the top 40AM station I used to listen to way back when I lived in Norfolk Virginia; WKLX AM 1350. This song fit perfectly right in with the funk-soul-R&B genre of the time.
Mac, you were an amazing pianist - such grooves that epitomised every decade - but this track, lyrically, speaks volumes - you think you know where you’re going in life, then !!! bam. Love & admiration for your work & incredible personality. JaneR
Great little piece of FUNK! In case you didn't know, that utterly unique keyboard sound is none other than an RMI Electra Piano. I've seen video of Dr. John playing this song live on a Rhodes, but it's the RMI, played the way he plays it, that makes this song really special.
Early '70s funk is some of the most fun you'll ever have in music. Stank face and body moving all on its own.
Yep! There was a rich variety of music in the 70s, and funk is my favorite!😊
Born in 1998. Love this music. Such a fun sound!
The Meters backing up Mac on this. They are the NOLA King's of Funk.

@@Newton-Reuther Mac turned me onto Melinda's Habanero Sauce.I still have a gri gri charm of the Superdome he gave me.
This song is definitely NOT funk. There is no repetitive bassline driving the song and there is no emphasis on the first beat...
So lucky to have grown up in the 60's and 70's. such great music!!!
The best music ever I think so many great bands and talented musicians
My son's 40 and he's been listening to good music since before birth. ❤
