Lyrics:
If you want me to stay
I'll be around today
To be available for you to see
I'm about to go
And then you'll know
For me to stay here I've got to be me
You'll never be in doubt
That's what it's all about
You can't take me for granted and smile
Count the days I'm gone
Forget reaching me by phone
Because I promise I'll be gone for a while
When you see me again
I hope that you have been
The kind of person that you really are now
You got to get it straight
How could I ever be late
When you're my woman takin' up my time
How could you ever allow
I guess I wonder how
How could you get out of pocket for fun
When you know that you never number two
Number one gonna be number one
I'll be good
I wish I could
Get this message over to you now
When you see me again
I hope that you have been
The kind of person you really are now
I'll be so good
I wish I could
Get the message over to you now

Bobbi Kristina was a Pisces too I think ..her and Bobby brown song was this song I GOT TO BE ME 🥰🙏🏾 rip to the princess and Whitney ❤️
Unbelievable this song is 50 years old. 1973-2023. Thank you Sly for letting every music artist be themselves.
👍👍👏👏🖖🇩🇪🖖
Eric Benet did a cover of this song
Timeless
I truly appreciate & have much gratitude for the musicians who chose to release cover versions of this truly iconic song 🎶!! However, my forever favorite version will always be the original one 💃❤️
Hallelujah
This song was played in Dead Presidents..wow I love black people wish we loved each other ..only a gifted people could create something soo beautiful..
That bass line kills it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sly played it, himself too!
Sly's voice is like sandpaper and honey. This is a straight up masterpiece.
MOO damn I don’t know if I’ve ever heard it put better than that. Sandpaper and honey. Perfect
Sly and the Family Stone live
True that!
Moo: Mica Paris version is absolutely great too and a beautiful tribute to Sly...
ruclips.net/video/F9w9nG6O74k/видео.html
Moo or maybe a voice like a ‘serrated rainbow’? Sandpaper and honey is better though 😂
I NEVER get tired of hearing this.
😎💜✌️👏👏👏👏🤟

One of THE best bass lines ever recorded in music history.
Larry Graham the best baby
@@wymellwilliams1543 Larry Graham had already left the band, believe it or not that's actually Sly playing the bass
That was Rusty Allen on the bass guitar on this track. Larry Graham was gone from the group .
@@reainealgraham7139 I thought it was Rusty Allen as well for the longest time, but it's Sly on bass
@@ChrisBasdeo Sly is one of the most talented musicians ever. He literally plays every instrument. That’s why Prince and D’Angelo always give this man his props. He’s a musical genius.
Larry Graham on bass.Slap style. I'm a 65 year old white kid grew up in the Bay area and Soul Train was my go to every Saturday. Remember Sly as a DJ. Living in Canada now and turning my grandkids on to this wonderful music.
That is actually Sly playing bass. LG left Sly in 1972. This song was released June 1973.
@@michaelcarter9117 No I think that Is LG on Bass Sly Is on The Keyboards, Check them out at Soul Train, You Tube,
Because good music and good people have no color
Rusty Allen
Dad, you weren’t the best father and you did a lot wrong, but I am so very grateful you introduced me to this band. Good lord I can’t even explain how much I love this song. Play it almost every day.
My Dad hipped me to this song too!
I have been told by my mom that people don't come with instruction books and I am sure your dad didn't have an instruction book so if he fed you, put a roof over your head... That's what his parents taught him.... So remember his mistakes and learn from him what you should not do
Bless you
I’m the mother .. or was , have been .
You rock
This song just doesnt last long ENOUGH! I thought the same thing in the 70s. Loved it then still love the hell out of it now!!
😇💕🙏🏽💕👌🏾
That's why I PLAY IT 2#👊🏿✌🏿
I hear you brother, should have a long jazzy ass instrumental solo.
it just gives you a taste of elusive greatness
Played it over and over. There was no loop option back then. Lol. Love love love this band.
This is an all-time masterpiece, the way the start is like all these hazy, loose elements gathering themselves into a rythm, and then you get these three incredibly memorable melodies (Sly & the twin horn and keyboard lines) not interfering with each other, perfectly adding to what one another is doing? The mixing is perfect as well, the bass punchy at the front carrying the song and the horns restrained and giving just enough without rising above the other sounds. The vocal DELIVERY as well... genius, genius, genius.
Way, way ahead of it's time. And don't forget....it's mostly Sly (probably).
Yes yes yes
Well described musicologist!
Intro is amazing, just getting you warmed up
Amen!
My wife is 61 and I'm 63. We still get down to this song just like we did in high school!
This Man is FUNK !!!, Inside and Out , Out Side and
Sly is still relevant... he's still alive
How do we bring him back??? This is our music of the 70's. Forever Funck my brothers and sisters!
I knew from a very young age that this was something special the first time I heard it. A collision of genius ..on repeat....
Love the expression, "a collision of genius." Now THAT really hit home😊!
I was 5 and I knew this was a bop…..33 now and it still carries 💯👏🏾
That low note he hits gives me chills every single time.
Me too, really listen to what hes saying. this conveys in so many ways.
Indeed
That bass line is everything, learned how to play by listening to this song like a million times never gets old
like the jazz under tones
Make a Video ... Show us how it is Played!!
It's not graham, I thought for years that it was
That bass....THAT BASS!
@Noel It's not Graham?
He did a tutorial video of how to play his style, and he talks about using his finger as a pick, and this song was the one he did that with
this song damn near a perfect tune

MASCULINE AF

One of the best songs EVER. Just a master piece.

There would be no Prince without Sly Stone.. You hear Sky’s influence all over Prince voice, style and musicianship.
@Yolonda Douglas-English Yes, you're so right. He was heavily influenced by Sly and the Family Stone. Do you remember Prince had a group called "The Family".
@@kbryant187 of course
Macy Gray got a lot from Sly as well, style wise
Hey! I think everybody has some magic to offer all their very own. I like to think every bit of creativity combined is why we are partnered with music we love in all aspects of our lives ❤
Prince literally covered this song
Sly and "the family" were one of the best bands of all-time. Showed us that Black & White, Men & Women could get along just fine. Peace y'all!
He was the prince of the 70s
@@andrewstrong40 yo I understand ur sentiment but to b honest no one compares to Sylvester Stewart...as great as prince was....sly and the family stone were the architects of modern music....he's n the top tier of geniuses in any genre of music
😍🥰🥰🥰🥰
Absolutely .. One nation under the groove
yes one of the first black & white band.
Sly is not homeless.....he perfers to move around so he likes VanLife! He's usually parked at friends home so he can shower etc...he was really done wrong by record companies and concert promoters......they all took advantage of his lack of knowledge about finances.....so sad and disrespectful......he kinda F'up his head.....some entertainers need to step in and assist this man.....he is a LEGEND 🙌
Killer bass-line. Sly is the master of R & B/ Funk/Rock. Thanks for posting.
Sly Stone of the best and most underrate musicians of the 20th century.
So true. I was lucky to be passed on his (and their) genius by my dad and so thankful - soulful funk on a stellar level
💯💯💯💜✌️
Who's listening in 2020 and reminiscing at the same time?
I can't not do both, 16 in 1970, the 70's was my time. I didn't know it then. I do now....Sly wow simply could not stand still when he hit my ears

Ah Yea
I am old school also, Sly and the family, bring back some good memories.

Ohhhh maaaaan, this was my JAM! Takes me back to a happy place as a little girl in the 70s, with my mom, dad, and siblings all together growing up in our family home 😢. Some of my siblings have since then passed on 🥹 Boy, I sure miss those days.
My very first live concert was Sly and the Family Stone....1972 at the Philadelphia Spectrum. I will NEVER forget it! I was 15 years old, suburban white girl--IT WAS AWESOME!!!!!!! Have loved him since....
I'm really jealous, I bet it was awesome!!

This band was at Woodstock playing Funk before there was the name. Kind of like Iggy and the Stooges playing punk years before that classification. Sly is the Godfather of the Funk, let it be known.
And making it Happen... A Good dude...
steamaweed don't forget James Brown now.
kinda like howling wolf, muddy waters, chuck berry, and all those individuals playing rock n roll before it was called that.
Since I come from that time (60's), just to let you know, James Brown (Godfather of Soul) and George Clinton (Godfather of Clone Funk, P-Funk) were already on the scene. Sly brought in a whole new funky sound, however, adding rock to r&b, becoming the Master of this genre of Funk, straight from California. With a Diverse band, Diverse sound and Diverse LOOK. They were mod, wore funky clothes, were colorful to look at as well as listen to. We were never the same afterwards. He brought everyone together, black, white, red, polka-dot, WHATEVER!! Was so much fun, would I love to go back there again? Better believe it..
Just as an fyi, James is dubbed “The godfather of soul.” And yes, he indeed was. But he was also the godfather of funk, in spite of that title never being attributed to him (so much for classical labeling!). James delivered funk as early as the 60s; groups like Sly and P-Funk borrowed the style, which became popular in the early 70s when these groups were flying high. Recognize, now….
Growing up in the 70’s & 80’s Sly was a hometown hero, representing Vallejo, Ca.
That's a monster vocal performance by Sly
Also a monster bass line...
His vocal approach to this song is so casual... his attitude so cavalier...., it could almost be mistaken for a demo.
Yet, he makes it work brilliantly!
Luv that karate kick thatbSly does
Yes.
A masterpiece!
ALL IS WELL EITHER WAY ☺️
True.
Anybody else around in the summer of 1973 when this hit?
+Teenie One I was 11.
Present :-)
+Teenie One Yep. I was three years old during that time. That was when real music ruled the radio airwaves.
+Teenie One I sure was around. 73 was my favorite year and this was my favorite song! I get misty thinking about those old days and I CERTAINLY miss the music of those days.
+Teenie One , I was a freshman in High School. The 70's, best decade to grow up in!
I remember growing up in East Oakland and it didn't matter what color you were. Everyone listened to Sly and the family stone. And others of the same. Damn those were good days. What's happened to us all?
Yes I grew up in Piedmont. Rich white boy. But we all listened to KDIA. Lake Temiskal. Every body getting along.. what happened?
@@user-mt5tt6kb1d Barry Sotero is what happened.
This will absolutely never get old.
IF YOU WANT ME TO STAY is a timeless treasure...Thank you Sly and the Family Stone!
I know it's been hard for you in the past Sly, but I'm praying that the LORD JESUS will help you to STAY ( strong), bless you!!!

I love this band and song even more than I did in 1973. Turned my 3 year old granddaughter to Sly and the Family Stone. She loves them too❤
I remember growing up in the projects in the 70's and the older people bringing out the big 1970's speakers and blasting this song, along with Parliament/Funkadelic, late into the night! Good Times!!
I feel fortunate to have ever had this song grace my ears. If you were a child of the Funk Era recognize your soul was seasoned by greatness.

I love this song. His voice and the bass, everything!
Ikr! And the funk, I just love it. I'm 67 and I makes me feel like I'm 16 again lol. Got me dancing in my chair again!

@@fullofcyn i was about to post the same thing, that they played this on "money talks".
Yes!
Exact why I'm here lol
That BASSLINE though!!!
I love the bass lines, and drums in this song. The bass just flows from chord to chord, not loudly announcing anything. Genius
And also one of the sexiest trumpet players in history “Cynthia Roberson”, she sets the tone as much as bass with that smooth, riff that announces the song, that doesn’t distract from sly at all!
There are songs as good as this song, but none that are better.
THIS is REAL music!!!
Kim Roby Sorry, I don't understand what you mean when you say 'real music', it's either music or not.
This is true
Kim Roby foreal realtalk no lie

Yes ma'am!
This bassline is what made me want to learn bass as a teen. That groove is so funkin sick
I was lucky enough to see this bassist perform in the mid 1990's as part of Prince's group at that time. Prince introduced this illustrious group of musicians saying that they had all been Sly's family. :)
Long time no hear Mr Sly😊, blew me away and brought back child hood memories🙏... Like a fine red wine, aged mature and outstanding👌
Happy Birthday Sly ❤❤❤
Love this so much I could listen to it all day. Memories of when I was young! Now I’m 72 but still dancin to it. Mm mm good stuff!
WOW. I just listened to this with headphones for the 1st time. I am blown away- so sophisticated. Maybe Sly never got enough credit...
Sly got all kinds of credit! He just upped and walked away!
This still hits hard in the year of 2023!
Almost 50 years old and the song still never becomes dated.
Real hard
When i was 7, This song is the only reason I fell in love with the dead presidents movie! After I didn't hear it anywhere else I just played the movie over & over again just to hear him playing the song!
Lost my job to a bad back injury, had to resign because of the injury feeling so down but this music brings me back up. I see how Bobbi Brown kept singing this song make you feel good about things and make you reflect on others.
Very nice bass line!

Okay the vibe in the recording studio while Sly does his magic must have been electric......the blend of the vocal and music is mind blowing......
Reading his Memoir and reminiscing about the days when his music filled the airways. Sly and the FS’ music was everything to me and my siblings. ❤
The epitome of Funk. I hear Prince, Cameo, Ohio Players, etc. Sly Stone was the fountain that they all drank from.

I hear an era that needs to be taught to the groove-less musicians that exist today.

I got really put on to this song, from Dead Presidents, when Larenz Tate's character came home from the war, went into the bar and everyone was happy to see he had made it home, giving him drinks and pats on the back, and handshakes. Anthony was a grown man now. The cinematography was dope, one of the best scenes in the film. Peace to all the cast, crew, producers, directors, and especially the musical director. Thanks for that masterpiece of art.
