Well, technically, I’m pretty sure their problem wasn’t with Herb being gay, it was with the bad press. Sarah Lynn’s step dad being creepy wasn’t out in the press bringing bad attention to the show so they couldn’t have cared less. Doesn’t make the industry any less scummy though.

Before this particular event we can see that every time Bojack has a drink in his hand it's soda. Canonically in the timeline this is the really the furst scene we see him indulging in alcoholism. Which means his alcoholism started here. A.k.a it was developing around this time.

If he had told Herb that after his talk that his threat meant nothing and that he could not threaten to keep his job, then Herb wouldn’t be mad. Bojack would have tried and done what herb asked. Just because it was not successful doesn’t mean he didn’t do anything wrong. I wonder how things would have been had Herb and Bojack stayed friends.
Walking out means quiting, but Bojack did all he could do, remember what that lady told Bojack "If Herb really is your friend, he would understand." And she was right, as Herb told Bojack "I don't care about the job, I did fine. I had a good life but what I needed was a friend and you abounded me." Herb did understood about Bojack not quiting because he was his friend and understood.

This moment becomes 10x sadder when you realize SPOILERS .... Bo Jack really could have save Herb's career if he walked and ending the show was just an empty threat. I'm glad herb didn't forgive him because if he had it wouldn't have been the bitter truth the show likes to drop on a silver platter. But I do wish we could have gotten an episode of Bo Jack imagining what his life would have been like if he had quit the show for Herb and got his act together earlier in life. Kind of like how people do when we're laying in bed at night and thinking about all the horrible mistakes we've made.
Ultimately the show wasn't that big a deal. Herb managed to move on with his life pretty easily. The problem was how Bojack totally ghosted Herb when his friend needed him most. That was what Bojack did wrong, thinking his job was more important than his friend.
But it’s not about the show, it’s about how Bojack abandoned Herb. It’s not one decision that changed Bojack’s life, he made the decision not to reach out to Herb every single day for almost 20 years.
Oh god, I'm sure alot of us can relate to this kind of moment when we hear some one screws up big time and expect it to be us or some one we know but plot twist is that it turns out of wasn't you or that one person this time

What I noticed (after the trillionth rewatch) is that in Bojack's room, there are Keith Haring-inspired paintings in the background. Keith Haring was openly gay during the 80's and advocated for safe sex through his art. He sadly died of AIDS in 1990. I like that by putting Haring-inspired artworks in Bojack's room, the viewer is informed / foreshadowed on Bojack's stance towards homosexuality.
Haring also did art for children’s hospitals. As a kid I saw prints of his work in multiple facilities. He died at the age of 31, which is way too young.

I grew up in the 90s and didn’t realize how much has changed since then until I watched this show. Maybe this had a part in the 2000s-era fear and uncertainty I felt at realizing I liked other girls. (Thankfully my parents were okay with it, not every girl is that lucky.)

If Bojack had called Herb even like maybe three times between the show being cancelled and finding out he was dying I think Herb wouldn't have minded as much. He'd still be pissed but not to the same extent.
Herb got over it. He liked the show but he still got to work on other things that made a difference. If Bojack had realized that there was more to life than fame and attention he probably could have been there for Herb and even helped with a lot of the philanthropy stuff.
SPOILER: In one of the last episodes Angela (the executive that wants to fire Herb) admits that she was bloufing. If BoJack had put enough pressure, Herb could have keeped his job.

I can tell Bojack was conflicted about what to do. Had he chosen the sliver of decency that pops out of him every so often, things could’ve been at least marginally less shitty for everyone involved. Bojack is fundamentally screwed up and no matter what he’d make horrible choices. Had he kept Herb in his life though, I feel the human would have been a better influence on him and at least steer the stallion away from far worse things. Things would’ve always had tension and be far from perfect, but such a future would’ve at least been better.

Ultimately the show wasn't that big a deal. Herb managed to move on with his life pretty easily.
The problem was how Bojack totally ghosted Herb when his friend needed him most. That was what Bojack did wrong, thinking his job was more important than his friend.
But it’s not about the show, it’s about how Bojack abandoned Herb. It’s not one decision that changed Bojack’s life, he made the decision not to reach out to Herb every single day for almost 20 years.

What I noticed (after the trillionth rewatch) is that in Bojack's room, there are Keith Haring-inspired paintings in the background. Keith Haring was openly gay during the 80's and advocated for safe sex through his art. He sadly died of AIDS in 1990.
I like that by putting Haring-inspired artworks in Bojack's room, the viewer is informed / foreshadowed on Bojack's stance towards homosexuality.
Haring also did art for children’s hospitals. As a kid I saw prints of his work in
multiple facilities.
He died at the age of 31, which is way too young.

I grew up in the 90s and didn’t realize how much has changed since then until I watched this show. Maybe this had a part in the 2000s-era fear and uncertainty I felt at realizing I liked other girls.

If Bojack had called Herb even like maybe three times between the show being cancelled and finding out he was dying I think Herb wouldn't have minded as much. He'd still be pissed but not to the same extent.
Herb got over it. He liked the show but he still got to work on other things that made a difference. If Bojack had realized that there was more to life than fame and attention he probably could have been there for Herb and even helped with a lot of the philanthropy stuff.

I can tell Bojack was conflicted about what to do. Had he chosen the sliver of decency that pops out of him every so often, things could’ve been at least marginally less shitty for everyone involved. Bojack is fundamentally screwed up and no matter what he’d make horrible choices. Had he kept Herb in his life though, I feel the human would have been a better influence on him and at least steer the stallion away from far worse things. Things would’ve always had tension and be far from perfect, but such a future would’ve at least been better.
