I can understand greenways in scenic parts of the country. But this Greenway would have been perfect for a train. The trip to Youghal by train was one of the highlights of my childhood.Trains were packed.Great memories.
Youghal should be Rail connected again to Cork via Middleton for commuters and tourists. How many walkers/cyclists will commute to/from Youghal--Middleton--Cork instead of driving?
I am not sure the greenway was ever proposed as anything other than a recreational route but the delay seems never-ending as there were expectations about a year ago that the beginning of 2024 would see its completion.
There seems to be a touch of "Mañana without the same sense of urgency" about the construction of this greenway - progress appears to be glacial. We were told that the Midleton/Mogeely stretch would be open in Autumn 23 and now this has been put back to April/May 24. I wouldn't be surprised if that gets delayed to Autumn 24 and the Mogeely/Youghal section will probably take until Spring 25. Very disappointing.
Sadly the maddest scheme of them all. There's more than enough justification to reopen the railway but it has been lost forever now. And before someone naively trots out the line that the alignment is protected, it is clearly not when you look at the new accomodation crossings at 3:04, 3:11, 3:14, 3:58, and 5:15 (a truly bizarre monstrosity), and the diversion at 4:07 (reinforcing an alleged adverse possession) to see that rather than protecting, these ensure that any future reopening is all but impossible.
Great progress video!! Looks like very slow going in some parts….. ie Killeagh and Youghal makes me wonder will the open Mogeely to Midleton 1st?? It’ll be nice to have a safe space to bring the kids and maybe tourism like Dungarvan Greenway 🤷🏼♂️
The whole Greenway was expected to open Summer 2023. Then the plan was Midleton to Mogeely in Summer 23, then Oct 23, now Feb 24. I doubt the whole greenway will open in 2024. Maybe 2025.
Thanks for the video. It's a damning reflection on this country that in order to get from village A to village B safely on a bike or on foot, you have to do it on a special much trumpeted GREENWAY. Instead of, you know, just being able to do it as a common matter-of-fact part of your regular day. I used to cycle all over the country (many years ago). While there were spots where it was dodgy due to drivers, now it's gotten to the level of absolutely everywhere is dodgy due to drivers. People who live in 'rural' areas are effectively trapped in their houses unless they have a car. No kids walk or cycle to school, or the local shops, or to see their friends anymore in rural areas. Roads have been sterilised of life by drivers. And now that they don't expect to meet anyone on those roads, drivers are going even faster and more dangerously than they ever did before. Couple all the above with the fact that Ireland has the worst land-access rights of anywhere in Europe means that everyone has lost connection with the outside environment. You can only cycle long distances on special greenways, and you can only walk long distances on 'special' walking routes. And people here think all this is normal. It's not.
Coming from Germany I was surprised by how closed of everything is. We got a lot of special cycle/walk ways running parallel to a lot of roads but the biggest difference is that you can just cross the landscape through "field roads" in Germany. All those actively farmed fields are not seperated by little walls or berms but by little dirt roads that are open to anyone who wants to use them. They are great for traffic free walking, hiking and cycling. Ireland would profit so much from doing that I think. You got a beautiful country here and it would open it to everyone living there to just stroll through the fields.
Agreed. I am 41 love love cycling for soul and body... Now I have 3... Soon to be 4 kids. Sense of responsibility doesn't allow me to go and cycle on the road. Way too dangerous. Had to get a stationary bike for the body, soul will have to wait for another greenway.
Yes , lay some track , even 500 Meters would show intent and there appears to be enough room between the fences and other boundary markers for a cycle way. And peg out the position of the sidings and the run-round . Beware the hazard of just leaving overhanging trees to invade and excite conservationist obstructors. I look forward to your next recording the problem of invasive species in full leaf. The headroom under the new overpasses looks worrying.
While I agree, there hasn't been a passenger train on that line in 60 years. There was no political will to reopen the line and no plans from Irish Rail. The train to Midleton and Cobh only has two carriages and outside of rush hour is mostly empty. It was either Greenway or nothing.
Railways are a technology that doesn't work in low density areas. Great in urban Japan rubbish in most other places. If you want railways in Ireland you need to make urban areas much bigger and denser.
if a train can serve midleton, it can also serve youghal, it would incentivise growth in the areas along the line, benefitting the people of the area.@@patrickroche7026
@@patrickroche7026 do you actually use the east cork railway link?. It is jammed every morning and every evening. Add to that the N25 is a disaster with traffic and the fact that the only public bus between youghal and the city is infrequent, always late (due to the n25 traffic) and almost impossible to get a seat. The train extended to youghal would be very well utilised. The fact that no one saw this when they started planning this project is madness. Sure the greenway will be useful for recreation, but that does not help the disaster that is the N25
I believe Irish rail still own the ground and reserve the right to convert it back into a railway in the future. I suspect in 10 years time they will do this. Making this current project a waste of money but that's nothing new in Ireland.

it's a huge place first time seeing it .
As a cyclist looking forward to riding this route, it's great to have this update. Well done.

Totally 👍 agree
Great video, looking forward to following the route once it opens. Would have preferred to be following it by train, but it’s better than bothing

Next May!!! I thought it was much further along than that. We'll be waiting a long while for the whole thing so

Nice video. Don't forget the South Kerry Greenway which is currently under construction.
Noted!

A major major mistake not reopening the route to trains. It’s badly needed.
Can you realistically see the traffic justifying this?
@@edwardhogan1877 East Cork is very different now compared to 1988. The N25 is a bottleneck.
Any decade now theyll be almost finished
Can we use now??
Next may for the Midelton to Belgooly section, 2025 for full opening I reckon
Shame its the railway that should be reinstated

I agree
So, basically - in 3 years they’ve done very little. The train line would have been fixed faster.
one of the biggest mistakes made in cork, could have restored the railway
Colosseum was built faster I’d say 🤦♂️

The railway should've been brought back reconnecteing to midleton, not this rubbish😡
