Having to plug everything, turn the computer on, turn the software on... You described why I do not use my tablet very often. If I have a short 30 minute period in which I could draw, but a good part of that will be spent preparing the equipment, I simply will not bother. But with an iPad and Procreate I am looking forward to even taking advantage of short 5 minute periods I can use to draw here and there. I am so excited to get my iPad soon.
@@xxshadows_pizzaxxd4682 I’d say any iPad they’re selling on the Apple Store will be good! Older ones are good too but I’m not too familiar with the different models
That was the main reason why I bought an iPad and an Apple pencil as well. I did not like the idea of being stuck to my slow-ass computer while trying to digitally color my artwork. Not to mention, I lack the hand-eye coordination for screenless drawing tablets. I grew up traditional.
@@esmooth919, I could likely adapt to the coordination. (I do not know because the tablet I bought has a display.) That comes from years of coloring with an optical mouse I had to use over my jeans while I carried my laptop with the other hand, not the best solution for portability. But my laptop grew slower and slower, and having to plug everything was too much of a bother. I am very happy with my iPad.
I think it is also very important to know that you can import PS files and use them in Procreate and export Procreate files as PS so they are totally interchangeable.
I like using Photoshop for the iPad. I love procreate but something about the feeling of drawing on it is a bit off.. very tiny bit that I cant pin point. So I tend to go back and forth between the two. The biggest advantage of Photoshop is that it saves on the cloud. And when you go on to any desktop whether it be Mac or PC, you can access your painting there and continue your work.
I am getting an Apple Pen soon and I am quite excited! I will be working with pen pressure for the first time and I don't need to keep getting my screen dirty!
I got my first iPad Pro for the same reasons. Procreate and of course the performance in Procreate was something very special. For me though, being mobile was not all that important. I eventually handed the iPad Pro to my wife. She does all of her work on it. I had two actually. I gave the smaller one to my son. I went back to my Cintiq. I'm ready for a new tablet now but I think it will probably be the Samsung Galaxy Tab S7+. I ended up not liking Procreate very much in the end. I think though that if you are purely illustrator and if mobility is really important than the iPad Pro is the best option.
Thank you much for this informative and very convincing video. I'm definitely going to be investing in a Ipad and Procreate for my tattoo work and portable drawing convenience.
and you can animate!! It changed my whole art game as an oil painter, its nice to just let it out n play with illustratey playful feel to it. The blending and airbrush + studio pen is decent though. I would like to make digital/light paintings of super realistic hd imagination/fantasy scenes maybe even animate them. There is only so far you can go with that on procreate for now but it will get better. And just being able to draw so comfortably, you can really get in the divine creative zone, with the smooth creamy apple screen, not the harsh ones other companies have. It just finally got me on to digital painting, ive always wanted it just felt clunky with the tech before. I was hoping adobe illustrator would be full on atleast for simple brush n blending but it is awful, super pixeley!
Thank you so much for this video. I’ve been a Photoshop user for many many years and I just got a new iPad and have been considering using Procreate. I love your video and your sense of humor and what you say about the simplicity is what sold me. 🙏🏼🫀
I’m glad it was helpful! Procreate is definitely a lot simpler than Photoshop but they regularly update the app so I’m sure in the future it’ll get even more features 😁 If you find you need a certain Photoshop feature you can always just start in Procreate, export a .psd and finish it up on Photoshop :)
Haha give it a try! But remember procreate doesn’t use vectors like illustrator does 😬 if you really need vectors maybe try Affinity Designer or illustrator on iPad
@@jessicatriana great! My process right now is sketching on paper - scanning my sketch and then tracing / drawing it in illustrator. I think procreate will be much faster and I can draw everywhere (lol) I can't take my desktop computer with me 😂 well, it's almost my birthday so I might ask it to my boyfriend 😇
Wow. Before your video, my used only twice new HD22 was a sunk cost for me but not anymore. I'm selling it right now online. I'm very excited to swtich for all the reasons you spoke of. Clarity finally. Streamlined. I love that. :) Cheers.
Jessica Triana ya - I was hesitant about the cost, but I just gave in a bought it. Just got the new iPad Pro, tried photoshop first, and it was a joke. Procreate is SO much better...!!!
Very informative. I'm thinking of getting a drawing tablet for my PC but your arguments for getting an iPad and using procreate has me wondering if I should just spend more for the ability to draw wherever I want instead of having a device attached to my desktop. I feel like I would draw more often if did all my work on an iPad pro.
Yes I definitely started drawing a lot more since I got it because I’m not tied to the computer! But it also depends if you just want to draw the iPad is perfect but if you want to do animation or 3D the apps might not be sophisticated enough
Thank you for that video!! I'm thinking about getting an iPad Pro with the apple pencil and procreate but it'd be about 1200€ and it's soooo expensive for a student. But I want it so badly :( I've been drawing for a couple of years but I got so lazy to sit down at the table and start drawing... Plus I'm living on my own and I can't take my "better performance Laptop" with me when I'm travelling or visiting my parents. I mean... With covid around, there's probably not going to be any concerts or trips anyway... Maybe I really should get it
Portability was also a huge upgrade for me! I think you can cut down on the price if you buy the iPad Air (679€) or the regular iPad (399€). If you don't mind using the 11" instead of the 12.9", then I think the new iPad Air is a best value than the iPad Pro, and it's cheaper :)
@@jessicatriana Thank you! Yes i thought about that but I saw a couple of reviews who didn't recommend it for drawing, the lines seemed to have a little delay... I'm watching a lot of reviews now and it's sooo tempting to "just" buy it :D
Hey! Would be awesome if you could help me out :) So, I was going to buy a display. I have photoshop but my abonnement has only 3 months left. All the advantages of iPad make me wanna buy it, but I bought an extremely expensive laptop(gamer) so it could work Adobe programs. I feel like Im missing out not working with them, and “wasting” my laptop. (although I would have to buy Adobe again and that’s expensive, while procreate is cheap) what do you think?
Well you'd have to buy an iPad as well which is also not cheap. For the computer I recommend trying Affinity or Clip Studio Paint, they are cheaper than photoshop and with no subscription model. If you know anyone with an iPad I'd recommend asking them to try it, even if it's a free app like Sketchbook. This way you'll understand if you'd rather draw on the computer or on the iPad and if it's worth the investment for you. If it's a gaming computer you would also not waste the laptop, I'm guessing you also bought it to play games. And there's always more things to do on the computer :) I should also mention: Procreate is really intuitive and simple but Clip Studio Paint, Photoshop, and Affinity do have more features. You can also use Clip Studio Paint and Affinity on the iPad if you like the programs. Hope this helped :)
If you want to do photo manipulation try Affinity Photo for the iPad. It is excellent. It is a one time payment . Both Procreate and Affinity Photo are excellent apps.
Hey Jessica! I'm a student almost through with college, art major w/ graphic design emphasis, and I'd like to jump into the world of digital art. I'm on the fence between a graphic pen tablet and an iPad...I'd go for the pen tablet because of the price (and I already have Photoshop) except that I'm really interested in what Procreate and Adobe Fresco can do. The price tag is a big factor as well... how long did you have a graphics tablet before you switched to iPad? This video and your video about which digital tablet to choose are awesome, thank you.
Hi Brynn! I used tablets for about 6 years before getting the iPad! I used them through university as well, and only got my iPad after I started working. I personally love the portability and the Touch screen. But if you’re tight for money and you already have a good computer and Photoshop you’ll be able to make great work without an iPad :) If you know anyone with a tablet or an iPad I’d recommend you ask them to try it out and see what you think of the experience in both!
@@jessicatriana Ok, cool! Thanks for the reply. I am tight on money, so I talked to my parents and I've decided a graphics tablet will work just fine for now. I can always upgrade later, especially if works demands it. The Intuos (CTL4100) I'm looking at also says it comes with some free softwares, so I can test them out as well. :)
@@brynnevans1025 no problem! Yes you can always update later :) I’m sure that Intuos will be great to get started in digital art. If you do any photo editing for design projects it’s also a really good tool 👌
What about the iPad photoshop though if computer is not ideal to you? And have you tried adobe fresco? It seems to have tons of features for free and seems to be similar to procreate. Is there still a reason to get procreate?
When I bought procreate Photoshop for iPad didn’t exist yet, and since I don’t pay for Adobe subscription I haven’t tried it. But I do wanna try Adobe fresco!
Hi Jessica, thanks for your video. I can see why Procreate is so popular but any thoughts on Adobe Fresco for the iPad? Have you possibly used the recent Fresco 3.6 lately, too?
Thanks, glad you liked it! I have the 11” iPad :) and yes, I edit all my videos on my iPad because my computer is old and too slow for video editing softwares
I made the mistake of starting with photoshop and I see everywhere such cool artists using procreate and it seems so simple and intuitive like you said, now I want to change xd I mean at least adobe could make a "lighter photoshop" with only drawings tools or smth..
I started with Photoshop too! Procreate doesn't have ALL the features, but I like the simplicity :) And if you know Photoshop Procreate will be really easy to learn. If you know anyone that uses Procreate I'd recommend asking them to try it so you can compare them before buying it
I don’t use either at this time but with some recent watercolor mixed media work I did, I want to “touch some errors up” and wonder could I up load my work and then use these to enhance my work? If so, which one would you recommend?
thanx for your video, but i still dont understand why on some videos the youtuber draws on the procreate BUT then they transfer their drawing to their laptop to finish on photoshop or illustrator and im not a pro on these softwares so thts why i dont understand why they do tht, i just want to know if i need to do tht or can i just draw my clipart just on procreate, i just want to draw and then sell them on etsy, please help, your advise will b appreciated
You don’t need to finish them on the laptop! You can do everything on your iPad 😁 I think some people do that because they’re used to features Photoshop has that Procreate may lack but it’s definitely NOT needed, so don’t worry about it! The reason they might finish on Illustrator is because on Illustrator they can turn the drawing into a vector drawing. You can also do this on the iPad on Affinity Designer or other vector apps if you need vector features but don’t want to use your computer. Hope this helped!
Great video! I cannot believe you edit your videos just on your iPad. Very impressive! Just downloaded procreate :) I’ve been kind of underwhelmed by adobe fresco and Photoshop on the iPad. From what I’ve seen, procreate looks so much better. Got a sub from me :)
Procreate gets better every year as they consistently update the app! I have also yet to try Clip Studio Paint, I hear it’s great. And thank you so much for the kind comments, really appreciate it :)
You can use all models of iPad to use Procreate. The amount of memory on the iPad and the size of the file change the number of layers you can use. If you work large format then it's important but if you don't typically use a lot of layers or you work on small files you can use the cheaper ipads. You can look at Procreate's FAQ and it will make it easier for you to decide the iPad you want :) I have an iPad Pro 11"
@@jessicatriana i'm really considering to switch to procreate and an ipad after 6 years of drawing with my laptop and Wacom intuos pro. Mostly because i'm disabled and constantly sitting at my desk is becoming too tiring plus i'm in the hospital a lot and an ipad would be very portables. My artwork tends to be quite big because i do a lot on the canvas and my canvas is quite big. Do you think the 256 gb would be good enough? Or should i save up a bite more and get something higher?
@@taranhartell2459 If portability is an issue for you I would definitely invest on an iPad, you're going to love the convenience! I think 256gb is fine and if it gets full you can just back up older artwork to create space for new ones :) However, the amount of layers you can use depend on the canvas size and the iPad model, so I'd recommend looking that up before you buy.
@@jessicatriana thank you for answering! Portability is definitely what i would love about it! Usually i place artwork on my drive and USB as soon as its finished anyway so that won't be a problem. I have read a bit more about layers but it doesn't seem like an issue as much as i thought it would be (I mostly work on the same layer anyway) 😆
@@kxmuna depends if you still need the laptop to do other type of work 😁 If we weren’t in the middle of COVID I’d say the easiest way to make your decision is to ask a friend who has the iPad to try it out and see if you like it
For me, I'm the opposite of what you discussed in the brushes section. I've never been able to get the same result and the same amount of control in procreate as photoshop. Maybe it's because I've used photoshop since I was about 9 (I wasn't spoiled lol, my dad used it for work and I used his ancient wacom tablet from when he was in college) until today where I'm now 21, but the brushes in procreate just don't work the same as photoshop and they just feel wrong to me (personally) in a way I can't fully explain. Something about the way procreate handles pressure sensitivity seems almost fake and artificial where photoshop feels like it would to actually draw with a pencil in terms of pressure sensitivity controlling opacity, size, etc. I could never get the look I wanted because it felt like the pressure I used only controlled the brush size, if that makes sense. I also cannot stand the layer limits (which I get why it's there, but it's still annoying and barrier that could be removed) and the way adjustment layers and such work. and the transform tool! no matter what I do, if I rotate anything in procreate it immediately goes fuzzy and I have to redraw the entire thing using the original rotated version as a guide. It's such a pain and feels like it takes away a big part of what makes digital art convenient, appealing, and more efficient than traditional paper and pencil. It has started to seem like procreate is only a good option when your style is the 2D textured and sketchy/intentionally messy/doodle-y that's super popular right now (and has been since procreate became widely used) and is just handcuffs for any other drawing styles. I could only ever get a very specific and 2D appearance to anything and not the painted, buttery, sketchy, and partially 3D I prefer, mainly because of how the brushes handle pressure sensitivity. Sorry for how long this comment is, it was just kind of brain vomit lol. your video is very informative and helpful, but I definitely recommend people to test it out in a store or something because it's an expensive and trendy switch to make that you may come to regret (like I did). My good ole' non-screen wacom intuos pro is still highly preferred for me and feels like I can do anything with it with no restrictions like the iPad with procreate has (which is ironic considering it's less than half the price of the iPad itself, not including procreate or the apple pencil). I guess my advice is that use what you feel you can fully achieve what you want to with, not what everyone is raving about and is the new tech that everyone's using. Sometimes the old fashioned classics are a better option all around, even if you loose some portability. Even comparing screen tablets for computers vs standard pen tablets... screen tablets are not inherently better. they have their flaws and weaknesses that pen tablets do better (needing power cables, higher tendency to hunch over your work, hand gets in the way of seeing what you're drawing, etc.) A lot of people don't even try pen tablets or give up immediately because of the steep but quick learning curve. It really doesn't take long to get used to, and is honestly better in a lot of ways (forces you to look straight at the screen in front of you which encourages better posture, not limited by the screen quality of the tablet, cheaper, less cables, hand is never covering/blocking what you're drawing, etc.) even if screen tablets seem fancier, better, more professional, etc. Pen tablets came first and are what a lot of amazing artists (professional or not) used and still use, but they're almost immediately dismissed now and it's starting to seem like beginners to digital art are going to think the only options are ipads or cintiqs, both of which are extremely expensive and inexcessable for a lot of people again, sorry this got so long. I'm curious if others have had the same experience as me or feel the same way? is procreate a downgrade from photoshop to anyone?
I also really dont understand why procreate is promoted by everyone to be "cheap" and cost nothing compared to photoshop because ipads are EXPENSIVE and required in order to use procreate, but most people already have a computer that can run photoshop, and drawing tablets start very very cheap and the more expensive ones are not needed at all. And if photoshop is too expensive (which I'm not saying photoshop itself isn't expensive, it definitely is and is overpriced), other computer programs exist that do almost the same thing but don't require a $1k iPad plus an expensive pen sold separately
@@sososleeepy Yeah your points are totally valid. The resizing loss of quality is soooo annoying, and adjustment layers are also not as flexible. They both have pros and cons, it's just a matter of choosing what you value the most :)
Hey, I need your help. So I’ve been seeing a lot of great art with procreate and I like photoshop however my pc is laggy. So I wanted to know, do you think I could use both? Or do you think I would abandon one for the other?
You can definitely use both, as procreate can export and open .psd files. However if your PC is laggy I think you’ll appreciate using Procreate and an iPad more because it’s super smooth. You can also try a free trial of Clip Studio Paint (works in both pc and iPad) it’s more similar to Photoshop than Procreate as it’s quite complex but it’s an app made for drawing (while Photoshop is geared towards photo)

Yeah exactly! Might not be the best for some typescript work. Hope the Galaxy Tab works well for you!

and you can animate!!

But I want it so badly :(
I've been drawing for a couple of years but I got so lazy to sit down at the table and start drawing...

Hey! Would be awesome if you could help me out :)
So, I was going to buy a display.
And there's always more things to do on the computer :)
I should also mention: Procreate is really intuitive and simple but Clip Studio Paint, Photoshop, and Affinity do have more features.
I've been meaning to try Affinity Photo! I might get it and see how it compares :)
But if you’re tight for money and you already have a good computer and Photoshop you’ll be able to make great work without an iPad :)
If you know anyone with a tablet or an iPad I’d recommend you ask them to try it out and see what you think of the experience in both!
@@jessicatriana Ok, cool! Thanks for the reply. I am tight on money, so I talked to my parents and I've decided a graphics tablet will work just fine for now.

Hey! Thanks for this video :) How much memory do I need for iPad? How much do you have? Want to start drawing on iPad too
You can use all models of iPad to use Procreate.

@@kxmuna depends if you still need the laptop to do other type of work 😁
If we weren’t in the middle of COVID I’d say the easiest way to make your decision is to ask a friend who has the iPad to try it out and see if you like it
For me, I'm the opposite of what you discussed in the brushes section.
Pen tablets came first and are what a lot of amazing artists (professional or not) used and still use, but they're almost immediately dismissed now and it's starting to seem like beginners to digital art are going to think the only options are ipads or cintiqs, both of which are extremely expensive and inexcessable for a lot of people
again, sorry this got so long.

Photoshop is making me so angry, i got it 2 days ago and it’s so laggy 😭
I’m planning on getting procreate soon
That sounds frustrating! Procreate is super smooth and not laggy at all 😁 You can also try the free trial of Clip Studio Paint and see if you like it! It’s more complex than Procreate and the interface is similar to Photoshop. I tried it recently and it’s a really good drawing software
@@jessicatriana ooo!! I will try both procreate and clip studio, thank you!
@@mdaok9505 no problem! ☺️
Humm what iPad you using tho “-“
I’m using the 2018 11” iPad Pro :)
@@jessicatriana Thank you✨
Best moment is 05:07 😂😂😂😂😂
Let me make it faster, the reason she switch is... procreate is more easily to use, nah, i can explain it in 10 seconds in comments, hehe...
Haha not just that but yes! One of the big reasons is that it’s intuitive to use
Ngehehehe...
But I must say that at last you supported photoshop.
No entendí :(
El resumen del video en español:
1. Desempeño: Mi computador era viejo y lento por eso Photoshop también era lento :( Comprar un computador nuevo seria más caro que comprar un iPad + Procreate. El iPad es mucho más rápido que mi computador y Procreate corría mejor!
2. Conveniencia: A parte de que mi computador no aguantaba Photoshop muy bien por lo del desempeño, era un fastidio tener que conectar la tablet al computador y prender todo, sentarme en la mesa… Con el iPad comenzó a dibujar todos los días porque es muy portátil: solo lo prendo y dibujo en la pantalla. Puedo dibujar en el sofá, parque, tren, donde sea;
3. Pantalla Táctil: con Procreate puedo hacer zoom, rotar el dibujo, y usar gestos para hacer y deshacer cosas, en vez de usar atajos en el teclado como lo hacía en Photoshop. Para mí esta es una manera más intuitiva de dibujar;
4. Procreate: me gustan más los pinceles y las texturas de Procreate, y compré in iPad solo para poder usarlo. Procreate es solamente dedicado al dibujo y por eso es más fácil de aprender que Photoshop. Photoshop sirve para editar fotografías y tiene muchas más funcionalidades pero ni todas son esenciales para quien dibuja;
Your just advertising iPads not procreate
Well I had to buy an iPad in order to use Procreate so that was part of it for me
hahah 'influenced'
Yeah Jessica and now here you are influencing the rest of us. Will we all drink the koolaid? I have to admit it's tempting but I will have to watch a few more influencers as it's not exactly an inexpensive koolaid to drink.
Haha I understand! It took me a while too so take your time 😁
Really helpful thank you🙏
No problem, glad it was helpful!
