One other quick thing to note - you can open any Fresco file in the iPhone version of Fresco and make edits, etc. and all layers, animation, etc. are preserved. Pretty cool to be able to move smoothly between iPad, Windows and iPhone with a single file if you need this kind of easy relationship with your files.
Although you can open PSD files in Procreate (and export them) it’s not the same as being able to work in the same file and have it automatically update when switching between the apps. It seems like a small difference but it’s a big deal when making edits on files for client projects.
I switched to Fresco a couple years ago and I love it specifically because I can create in vector and transfer to Illustrator. Most of the time, I'll draw cartoon figures in Fresco and then do type lockups and other design elements in Illustrator.
This video was exactly what I needed to see to make the jump to Fresco from Procreate. I was drawing the illustrations in Procreate, uploading the image to Google Drive, then opening Google Drive on my laptop, saving the image, THEN bringing it into Illustrator, vectorizing it using LiveTrace, and then continuing with the illustration in AI. As you can see, that is a LONG process and as you mentioned, the livetrace can be a bit wonky. So being able to draw in vector in Fresco, save it to my Creative Cloud, and hop on the computer to access it through CC in Illustrator is a total game changer. Thank you so much for sharing this much needed insight. You are THE man.
Same. I think when I tried Fresco when I got my ipad (2017) it just really didn't have all of the same features and I never went over to try it again. But after watching this video I've tried it some and I think I am going to use it for the final set of illustrations I have to make. I have a new proj, that is a continuation of an old project (2015) where I used Adobe Illustrator. I've been trying to use procreate because I get a more organic look but also have the stabilization. But I HATE HATE HATE how procreate aliases whenever you resize something. Whether it is bigger or smaller it ends up 💩. These fresco brushes are amazing. Thank you for the indepth review!
As of 7 Feb 2024 I came across Chris video during a search to find out what drawing software to use as currently doing Digital Imaging and Graphics as a university elective subject. So far finding this video very good for me to gather history and choose what platform to use to create vector images for my project. Chris is easily understood and I have taken note of his updated comment, which is good to see as often material is not updated, hence why I started my search as other notes directed me to Adobe Draw. Thank you for taking the time to inform others, it is most helpful.
I AM in the category of people who tried Fresco early on. I have used Procreate since 2016. You have convinced me to give Fresco another shot. Thanks!!
I've been using Kyle's brushes for a long time now and just recently discovered Fresco. I was stoked the first time I used the default brush, it really feels different considering I am an avid fan of Procreate for 2 years now. I am now trying Fresco more because of that - It might be personal but I feel the pencil strokes and feedback is way better than my procreate.
I use Fresco on my desktop PC w/a Wacom Cintiq Pro 32 and an Intuos Pro. Love the ability to quickly bounce between After Effects, Fresco, Illustrator, and Photoshop plus the 5-6 updates a year :) Drawing directly in vector saves a lot of steps and using Vector Trim (added in v1.6 back in 2020) REALLY helps my line work. P.S. I was at Wacom’s U.S. offices pre-Covid and was told it’s pronounced ‘wah come’.
Thanks for this video!I just started using Fresco again after having tried it out when it first came out. It's so much smoother and just leveled up in my opinion compared to procreate. The ability to draw in vector, and mix and match that with realistic drawing and painting tools, and the bucket fill....Overall, it's just easier. I would always run into weird glitches in procreate with the brushes. Like they would randomly cut out mid stroke and things, and I could never figure out what was wrong, if it was a setting I could fix or the app had a problem. But I'm not experiencing that with Fresco. I'm just loving it, it feels totally different, in a good way. Making more excited to draw/paint.
Great job! I go back and forth between Fresco and Procreate and as Fresco continues to add features I use it more and more. The ability to have Fresco files readily available regardless of what device I am using is huge - as is the ability to draw in vector form. Both are great drawing apps. For me, Fresco is gaining the upper hand. Also, the perspective drawing tools in Fresco are far superior to similar tools in Procreate and other drawing apps.
Awesome video and I love your illustration style. I've been a designer for over 25 years and as a left hander who mouses right handed I've bee looking for an effective way to sketch illustrations digitally. Vector was a must and never liked the idea of using a wacom tablet. I have been debating on purchasing an new iPad and using pro-create for a few years, but the lack of vector held me back. Looks like Fresco will be perfect for me. You've sold me!
The biggest draw for Fresco is how I can use every other Adobe tool with it pretty easily. I love the way the program simulates color mixing What I may end up doing is using Procreate or Photoshop for drawing, and Fresco for coloring? I'm newer to digital art so we'll see
The seamless integration into the Adobe suite is really great. It seems like an unnecessary step to draw in Procreate and color in Fresco. I think there’s a small adjustment period switching from one to the other, but after a few drawings either feels just as natural as the other.
I switched to fresco when I learned vector information. I'm writing a graphic memoir of how I used my health and fitness knowledge to stop my mother with mild dementia from forgetting me, and it worked. I use PS for the background pics and of my mother and me, Illustrator for some panels, InDesign to put it all together, and I draw other people with Fresco, depending on what they did. For example, an ER doctor told me that it is just what they do, when they gave my mother an anti-psychotic without my permission, causing more harm than good. I drew him as a robot. I’m almost finished with it. I like to point out to artists that the neuro tests make the elderly draw a cube with no reference or education on any art, and those assessments have no studies showing their efficacy. I agree with Kyle. I was ROTFL several times as well.
After watching this post a couple of weeks ago, I also switched to Adobe Fresco from Procreate. I’d never been comfortable with the brushes in Procreate and find that Fresco’s brushes are better, and the app itself is more flexible. Thanks!
You are the reason I started using Fresco. Still learning everything as I was an avid Procreate user. I think they both have their strengths...But I have been really enjoying Fresco!
@@chris-piascik Chris, I was wondering (can't remember if you mentioned it) about Photoshop brushes in Fresco, how well are they supported and do they function well in your experience?
@@WestonWoodfin that’s one of the benefits for me. Photoshop brushes work in Fresco. I’ve heard that there are some brushes that may have issues but I have yet to experience any.
if you only draw or paint i think procreate is enough.... for that reason also sometimes keeping it simple is a good reason to use procreate, but at the same time fresco is full of amazing tools, so yeah both are amazing and i want to use both
I think fresco will be good for me to try because I’ll be making vector files and animating the layers in after effects. If I save the files in the cloud and make changes in fresco, they should change automatically in AE. Like when I use Ai files. I tried Fresco when it came out, mainly for it’s watercolour brushes, but went back to procreate. Might be good to try it again
Awesome! Thank you for sharing. I was just about to buy procreate because the old reviews I saw about fresco made it seem inefficient compared to procreate. But now, watching your review, I realized Fresco is all I need which I already have as an Adobe CC premium user. Thank you!
I have been drawing on procreate for a few years now but after watching your videos I'm really excited to try fresco and explore that option more! I recently started learning about vectors and am hoping to turn my art into vectors so that it is of a better quality when I sell then.
Been using ps and AI for 25+ years About to get my first iPad pro and was leaning towards procreate because it seemed like everyone was using it (peer pressure anyone?!) But this video was exactly what I needed to see! Amazing news. Fresco sounds much more my thang. Thanks very much 😊
Hey! You can do your fills on procreate by setting the layer with your linework as a “reference layer”. It’s a bit hidden away but it’s in the menu when you tap a layer. I didn’t know Fresco did vectors though, that could be a game changer for me! As the illustrator app is too slow to draw in on my iPad. Good video 👏👏👏
@@chris-piascik like I said, it’s hidden away. I recognised it because it’s called that in Clip Studio Paint, which was my desktop go-to. Anyway it looks like it’s better in Fresco!
Was just about comment on the same thing too :D I totally agree with Chris about the paint bucket tool. Filling in colors in Procreate is a bit too tedious when there's a lot of tiny details to fill in.
I tried out Fresco when it first came out. I did not like it. I am currently sitting with my iPad and just downloaded Fresco again. I'm definitely giving it another try! Thanks for the great vid :)
@@chris-piascik I'm very impressed! Loving the double tap on the thing to get the eraser with the same brush. However, even though I turn up the smoothness of my brush in vector, it still looks a bit wonky at. Nit as smooth as I'd like :/
I've been a Procreate fan for years but after watching your videos on Fresco, I'm definitely going to attempt a switch...the compatibility with other Adobe apps sounds like a game changer. Your videos have been super helpful...thank you!
Thanks for the comparison, very helpful! I am just starting out designing on iPad (before creating everything on iMac) and used the Adobe Illustrator for that. I encountered some limitations, so I bought Procreate because everyone seams to be using that nowadays.... I also downloaded Fresco and Photoshop for iPad. Then I made the same (simple) project in all 4 apps: Procreate, Illustrator for iPad, Photoshop for iPad, and Adobe Fresco, so I could compare. I liked Fresco best for this testproject. A downside was that I had to use a lot more layers in Fresco than in Procreate (because of the separation of vector layers and pixel layers) and that was a bit overwhelming. I will definitely watch more of your videos to learn more, you're doing great, love your down to earth mentality, made me laugh a couple of times. Thanks!
Thanks so much Monique! For my work I’m usually either working specifically in vector or raster. I don’t usually find a need to mix them in one file. I generally just use the vector brushes if I have to deliver a project in vector format, or if I’m making something that else that would benefit from being vector.
I went straight to Fresco as I got my first ipad. I have Procreate, and its cool. Love what I see others doing it. But for my work flow/style, Fresco is gold. Thanks for the break down!
Nice. They’re both similar, and can both be customized to feel the same within brushes, but the vector and motion in Fresco definitely pushes it ahead. That said, this is an older video and both apps have been updated since. I still feel the same though!
Will be trying Fresco out for sure. I run into the limited layers in Procreate a lot and also vectorize my illustrations in Illustrator currently, so those two features alone sound great.
This is really helpful. I bought an ipad last year to make logos for my business and my fiances business, but I'm basically computer illiterate... I have spent the last 10 years of my adult life without a computer. All of my work was done on paper, and procreate was a huge step in the right direction. But my logos were grainy. And I was sick of constantly having to start over from stratch because the quality would diminish with modifications I made. I had no idea there were other drawing programs, and your insight has given me a lot to think about!! Thank you!
I’m in the middle of transitioning to Fresco from Procreate. I’ve installed pretty much every conceivable painting program on Windows and all of them lag on my i5 rtx2060 32gb pc at a canvas size or 6000x4800 at 300dpi, except Fresco. I’ve been making most of my art in procreate because it has no brush lag on a canvas that size, but once I figured out that there is no brush lag in Windows Fresco, I installed it on my iPad and have been falling in love with it. The ability to switch between working on the same document on PC and then being able to work on that same document on iPad without having to do some janky exporting psd files in procreate and transferring to my PC is a game changer to me. If I feel like sitting at my PC and working with my 24” XP-PEN monitor, I can do that. If I feel like switching to the couch and working on that same file on my iPad, I can do that.
Thanks for the review! I’m a graphic designer who used to draw a lot but is one skill that hasn’t been required vs others. I’ve always been on the look out for a god drawing app and I honestly love the compatibility with fresco and other Adobe programs!
Hey, I'm looking to get an iPad and step up my game. I've been using Fresco on my phone and I love it. The vector tools are a major game changer. Thanks for the reassurance that it's the way to go.
I started with Procreate, but got really fed up with the layer limit. So now I use Fresco and it's so versatile. Great video, really entertaining and informative.
Definitely gonna give fresco a second chance. It couldn't hold a candle to procreate early on. I'm a tattoo artist and illustrator. Procreate was just the easier more full featured app for me
Excellent video .... I really liked the way you explained everything clearly. I got a surface pro as a gift and started drawing on fresco and I felt so dump because everyone is using iPad and procreate and I'm stuck with those two but your video came at the right time to clear things out for me I never used procreate btw. Thank you so much 👍👍
Hmm, you've convinced me to try the free Fresco version. I currently use Procreate 90% of the time and illustrator the other times. Procreate definitely has some things that i'm not a fan of. When you mentioned having to click and drag the color swatch every time you want to fill something in, I felt validated lmao. i'm going to give it a shot, thanks!
You could use recolor for bucket tool in procreate. To change the action buttons, tap and hold with the pencil on any button. A whole list of actions will appear, in alphabetical order. Scroll to find the Recolor action, and select it.
thanks Chris! I just finished a book project with procreate and recently moved over to fresco, and have been enjoying fresco more and more. I used fresco when it started and thought procreate was easy to jump in and share collaborative edits. BUT now, I like fresco, and will prob use for my next project!
Long press on your layer icons and you’ll see quite a few more options than just setting the layer to Reference. Such as Clipping Mask, Alpha Lock, and Mask.
Great review. As you mentioned I fall into the category that tried it in the beginning and wasen´t impressed so I will give it another go. Love your subtle humor 👍🏻
Definitely convinced me to take a look. I was only generally aware of it, had no idea it did vector or motion graphics stuff... Which just so happen to be two thing I want to add more of to my illustration portfolio!
I've been using procreate for a while, but this video and the comments definitely have convinced me to at least check out Fresco. Also, your illustrations are so cool, I love them. :D
I agree the smoothing tool in Fresco is hard to get used to! And I agree of your pros of procreate! I think Fresco is taking notes and will have some updates for us sooner than we think.
Great video! Will definitely be giving Fresco another go. Procreate is great for sketching but translating that sketch into vector is a bit of a pain. Love your style! Seconding Kyle about laughing out loud several times while watching. I also nodded in agreement a lot. :) Subscribed. Liked. And, I think this is my first ever comment on any RUclips video. (You are not alone having a Procreate gallery full of 'untitled artwork'.)
Just tried Fresco, after being learning about Procreate for about six months. The way the brushes feel in Fresco seems more natural. Also, to use Fresco with Capture is helpful with patterns. More problematic to move elements into place accurately with Procreate; even with snapping and magnetics there is often a gap.
Great video, I really appreciate your in depth comparison! I started with Fresco without having tried Procreate, and I absolutely love the versatility when it comes to Layerings and creating Vector drawings.
Excellent review. Thank you for sharing this. I've been a Procreate user for a few years and have been trying out Fresco more & more lately, and liking it, especially since Adobe changed their pricing on it to $10/yr from $10/mo. I also, really like the file/backup management of Fresco, and the live brushes. But, I have one correction to what you said, regarding "unlimited layers". And that is, since all devices (phones, tablets, laptops, etc.) have a *limited* amount of memory, no application can realistically allow an unlimited number of "things", such as layers, undo's, canvas size, etc. Instead, there are two kinds of applications, those that notify you of memory limitations, and those that don't. Procreate does (in a limited way, as layers -- no pun intended), but most other art apps, including Fresco, don't. Thank you again for the review. Regards.
Glad you found it useful! That’s a fair correction regarding the layer situation. But I think for normal use Procreate is fairly aggressive with how much they limit layers on some set ups.
I think this video has been the final push I needed to get myself an iPad, thank you, this app seems super cool, and knowing I already have it when I buy the thing is even better ^^
Just to bring to your attention, there actually IS a paint bucket in Procreate. What you do is you drag the little circle with whatever color you have to where you want to fill and then you fill that area. It's not always as accurate as Fresco, but I just wanted to let you know that it exists. But what do I know? 🤷♂ edit: wait you already know that. oops
To simulate the fill function of adobe You can actually tap a line work, tap 'reference' and then make a new layer and if you start folling colors, do the same thing
Yeah, I’ve since heard that’s a feature now, I don’t really use Procreate anymore so I haven’t had a chance to try it out. It’s cool you can do that though! Maybe someday I’ll update this video, it was one of my first.
Wow! I had tapped out of Adobe Fresco a while back. I am truly impressed with the updates to the app. This might be the smoothest vector drawing experience I have ever had on an iPad app (didn't think they would be able to top Vectornator).
I'm a fan of illustrator with the mouse. But this year I have proposed to use the iPad more. I've never liked how procreate looks when I zoom in 😅. I used fresco when the logo was green and I didn't like it, I thought it was also pixel because I'm a vector freak. I liked this video a lot, I'm starting to make animated texts and being able to group the animations is excellent!!! Awesome videos keep it up. Sorry if you don't understand something, I put the text in translate. Greetings from Puerto Rico, fan of your work. I hope to learn more from your videos.
Oh I just discovered AF and I’m excited! I’m currently using procreate and still affinity designer, can’t afford the upgrade. I’m excited and may just skip to learning AF.
Each has its strengths and weaknesses. Personally a prefer Procreate clean and intuitive interface - it’s a drawing and illustration app, and does it very well. Fresco on the other hand tries to do a lot in the same diminute area interface which feels, at times, a little cluttered. Off course you have to consider the business model behind each app and if it justifies the investment upfront. If you can have both it would the best of both worlds. Cheers.
Procreate does have the ability to fill color. You can drag and drop then it allows you to “ continue filling “ and select other shapes. What I love about Procreate is the price. I paid $10 for Procreate and $20 for Procreate Dreams, all updates are free. Fresco is a subscription based app costing $9.99 a month. Oh, you can also convert your line art into a reference layer and color fill under it. I’m no professional, I just love art and watching artsist create. For me, Procreate has been amazing and drawing in it is my soul therapy. ❤
Thanks for a really detailed video it's really difficult when starting out digital on what app and device to actually start with and then finalise with
You’re welcome. I meant to add more detail- I am a wannabe artist, I just haven’t given it the time but hope to, now. I have fresco & procreate. I get stuck on so many of the tools (like you were saying you can’t figure out the pens!) so I can’t trust myself to determine which of the two is better. Your explanation wiped away the feeling that I might be wasting time on Fresco when I should be on procreate. I don’t know why I chose fresco but I’m sticking w it now. That is a distracting “what if” you took away. Whew!
I’m so glad I could help with that! Both apps are great. But I do believe Fresco is the better choice. I do nearly all of my work in Fresco, both client and personal.
Chris- Great video for helping me weigh my options. I still have to noodle with Fresco more to see about moving from Procreate for my native creative platform. Seeing as I am needing more vector-enabled for my work, I just wonder if my work in Procreate and exporting as PSD (while investing time into learning Photoshop to vectorize) is ultimately where I want to head. Again, appreciate your time and thoughts in the above video!
new subscriber, great and super super helpful video! I have never been in love with Procreate due tot he fact its not vector based. I used to really like Adobe Draw but now i'm getting into Fresco. Great work, thank you
Thanks so much Neil! I used a Adobe Draw for a long time before Fresco was released. I liked it a lot too, but now that I’ve spent so much time in Fresco I’ve realized it’s everything Draw was plus a ton more. Glad you found the video helpful!
RUclips just does his magic I'm looking to practice more illustration but since work on Photoshop on a totally different screen layout when I get the chance to draw I already feel exhausted when set up for it, gotta install Fresco and give it a run would be awesome have a single software just for the drawing tablet and the excitement of learning a new software! thanks!
Thanks for making and sharing this. Fresco seems to be what I have been looking for having tried Procreate but not found the brush type that I was looking for. Love the size and opacity sliders in Procreate, wish Fresco had this. Seems more fiddly.
Glad you found it helpful! The size and opacity sliders are in fresco too. When your on a brush the little menu that pops up on the left has those settings.
@@chris-piascik In fact @ManicMiner, in the little menu that pops up, there are three ways to interact with the size and opacity. 1. Put your finger on the button and immediately slide up and down to change the value. 2. Tap the button to view a slider. 3. Hold your finger on the button and then enter a value on a numeric keypad.
Great Video Chris!!!! Fresco can do a lot of things I didn't know!!! Just a little correction: Fresco works on any PC that has pen compatibility. I'm using it right now with an Asus 2 in 1.
Just found you thanks to creativepeptalk podcast! So nice to see you have this amazing content in youtube too. You convinced me to give it a try to adobe fresco.
@@chris-piascik I found this video through Instagram ads, so just wanted to let you know it worked! However, I wish it had a clickable link. It only gave me an option to message you. So I just searched the title on RUclips instead.
@@sketchperez thanks for letting me know. When I boosted the post it was on Facebook and I didn’t know they’d run it on Instagram like that. Glad you found it regardless!
I was one of those that tried Fresco early on and soon cast it aside, recently I had another look and was surprised, I have the photographer bundle so have cloud storage already and the free version is good enough combined with photoshop. I think I noticed in Fresco that I had some brushes I created in my library in the creative cloud and they were available in Fresco too, so even the free version you are able to add some brushes.
Not trying to beat you up, but the reference layer feature actually exists in Procreate, I know it was in there back in 2020 when I was working on a web comic. I actually used Procreate specifically for all my flats, and then did some additional texture work in Affinity Photo afterward.
Yeah, my bad about that one. It actually gets pointed out here in the comments a lot. It got added after I had been regularly using it and didn’t realize. I’m planning on making an updated version of this eventually. It’s just tricky because both apps are always updating. It does seem like the 2 big reasons for me aren’t likely to change, and that’s Fresco’s vector ability, and advanced motion features.
Hi! Great video! I've been using Procreate for more than 3 years now, I also switched from using a Wacom + Photoshop. I am a BRUSH crazy (I teach how to make brushes in my channel) and is my main reason for using Procreate. THOUGH, you make an important point! and is the ability of obtaining the vector files from it. I very much h*te illustrator in the iPad since I'm pretty fast already with the computer version for many years now, but I've been looking for a good app for the iPad. I have been using Vectonator but when you mentioned Fresco is like having both in one intrigued me and made me watch and listen the whole video. The animation also looks promising, In procreate it is still very limited, what you show of Fresco makes sense since they use vectors, and looks similar to what I create with After Effects. I think there is more potential there. Definitely gotta try it. Thanks!
Thank you so much for this recommendation. I have been trying to figure out which program would work best for my workflow, and considering how much I use Photoshop to refine drawings, I'm definitely giving Fresco a try!
Glad it was helpful! That said, this video is pretty old and a bit outdated. Since it was a popular one I decided to redo it: ruclips.net/video/cqy8DVj-VYc/видео.html
I'm so glad I didn't jump on the Procreate boat in the first place! When you mentioned of backup files, my heart sank for you. I'm sure you had nightmares retrieving the files. I'm not going through that. LOL
Loved this! I giggled out loud (GOL?) a few times. Personally, I jumped from Procreate to Fresco and back to Procreate to use a pencil brush set that I bought. But NOW that you've hyped up a few of the features on Fresco, I may jump back again. I didn't realize that you could go from Fresco to Photoshop and back to Fresco and so on and so on. And I haven't dabbled much in the Vector brushes, but now I'm curious. Looks like I have some more playing around to do!
Love, love your great discussion comparing the virtues/detractions between Adobe Fresco and Procreate. It was superbly insightful, perfectly paced, and enjoyable to watch. Consider me a new "fanboy." I hadn't given Fresco much thought because of my long-ago first impressions. But having listened to your piece, I'm cranking up Creative Cloud to download the app after I finish this message. BTW, your illustrations are beautiful and I love walking through them like I used to walk through the zoo; every turn around the corner presents a surprise or new revelation. So, for me, your work is a new, wonder-filled place to park my brain and stroll like the kid I once was.
great video chris. your comparison totally helped me. definitely going to check out fresco… animation options and vector without having to redraw in another program are huge pluses. just wondering if you have tried affinity designer on ipad as another option since it is also a one time cost and it switches between vector and pixels. you can use also use it on a computer. thanks for your insights and subscribed 😎
Thanks! Glad you found it helpful! I haven’t tried Affinity. To be honest, I’m not that interested because the integration into the Creative Cloud suite of programs that I use regularly makes Fresco really seamless and convenient for me. That said, maybe I’ll have to try Affinity just for scientific purposes, lol.
I like your video and humor! +1 sub! I am one that tries Fresco when it first came out and didn’t like it much… after watching this, I’m gonna download and give it another shot. Thanks for the info!
Loved it, thank you soooo much for the info you shared here. I am new to your channel. Just happened to find it when I was checking procreate animation on youtube. I found you funny. I hit like and subscribed. Looking forward to watching more of your videos and the new videos you'd be creating too!
i'm pretty sure i'm not doing anything to back up my Procreate files, but when i switched iPads all my work was there when i opened the app and I was prepared to actually have to save and drop them to the new one.
Well I’m glad that worked out for you! It must have been saved through iCloud. I tend to set up my new iPads fresh as opposed to transferring a ton of stuff I’m no longer using.
This video is a bit outdated, check out the updated version here! ruclips.net/video/cqy8DVj-VYc/видео.htmlsi=KWn204RZ_snv-Ktn
It may be outdated but it was still incredibly helpful. thank you!
Thanks!!
Oh that’s super cool. I didn’t realize there was an iPhone version.
That's one of the reasons I'm currently using Fresco. For personal hobby. ☝🏻
This! It’s SO helpful!!
Procreate does that with psd files.
Nice, it's great to be able to have a workflow between the different apps.
So glad it was helpful for you! I know that workflow all too well!
Ah yeah, it's gotten so much better!
Kyle’s brushes are amazing. I think the pencil strokes and feedback is great in both apps. I bet different brushes likely contribute to how it reacts.
I use Fresco on my desktop PC w/a Wacom Cintiq Pro 32 and an Intuos Pro. Love the ability to quickly bounce between After Effects, Fresco, Illustrator, and Photoshop plus the 5-6 updates a year :)
Drawing directly in vector saves a lot of steps and using Vector Trim (added in v1.6 back in 2020) REALLY helps my line work.
P.S. I was at Wacom’s U.S. offices pre-Covid and was told it’s pronounced ‘wah come’.
I always forget you can use Fresco as a desktop app on Windows-that's pretty cool. Love that vector trim!
Thanks for the comment!
Glad you liked the video! Fresco is updated so often, it's gotten amazing.
Thanks! I agree, they're both great apps.
Thanks! Glad you liked the video. Also glad I may have provided a solution!
The biggest draw for Fresco is how I can use every other Adobe tool with it pretty easily. I love the way the program simulates color mixing
What I may end up doing is using Procreate or Photoshop for drawing, and Fresco for coloring?
Sounds like an amazing project! Thank you for the comment!
i have both, didn't vibe w procreate, tried fresco after adobe draw, fell in love, hardcore fan since.
I love how in depth you got with this topic. Thanks so much for diving deep!
Haha thanks! I can get a little nerdy sometimes.
After watching this post a couple of weeks ago, I also switched to Adobe Fresco from Procreate. I’d never been comfortable with the brushes in Procreate and find that Fresco’s brushes are better, and the app itself is more flexible. Thanks!
Glad this was helpful!
You are the reason I started using Fresco. Still learning everything as I was an avid Procreate user. I think they both have their strengths...But I have been really enjoying Fresco!
They are both great for sure. Fresco just has some stuff that makes it a little better for me.
@@chris-piascik that’s actually a huge plus. Thanks Chris!
if you only draw or paint i think procreate is enough.... for that reason also sometimes keeping it simple is a good reason to use procreate, but at the same time fresco is full of amazing tools, so yeah both are amazing and i want to use both
I think they’re both great apps. I worked in Procreate for a ton of personal and client work.
Fresco has gotten so much better since it launched, they've been updating it like crazy.
Awesome! Thank you for sharing. I was just about to buy procreate because the old reviews I saw about fresco made it seem inefficient compared to procreate. But now, watching your review, I realized Fresco is all I need which I already have as an Adobe CC premium user. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful! I think those must be reviews about Fresco when it was first launched. It's updated every 4-6 weeks.
I have been drawing on procreate for a few years now but after watching your videos I'm really excited to try fresco and explore that option more! I recently started learning about vectors and am hoping to turn my art into vectors so that it is of a better quality when I sell then.
Great to hear!
Been using ps and AI for 25+ years
About to get my first iPad pro and was leaning towards procreate because it seemed like everyone was using it (peer pressure anyone?!) But this video was exactly what I needed to see! Amazing news. Fresco sounds much more my thang. Thanks very much 😊
Glad I could help! Procreate is great, I just prefer Fresco. I have tons of new/better Fresco videos on my channel, this is an oldie.
Thanks! I didn’t realize Procreate had that feature too. Whoops!
@joel ebsworth I actually haven’t played around with illustrator on the iPad yet.
@joel ebsworth I’m not sure! I’m sure they’ll be working on it off the back of how good it is on Fresco!
I tried out Fresco when it first came out. I did not like it. I am currently sitting with my iPad and just downloaded Fresco again. I'm definitely giving it another try! Thanks for the great vid :)
Cool, I’m sure you’ll be impressed with how much better it’s gotten!
@@chris-piascik I'm very impressed! Loving the double tap on the thing to get the eraser with the same brush. However, even though I turn up the smoothness of my brush in vector, it still looks a bit wonky at. Nit as smooth as I'd like :/
Hmm, maybe try adjusting the shape dynamics in the brush settings so it’s not so high. That can sometimes make lines look less smooth.
@@chris-piascik I'll take a look at it. Thanks!
Thanks for making this, can't wait to try Fresco! Love your work dude!
Thanks so much! Have fun playing around with Fresco!
I've been a Procreate fan for years but after watching your videos on Fresco, I'm definitely going to attempt a switch...the compatibility with other Adobe apps sounds like a game changer. Your videos have been super helpful...thank you!
Glad I could help!
Ahh yeah, should save you some time!
Thank you!
Glad this was helpful!!
Ah that’s great!
Thanks for the review! I’m a graphic designer who used to draw a lot but is one skill that hasn’t been required vs others. I’ve always been on the look out for a god drawing app and I honestly love the compatibility with fresco and other Adobe programs!
Glad you found it useful Nathan! Thanks for the comment!
I’m starting to like fresco because of the vector brushes
It's a really great feature. I love being able to draw naturally and have it still be vector.
Hey, I'm looking to get an iPad and step up my game. I've been using Fresco on my phone and I love it. The vector tools are a major game changer. Thanks for the reassurance that it's the way to go.
Cool Will! Glad this was helpful!
I started with Procreate, but got really fed up with the layer limit. So now I use Fresco and it's so versatile. Great video, really entertaining and informative.
Thank you! Glad you liked it.
The info about changing speed of animation of paths with just drawing was gold!! Thank you!
Glad you found that helpful! Such a cool feature!
Definitely gonna give fresco a second chance. It couldn't hold a candle to procreate early on. I'm a tattoo artist and illustrator. Procreate was just the easier more full featured app for me
It’s definitely grown a ton since it first launched, they’re adding new features every 6 weeks from what I hear.
Excellent video .... I really liked the way you explained everything clearly. I got a surface pro as a gift and started drawing on fresco and I felt so dump because everyone is using iPad and procreate and I'm stuck with those two but your video came at the right time to clear things out for me I never used procreate btw. Thank you so much 👍👍
Happy to help! Procreate is a solid app but you’re certainly not missing anything!
one thing Adobe Fresco is missing right now is bezier points on the vector strokes. I'm guessing Adobe will add that in at some point. nice video!
I'm not sure I'd use bezier curves much in my work, but I can certainly see how that would be useful to some. Glad you liked the video!
Glad you're here Chris. I found you via rollerblading, am also an artist, and now am stoked you're on YT.
Awesome, thanks so much!
Thanks for the comment Cat! I think you’ll like Fresco!
You could use recolor for bucket tool in procreate.
To change the action buttons, tap and hold with the pencil on any button. A whole list of actions will appear, in alphabetical order. Scroll to find the Recolor action, and select it.
👍
thanks Chris! I just finished a book project with procreate and recently moved over to fresco, and have been enjoying fresco more and more. I used fresco when it started and thought procreate was easy to jump in and share collaborative edits. BUT now, I like fresco, and will prob use for my next project!
They're both great apps! I imagine for the book process the ability to go back and forth with other CC apps would make Fresco more appealing.
Ive been struggling to figure out my workflow and this was refreshing. Thank you for sharing! Love your work!
Glad it was helpful!
Long press on your layer icons and you’ll see quite a few more options than just setting the layer to Reference. Such as Clipping Mask, Alpha Lock, and Mask.
Thanks for the tip.
Great review. As you mentioned I fall into the category that tried it in the beginning and wasen´t impressed so I will give it another go. Love your subtle humor 👍🏻
Glad you enjoyed it!! Thank you!
Definitely convinced me to take a look. I was only generally aware of it, had no idea it did vector or motion graphics stuff... Which just so happen to be two thing I want to add more of to my illustration portfolio!
this video is great!!! thanks for sharing all of this information--- and being so thorough. I'll definitely be checking out more of your videos
Thanks! So glad you found it helpful!
I've been using procreate for a while, but this video and the comments definitely have convinced me to at least check out Fresco. Also, your illustrations are so cool, I love them. :D
Thank you so much!
I agree the smoothing tool in Fresco is hard to get used to! And I agree of your pros of procreate! I think Fresco is taking notes and will have some updates for us sooner than we think.
I think I’ve adapted to the smoothing. Once they add the snapping shapes I’ll be super happy. They’re definitely updating all the time 🤞
Fresco is updated every 4-6 weeks!
Thanks so much!!! I’m so honored to be receiving your first comment!
Oh cool, I agree capture is great.
I love your work Chris. Thanks for this unbiased review. Look forward to seeing more here (especially process videos : P )
Thanks so much! Process videos are in the works!
Great video, I really appreciate your in depth comparison! I started with Fresco without having tried Procreate, and I absolutely love the versatility when it comes to Layerings and creating Vector drawings.
Thanks! Glad you liked it!
I appreciate this compassion on these apps I now am going to try Fresco
Thanks! Glad you found it informative.0
But I think for normal use Procreate is fairly aggressive with how much they limit layers on some set ups.
i use autodesk sketchbook… never fell in love with procreate. will look at fresco!
Cool, I’ve never tried that one.
I think this video has been the final push I needed to get myself an iPad, thank you, this app seems super cool, and knowing I already have it when I buy the thing is even better ^^
Oh nice! I think you’ll like it!
I like CSP EX and Procreate but I always enjoy learning new things. Keep myself flexible.
Thanks for sharing!
Just to bring to your attention, there actually IS a paint bucket in Procreate. What you do is you drag the little circle with whatever color you have to where you want to fill and then you fill that area. It's not always as accurate as Fresco, but I just wanted to let you know that it exists.
But what do I know? 🤷♂
edit: wait you already know that. oops
Hah no worrries! I did miss a few things on this video. I need to make an updated version. There’s also been a bunch of new features added to Fresco.
I love your humor. Great video! I already have CC and didn’t even know this existed. Thank You!🙏👍 I’m in!
Thanks Tyler!
I appreciate your straight forward approach to making videos.
Thanks for your knowledge
Thank you!
You've convinced me to try Fresco again, it's been a couple of years. Great video! ❤
Cool! Thanks for letting me know!
Wow! I had tapped out of Adobe Fresco a while back. I am truly impressed with the updates to the app. This might be the smoothest vector drawing experience I have ever had on an iPad app (didn't think they would be able to top Vectornator).
Yeah, it’s gotten so much better since I made this video too!
Thank you so much for your insight. I will give Fresco a try.
Glad you found it informative! I'm sure you'll like it.
Thanks so much! I'm happy to hear you liked the video.
Cheers.
Thanks for your comment. I think they're both great.
Yeah this video is old and bit outdated. I just made a new one here (also Fresco is 9.99 per year, not month)

@@chris-piascik oh, thank you, I obviously didn’t read it correctly….that’s me, always rushing the read…lol
Thanks for a really detailed video it's really difficult when starting out digital on what app and device to actually start with and then finalise with
Glad it was helpful!
Great video and explanations. I'm a recent Fresco / Ipad user, so this was very useful for me.
Thanks! Glad you found it useful!
You are my new favorite art channel, you are hilarious. But also super informative, your tips are helpful to me. Will keep watching!
Wow, thank you! ☺️
Glad you found it useful! It is nice to be able to draw directly in vector.
new subscriber, great and super super helpful video!
RUclips just does his magic I'm looking to practice more illustration but since work on Photoshop on a totally different screen layout when I get the chance to draw I already feel exhausted when set up for it, gotta install Fresco and give it a run would be awesome have a single software just for the drawing tablet and the excitement of learning a new software! thanks!
Glad you found this useful!
I like how you or your editor puts dialogue in quotations to emphasize the point
Hah thanks, I’m not at the level where I can justify an editor.
Great Video Chris!!!! Fresco can do a lot of things I didn't know!!! Just a little correction: Fresco works on any PC that has pen compatibility. I'm using it right now with an Asus 2 in 1.
So cool! Just got an Ipad and started playing with fresco loving it!!
Thanks! And thanks for the tip about windows compatibility, I have next to know experience there!
I really like the fact that the vector art can be done in Fresco.
Just found you thanks to creativepeptalk podcast! So nice to see you have this amazing content in youtube too.
You convinced me to give it a try to adobe fresco.
Oh cool, thanks! Was it a recent episode? I’m slightly behind. Or was it my interview years ago?
Man, you are VERY thorough! I am an avid procreate user, but I do have creative cloud, so I'm definitely going to be trying Fresco out!
Haha thanks! I kept feeling like I was leaving things out!
I use CLIP STUDIO PAINT, but I do enjoy being introduced to any new art programs!
Cool, I haven't tried that one yet.
I thought Fresco came with the photoshop bundle? Maybe I’m wrong…
Great video bro! Keep it up! Im In illustrator macbook rn goin to invest in a ipad real soon
Thanks so much!
Thanks!
Cool thanks for sharing! I think you’ll enjoy Fresco, the motion features really are amazing.
Thank you so much for this recommendation. I have been trying to figure out which program would work best for my workflow, and considering how much I use Photoshop to refine drawings, I'm definitely giving Fresco a try!
Glad this was helpful! This is actually an old video. There’s a pinned comment with a more recent updated version with better info.
Just getting started with creating on an iPad. This video was so helpful! Thanks!
Glad it was helpful! That said, this video is pretty old and a bit outdated. Since it was a popular one I decided to redo it:

I'm so glad I didn't jump on the Procreate boat in the first place! When you mentioned of backup files, my heart sank for you. I'm sure you had nightmares retrieving the files. I'm not going through that. LOL
Hah it definitely was a nightmare. I’ve since found out there is a way to turn on back in iCloud though. Just wish I did that beforehand!
Thanks so much! Also love to hear that you GOL'd!
GOL should totally be a thing now.
Thanks you so much, I really appreciate your kind thoughtful response! Glad my work resonated with you and the video was useful!
@@chris-piascik Yes, Sir! Also purchased your Blockasscik font to support your efforts.
Oh, thanks!!
great video chris. your comparison totally helped me. definitely going to check out fresco… animation options and vector without having to redraw in another program are huge pluses.
just wondering if you have tried affinity designer on ipad as another option since it is also a one time cost and it switches between vector and pixels. you can use also use it on a computer.
thanks for your insights and subscribed 😎
I just added fresco to my iPad. I have the Adobe creative cloud because I’m an older student. I like your videos.
Cool, thanks! Glad you like them!!
I just might give Fresco a second chance, great video Chris, thank you for sharing your knowledge !
Glad you found it helpful!
I like your video and humor! +1 sub!
I am one that tries Fresco when it first came out and didn’t like it much… after watching this, I’m gonna download and give it another shot. Thanks for the info!
Thanks so much! Happy the info was helpful!
Great video! I recently have been using Adobe Fresco more after years of using procreate. Like button smashed!
Thanks for the smash! Glad you liked the video!
Loved it, thank you soooo much for the info you shared here.
I am new to your channel. Just happened to find it when I was checking procreate animation on youtube.
I found you funny. I hit like and subscribed. Looking forward to watching more of your videos and the new videos you'd be creating too!
Thank you so much! This was an early video for me and I feel like I’ve improved quite a bit with the newer ones, I hope you like them!
This was sooo helpful as a new iPad drawer but graphic designer so I know all Adobe 👍
Great to hear! Thank you!
i'm pretty sure i'm not doing anything to back up my Procreate files, but when i switched iPads all my work was there when i opened the app and I was prepared to actually have to save and drop them to the new one.
Well I’m glad that worked out for you! It must have been saved through iCloud. I tend to set up my new iPads fresh as opposed to transferring a ton of stuff I’m no longer using.
