  • As a professional illustrator that has worked with clients like Cartoon Network, Nike, Google, and countless others-I do the majority of my work in Adobe Fresco. Want to know why I prefer it over the seemingly more popular iPad drawing app, Procreate? If so, this is the video for you.
Cliff notes: Adobe Fresco incorporates Vector and Raster workflows, it has AMAZING and easy to use motion features far beyond what you can do in Procreate (and in some ways Procreate Dreams) + the Creative Cloud integration makes my workflow with client projects so simple.
There's a bunch of other stuff too, like multicolor swatches, live brushes, auto-color palettes and perspective grids and MORE.

I use both Procreate and Fresco. It's a bit of an awkward workflow, but I like the quickness of Procreate for sketches. It's easy to just pull up a canvas and sketch out an idea in Procreate. I'm probably just more used to the layout, but the interface is really easy to use for drawing. I'll then save the file as a pdf and send it to Fresco where I'll use Vector brushes to ink it. When I want to do my best line work though I use Clip Studio Paint. Its brush engine is just superior to any other program I've used. For commercial stuff I always finish it in CSP, and if it needs to be vectorized, I'll do an image trace of my line work.

    • @GodisGood941

So would you say that its impossible to get the same level of quality in procreate vs csp or fresco?

    • @zendragon6
      @zendragon6 4 месяца назад +11

@@GodisGood941 not at all. I think they each have their advantages. I like the modifier tool in Fresco. It makes a lot of sense, especially for Vector work. I like CSP's brush engine the best. It feels the most natural to how I draw and ink. But I primarily do graphic style ink work. For painterly work, I haven't really explored the differences between the three of them to make a judgement. But Procreate is by far the easiest "get out of your way and just draw/paint" interface between the three of them. I will say, the layers limitation can be annoying, where CSP handles many more layers without issue. For a very large piece for print, CSP or Fresco are going to be much better due to the lesser limitations and the ability to scale vectors.

Fresco is very good for more professional stuff because of it's connection to the Adobe CC. You should really do a Adobe Fresco/Illustrator class from zero to hero type thing. I know I'd buy it from your website. Awesome video !!!

I never used Procreate until recently beccause I just got an iPad 10th gen, last one was 1st gen iPad Mini. But these days I used Photoshop for sketch and Illustrator to clean up, then used Clip Pro Paint for the razter and vector combination and now I learning Freco can do this too, it could speed up my productive.

I'm going to try Fresco; you had me at the animation features. I started in Procreate and often struggled with adding little things in the background. It was unsatisfying, and I believe it hindered my creative potential due to the awkwardness of including elements afterward. I was excited about Dreams, but my workflow heavily relies on reference layers and the selection tool, making my first experience challenging. Also, managing the timeline and moving multiple elements is something I'm struggling with. Perhaps with future updates, I'll revisit Dreams, as the features in your videos align with what I'm currently seeking for smaller animations. So thanks!

Other than Procreate I love ArtStudio Pro. It has a lot of the stuff Procreate is missing like adjustment layers. You can import .abr brushes and unlike in Procreate the brushes work like they’re supposed to. Also ArtStudio Pro’s new pigment engine allows you to paint like you would in real life, mixing different colors together to make new ones.

    • @chris-piascik

I'll be giving it a whirl for painting, but also I think it'll be fun to try out some smaller animations. Maybe do something small for a title card in a video here and there. Great review! Folks got so much emotion over an app?! I'm a designer/animator 1/3 Branding, 1/3 illustration, 1/3 animation. I never rocked with Procreate, as it seemed to be a solid drawing and animation app but clunky integration for my pro workflow. I use like 3-4 adobe apps daily. We've worked for some of the same brands and overlap stylistically, so I'm very glad I came across your breakdowns. Probably the most relevant breakdown I've watched. Nothing wrong with pointing out the Pros and promoting what you think is the better app. I've been waiting for Adobe to drop something like this. I think it's going to take my work up a notch.

I have been using procreate solidly for about a year and a half on ipad/apple pen and while I love it for so many reasons, the one thing I've always felt it lacked sorely in was the ability to replicate watercolor. I've used brush packs and even made my own, but nothing quite captures the way water flows or colors mix. I see many people do traditional watercolor and then high res scan and then digital ink and add on top of that instead. I happen to have the adobe suite for work/school purposes, but haven't noticed/heard of Fresco before. After watching this I downloaded it and am impressed with the watercolor features alone. The ability to use layers like wet and dry is also crazy useful and unexpected. I'm not sure if it will replace everything I do or anything like that because I'm very used to and still like procreate, but I will use it for vector and watercolor immediately. I have always disliked adobe illustrator and to see how much more intuitive it feels on Fresco is a great change of pace. I can't wait to test out the animation workflow for small cycle gif making because It is terrible on procreate (never tried Dream and don't plan to).

Procreate is still very nice despite a lot of things missing in many departments. Main things that annoy me are layer management being VERY basic and the lack of any non destructive adjustments. Main reason I still use it is the amount of brushes that have become go to brushes to archieve a specific look, plus the easy of use and lack of clutter.
Fresco is very good and I have used it now and then, but the familiarity or lack there of as well as the less familiar brushes keeps me jumping to Procreate. If I were to start from scratch I would probably lean towards Fresco for its more advanced layer management stuff and the more user friendly anaimation things.
I do wish there was a desktop Mac version though, as I can not get along with Photoshop and don't want to spend a lot of money on a CC sub.

  • @nikolailockertsen

Good video! I see with your style, the vector part really makes sense! For the type of stuff Im doing, Procreate + Procreate Dreams cannot really be replaced.
There is a few features you mentioned for Fresco that also exists in Procreate and/or Dreams. The creating palette from a photo or with the camera is also in Procreate. The clipmask stuff with animation works in Dreams. The adjustment for any layer etc also works in Dreams. Importing all your PS brushes alsoworks in Procreate and therefor also in Dreams.
The layer limit is also there for a reson. Do you every experience that Fresco gets slow? Or laggy?
I really like the automatic looping for animation feature you show in Fresco. I would love that in Dreams! And also the particle-animation thingy with the stars. That looks really cool!
Looks like stuff you could do with the old Sketchbook Motion app.
