    Interface
The interface of Procreate Dreams is setup somewhat similar to Procreate. You have the Gallery which is called the Theatre where all your movies are stored. Here you can make a new movie file and start animating. ToonSquid has the same setup. A gallery with all your movies and the place you can create a new movie. In Procreate Dreams you have some default options for creating a movie and even adjust the duration and aspect ratio of your movie. In ToonSquid you have it all in one window. When you have created your movie you move to the timeline.
TimelineIn Procreate Dreams you have the timeline and the stage. ToonSquid has a similar setup, but it looks a lot more like Procreate or any other animation software like Adobe Animate. In Procreate Dreams you can select a brush and start animating frame by frame. When you pull down the timeline you are in Flipbook mode where you have more screen estate to concentrate on animating. You can use onionskin and adjust the colours, opacity and frames you want to se before and after. ToonSquid has the same features, expect the Flipbookmode. You always have the timeline, which you can collapse to have more screen estate. But then you can not create a new keyframe. In Procreate Dreams you can extend your drawing by dragging your frame while holding another finger on the screen. In ToonSquid you can easily move frames around and extend the drawings. Procreate Dreams has one timeline. If you want to create a new scene you have to group it. In ToonSquid you can create different scenes in the same movie and keep them separate.
    Drawing
The drawing experience in both apps is similar. You have a variety of brushes you can work with. They both have default brushes and you can import Procreate Brushes into Procreate Dreams and ABR or Photoshop brushes into ToonSquid. In Procreate Dreams you can only adjust the size and opacity of the brush. In ToonSquid you can adjust all of the properties of a brush. You can even turn a pixel brush into a vector brush. ToonSquid has pixel brushes and vector brushes. Procreate dreams only has pixel brushes.
    Selection tool and Transform
In Procreate Dreams there is no selection tool or transform you can do in drawing mode. You have to add a keyframe to the timeline and then you can transform the whole drawing using Move and Scale, Warp or Distort. In ToonSquid there is a selection tool you can use to select a part of your drawing and transform it in the same way.
    Layers
In Procreate Dreams you can use layers on each keyframe. The only thing you can change to turn it off or on and adjust the opacity clear and and delete it. In ToonSquid you can add layers, group them, Lock them, Copy and Duplicate the layers. Lock transparency, Set it as a reference layers to separate your inks from the color layer, and merge all visible layers. You can also apply all of the blend modes.
    KeyFrame animation
In Procreate Dreams you use separate tracks for the body parts and start animating them. The parts are not connected to each other. When you have finished your keyframe animation you need to make a group to move the whole animation around the screen. In ToonSquid you can setup the character with Transform Hierarchy, so that the parts of the body are linked to each other. It is a much better way to do keyframe animation of a character. In ToonSquid you can use different shapes to draw. You can even animate shapes using vector points to animate them. In Procreate Dreams you can not.

I suppose that’s one opinion. But seasoned Disney artists like Aaron Blaise COMPLETELY disagree. So do I.
I’m afraid it’s OVER for ToonSquid. You had a good run, but Procreate Dreams is an unparalleled paradigm shift for those with the capacity to learn how to use it!
      At least for TRADITIONAL animation.
However, Toonsquid is probably still perfect for digital puppetry 🤷🏾

    • @bobbycannon3571
      @bobbycannon3571 6 месяцев назад +15

@@Tonabillity how? Toonsquid does everything Dreams tried to do AND more. When the dev releases the upcoming FX features…nothing will even hold a candlelight. Dreams has years before it will even have the basic animation features and on top of that…it will never have vector animation capabilities. All in all, its an elementary app for children to dip their toes into motion graphics.

    • @Tonabillity
      @Tonabillity 6 месяцев назад

@@bobbycannon3571 You’re absolutely right. For you it’s probably about features. I can understand that. And unless you’re a Disney level animator, it’s probably perfect.
However, I’m ONLY interested in pure traditional, old school Animation. I’m sketching in Dreams RIGHT NOW!
Yes, I said SKETCHING. Because what I love most about Procreate, is that it feels EXACTLY like a sketchbook! For me, sketching in sketchbooks has ALWAYS been the most fun EVER!!
Because of that, it’s giving me a greater capacity to actually study the subtleties of animation and sharpen my DRAWING skills.
Yes, BASIC missing features like merge layers and the Lasso tool is driving me nuts! But it’s like complaining that the window wipers aren’t working in my futuristic hyperdrive starship. 🤷🏾
So for now, I just focused on the technology that’s actually WORKING, while waiting on the upgrades.
They’ve been pretty consistent with upgrading features at least once per month, so I’m hoping that by January or February those headaches will be resolved
Meanwhile, I’m too spoiled by those EXQUISITE procreate brushes that feel like BUTTER, and with such a thrilling UI, I’m not ABOUT to turn back to the Stone Age. Sorry, It’s just so much more fun than any other App I’ve used!!🌟🌟🌟
I just love how easy and fluid it is to adjust the timeline. And NOTHING beats the ease of one-finger HORIZONTAL timeline scrolling, in full screen mode!!
Yes, I know ToonSquid also has VERTICAL finger scrolling but it always feels awkward and clunky to me.
And don’t get me started on Dream’s, Performance mode!! That’s a whole Nother level of phenomenon!!!
Hey, if you love ToonSquid, have at it. I’m not trying to talk you out of enjoying your favorite App. But for ME, I’ve moved on.
Procreate Dreams is the paradigm shift of the FUTURE. I’m so hyped to know that they will be UPGRADING it for the rest of our lives!

Great side by side comparison review Stayf! Using the two apps myself, I agree that the Dreams release was probably a bit too soon. At this point I think ToonSquid is the clear frontrunner. The hype Savage generated I think might have also backfired a little bit. Expectations were pretty high. The Performance feature is cool and it's going to win some people over to their camp but to me the app as it currently sits is not fully baked. All in, both apps can fit into my workflow depending on the type of project but at this point I am somewhat disappointed with the Dreams rollout. I used RA from 2017-2023, but TS is a huge upgrade IMO. I use a 2017 ipad pro, and thought I needed to buy a new ipad because RA would freeze and crash with complex operations / imports / layer merging, yet TS does it all smooth and quickly even with multple video layers. I only miss the fill tool (behind+blur options) and way looping worked in RA, but the keyframing options in TS are incredibly useful and overall speed up my workflow several times over.

you need to add drawing and then tap inside that drawing you made, toonsquid automatically adds your drawing to the start unless you select a specific drawing, same fo layers, if you don't select one, it will go to the first layer by default.

the layes is probably bc you are using layers with different brushes or effects, like one layer has a different oppacity or effect, or if you switch from pixel to vector brushes, it will create a new layer depending on what you use, you cannot have two objects with different properties in the same layer.

One thing I'd like to add when it comes to importing movies - ToonSquid respects the alpha channels of movies, Procreate Dreams does not.

I’m not saying frame-by-frame is wrong, on the contrary…but there might be people (including myself) that manages stuff like rigging, hierarchies and symbols better (stuff that ToonSquid has, really complete). And for people like me, who does a MIX of frame by frame, symbols and hierarchies, Dreams feels way too unfinished, and I’d still prefer ToonSquid. The one thing that I don't think you mentioned was the performance feature that Procreate has which ToonSquid does not. I think it's a really big feature to have and not only that but you can go back and edit those motions if you're not happy or just try it again. The other thing that I would say that Procreate does well is make it easy to use. I'm pretty much a newbie with art and animation and I found ToonSquid awesome to look at but I really had trouble trying to figure it out. The symbol library was great, but I constantly had problems with it and found it really hard to use. When I did lip syncing with it, I had to redo the symbols many times just because I couldn't get it to work the way I wanted. With Procreate, I was able to figure out a lot just by playing with features. I really like both software apps and I am giving both a good thumbs up. I would love to see some of the features of ToonSquid in Procreate (like the vectors and symbols) as I find it easier to work in Procreate. I also really love the camera function in ToonSquid. I'm not sure if you can edit cameras with Procreate yet. Maybe you can, but I haven't found that feature yet.

Thanks for your reply. Procreate Dreams will become a better app in the future. There is no camera in Dreams, but i am sure they will add new features in the future. They both approach the app in a different way. I like Dreams a lot and it has some great functions. They both have a learning curve. The same happened with drawing apps. I tried most of them, but I stuck with Procreate for the intuitive user experience. I am sure Dreams will be my animation app in the long run.

The immediacy of procreate dreams is on other levels of excellence ditto the feel of the design equal to procreate in toonsqui nn you have the same quality. Also using frames in procreate dreams is more immediate and the rendering lake fluidity never seen before. Ultimate? Honey. No.
Disney, ghibli, other animation studios use these three programs for animating that are light years ahead of either toonsquid or procreate dreams.
Opentoonz (ghibli mostly and they use clip studio for vector line work and opentoonz is free).
Toonboom (has everything you can think of for the highest version but it is pricey). This IS the GOAT if you van afford it and get clip studio for vector lines.
Digicel flipbook (disney for princess and the frog). Similar pricing as toonboom. 20 bucks for the lightest version. Expensive for im the pro who knows how to animate and use every software trick in the book.
The only thing is these are not on ipad.
Toonsquid and Dreams are both trying their best but they got eons to go to even compare.
