Or there is an even more logical answer, they have the sales data from past sales, and they know that the 2 most popular choise is the full minimalistic (min RAM, min Storage, min CPU cores) and the full maximalist (max RAM, max Storage, max CPU cores, and every other possible options). So they just simplificied the lineup to not premanufacture things, what nobody will ever buy, even if it's possible (like max RAM but min Storage and min CPU cores, or any of this unusual combo, if they only sold 10 previously from this kind, they can ignore this, not worth to manufacturing and doing the logistic to travel this models all around the world.. they are manufacruring models in millions of amount, just to add one extra choise to sell 10 more is meanigless, it's more complicated to choose for those who are already confused which one to choose)
@@TamasKiss-yk4st simplification for their benefit, profiteering. I'd just go regular gloss screen with better colour / contrast myself but it's a shame for others. I cant live with apple either really, just a screen junkie so they have me interested on that bit.
I ordered one with the standard finish. It's great to hear how much you like the new matte finish, but I've actually gotten used to working on the glossy screen without a screen protector. The trick I've found is cleaning it before I use it to remove any finger grease. Finger grease seems to be what makes drawing on the bare glass subpar. I've gotten used to it now and don't even think about going back to a screen protector, plus I get to see the full dynamic range, which I missed when I was using one. Mine is arriving in a few days. Can't wait to see that Ultra Super Twin Turbo Max Retina OLED screen.
Ah yeah, my wife uses one with the regular finish too. I just hate the way the class feels on my fingers more than the pencil. The PenTips + tip makes the plain glass fine, but again I hate the feeling of the gestures, haha. I don’t know what my problem is. Love this matte finish though!
I tried to get used to draw on the bare glass but I just can’t lol. It also feels gross to touch, maybe its just my sensory issues (autism LOL) I need a matte texture:) But everyone is different!
As long as Apple makes Apple Pencil tip softer than the nano surface and you should be fine. But I personally prefer a replaceable matte protector for the versatility.
@@christopherpederson1021 Possible is the word, we need only look as recently as the finewoven accessories having immediate durability issues to know that they can occasionally drop the quality ball.
@@Paul-sk2pcits not the pencil you have to worry about, its the small dirt pieces like micro sand and such that get in between your pen and the screen when writing.. its will for sure get scratched in no time
a HUGE thank you for taking the risk on the Nano Texture option as an artist. This is the content I was looking to see how this felt using for drawing with the pencil etc. Subbed
I’ve had my 12.9 pro since 2018 and it just won’t die! I’m watching vids like this in hopes I can decide whether or not to upgrade / if I need a paperlike if i do! Thank you!
I was going to skip the Nano option because I wasn't sure if the contrast/colors would be affected too much and the long-term durability of the surface, since you need a special supplied cloth to wipe it down. But your glowing review is making me consider getting it. But I really don't need more than 512GB of storage. SO glad you and Brad Colbow are here to speak to the concerns related to illustrators. Thanks
@@hotmonkeyfilms Unfortunately not, but I can tell you that I prefer the nano texture option even without trying the other because the bare glass will have the same feel as the previous ipad, and I don't like working on glossy finish.
I've never owned any Apple products but, man, I have to respect how much thought they put into presentation, packaging and the unboxing experience. But they also should at that price tag. I love the idea of a tablet with textured glass to give the feel of drawing on paper. Thanks for showing us!
I got the nano and immediately fell in love when my 13” arrived. There are zero downsides no loss of brightness or sharpness. I hope they offer it on MacBook and iPhone soon
Comparing side by side it most definitely loses pop and clarity. It’s not massively different but it does rob OLED of its natural wow factor. That said the light diffusion is amazing and if you’re going to be outside or around a lot of lights it may be worth it.
I received my 2TB iPad Pro with nano texture yesterday and returned it the same day. I'm sure that I personally would be annoyed by the display every time I used it. I want the best display and pay good dollar for it, so I don't want to cover it up with a screen protector or a nano texture. Besides that it seems the nano display is a magnet for fingerprints and the cloth is not able to remove them as easy as one might think. Also the text seems to be a bit more blurry. In a few days I will get my money refunded after which I can order the right version. I'm glad that you like it though, but I missed if it did feel like for example paperlike or not? Does it actually feel as if you get some 'resistance' from the screen or is it smooth like the 'normal' screen? I hear some people say it even smoother than the normal glass?
Weird that sounds like the opposite experience I'm having-especially in regards to finger prints. It's much worse on the glossy screen. I made a new video that goes into more detail with comparisons: ruclips.net/video/KEq2Ybb8PKA/видео.htmlsi=hSMm4aNgA_FyxCfV
Glad you like the nano texture! I opted to save some cash and stick with the base model and just get a matte screen protector. I still can't believe Adobe is waiting until June to push out the Pencil Pro updates, though.
I understand it feels different when you touch it but does the pencil feel different on the nano texture vs the glossy glass, and is it similar to a Paperlike or Astropad screen protector that gives you some of that resistance? thanks for the review. 😊
It’s definitely an improvement in pencil feel. I don’t like drawing on the bare glass (standard display) at all. It’s close to the current version of Paperlike.
For me the nano texture is perfect for drawing. It’s definitely smoother than some of the more aggressive paper feel options, but I find it to be the right balance of feel and screen quality.
@@chris-piascik Appreciate your extremely quick response! Thank you very much! Let's see how my Ipad 7th gen with Paperlike feels in direct comparison to the new pro m4 :D that will be such a big upgrade
@@chris-piascik Awesome, thanks for your response much appreciated!! I don't live close to anywhere where I can just check this out so this is very helpful because none of the tech reviewers are talking about the differences in feel. and as Artists I feel like probably the number one thing we all wondered when we heard 'nano texture' was... does that mean we could have an option where we don't need a screen protector. lol
That was the most fun un boxing, haha. Glad to see a real look at this nano texture. I won’t upgrade until next model but I’m so excited with how they’re improving the iPad experience for us artists.
Looking forward to receiving mine on Monday. I didn’t get the Nano texture I opted for the reg 13in 1tb pro version. I figured if anything later I’ll just get something like Paper Like screen protector
Thank you SO much for cutting to the chase on nano-texture! Like you, I have been scouring for information on how it feels to just draw on it. Settled the debate for me, much appreciated!.
Thank you for the great videos! I found yours among the best, especially in seeing the things I needed to see in deciding on nano or not. It's amazing how just about all of the videos on the nano textured screen are from an artists point of view and that's the one thing my ipad will never be used for, haha (I don't have that talent). I bought the nano tech for aviation in using the ipad as a kneeboard with Foreflight. Even on cloudy days, you're normally above them in the sun. My only other ipad (1st gen 12.9) will stay in my studio. If any other pilots, student to airline captains are thinking about it, I will say at first I only had glare in mind in making my decision, but if you've never flown at night, the reflections on a glossy screen from your dash lights are so much worse than sun glare since your kneeboard is of course, on your leg, and the perfect again for all those reflections.
I bought the 2tb with cell and wifi. My main reason for the upgrade in the first place was space, and for years I've had to constantly delete video footage to make room and the back and fourth from pc (itunes) is torture. Also, if you already have to spring for the 1tb, and you can see yourself using it (easy for me to fill that in a month) then 2tb isn't that bad a wallet bite. I'll stick to my pc for my video editing, but my ipad is a major briefcase for me to store and present my videos. If it wasn't for space, I would still be very content with 1st gen 12.9. Nano was a very nice bonus! Cell data is only for aviation purposes and a HUGE hardware difference that no one ever mentions on their videos (since it's not ever in specs), but only an ipad with the cell data option will have the hardware chip for GPS. Most aviators will use a separate ADS-B to provide weather, traffic, etc, but cell data is nice being able to update your weather imagery charts (that an ads-b won't do) on those long flights, or if grounded with long unexpected delays.
I got the iPad Pro without the nano coating but the screen is still all the rage for me. It really pops out all the colors and makes watching a RUclips video or another streaming service so much more enjoyable. Buy it for the screen update. The rest is not so important but microphone also sounds better.
@@chris-piascik yes I can imagine why. I am not an artist. Also I bought the previous pencil but I never used it for anything. I thought it would be good to annotate pdf files but it wasn’t IMO.
@@americanprincess851 To me they sound the same as the iPad Pro 1st generation that I also have. The Camera is better but not as good as the iPhone 13 Pro camera by a lot. Camera is my only disappointment. I wish it was as good as on the iPhone.
Hi Chris, I didn’t even know about this future the new IPad had. It’s a lot of money but for an illustrator who is working all day on this IPad it is a good investment. Hope it will be on the cheaper models also. Love your humor, you make me always smile when watching your videos! 😂
It's fascinating, because this is the third or fourth review I've seen and all the others were like, "It really affects image quality," and this is the first one to say, "You can barely tell."
Please keep us updated over how the screen and nibs hold up over more use. I'm also hoping to upgrade from my 2017-ish ipad but I'll wait and see how folks use it over time.
I’ll definitely be going with the default glossy display. TONS of drawbacks on the Nano-Texture version, the main one being how it basically gimps the whole reason of buying an OLED screen. Less inky blacks, less contrast, washed out colors and less sharpness (even for text). Gotta pay significantly more just to have nano-texture, not to mention having to worry about the finely textured surface from eroding over time with all the pen scraping and hand oils. Gonna be expensive and time consuming to replace as well. All of this in addition to the likely incompatibility with third party screens and protectors. And once you go nano, you’re basically stuck with it even if you end up preferring the glossy version because it can’t easily be replaced. The anti-glare is only useful basically for creators who work with it outdoor in bright day conditions. It’s easy enough to reduce glare indoors with a simple adjustment of the screen angle and/or lighting. Just go with the cheaper default glossy version, and if you ever need antiglare or a matte surface, put on a temporary third party screen or protector until you don’t have any further need for it. It’s a no-brainer really.
I used my brain, and this one made sense for me. I can't imagine you've seen one in person if you're saying the nanotexture ruins the display. This screen is a huge improvement over my M1 iPad Pro.
I got the nano version and have been drawing for a few hours. This will replace my 2018 iPad Pro. Definitely a noticeably better drawing experience. I think the biggest difference is how your hand feels gliding across the screen when you use the pencil - it really improves the control and flow of strokes compared to stickier glass. The pencil tip feel is more secondary and change but also improved. That being said unless your were already going to get 1TB for the ram it’s not worth that yuge an upgrade alone. I really like the look of matte screen. It’s about as good as my old 2018 iPad Pro, the oled making up for the losses caused by the matte glass effect. The 2018 iPad Pro still looks fantastic.
Can you clarify something for me? The nano feels better to touch because our fingers don't "stick" to it. I'm assuming this is what you like about the nano glass, but how is the texture itself when drawing with the pencil? I tried it in store, and found the smooth and nano glass to be more similar than different while drawing. Meaning that it doesn't have that scratchy paper like tooth to it. It has some feeling, but it doesn't quite live up to the expectation of what I had hoped it would be. Instead it's more of a very fine texture that doesnt have as much feeling while drawing as say a "paper-like" or similar branded screen protector. BUT it does still slide better, for example when using your fingers to touch the screen. Can you confirm this? What are your thoughts on the texture itself while drawing? I found them to be quite similar, especially once both nano and standard get coated by the oils in our skin. They behaved quite similarly at that point, although touch was slightly better on the nano due to less contact drag.
Yes, I don't like the feeling of sticking to the glass. This surface is smooth when sliding across it. Although the texture is subtle for drawing it makes all the difference for me. I hate drawing on the glossy screen. I love drawing on this screen.
@@chris-piascik Yeah I felt like the texture was too subtle so I went with the standard. I have a Wacom Cintiq Pro 27 with etched glass and I love it but in the store I just feel like the nano was not as textured as I hoped it would be. I'm still debating on on keeping the standard or returning and getting the nano. I too prefer to draw on etched glass. At the same time the smooth glass is visually nicer. It's a tough call. I figured I could always put a screen protector on the smooth glass if i wanted but I could never remove the nano glass if I wanted clarity and sharpness back :) I appreciate your response, and thank you for making the video. I know many have been waiting for an artists review of the two glass options.
I’m curious as to how the nano texture will wear over time. I know that the nano texture studio displays get smudges that can’t get removed and also are particular about what kind of microfiber cloth is used. So as an artist I don’t want to get the nano texture and regret it later. I might wait a month or so to make a final decision based off of longer term reviews 😭
@@chris-piasciki just tried both the standard and nano texture in the store today. I noticed the standard glass actually feels “stickier” for lack of a better term. The nano texture seems to glide a little better both with your fingers and the pencil. That being said the contrast is certainly more noticeable on the standard but I don’t think it’s substantial like tech RUclipsrs are making out to be. I just don’t like that I have to upgrade to 1tb considering most of my files are saved on Adobe’s cloud lol
Hello and thanks for the nice review! Not a professional illustrator, but I like messing around with Japanese calligraphy. I noticed that the nanotexture cover, that I like very much for the display quality, gives none to almost none friction compared to glossy screen. All the "paperlike" matte screen protectors that I use on older iPads and other device have a stronger feedback. Did you compare your older matte display protectors with the nanotexture one? Would be nice to know your opinion on that. Thanks!
It’d be great if you could do an update 3 and 6 months later to see how the nano-textured glass is holding up with drawing on it every day. Great review - and amazing artwork - thank you.
My 2018 11" iPad Pro still handles everything I throw at it, zero lag. The OLED screen is so tempting since I've been wanting to upgrade in size too but I'm still not sure if it's worth it. They've gotten so expensive. With the same price I could upgrade my desktop PC which is also 8 years old...
99.9 % of youtubers talk the same boring thing what is already said in the apple event. Finally Happy to have found someone who is different from others sharing a unique honest review from practically using it . You got a new subscriber 😊. Am new to your channel. I have a M1 ipad pro 12.9 , i am not upgrading to latest devices as it as i am not a professional artist and i dont need so much power . Already happy with the M1 ipad pro 12.9 with previous magic keyboard. Loved your video ❤
I am glad that you like the new nano texture. But sad at the same time, because I looked with enthusiasm for your reviews on what is the best ipad screen protector for illustrators.
Ahh, well, I’ll likely experiment with new ones and see how they pair with this. I feel like we’ve sort of gotten as far as we’ll get with that “tech”.
As a warning, the nano texture with scratch. You'll have no idea how it happened, but the coating that they use (Samsung as well) to make it less reflective is so so prone to micro scratches. It's the coating, not the glass, but it drove me insane on my phone and steam deck and I ended up putting a screen protector over them. I'm like you where I can't stand to touch the smooth glass and drawing on it is the worst. I've got the esr magnetic protector on its way.
@@chris-piascikI don't know if it's exactly the same, but it's very similar. I did the unthinkable and took my fingernail and scratched it on the tippy top corner and it juuuuuust went into the coating and left microscratches. So I returned it. After all of the s24 ultra reviews saying how scratch resistant the screen was, I went naked with it for about a week and like day 10 I had two scratches and lost my mind. It sucks because I wanted to enjoy a device without a SC wen protector for the first time since iPhone 2,but it wasn't worth the risk. No matter how careful you are, it's too expensive to risk it!
I went to the apple store. I drew on both models. The nano texture is not the way to go. First off the colors and screen are not the same, there was something visually wrong when I was drawing on the nano texture screen. When I drew on the normal screen it looked crisp and clear and colors and brightness were full. Nano got rid of all that. Get the regular screen add paper like screen protector after. There's something wrong with the nano one. I just couldn't get comfoetable with it , I physically saw something that wasn't the same.
Weird, that sounds like there was something wrong with the one you drew on. I notice a very subtle difference in contrast but that’s it. There’s also countless side by side videos showing the minimal difference. Apple is crazy particular about this kind of thing, if it was like you’re describing they would have never offered it. There was no reason for them to even make it-so if they couldn’t get it right they just wouldn’t have released it.
Great video, subscribed! The Nano texture didn’t feel right to me when I tested it at the store, so I opted for a regular 13” M4 with a matte screen protector for my work. Having the option to go back to a regular screen is also a plus. Finally upgraded from a 2020 iPad Pro!
I went with the standard screen and paper like screen protector. I have a gen4 pro so this should be a big upgrade for me. I will see what the long term reviews say about the nano screen and get it next time if it holds up
It really depends. If you would benefit from a 1 or 2tb option then the nano texture is less of a bump in cost. But if you don’t need that much storage it’s a huge price price increase
Also I’ve never been a fan of the paperlike screen protectors because they make the display a little pixelated in My opinion. And they scratch easily and are difficult to apply without many air bubbles. The nano texture glass seems to solve all of that.
I think it's absolutely dumb that the pencil doesn't work with older iPads. I literally just got a new iPad months ago. I'm not buying another iPad for the sake of using that pencil but dang that really sucks.
Yeah I get it. I understand why, because they moved the camera to horizontal that made them change the charging/pairing connection. It’s possible they could have made it work, but they’re so crazy about getting them as thin and small as possible that there is likely zero wiggle room for those kinds of adjustments.
Yea it’s ridiculous. But honestly, there were videos of people everywhere on RUclips discussing the new iPads being released. You should definitely do more research before investing in Apple products.
I wonder how the nano texture would last with a metal tip. I love using those for note taking but always switch back to the normal one for drawing/animating
I wish it wasn't so thin and I wish I didn't have to get 1tb version for the nano texture screen; Think they'd sell more if you could get it on the 512gb model.
I have downgraded to an 11 inch size. I find convenience of portability much more needed than trying to wheel the 13 inch size. I’m more likely to draw and use the iPad, but I will look into the pencil tips that are in your links.
Great video. I think you watched different videos than I did. Several reviewers were gleeful while pointing out the new “textured” screen was ONLY anti-glare. It did nothing for creating friction like Paperlike.
it's worth mentioning that the 1tb ipad also has an upgraded cpu/ram on top of the storage. Still really annoying that nano isn't available on the cheaper models
Yeah that’s true, but my M1 iPad Pro from 2021 has no issues handling anything I threw at it so performance wasn’t a concern for me. The base configuration and even the Air would be more than powerful enough.
Thank you for that great working review of the matte textured screen M4 iPad Pro and Pencil Pro…. Right on point and made me feel so much better about my own decision to order the M4 Pro with the Nano textured screen. Yesterday, I got the new Apple Pencil pro along with the Magic Keyboard (which I do prefer on my frequent travels) but I have to wait until mid June for the 2TB M4 iPad Pro w/ matte screen and 5G cellular (which is the reason for the 1 month delay according to Apple when I ordered right after the video-event). Oh well…. anxiously awaiting!
Is upgrading to a 1TB iPad just to get the nano screen (which eliminates the need for a matte protector) worth the extra cost? While the nano screen offers a nice texture, wouldn't you still want some protection for such an expensive device?
For me it is, but certainly not for everyone. I’m not worried about extra protection for screen aside from a case because the majority of the time it just sits on my desk in my sketchboard Pro. Because I use this mainly for my work as an illustrator I prioritize the optimal drawing experience over anything else.
Have you tried using silicone tips on your Apple Pencil?? I don't know how you can draw without any!?? They've been a massive a game changer for me and I don't know how I survived without them for so long. I see you have the PenTips, but yours look like they're hard. The silicone ones are amazing, and there are cheap little silicone covers on Amazon for super cheap
Also, wonder if I'm the odd one but I get paper-like screen protectors to reduce friction, not to add. I actually prefer my drawing surface to be in a consistent low friction so that I can control the pen motion better rather than having to put too much effort into counteracting against the friction. It's a bit annoying to deal with friction because that acts differently based on the length and speed of the stroke, and is also affected by pen pressure a lot. Having the friction near-zero in all time makes a much easier life.
As far as I’m aware the nano technology is about reducing glare. Not changing the surface of the iPad to feel like a screen protector/like paper. Perhaps I am misunderstanding the video, are you saying the nanotechnology coating changes how it feels to draw on the iPad? Is it more like paper than glass?
With the extra financial outlay for this ipad, do you think you have a device that is future proofed enough to eventually balance that out? It seems to be a huge step up from the previous generation.
My question is whether the yellow color is displayed correctly. For example, the LG C2 screen is OLED, and on it, the yellow color has green and red pixels at the edges
very honest review i was looking forward to this one thank you ! Question : would you recommend to add screen protector for the paper like feeling or you think it doesnt really need for it on the nano texture screen ?
I'm so glad you mentioned this and brought it up in this video! ❤ Yeah, I just went to the Apple store yesterday and saw the nano texture display, and I felt the exact same way. It was just kind of feeling meh too 😑. Yeah, it cuts down on glare a little bit, but I'm certainly not going to pay over 100 extra bucks just for it! 💰 And like people are saying, you can get better anti-glare covers for a lot less that feel a lot better with the Apple Pencil.
So happy to find this video. I keep watching reviews of the new iPads and none of them until now told me what I really needed to know - was it going to be worth the wait until mid June for my 11” with nano glass to show up or not? Glad to see I made the right choice.
@chris-piascik What was the drawing experience like with the nano? Does it provide any tactile feedback when you're drawing or does it mainly effect the visuals?
It doesn’t affect the visuals much aside from getting rid of the glare. The drawing experience is substantially better than the glossy screen. I can’t draw comfortably on an iPad with a glossy screen and no screen protector. With this one it’s a great experience. It’s just enough resistance for me and the soft texture feels much better for gestures than the standard glass.
So thankful for your review ! This is what I’ve been looking for. I really didn’t want to order the wrong iPad in case I did not like the nano texture. Would apple even accept the return ? Grateful for your review !
I know it isn't easy to describe but what do you think about the feel of the nano texture and do you still get the sound of drawing on paper or is it more silent?
I had my iPad since 2020 and I am an artist/animator and designer and I finally saw a review that I really need to know which one I should upgrade cause I was really in Delma between if I should pay extra for the nano glass or not
Replaced my 12.9 pro from 2018 with the new 13” and 256gb M4pro. I have no need for 1tb of memory just to get this textured glass. I’ll try some pencil tips instead - and yeah Apple, hows about a black pencil pro and charging brick!
With your use case I’d add Apple care just in case the nano texture doesn’t stand up. Being a first gen iteration there is no way to know if it will or not.
The nano surface not reflecting room lighting that interferes with viewing the iPad screen…… Is the nano surface different/better than a textured screen protector for taming room light reflection? Or is the whole package of the screen technology less reflective and cause less eye strain? Like, $2000 worth of less eye strain? Cause I see the pro pencil hover feature displaying the layer images as a big advantage over my M1. Less reflection might be the feather that makes me push the ‘PURCHASE NOW” button.
Goddamn thank god: a review from an actual artist and not a tech RUclipsr. I’ve needed this perspective from an artist and as a fellow artist you’ve convinced me. I’ve had the 2020 iPad Pro 11 inch so I’ve not upgraded for some time but this is a worthwhile investment. May even opt in for the 13 inch. Thank you!!
I don't know if you'll see this but I was curious, on your left fore arm, is that a Grime Reaper tattoo? It very much looks like his style so I was curious. Thank you for your video regarding the new iPad. I'm still running the 2018 iPad Pro 10.9 and am thinking about upgrading. Mainly for the new Pencil Pro functionality. The 2018 is definitely showing it's age. I hope you enjoy the new iPad more every time you use it! As always, loving your art! Have fun!
Yeah, I shouldn’t have used those clips without explanation. I was doing my final linework there and had the smoothing turned all the way up. fresco does smoothing by correcting as you draw so if you don’t know what’s happening it looks like lag. Procreate’s streamline works differently but is a different kind of delay.
I think it can be. My partner is an illustrator and she uses the 11” air. I have a new video coming soon where I compare a few different iPads and sizes for drawing specifically.
The iPads have been overly powerful for a long time so even the early ones are still very capable. The new features aren’t a dramatic improvement but there’s a lot of stuff I really appreciate like the hover features with the pencil, and the squeeze feature pulling up menus in apps with save a lot of time. I also love this new display.
I feel you 😂 I’ve been doing the same exact thing with the same purchase but I chickened out last minute and canceled the nano and bought the standard glass
Is the pressure sensitivity more consistent or not? My guess is it is not but really would love if they did improve it. As good as Apple pencil is, pressure sensitivity is not as great as wacom when trying to do digital painting, it gets blotchy unfortunately..
Thanks! I just do some color correction and subtle grading manually when I’m editing. Every time I try to use a LUT it looks crazy, probably because I don’t know what I’m doing, lol.
hey i got a couple questions if you don't mind answering 1. how does the nano texture compare to stuff like paperlike for example? (in terms of the friction on the pencil when drawing and that feeling of paper) 2. I've heard the nano texture that Apple adds to its products is VERY delicate and it can be damage by as little as using a different micro fiber cloth to clean it, so I'm wondering if this one is just as delicate? since it's gonna be used for drawing this worries me 3. oh and one more thing! does the nano texture wears off the apple pencil tips? I know products like paperlike are like sand paper on the tip of the apple pencil so it needs swapping over a few months, how does the nano texture compare to it?
1. It's not as textured as some-but-I hate drawing on the glossy screen. I love drawing on this screen. 2. That criticism is in regard to the old Studio display. This display is different, so that's all speculation. If a cloth could damage it they wouldn't be letting you use a Apple Pencil on it. 3. I imagine they will wear slightly faster than a bare glass display, but nowhere near some of the more aggressive paper texture variations.
Thank u for the artist oriented review! and for the live stream too. This Ipad looks amazing, but nano texture only for 1tb is kinda ridiculous for sure ! All Ipads should have this available, but must be a good reason to they do that ( I h$pe ) .
I chickened out and canceled my 13” w/Nano screen. And reordered the 13” Pro with regular glass, because I usually watch movies inside and want the better contrast/sharpness.

Haha I don’t think I’ve ever intentionally used my iPad camera.
@@chris-piascik I used mine like 3 times in 2 years
Thanks for covering this NOBODY is talking about how it feels if you could make another review on it's durability in 3-6 months
Will do!
The restriction on the Nano glass totally makes sens.... the Textured glass takes up so much memory, they know you'll need more.
Haha there’s a lot of gig’s in those nanos.
Nano texture!!! I'm so jealous!
Also Fresco has my favorite implementation of the barrel squeeze so far.
Ah yeah! I really like it. Can’t wait to use the squeeze feature in Fresco when it’s updated. Have you gotten to mess around with it?
Also LOL’d at Twin Turbo
@@chris-piascik I can totally see that, and I'm glad Apple added the option, even though I passed on it.
I've tried using a brand new one with no grease and I can't stand the glass finish. It doesn't feel natural to draw on imo
I tried to get used to draw on the bare glass but I just can’t lol. It also feels gross to touch, maybe its just my sensory issues (autism LOL)
I need a matte texture:)
But everyone is different!
My doubts are about durability, not only scratches but how use will erode the matte surface.
Reasonable. But Wacom has had matte screens on their Cintiq's for a long time.
Would apple put something on that they haven’t tested for a significant amount of time. Doubtful, but possible
Subbed
Thanks! Happy to help!
Thanks
Happy to help!
@@chris-piascik Can you also review the NON-Nano Glossy dual OLED display to see if you would still recommend the Nano over it?
@@hotmonkeyfilms Unfortunately not, but I can tell you that I prefer the nano texture option even without trying the other because the bare glass will have the same feel as the previous ipad, and I don't like working on glossy finish.
Honestly I would just wait until in future generations where nano tech is more accessible and on cheaper options
Agreed!
Comparing side by side it most definitely loses pop and clarity. It’s not massively different but it does rob OLED of its natural wow factor. That said the light diffusion is amazing and if you’re going to be outside or around a lot of lights it may be worth it.
I would totally look into investing in a Macbook if it had a matte option!!
I opted for no nano because I didn’t want to wait until July lol. Maybe I’ll just return this in 30 days like a scum then have to wait less time 😂
@@emilio1316Yeah this is my main issue. Any screen protector too, takes away so much from the amazing screen especially the new OLED
This is the kind of video I was hoping to find. Thank you, very informing. I should check that Adobe Fresco too.
Happy to help! This is the kind of video I was looking for when I was waiting for mine to arrive.
How is the text blurry? I zoomed in all the way at the Apple Store side by side and it’s just as clear and sharp.
Glad you like the nano texture! I opted to save some cash and stick with the base model and just get a matte screen protector. I still can't believe Adobe is waiting until June to push out the Pencil Pro updates, though.
Ah yeah that’s reasonable. What’s even crazier is that the Procreate features aren’t available and they were IN THE keynote.
@@chris-piascik right?!
I’m looking to upgrade from my 2018 iPad Pro. It served me well.
They’ve been great for a long time. I used that one for a while.
same! Unfortunately my ipad pro 11 2018 is not running my usual apps all that well anymore 😢
I understand it feels different when you touch it but does the pencil feel different on the nano texture vs the glossy glass, and is it similar to a Paperlike or Astropad screen protector that gives you some of that resistance? thanks for the review. 😊
that's exactly the question that concerns me. paper like or / and nano texture glass? Help!
Glad you liked it!
Happy I could help!
Does the pencil specifically feel different on the nano texture compared to the basic gloss screen? Is there noticeably more friction?
Yes, I hate drawing on the glossy screen. I love drawing on this screen.
Is the feel and clarity of the nano texture comparable, or similar to the regular glossy screen with a screen protector?
I just posted a new video that goes deep into this (and compare that directly) ruclips.net/video/KEq2Ybb8PKA/видео.htmlsi=hSMm4aNgA_FyxCfV
@@chris-piascik thanks! I just watched it. Very informative, and your added humor made it really fun!
The Apple Pencil Pro is a big reason for me.
@@chris-piascik yes I can imagine why. I am not an artist. Also I bought the previous pencil but I never used it for anything. I thought it would be good to annotate pdf files but it wasn’t IMO.
How does the speakers sound on the new iPad Pro ? Thank you
@@americanprincess851 To me they sound the same as the iPad Pro 1st generation that I also have.
Thank you so much!
It's fascinating, because this is the third or fourth review I've seen and all the others were like, "It really affects image quality," and this is the first one to say, "You can barely tell."
Really? The videos I’ve seen have also said the difference is minimal.
Please keep us updated over how the screen and nibs hold up over more use. I'm also hoping to upgrade from my 2017-ish ipad but I'll wait and see how folks use it over time.
Will do.
Definitely agree that the ease of sliding your hand on the screen is a big improvement!
You definitely have to make "After 6 months" impression, and tell us about the screen - did it wear off a bit or at all
Will do!
Thanks Chris, this is exactly the information I was looking for. An honest, artist focused review of the textured screen.
Glad it was helpful!
Hurrah. From an illustrator's pov at last - THANK YOU! Very helpful indeed 👍🏻
Glad it was helpful!
I will be sure to update here as I do 98% of my work on my ipad.
Thanks!
It's definitely not as textured as a lot of the paper feel varieties-but-I hate drawing on the glossy screen. I love drawing on this screen.
I’ve been searching for a vid that talks about the nano texture’s feel for artists! Glad to hear it makes a difference!
👍👍👍
It’d be great if you could do an update 3 and 6 months later to see how the nano-textured glass is holding up with drawing on it every day. Great review - and amazing artwork - thank you.

My 2018 11" iPad Pro still handles everything I throw at it, zero lag. The OLED screen is so tempting since I've been wanting to upgrade in size too but I'm still not sure if it's worth it. They've gotten so expensive. With the same price I could upgrade my desktop PC which is also 8 years old...
My 2018 feels brand new still, besides the battery lasting less than it used to. I don’t understand why you’d upgrade unless it’s broken.
99.9 % of youtubers talk the same boring thing what is already said in the apple event.

Thanks! The M1 iPad Pro is still incredibly powerful and never gave me any issues!
Are you sure it’s the same coating?
Thanks for sharing! And for subscribing!
I went with the standard screen and paper like screen protector. I have a gen4 pro so this should be a big upgrade for me. I will see what the long term reviews say about the nano screen and get it next time if it holds up
Wich screen should i bhy on my new ipad pro im using it for school
It really depends. If you would benefit from a 1 or 2tb option then the nano texture is less of a bump in cost. But if you don’t need that much storage it’s a huge price price increase
Also I’ve never been a fan of the paperlike screen protectors because they make the display a little pixelated in
My opinion. And they scratch easily and are difficult to apply without many air bubbles. The nano texture glass seems to solve all of that.
It does for me!
This video helped a lot. I’m a tattoo artist and I was hoping the screen would help with illustration and design.
Glad to hear!
I still use the 2018, which is still pretty good. Thinking about this new gen one.
Tried it yesterday at the apple store. It feels awesome to draw on.
Cool! I agree.
Awesome! This what I’ve always wanted factory built in textured matte screen. Could you do an update in a month maybe to see how it’s holding up?
That’s my plan!
Congrats on the new iPad Chris! Looking forward to all you will create with it!
Thanks so much!
You should definitely do more research before investing in Apple products.
its a shame they dont do a version of the new pencil for the older Ipads.
I wonder how much better is this nano coating compares to a paperlike screen protector. The price jump is pretty significant unless you also need 1tb.
I guess for me, the paperlike wears down pretty quickly and starts to look rough.
it's worth mentioning that the 1tb ipad also has an upgraded cpu/ram on top of the storage.
Bummer you have to wait! Glad this was helpful!
I have, I don’t like how wide they made the tip. But I do like the PenTips+ which is a regular size tip with the softer material.
I think you have to try it yourself. It feels the same to me in the Apple Store but more of a fingerprint magnet imo
Totally agree Chris, with what you said about the cord and the charger being different colours. 🤔
hah such a bummer.
With the extra financial outlay for this ipad, do you think you have a device that is future proofed enough to eventually balance that out? It seems to be a huge step up from the previous generation.
I’d say absolutely, I had no issues with my 2021 iPad Pro working professionally. I didn’t NEED to upgrade at all.
My question is whether the yellow color is displayed correctly. For example, the LG C2 screen is OLED, and on it, the yellow color has green and red pixels at the edges
Color accuracy looks perfect to me so far comparing it to my MacBook Pro and my M1 iPad Pro.
very honest review i was looking forward to this one thank you ! Question :
would you recommend to add screen protector for the paper like feeling or you think it doesnt really need for it on the nano texture screen ?
Thanks! I made a new video that goes into more detail with comparisons: ruclips.net/video/KEq2Ybb8PKA/видео.htmlsi=hSMm4aNgA_FyxCfV
Glad I could help!
Hey Chris, thanks for the video. Did your previous ipad have an M1 or M2 chip? Which gen was it?
It was the M1 from 2021, I forget the gen at the moment…
@@chris-piascik Thank you
So what are you doing with your older iPad?
I have the same and REALLY want to upgrade, but not sure.
Haven’t decided yet!
So thankful for your review ! This is what I’ve been looking for. I really didn’t want to order the wrong iPad in case I did not like the nano texture. Would apple even accept the return ? Grateful for your review !
Glad it was helpful, if you don’t like it you can definitely return it within their window. I forget if it’s 2 weeks or 30 days
Chris, did you go with the 11" or 13"?
13
I know it isn't easy to describe but what do you think about the feel of the nano texture and do you still get the sound of drawing on paper or is it more silent?
It’s more quiet.
I had my iPad since 2020 and I am an artist/animator and designer and I finally saw a review that I really need to know which one I should upgrade cause I was really in Delma between if I should pay extra for the nano glass or not
Glad this was helpful!
Am i the only one who digs his minimal homescreen setup and the black and white wallpaper on his "old" ipad at 7:27? Where can i get that? ✌
I hope the texture doesn’t get worn down from usage and pen scratches
The nano surface not reflecting room lighting that interferes with viewing the iPad screen……
Is the nano surface different/better than a textured screen protector for taming room light reflection?
Or is the whole package of the screen technology less reflective and cause less eye strain?
Like, $2000 worth of less eye strain? Cause I see the pro pencil hover feature displaying the layer images as a big advantage over my M1. Less reflection might be the feather that makes me push the ‘PURCHASE NOW” button.
I made a new video that goes into more detail with comparisons: ruclips.net/video/KEq2Ybb8PKA/видео.htmlsi=hSMm4aNgA_FyxCfV
I have an Ipad air 4 and I have never had a touch issue, pinching or rotating..
Thank you!!
Happy to help!
Have fun!
Thanks so much! That’s a grim “weeper” done by Bo at Only You in Atlanta.
Do you think You will want a screen protector to protect the screen?
Nope, I love it just the way it is!
Why so much delay when you are drawing? Never had that issue, at least on Procreate and Affinity Apps.
Is an 11 inch iPad large enough for digital art and drawing? The 13 seems so large to take it places..
I think it can be. My partner is an illustrator and she uses the 11” air. I have a new video coming soon where I compare a few different iPads and sizes for drawing specifically.
I still use my 2018 ipad. Is it a big difference whit the new one?
The iPads have been overly powerful for a long time so even the early ones are still very capable. The new features aren’t a dramatic improvement but there’s a lot of stuff I really appreciate like the hover features with the pencil, and the squeeze feature pulling up menus in apps with save a lot of time. I also love this new display.
I feel you 😂 I’ve been doing the same exact thing with the same purchase but I chickened out last minute and canceled the nano and bought the standard glass
Haha it’s a reasonable decision for sure. I’m just reckless/impulsive. But I am happy I got ot
Is the pressure sensitivity more consistent or not? My guess is it is not but really would love if they did improve it. As good as Apple pencil is, pressure sensitivity is not as great as wacom when trying to do digital painting, it gets blotchy unfortunately..
What software do you use? I never felt it less pressure responsive to Wacom
how is the durability of the nano screen?
Only time will tell, but I'm not worried.
Awesome video Chris! Random question - do you use a specific LUT with your videos? Or do you just use the color profile that’s in the camera?
Thanks! I just do some color correction and subtle grading manually when I’m editing. Every time I try to use a LUT it looks crazy, probably because I don’t know what I’m doing, lol.
How does it feel compared to your old one without a screen protector? Thanks!
It's not as textured as some-but-I hate drawing on the glossy screen. I love drawing on this screen.
hey i got a couple questions if you don't mind answering
1. how does the nano texture compare to stuff like paperlike for example? (in terms of the friction on the pencil when drawing and that feeling of paper)
2. I've heard the nano texture that Apple adds to its products is VERY delicate and it can be damage by as little as using a different micro fiber cloth to clean it, so I'm wondering if this one is just as delicate? since it's gonna be used for drawing this worries me
3. oh and one more thing! does the nano texture wears off the apple pencil tips? I know products like paperlike are like sand paper on the tip of the apple pencil so it needs swapping over a few months, how does the nano texture compare to it?
1. It's not as textured as some-but-I hate drawing on the glossy screen. I love drawing on this screen.
2. That criticism is in regard to the old Studio display. This display is different, so that's all speculation. If a cloth could damage it they wouldn't be letting you use a Apple Pencil on it.
3. I imagine they will wear slightly faster than a bare glass display, but nowhere near some of the more aggressive paper texture variations.
@@chris-piascik thank you for answering!
That’s reasonable!
I'm curious how the apple sounds on the nano texture? Does it sound like you're drawing on paper? ✏
It’s pretty quiet not much sound.
Great video, Chris. Exactly what I needed.
Glad it was helpful!
