I don’t know about Apple, but I’ve DEFINITELY been using the term “pro” to distinguish my art from amateurs, and enhancing it’s value for several decades 🤷🏾🎨
thinking getting one of these, 11 inch or 13 inch.. still can't decide.. however the m2 pro 11 inch is very tempting, the price is alot cheaper, almost 90% cheaper than the m4 11 inch ( i'm from indonesia ) .. i will used it for procreate and watching movies.. that's it.

Thanks Adam! You brought up some interesting points in your review. Click and hold haptic squeeze for the colour picker would make it a lot more useful. I'm going to give the pen a try with some grips.
I got the same M1 iPad that you have as my primary art tool, and it does the job for me. I've got young kids running around so I can hide it out the way, then when things quieten down I can just pick it up turn it on and draw.
Haha, 100% I know exactly what you mean. Sometimes the ultra small and minimal setup can be really useful. It's all about the actual utility.
To get ahead of some of the keyboard warriors in the comments. I used the word "amazing" precisely 20 times in this video... Maybe the Steve Jobs reality distortion field is still in effect!
I have a Cintiq 22 and bought the new iPad Pro (had a 2017 Pro). And yet, i keep going back to my trusty Intuos L simply for the fact that i can sit however i want in my chair :D In the end the tool that makes you want to draw is the one you should use.
100% ! There is something to be said for the ergonomics of an Intuos style tablet!
I didn't mind the ad, just the price
The ad certainly employed some flesh and blood creative professionals! You can imagine the high concept expensive agency work involved! Better than a bland demo showing some fake artists working in fake studios... But yeah these things have somehow become really expensive.
Consider the Minisforum V3, I got one and is amazing, is not as thin, but it won't bend, plus the CPU is just as fast as the M4 at 20w, how we the AMD. 8840u can go up to 28W stock and 37W if you want to let it run at higher temps.
The GPU is a beast, it will give better performance than a Lenovo legion go, since it's it is not thermally constrained. And yes it's faster than the GPU on the M4
Full magnesium alloy body. 2k 14in screen 19:10, 165VRR, 100%sRGB, 100%P3,90% AdobeRGB. So it's a super accurate display. It's not OLED but it's definitely one of the best IPS panels out there.

@@dzibanart8521 I understand that, except for the display how am I gonna use all of ipad's hardwares. That price should come with not only hardware but also the software. Like he said in the video, they are using pencil 3 as a bait, and I'm not happy with that.
I can’t be mad at Apple or anyone else for what they charge, because I charge MORE than they do for my art 🤷🏾
Fortunately, no one is making podcasts asking if my art is worth the price or not.
No one is asking if my latest paintings are upgraded enough, from previous work to make them worth acquiring.
The art either resonates with patrons or not. It’s as simple as that.
I use the same criteria when acquiring Apple devices, clothes, or even other artist’s works. 🎨
The price is whatever the price is.
If I want something cheap, I’ll buy a poster, dine at McDonald’s, or shop at The Doller Store

Better technology won't necessarily make you a better artist.
At this point, technology is more than good enough for most standalone, drawing and display tablets. And I still have to say that nothing beats analog drawing and you don't have to spend much. Cheap copy paper and a #2 pencil or Bic ballpoint pen still gives a better drawing experience.

Getting a reeeeeaaaaly nice sketchbook game going is still way cheaper than any of this stuff.
That’s like saying Mozart could make beautiful music on any instrument … ya but why would he when he could use the world’s best instruments?
I used to think that way, but the option to use layers really adds an extra dimention to creating art that simply isn't available using pencil & paper. I think that alone makes digital art a game changer more than anything else.

i recently got the m2 iPad so I'm glad to hear its not all that more fancy then the m2 otherwise it would've made my purchase redundant... and I cant afford that lol.
Its still too small a thing for me to spend that kind of cash on. I use a 22" Wacom display at home on a desk, with a big rig and use it for 2D and sculpting. I too still use my old Intuos occasionally and it's fine.
An iPad might be fun to sketch on, but I can get a larger Samsung tablet (and use Clip Studio) with an OLED screen and a perfectly functional stylus included in the price....(and it's a lot cheaper). But I don't think I'd ever want to have a 13" display as my only professional display for work.
Maybe it would be cool to do observational drawing? I think I'll just stick to using a sketchpad though.

loved this review, most tech channels totally miss the point of this device! that said, it feels like you made the same point 5 times before moving on to the next point
this format feels conversational and casual, which is great in a landscape of hyper-edited, attention-span-shredding media, but i still feel like you could have chopped 15 minutes off the video length and driven these points home better, while preserving that organic flow. just some audience feedback ❤

@TheDrawingCodex I couldn't put it down last night. Regardless of the language barrier I found myself tagging along with the most adorable stick boy. You nailed the emotions. I have so many favorite scenes. Your backgrounds are on another level. I don't know what my favorite page is, but the donkey drawn carriage is my favorite piece, next to boy hanging. That was amazing. You even followed it up with the view from window. Lovely. Page 6, when he is carved out, is so cute. I laughed. There is no language barrier for the most part. Awesome. Only complaint is with book binder. They are terrible.
If you're considering the 2024 m4 ipad pro get the 1TB/2TB version, it increases RAM to 16GB enabling more layers in your art programs.
Those ones also get an extra performance core. Can’t never have enough performance cores

You made a point to say how disappointed you were with the new pencil but I think you glossed over what I think is a total game changer and in my opinion, one of the primary motivations to upgrade this year: the squeeze gesture.
The double tap gesture was finicky at best and RSI-inducing at worst, so being able to use the new pencil as if it had a button is very welcome.
Yeah for sure. I haven't had a chance to use it for long. my initial feeling was that it took a bit of force to get it to register the squeeze, and that it might not be the ultimate solution for hand stress or RSI. Perhaps there will be some adjustment possible on the sensitivity.
Now when you double tap it gives haptic feedback which is actually awesome. It means there is no guessing that you have made the change.
My ultimate read on this is that the pencil will always suffer from apple design flaws of form over function. They want it to be clean and neat and like an oldschool pencil. That way it sticks to the side and fits in the cases. Whereas to really use a tool and make it easy to hold all day long for a lifetime... the solutions often end up looking ugly (and customised to the artist's grip and hand).
It also still feels a bit slippery... Idunno... I just think it's not that great of an artists tool... and no amount of features will really make a difference.
But yeah I did gloss over it for sure. I honestly was expecting those features to be better than they were. It's better than the old one... but not worth the upgrade at all just for the pencil to me. Again perhaps the software will take advantage of it later on... if I bought this thing for the pencil upgrade I think I would feel ripped off now.
@@TheDrawingCodexfair points. I’m looking forward to when Procreate updates next month (?) to support the pencil pro and hopefully other apps update soon too.
Btw have you tried changing the sensitivity in system settings?
Watched other artists reviews. I think the Apple Pencil is key again a major motivation for enticing people to stomach the $$$$. To them by hands on, the M4 speed is noticeable.
It would be an easy bet to make that tens of millions of dollars were spent by Apple on market research to figure out the right value proposition to get people to actually buy. They have this stuff dialled in normally. It would be different for different segments. You can see the pro misses with most tech reviewers... But the real purpose of the upper tier pro is normally to sell the middle tier (in this case the Air). And to maintain technology dominance in specs etc. The pen is key for artists... But I think it's also good for branding and marketing the thing as a creative tool. They really leaned into the pen on the marketing side. I think this shifts the focus away from the specs... Which can be pretty boring. I would be keen to know how many pens they actually sell... And how much profit there is in it.
Very nice comment on the new iPad. i work illustration full on iPad. right now have the 2020 pro. I was thinking on buying the new one. But the value is very important as you say. don't know if its better to buy the M2 with more Ram. i work on very big files and sometimes i get a little lag. Maybe it would be nice if you compare the speed of that M4 with 8GB RAM and the M1 with 16 GB RAM.
Yeah exactly. I want to try and test this. It's hard to find a way to properly figure out how to compare as often things like procreate will limit your ability to create files that lag. I'll see what I can do to test. Maybe I'll Synthetic benchmarks just tell us if it's faster... but the question is always does it make a difference for your workflow and the type of art you make.
The Ram does make a huge difference for 2D art I think. I'll see what I can do to test the difference.
Maybe you could do anything if you paired it with tourbox elite which is Bluetooth shortcut keyboard
man, I have a 2019 air and still going strong, A12's performance is perfectly adequate for clipstudio or procreate, but what I wanted was more screen real-estate. I definitely feel you about the thing with wacom being so stagnate. Movink have good features but its too small and it cost same as similar size Ipad Air brand new. I have a 16" wacom and I definitely not going back to a 13" just because it has touch and better cables. I think apple should give them some real competition and make a 15" already, lol.
Which screen size do you recommend for artists - 11 or 13 inch ?
Very good video man👍 I have been thinking whether to get ipad air M2 13" or ipad pro M4 13" for about a month now. Your video really helps. I was good with digital art using computer+mouse before. I never used wacom and recently discover the potential with ipad+pencil pro. ipad pro M4 13" is way too expensive for me and I'm afraid that 8GB of ram will not last for long term. Getting 16GB of ram one will require you to pay an arm or a leg for it, I think I'll put that into consideration once things are cheaper. To make matter worse M4 chip is a very powerful chip, but it's still limited by the ipad OS. I decided to get ipad air M2 13" for now.
Have you tried the 11"? im debating whether to go 11" or 13"
You mentioned how OLED is powerful if you look at creating art for ‘digital first’. Have you thought about how this this might slide in with VR and spatial video consumption?
I'd be more into buying one if it was sizes like the wacom range.
Regarding the OLED standard: the first *modern* (appreciably OLED, TADF emitter devices) were in 2015 and 2016. The technology is nearing 10 years. Apple contrary to belief rarely embraces technological fads with flagship products like the ipad, and lets the industry lead for some time in terms of specification. So when the new ipad pro line is OLED only, and the technology for contemporary OLED devices nears a decade old, you can bet a sizable _majority_ of devices going forward are adapting to OLED and HDR specifications or atleast analagous specs. We are in the age of newer, more color-aware screens, and remaining digital companies will follow suit swiftly if they haven't already pivoted to OLED or QLED or QDOT; color accuracy is by demand the hot issue and will be for some time.
What the above word salad means is that this higher digital color standard is rapidly reaching majority and will not be going away. That, above all else is this new ipad's selling point, as otherwise the various digital art apps will not be seeing an equivalent efficiency increase when comparing price-to-performance-ratios to even a 2020 generation ipad Air.
So if "future proofing" your digital art so to speak is important, this device will acommodate you fairly well for the premium. Otherwise, it's a very very overpriced wacom or huion product with best-in-class stylus tracking and decently comparable software suite options. Worth mentioning however is the /separate/ price of a workstation which those other devices would require. Even if you use a screen-less drawing tablet, future proofing for OLED will cost you the price of admission of a sufficient color-accurate monitor (and usually a decent rig to run your sodtware of choice).
Is this new ipad necessary? Well it certainly isn't. Is it a terrible deal? Not really, if you prefer the ipad ecosystem. It's a great art facillitator, and it's geared towards the new wave of use cases we will be seeing.

Thanks for that interesting perspective on the new M4 iPad Pro and Apple Pencil Pro. I get the impression that to you, aside from discernible improvements brought by the new OLED display (which is true of any OLED display), the M4 iPad Pro doesn’t deliver for you. And of all the reviews I’ve seen from the professional artists segment in RUclips about the Apple Pencil pro, yours stands out as the least enthusiastic of all by far. I was very surprised to hear opinions so diametrically opposed about that device. It just goes to show how important it is for an individual looking to make an informed purchasing decision to try and test these devices in person and for most people that will mean purchasing it, trying it out, keeping it or exchanging for another version or returning all-together within the return window set by the seller if there is one.
Early reviews for the device never make sense, as most developers haven’t had enough time to optimise for the hardware. The worst experience I had was with the M1 iPad. For the first few weeks procreate could only use 2mb of my 16gb of ram on my M1 iPad Pro. Because the chip was new most apps defaulted to thinking it was an entry level iPad. None of the reviewers noticed, and had to read about it in forums. Eventually some RUclipsrs covered it later. A bunch of my old procreate files wouldn’t open, it was very frustrating. Eventually everything worked but I think it was like 6 months until the full amount of ram was allowed. The M4 isn’t as bad, but outside Apple Pencil hover, nothing feels that new.
The new pencil feels the same. The squeeze is not as bothersome as I thought.
Will it still be running smoothly in 5 years? That's a big part of the value for money equation for me. If I can be productive with it for 5 years then the most expensive iPad Pro would be worth it if that's my main money earning tool. Realistically for me, most of my work is done on a desktop Cintiq/PC workstation. I once had a first gen iPad Pro. It was amazing for a very short time. After 2 years, it was so slow that I didn't want to bother using it anymore. Unlike with a PC, I couldn't just install older software on it. Everytime Apple updated the OS, it got slower and slower so I never bought another iPad after that. I still miss Procreate.
What is the Samsung 14.9 inch one you like? What is the best drawing pad or tablet you would recommend period for a novice who enjoys painting in oils but getting a bit old for the clean up? What would you recommend if I could print and sell my work? Thank you.
I have a question. Do you get those hooks after making a brush stroke on Procreate with the M4? I've gotten so many of the mini hooks that i wonder if either my pen or iPad is defected. I do not get those on the M1.
I get them in Callipeg, but haven’t had it in Procreate, Art Studio or Infinite Painter. I think it might be a software thing?

It's interesting you talk about doing really great looking artwork and finding it was outside the colour gamut. I found this a headache as a graphic designer.
What's the best way to prevent this problem? Do you just have to set the document to CMYK and just work with the available colours?
I have never actually worked in CMKY at a document level. I always use RGB and then convert to cmyk for print (some blending modes and color adjustments work differently in different color spaces). I use soft proofing in photoshop to check the colors. This normally also simulates the black point and gives you an indication of what it will look like on a given paper stock.
Some comicbook colourists I remember did use cmyk from the beginning and were really focused on keeping the lines in the K channel and a bunch of other really specific techniques.
After a while I got better at figuring out what is likely to print well and what will turn to mud. With art it's probably different as often images can start ok but will get either too dark and grey or too bright and colourful later on when we adjust everything.
I think Clip Studio has some kind of soft proofing as well. Procreate seems to be digital focused.
@TheDrawingCodex Hey, thanks for the really detailed reply. I really appreciate it. I've never been shown how to colour proof or even heard it mentioned as a final stage in the process, which is bonkers. It looks like a skill in itself, and I guess that's why comic books have colourist.
I'm so big picture that I'd rather pay someone to do it rather than get frustrated that certain colours are just not possible in CMYK. It's a shame about ProCreate being RGB focused because I find the interface so intuitive. I know a lot of professionals use Adobe Fresco for one-off work (rather than comics).
If I did want to produce a comic or even a 1 off piece and I wanted to hire a colourist, is there somewhere you would recommend where I can post an ad or look for collaborators?

Which ipad model that give memory warning when you open a GB (large image file)? Can ipad pro M4 handle that with 8 GB Ram? What's the largest image file it can open? Have you recreate those large image file with vector graphic file? It should be able to make the picture file smaller. I really wonder how close vector graphic art will look compare to the rasterize image file with recent vector graphic software technology?

That was a bit worrying to see, but I think the issue was he had a lot of effects and stuff on his layers clip studio doesn’t normally read. He said it shouldn’t be an issue if you creating from scratch. It’s very interesting to see, most iPad reviewers never load up a big project, just make an afternoon sketch and say this entry level iPad can do pro work now.
Is this the nano texture display? I'm trying to do some research on this topic specifically to decide whether or not I should upgrade from the M1 iPad Pro.
This is the normal display. I would really need to play with the nano texture before buying one. Lots of questions about how well it would work for drawing. Personally I have trouble with the textured screen protectors and they way they make the picture look. I suspect this would be the same.

Microsoft just announced the new Surface Pro starting at $1000, keyboard ($350) and pen ($100) are sold separately. It is powered by the new Snapdragon X Elite chip, which is supposed to be competitive with the M3/M4 chip and offer similar battery life. I can't justify the Ipad Pro given that the Surface Pro is a full blown computer.
Yeah that sounds good! I saw a lot of students using the Surface products and they seemed to like them. I haven't had much luck with windows pen tech or tablets (The Huion Studio 16 I have here seems to be fighting windows ink and it doesn't seem artist focused...) But maybe it works better with a 100% Microsoft device. It will be interesting to see if the new windows based mobile style chips will compete with M4 etc in terms of speed and battery.
After my GCSEs I’m looking to buy an 11 inch iPad Pro, I was wondering if it is worth also getting a monitor so I could use an external keyboard and mouse with the monitor and iPad while at home at my desk, but then I could just use the iPad when I’m at school for example. What do you think? Is there any point also getting a monitor?
I don't have any experience with adding monitors and extra things to my iPad setup. My feeling personally is that if I have to add anything I might as well sit down at my computer.
Some people seem to use these extra features... my worry is always that it could be buggy, or not as easy at it seems to use a device outside it's key functionality.
BUT there are a lot of rumour/wishes that Apple will put Mac OS on these soon. and allow you to use it as a laptop. But who knows.
The Samsung s9 ultra I talk about in this video has a thing called DEX that can give you a desktop style experience with an external monitor... but I found using it to be slow.
So best bet is to find someone who is really doing exactly what you want and see if they have found any issues. My problem with all of these devices is that one little thing can ruin your workflow, and often there is nothing to fix it. Compared to a full desktop where there are often many solutions.
Many people seem to be embracing the portable only lifestyle. I find having a proper desktop gives so much more power and ability when working professionally. Much of it depends on exactly what you are doing though.
I use my Tab S9+ with a monitor, mouse + keyboard. It's nice to have and it gives you extra room to put references and videos on. You can find a decent portable monitor under $200.

The 'Workstations' I have are just powerful windows 11 PCs. The key is to focus on what parts will actually make a difference to your style of art (3D, Game Dev, 2D, etc) And don't install anything besides the apps you use or things you really need.
The one I work on most of the time is:
Motherboard: Gigabyte Z690 AERO G
Intel 12900k (noctua nh-d15 cpu fan)
128GB of DDR4 Ram
Storage:
System - Samsung 980 pro 1tb
Cache (for photoshop): Samsung 980 pro 1tb
Files: samsung 980 pro 2tb
Graphics Card is an Nvidia RTX1660 Super I think.
This is a few years old now but does most of what I need (easy to have many comic pages open at once in photoshop etc)
The key is lots of ram (doesn't need to be fast, just as much as possible), and having multiple fast storage drives (one for windows system and apps... one for cache...one for files to be saved to)

You can normally get a local computer shop to build it... if you are not technically minded. I started building PCs a long time ago so even though it's not a good use of my time I do it all myself...

I got a ipad, the pencil and all that.. but I'm struggling to make anything look how I want. I am definitely not an experienced digital artist, mayne my brush selection is bad? I don't want to give up on it as I can see how awesome it would be for my graphic novel stuff, but man the learning curve for me lol..
What apps are you using? Getting a simple process that works is the first step. Just try find a pencil/brush that works first and stick to it. Try adding color underneath your drawing. One step at a time :)
@TheDrawingCodex procreate mainly. I've drawn traditionally for ages I think I'm just overwhelmed by all the crap you can do with the program, plus the learning curve of drawing on a screen (even with the paperlike cover its weird). Any brushes you'd recommend just from the defaults? I've tried the procreate pencil one and a few others, can't seem to find one that clicks. I'm gonna keep at it tho... I want to use it to create some of the crazy crap in my head, haha 😆

My current mental battle is do I want the 13inch or the 11inch. I have the 24' wacom which is big enough, just wanted the ipad for sketching and to try do more shitty kinda just sketchy art, just not sure if a 11' will be fine
I think the 11 will be good for that. Lots of people have been asking this question. I'll make a video soon comparing them. I thought initially that bigger was better but there is something super functional about the size of the 11. I find I want to drag it more places.

Haha :) Yeah it's pretty crazy.
That one I built last year for video editing specifically (normally I don't put expensive graphics cards in because it doesn't make much difference for Photoshop/2D, but an RTX 4080 has two AV1 encoders which makes a big difference to video export times)

I normally upgrade once there is a significant boost in performance with the same price point. But the other workstation I have which I do most of my art on was less expensive than this (much cheaper gfx card) and it only has 128GB of DDR4 ram... and it still does what I need.
Being able to now get 192GB of ram in consumer grade systems is pretty good! I find the ram is the most important thing for the work I do. As it's good to have multiple files open.
Or I upgrade when it seems like the computer has slowed down due to system bloat etc.
The time it takes to set up a PC is pretty significant. I normally find I lose a few days of work to the process so I try not to upgrade that much. And I have gotten into the habit of spending more on each system so that they need upgrading less often.

I feel like its too expensive man... 2.2k is a price of a pro tool but I feel like you can get many pro tools for that amount of money. I honestly don't know what Apple would have to add to the iPads for me to decide to upgrade from my M1 12.9 iPad Pro.
Maybe if there was a way for them to make your old iPad slower you would upgrade...

No. Old Apple Pencil doesn’t work on the new M4 and New iPad Air. Only the pencil pro and USB-c Apple Pencil works mainly because of the change of front facing camera

Totally agree, everything I read says OLEDs burn in and degrade over time, even Apple talk about it, puts me off to be honest. And has Apple designed the IPad to be repaired and can the OLED display be easily replaced after a few years of use if the screen does degrade? me thinks not
I think this is a low risk. In general people have been worried about this for ages and many tests have been done. The newer OLED tech is better and less likely to have those issues.
But yeah apple wants you to upgrade in 3 years... So it's not like they are building it for a lifetime.

why the nib is so fat? It is beginning to bother me now the screen resolution has gone too high. I will check out a third-party apple pencil nib that has a narrow pencil-like nib.

I chose the Apple iPad because back when I didn’t want MS Windows nor the non-touch or need for Cintiqs $$$$ bulkiness.

Apple seems to be a great tool, but I prefer windows tablets to have the ability to use more apps, I think that's what limits apple iPad to some degree

This display just looks really good to me. I have the S9 Ultra and a Samsung OLED tv. The new apple one just does look a bit better to my eyes. It seemed to perform better outdoors too.
But yeah it's classic apple late adoption.
There would be no reason to buy this over the ultra for the screen.
But OLED is still really slow on adoption. I feel like everyone was saying even earlier than 2009 that the world would go OLED and it's taken ages to get to this point.
Display tech in general for artists was looking very grim until apple started marketing their displays as IPS... Then everyone jumped onboard IPS instead of cheaper TN panels etc. So it's good they are adopting this as it will push everyone forward.
