- A new series focused on model railroad operations, while highlighting different layouts across America along the way. We will be following a Utah Belt Export Loaded Coal Train across america. In part 1, we look at John Parker's BNSF Fall River Division and many of it's unique operations.
A big thank you to Matt Gidley and Bradley Meers for contributing photos and videos of the Utah Belt!
Merry Christmas!
Josh
Unbelievable, incredible detail.
Great Series Pt 1 Josh!
As always, the photography and narration are simply phenomenal.
You are quickly becoming the next Allen Keller!
Patiently waiting for the next installment!
This channel deserves way more attention, love watching these and listening to you explain things
Gorgeous layout with a real story ! I kept all the articles and photos from Model Railroader. Great to meet again !
Very effective low angle shots !
Great angles and shots - making it easy to forget these are model trains.
I have always been fascinated with model trains.. 👍 Awesome layout
Hello from the UK, this layout is absolutely stunning
The dude that has motivated me to model NS is doing commentary on the UB, the model road that led me to step into freelancing? This was an "Oh Sh*t!" moment.
The layout is Incredible, the narration and the sound effects were Terrific!...GREAT material!
Can't wait for more!
I love the real train sounds.
That shot at 10:52 is incredible!!!!
Josh, your editing and sound overlays are great.
His videos are first rate!
Wow! Excellent video. Great job and Merry Christmas to you and your family!
Impressive and very enjoyable!
Young man, you have done a very fine job, not only honoring those who came before you, but your own layout is quite the fine achievement. Two things: first, as a real railroad engineer, I don't understand why some people cut off the simulated air hoses on their Kadee couplers? If they are not going to add those little rubber hoses with the magnetic gladhands, it would make more sense to simply leave the originals as they are because it looks more realistic than having nothing but knuckles between the cars. Secondly, this hobby - sadly - has turned into the polo of hobbies (rich mans game). Most parents, and young people, simply cannot afford to purchase all the materials needed to have even a small switching layout, unless they surf the pages of eBay and start off as I did in the analog world. Manufactures could change this, by simply offering kits where the consumer must install everything but the running gear. Again, you've reached another level, and we look forward to your next presentation...
Has to be one of the most realisitic model RR's I've ever seen. Mr. Parker has been blessed with extreme talent!! So, so scale and beautiful, Bravo!!
The UB has been an inspiration since I was a kid reading about it in model railroader. I've always loved how the railroad is "current day" and has a story. Fantastic!
Same, I still have an issue of Mr from October of 2000 or so I think? (I wasn't alive when it came out, but I picked it up for free at a train show) but it actually includes a layout that is in conjunction with brooman's ub
The MR article on the Utah Belt back in the mid-90s was one that I remember reading as a grade schooler with amazement ! Still one of my favourite MR articles!
I read about it in Railroad Model Craftsman, back in the 80s, when I was a boy, and the UB was running SD40-2s with F7 helpers. What a remarkable legacy this model railroad has become!
Was that the Brian Kanis RR?
I love it when the trains tell a story.
Especially this one on its big trip across multiple layouts
I also love the actuality of the video. The trains and the environment really make it realistic!
This is a fascinating video series! I have always been impressed by the Utah Belt and continue to be inspired by the Fall River Sub. Looking forward to Per Larsen's layout. Your camera work is good and your sound dubbing/mixing is very effective. I live near a BNSF mainline in Nebraska, so I know what the coal trains sound like.
This totally feels like a actual train video with narration but with models
I LOVE IT!!!
That layout is a work of art! The attention to detail from the flashing light on the road warning sign to the cracks and tar on the roadway. Just an exquisite piece of model railroad architecture. I hope to one day to have a layout that emulates that level of detail.
John is definitely a talented modeler and has a great eye for detail! - Josh
Sweet, man! Love these videos. I’m also really excited to see Per Laursen’s layout too! Do you plan on doing a layout tour there also?
It’s always great to visit these layouts. The realistic operating speeds and great camera angles really bring them to life! Good work.
Wow!! Just wow!!
As a railroader myself that was so well done!! Both the video, editing and dialogue, and the layout has to be one of the best in North America!! Well done to both of you!! I can’t wait for the next one!!
Cheers
Wade
What a beautiful and highly detailed layout. Josh you did a great job with the Utah Belt power. The chipping of the lettering was a very cool detail that I had not seen on a Utah unit before. I am assuming at some point you will be in St Louis at Eric's home? I look forward to his comments. It would be cool if you could include something in this series for Allen McClelland of V&O fame, as he just passed away a few weeks ago.
Absolutely flawless track work. Mr. Parker's work is an inspiration.
I love your guys thinking this video series is going to be awesome to catch up with and to follow thanks again for the brilliant and clever ideas on this channel as always y'all have a nice evening.
@ 14:45, the trees along the original Milwaukee Road route are so tall now that they obscure the trestle.
Very cool video Josh, I always enjoy your narrative. Can't wait to see all the layouts you visit!
Josh, Super cool idea! Thanks to all those layout owners who are participating in this realistic operational video series!
Love this concept, what an interesting and unique idea. And you've managed to get some of the premiere layouts to showcase on. Great job!
Merry Christmas to all from the Grande Pacific Railroad
Excellent! This is going to be great. Really looking forward to watching tis series. Thanks for all you do for us.
Love your video. The sound effects are remarkable. If I didn't know they were model trains ,I would think that everything was real full size, ouside looking at it. Wow ,great job
The "Diner" with the flickering "E" is brilliant...
I’m probably the only person who wishes these videos didn’t have sound overlays. The editing is great, but the sound of the models would be much more satisfying for me. And then you have the wonderful sounds these nice models can generate from their speakers… I understand why you do this but it breaks my “immersion” into the layout and if I wanted to hear real trains I would just go watch real trains. Had to say it
You have definitely progressed in your video capture techniques there were some scenes that almost hit the real-world video. Keep up the great work and we'll keep watching.
Excellent! Wish they ran this way for us for real.
Great scenes on that layout! Merry Christmas Josh!
Thank You Eric.
I LOOK FORWARD TO EVERY MONTH THAT MODEL RAILROADER COMES OUT, HOPING FOR AN INSTALLMENT FROM THE UTAH BELT.
The Paint Scheme of your Engines is my all time Favorite!
I can't even imagine how much this cost him to build I was looking at purchasing a train just for my Christmas Village small inexpensive train was $132 what he has for his display is freaking amazing this is something I honestly would be willing to pay just to be able to visit and see it
Layouts of this high standard and magnitude go far beyond being about trains and scenery..........this my fellow railroaders is pure art in every aspect.
There are but a few modelers blessed with the talent and patience to be able to present to us mere mortals a miniature world in which to escape the toil we face every day.
Many thanks and kind regards.
tones1957 (New Zealand)
At 15:09 I noticed that the engineer ran through a red over red signal indication..... probably had dispatcher authority...LOL
might of been a slight oopsie in the signal program or the dispatcher control
Super nice Josh! Great work!
Nice. why does this kind of look like some Australian train liverys
Outstanding realism ! Best sound effects I have heard and long wanted to hear from a model railroad.
Fantastic presentation! Excellent blend of prototype sounds, music overlays, and well-thought-out narration that didn't come across a cheesy. The entire production is top notch! Reminds me of the old "Trains On Location" video series from the late 90's by Kalmbach/Trains Magazine. Can't wait to see more! A+ on this one!
Love the way you did the audio for this. Lots of work but so much more enjoyable than listening to a recording of a sound decoder.
I think I saw Bigfoot at the 18:27 mark?
It was so great I had to watch it again. What a great tribute to Eric. Merry Christmas to you and your family.
I know it's fictional and am not too prototypical but we would put at least 1 FNBS engine on the lead.
BNSF having a power shortage? No...Maybe crews unavailable...😝💪
Beautiful painscheme! Great shots! 😊
I really find it hard to believe how realistic the BNSF fall river division is. John is definitely a talented guy and I have been inspired by John and his fall river division and also your NS Asheville district layout both layouts are so cool my layout is showing the CN and Cp in about 2017 also fictional rail lines just like the BNSF fall river
The Utah Belt has been one of my Favorite Layouts to see in MRR.
Now seeing this Fantastic Video is the Icing on the Cake.
Thanks for capturing the almost Realistic Action.
The Scene with Smokey Bear, or is it Smokey The Bear?
That looked particularly interesting that I told the wife to keep her eye on the Picnic Basket.
Yogi and Boo Boo will try to steal it.
Funny anecdote, my wife’s nickname was Boo Bear when she was young.
Would be cool to bring those up to Montana on the Mullan Pass Layout of Kirk Thompson's.
I want it's 2nd 3rd part
What PPLX( Pittsburg Power @
& Light) trains originate out west? I didn’t know PPLX cars are used in export service.
I tried to nitpick any inconsistemt detail I could find with this layout but can find none. For me, this is simply flawless.
Have probably hauled some of frac sand to locations. Just kidding!!!😂
Young fella, ( by that I mean no disrespect - I have underware older than you ), you and your Dad are predicious team of modellers. If you tell me that such and such railroad is the best or most desirable, most watched or requested then I follow on because of your recommendation. Merry Christmas to you and your family andd loved ones, I pray for their safety and good health. Whatever you have been told, don't stop the content, sparing as it is, (we know you have work commitments), it inspires those of us who dream. Best wishes for the future, Paul.
Thanks Paul, ... and we appreciate your prayers. We wish you a Merry Christmas as well as a Great New Year!
Tom Clark (Dad)
Very nice video! Very realistic. We, here at Tomar Industries, are very impressed.
6:38-is that a state boy sitting there chatting with a buddy?or a sheriff?lol..can't tell ✌️🍻
Nice layout, good job.
It would be cool to do a video of like at the start of the run a morning dusk , then day light & at the end night dusk.
Do you talk about is probably appeared in model railroading magazines more time since the late seventies and I can count
Very nice work both modeling and video work. Looking forward to the rest.
I wish I had a way to dub in sounds from steam locomotives in my vids like this!
A very great video. Could watch even longer. Since layout is very realistic. For this five stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Nice video: thanks 4 sharing!
@ 1:35 there are 2 covered hoppers. concrete? what is the story?
Great video, great layout looking forward to seeing more
What type of tracks they are using? Code83 or 100
some of the video looked real except no tag graffiti on the cars. See it all the time on cars in Cheyenne.
Perfection. One of the best I've seen. Thanks for the inspiration.
This is a fantastic series. Wonderful layout!
Do you have a image of your layout? or How you came up with it.
If only the real american train lines were as organized as this
How long does it take to build that and what would you guess how much cost is in that ?
I remember the first time I seen this in model railroader. Fantastic
Great job on the video Josh keep up the good work. 😊
Thank you!
Question how you buy ho scale dummy trains
i am speechless! wow! wonder how long it took to complete it.
Incredible video Josh, looking forward to more!
Thanks Greg! Hope you and your family are doing well. Come visit sometime!
Merry Christmas - Josh
Awesome! Thanks for posting it!
Great video Josh, absolutely loved it look forward to the next part
Thanks Jamie!
didnt eric brooman have the Utah Belt?
Great video n details what locomotives in the video
Good video Josh and good edit with the prototype audio.
So you can make up railroads in HO scale even if they don't even exist?
Yes u can. That's call freelance. U can make ur own railroad. Or u can do a proto-lance where u can model a company but thr track plan and layout is completely freelanced. Whatever ur imagination comes up with. Let it run wild
Beautiful layout👌
Man everything looks so realistic a imagine that when you working for the railroad or go out railfanning that’s how would be like that
I’ll give John the model railroader 1.000 out of 1.000 🎉❤ I am going to build my own layout just like this one
I Love the Utah Belt!!!
It has been my favorite Model Railroad with the Cat Mountain & Santa Fe (David Barrow) coming in Second. I liked his Domino Benchwork.
Thanks for the Great Presentation and Tour of the U.B.
Simply amazing, beautiful and fantastic!
Love the U.B. Engine Color Scheme and seeing the Unit Trains running
Very Professional Production IMO
Great narration!!
When I get my issue of Model Railroader and it has anything dealing with the Utah Belt, I know I’m going to have a great day!
Just Love It!
EXCELLENT VIDEO! Especially the audio. Incredible layout.
I would like to see Athearn or Scale Trains offer Utah Belt ES44, and Sd70aces. I'd buy them.
what do you clean your train track with?
A really Impressive and highly detailed video - thanks for posting. All the best and God Bless. 🙏❤🇺🇸
What an incredible video! I had to keep reminding myself that this was a MODEL and not actual live prototype action. The attention to detail was fantastic. I fully expected the crew trucks to drive off after the crossing signals stopped flashing. And even the telephone poles looked so real that the wiring they held was busy transmitting phone messages. And the flashing red light atop the switcher waiting in the service yard was genius. Great job all the way around! Pentrex couldn't have done it better!
I bet it was so fun to film and edit this!
Absolutely magnificent and realistic railroad! Great video work and narration and brilliant job mixing in real sound into the video. Top notch!
very, very cool
Well done sir. Exquisite imagination and layout of the builder, and your camera work adds so much realism with those low angles and realistic viewpoints throughout. Hard to beat the combination.
Where do the Car sounds come from ?
Eight & Sand Boys 💯🚂
