Great video. From a modeling standpoint, John has a camera that looks into the empty coal cars at Black Butte. This part of the layout is just high enough that you can't see into the hoppers without the camera. John occasionally places a trespasser that the crews need to look for and then call the superintendent to report the person. Added interest for the coal load area. Great fun!
Another great video Josh! Always looking forward to your videos. John Parker’s BNSF Falls River is an incredible layout & he is just a nice guy. I am honored to call him a friend. He is always a gracious host when we visit him.
This layout is a big part of my inspiration. I’m from Colorado, so some of these locations are what I’m used to railfanning. Glad to see someone appreciate the mountain west operations as much as I do!
What a great way to spend a few minutes of my evening. What an incredible layout; the stuff of young men's dreams, or even overgrown boys, lol. Thank you for sharing this with us.
This in my opinión is the best modern day layout I've ever seen... Just one suggestion, an open view of the hole loading complex would have been nice... Getting a feel of the hole area... And also a coal spill in all the loading tracks Will be realistic, loading areas are never shine and clean... And Will also give a clue of what that complex is about... Great video anyway, thanks for sharing...
Thanks for the kind words. John has done some incredible work on this layout. Check out my previous layout tour video of the layout if you want to see bigger panoramic views of the entire layout and different scenes. - Josh
That first scene with the coal train being loaded/unloaded in the loop, outside Houston there’s a gravel loop and I always catch them unloading with a backhoe treading from one car to the next. Looks like it’d take all day to do it but it’s always interesting to see a full train ina loop in full view as a local runs past. There’s a dog food plant I think a few miles past it with a couple closed bay hoppers and usually the same bluebox car being put in and out of it. And it goes along the highway. This layouts one of if not in the top three best modern era layouts out there. And although I’ve went from a bnsf heritage nut to a mopac early 1900’s heritage coastal Texas small steam nerd I still love me some pumpkins warbonnetts and then cascade green diesels pulling long strings
Just outstanding does not get any better than this has to be the best layout ever. Will you guys ever be in model railroader or have you already been there not that it's a great magazine but at least it'll get you some more exposure. Keep up the great working keep the videos coming. Gary
Great video Josh! Did you ever get to checkout Acme Cinematography with John Rust? Railfan Dan's vid's are great Cinematic works also! Keep'em on the rails!
The sounds are edited in afterwards. If you listen closely, they're not a perfect match. For example, at 6:45, you clearly hear one locomotive (a GE) come past the camera, but the train has two DPUs (a GE and an SD70).
Hey John, all the decoders in the video are LokSound v5, however, real train sounds are overlaid on top of the existing video sound for realism. I wish we could get decoders to sound that good! Josh
What a stunning layout, and beautifully shot. Though was the camera left in auto-focus mode or something? Many of the shots seemed to have weird focussing issues. Particularly noticeable at 2:09, for example. Anyway - not a criticism, just letting you know.
What's weird at 2:09? The locomotive's in forcus as it should be. Shallow depth of field means that the foreground's not in focus, but that's completely normal when you put a camera close to something small.
Hey Ed, the entire video was shot on the fly during an operating sessions so I couldn't use tripods or stabilization devices like I usually do. But thought id share anyways!
@@beeble2003 keep your eye on the stop sign / crossing post while the train rumbles past. It jiggles about and even appears to 'stretch' horizontally throughout the shot, and not because it's actually moving. That's why I suggest it's a camera artefact - the camera seems to be struggling to figure out what to focus on, while the camera is itself jiggling about only slightly (less than the sign is moving). It's not what's in focus as such, just that what's in focus keeps changing. Anyway, this is all coming across as critical, which was not my intention. I completely understand that Josh was filming on the fly.
@@ep1981 I think it's just not quite in focus because of the shallow depth of field that results from having the camera close to the subject. Any such effect would be more noticeable on the stop sign and crossbucks, as they're high-contrast regions of the image with sharp boundaries.

I love watching model trains crawl along at a realistic speed. Trains zooming at breakneck speed just look off.
Another great video Josh!

Love the attention to detail! First class!
That's one beautiful layout! Great job guys.
Tons of detail added to loading area since last time i was there now 3 years.

Well done Josh! I really enjoyed the video,
Thanks Bryian!
Beautiful Layout !!!!!
Seeing coal operations irl is boring but seeing it with models is actually kinda cool

Josh you did not check for hoboes in the empties before loading. Assume you put loads in the cars.
Arthur! you bet I had a close eye on the camera monitor! haha None on this trip.
Yay, a video, you always make the best
That is an awesome layout!
Very Cool! Kind regards from germany!
Nice layout! Video is well done!
Thanks for sharing
Great layout! I miss the automatic water sprayer after the loading process! 😁
Nice job
Really nice! This is my dream!
Very nice video!
Cool layout, divide your total trailing tonnage by overall Horsepower that will give you the HPT (Horsepower per Ton) 😏👍
Awesome love the backdrops
Josh if you don’t mind me asking, where did you get your kits for the coal operation. Thank you!
Very nice!
The sound effects is exceptionally realistic, are they broadway limited locomotives, are you using a sub woofers? I enjoyed this video.
What do you think of digitrax decoders

What is the software used in the video? looks interesting, does it control the switching and lights as well?
Super👍👍👍 Herzliche Grüße, Toni
Wow, that's sweet
Great video Josh!

Keep'em on the rails!
We used to go .28 mph to bottom dump the coal cars. What a looong day it was
Pretty sure the train was run through the flood loader _much_ too fast in the video. Shouldn't be any more than 1mph or so, I would have thought.
It was definitely fast, but I didn't want to bore everyone. haha
What kind of sound decoders is he using!? Sounds very realistic!
I'm almost certain most of the sounds are actual train video sounds....
The sounds are edited in afterwards. If you listen closely, they're not a perfect match. For example, at 6:45, you clearly hear one locomotive (a GE) come past the camera, but the train has two DPUs (a GE and an SD70).

Nice shots, a beautiful layout
If only the produce express was still a full unit train in real life.
Great vid
Josh, Acme Cinematography has an update on Sand Patch.
Do yourself a favor.
Nice layout, in H.O. scale. However it would look good in O, or G scale...

Salade bowl express.
You should do a roster update
Josh, great video, as always! I sent you a PM as well, so maybe check your spam/junk folder. Thanks!
Hi Modeller, do you have an image of the layout design? I would like to model this layout in Trainz Simulator.
Awesome
Very well done, but when referring to the dispatcher, give them permission to enter the main track its authority not permission.
do you ever shop at hobby town in ashville it does not have much
Usually not unless we need something small in a hurry... Not good pricing.
Where did the coal train go
Could somebody give me some advice as a young model railroaded I gust started a new youtube channel
Somebody needs to do a full layout vid update so we can see the whole thing
Check me previous videos! I already have one up!
The layout please?
First of all great vid secondly no on cares if your first
🤣🤣🤣
One and You're
Either first or you’re last 🤪
It's always best to come in first.
nice
Great video!
I love coal trains, but where I live we don’t see coal trains
Is that real or fake coal in the cars
that is a terrific looking layout. I hope you do more on the coal traffic and follow that train to its destination,
More videos on Coal operations are in the works!
Josh
@@nsmodeler24 how do you get your locomotives sound so realistic
Just filmed bad enough to not be able to see if there are or not drivers in any of the cabs, or any of the filling operations.
interesting watching these videos knowing I load coal trains at work. and that up has the laziest operators
