Make sure your air is up to par. Air hose also. Lots of particles of debris will come from a broken down hose and air quality is huge on clean paint/ high gloss. Don’t really get that super flat finish????? Painting at multi brand dealership for 35 yrs. Lots of peel in all brands. Look at dodge ram trucks for example….. flat high gloss against factory finish looks bad. Peel adds durability!!! Keep on rocking it out trigger man, enjoy your stuff…👍

YES! On adding reducer! I'm just a DIY guy but I'd rather learn to spray it unreduced than deal with the various issues using reducer. It just makes good sense.

That’s why I don’t ever use 4-1 clears. They always shrink, dieback, and don’t last as long. I’ve sprayed 100s of clears and my favorite is nason 465-00 and it’s a 2-1 high solids. It’s very affordable, looks amazing, and I’ve seen my paint jobs with it look perfect 15 years later of full weather exposure. I have never seen anything else come close it. If you want cleaner less static paint, try putting carpet in your booth and clean your panels with alcohol. The alcohol is a must on a raw plastic bumper.

Another great vid trigger. The trick with those wipes is just use them once. After you clean panel. Wipe panels and plastic down then tack rag as usual. Also work great on bumpers especially raw factory bumpers bumpers.

Back in the Lab with the mad scientist! Very helpful tips Trigger! Iv been told reducer is a necessary evil. The vehicle That flows the paint to the panel. Plenty of flash time between coats before clear coat to avoid solvent trapping/popping and metallics moving around under the clear coat. Avoiding excess reducers with the right guns and activators is the way to go! You Know your stuff Brother! Your way is the right way for those who want to do the job right for a long lasting repair. As far as those static whipes not sure on those ,I use ppg 103 a alcohol base product put it in a cup after you clean it blow it and tack it ,spray the 103 over your paint suite and over the area or part you are painting it works pretty dam good,works really good on plastic parts

Because they are brain washed and they learned to paint at RUclips University. I know way back when I spray PPG they had a cleaner that was anti-static I forget the name of it I'm sure it's changed names since then this was like 2005 2006ish And it did work very good. So more reducer in darker base coats and use higher solid clear coats with no reducer to avoid die back issues. Got it! thanks bro. I bet that putting your base on heavier like you do actually helps you achieve that final flatness. Kinda like when you drench a hood with the water hose and it looks like smooth glass. I like the way you spray man, thanks for sharing.

Ive got some carvello clear thats 3 part with reducer. I really don't like it though. You can always raise air pressure a little and get closer, move faster. It will lay down thinner and smoother. If you haven't done this, clear something before you try it on a car so you can get your stroke down.
Yes that works as well That's what I was saying in the video at the beginning I would raise the pressure I would do something but I'm not adding no reducer. The car will look great for the night 😅

Nice job man, nothing wrong with the way you put the base on, i use to put on solvent like that, im a heavy painter, most water base is applied in one application. i have to have water base in england if i want to buy solvent i need to prove that the car is classic and we can't have solvent paint schemes in anymore
With them wipes i don't know about but if you had cleaner jobs before i wouldn't bother, if it aint broke don't fix it
I know what you mean about adding thinner causing die back, if it doesn't recommended it i wouldn't add it or if it does i only put the right amount in or i half the amount i never over thin id just warm the clear up, the only thing i over thin is HS Direct Gloss as it like trickle over here because of the VOC content legislations most of them on the data sheets have 5 to 10% thinner and to be applied in one coat to comply but i would add another 5 to 10% on HS direct gloss, MS lays down a lot nicer

Then you my man. Us old schoolers know that it's ok to put base on heavy, is the guys that learned how to paint watching RUclips those are the ones that are not certain. But for guys like us that have been in the trenches for decades we relate. Anytime I try to over reduce direct gloss / single stage I run the entire job 😅 That stuff is tricky especially if you're not paying attention to the weather/temperature You can have a really bad day or week depending on the size of the job 🤪

@@thetriggerman954 definitely man get the base on there wet, I understand where you’re coming from with working 2 booths I was in a bonus shop for about 8 years and I’d team up with another painter one week prepping one week painting so I’d be smashing it on one job and painting another job while that base was drying 👍 Single stage can be hard work to get right, it’s either you could strike a match on the finish or it was all on the floor 😂

I paint the same way. Never had an issue. Get nice smooth base that way, gives you nice smooth clear. I did production painting for airplane parts for years, hammer on the paint. Finish the last part, back to the first part. Two coats of base, three coats of clear. Three sets of sixteen parts a day. Your paint jobs look great.
Exactly 💯 wet flat base = wet flat clear. Will not automatically but you have a better chance of getting the flatter overall finish if your base is sprayed flat and wet. Thank you for chiming in my OG paint brother 🫡💪🏼
Very nice finish there Mr Trigger Sir the finish from the gun is superb, I don't see how anti static wipes can work as the more you wipe a panel with a cloth the more static you can put into the panel and even more so with plastic🤷♂like you I don't have a stat gun so the best thing I've found is a water based cleaner or even IPA which will help reduce static then when you wipe it don't wipe to fast as that can cause static🤦♂
I think we all need to find our own process for cutting down on nibs as it will differ depending on your booth, extraction and climate so there isn't really any one way that works for everyone👌🙏👍John UK

Wish i never added reducer to my clear when i painted my car, got a good amount of die back and peel...recently sprayed a new bumper for the car after you said about no reducer and it came up much better and held its gloss and less peeel
Yes man, I have to keep preaching that guys are sabotaging their work by doing that. I get messages every day on IG guys asking me what happened to their clear and they add 10%-20% reducer 🤦🏽♂️
Hey Triggerman, I use anti static dryer sheets and wipe down my panels.
I know that work in the dryer, so not sure there's any reason to pay a premium for those..

Thing that REALLY boils my hoop, Trug, is the fact almost all the "Third World" can buy Akzo Nobel Akstar primer - it's available everywhere there. That primer is the absolute bomb as primer goes. Can we buy it here? Nope. Nobody sells it. We get all the absolute junk primers in our so called "First World Country".
Or take another simple "Consumable" - Upol Fibral lite filler. Brilliant filler, works great. Can we buy it here? Nope. Upol don't sell it in our market, apparently. We ain't worthy.

I bought Sunmight sandpaper, and it is hundred times better than the usual stuff we can buy here in Sweden. I think its because of environment laws. Some primers and paints are a lot better because they contain forbidden ingredients. We use to have an extremely good primer here that contained led, but it was super toxic

I’ve tried those wipes. They sent me a big pack. I found the same thing. They will actually reintroduce dirt into your job like a dirty old tack rag. I found them to be counterproductive same way you did. As for your base I don’t see an issue with it. I hate it when people dust a thousand coats on because they’re afraid it’ll run. End up with base feeling like 150 grit sandpaper then they wonder why the finish in the clear is so shitty. The smoother your base the smoother your overall finish will be. Fuck the haters keep up the good work.

For Tacking down before u apply base coat from dust it's ok for us DIY garage guys that's it.Trigger man for u zero need so that car with the nibs in the paint that was a cut and buff yes wet &dry 2000 wet then a polish compound I guess.Love the work u do
I am surprised some of the old timers have not suggested to put a bounce dryer sheet in your tack rag i did that a lot especially with corvettes if it was bad enough we would hook jumper cables to the frame and to the ground there will be a lot of naysayers but it worked
I've heard about the chain grounding to the floor. And one other guy just mention today about the dryer sheets. That was definitely my first time ever hearing that. I mean it sounds logical I just never heard it before And I've sprayed a long side a lot of old timers.

I always used denatured alcohol to kill the static.. this was way back. I'm sure they have much better shit nowadays lol. This was back when we used siphon cups
Yes I've used that as well lot of guys I know still do it that way. My first primer gun was a siphon spray gun made by Campbell Hausfeld😅

When I first started learning how to paint, I used to put reducer in my clear , and within 2 years all of those paint jobs failed. The reducer destroyed all the UV protection in the clear. Ain’t no way in the world I would put reducer in my clear coat again! 😂

Yes I'm well aware of that as I was coming into the trade that was slowly phasing out the painter that I replaced at this shop 11 years ago they said he used to do it. Till this day I still try to wrap my head around how that shit works but from what I hear it worked great. But I'm definitely not climbing my ass up under a car hooking up chains 🤣😅
Learned hard way not to reduce clear that doesnt have it in mix ratio. Now i dont even reduce single. Years ago i did work on ground support equipment for American Airlnes. Fleet color blue. My paint rep from Finishmaster told me guys that paint UPS trucks dont reduce clear. How did they get it to flow? My rep got me a 1.6 tip for my gun. Worked great. Got to adapt to the product or else the product will make you pay

I have a bad habit getting heavy-handed on my first coat also sometimes causes paint reactions and sometimes I get a little too happy with the clear and you already know what happens lol
You need to clean that panel better. My panels are cleaned 4 times 3 times before it even comes in the booth then again in the booth. We go through lots of grease and wax remover. But also never have an issue. But the clear I didn't go crazy with. Runs give me nightmares 🤣😂
Trigger there is nothing wrong with stacking the base on heavy as long as the temperature is high, I’m a painter in the uk and when I apply it heavy it doesn’t work out because it’s only 55 - 60f in my booth even with fast reducer 😂
I know that, but these guys get on me about it. They learned differently on "RUclips" so my way seems foreign to them. They are taught to put on baby coats as if they're painting a paper towel 🤪🤣

Spraying Diamont, 411 on our clear. Never tried to take out reducer. Always mixed it according to tech sheet. Unfortunately have to use sealer more than I care for. No matter how much primer I load up, between the pinholes and the bodymans blocking removing primer. We used to block their work. Now its just no thanks, maybe you should be responsible for it.
Now if your TDS says to add reducer then that's 100% fine with me I use diamont clear back in 2001 I can't remember the ratio on it but that stuff was sweet they used it at the Chrysler dealership I worked at Awesome stuff I'm sure it's improved even more.
Those static wipes work like static cling dryer sheets you use in your dryer for your clothes. Same concept.
That's what they are saying but that thing attracted more dirt lol. For the hell of it I might try the dryer sheets lol

I’ve never had clear die back… is that common? My clear is mixed 2-1-1. So mine always has reducer. I didn’t know the reducer could do that! The dungeon 😂 I feel that! Your jobs looks pretty damn clean from what I’ve seen.
That's good You have never had dieback your clear coat calls for reducer so you're good. Lot of these guys try to take the easy route and add reducer but it just ends up being the long route 😅

Warm it up? 🤦🏽♂️ Man it's already 100° or hotter in the booth lol But to answer your question no I have never done that nor do I know anyone that has ever done it.
Haha okay 100 is pretty hot so that would have the clear pretty thinned out. What speed hardner did you use for this job?
There's something I really wanted to know, is there any product you would recommend using on fresh paint to protect it (like some sort of sealant that's silicone/wax free)? I have a penelshop and we want to give the customers cars a protection coat over the clear but I’m not sure if there is something to use on paintwork that hasn’t fully cured yet? Any advice would be appreciated. Something temporary would be great too as long as the gloss stays intact and the clear doesn’t get scratched when the customers gets their cars washed.

Trigger I thinks all them static wipes are cloth saturated with isopropyl alcohol! I was able to find some 98.6 percent pure isopropyl alcohol at my local hardware store it was left over from the Covid days.
I hAve some 99% I got from the beauty supply store. But the wipes don't work at all man 😔

I always solvent clean first then water base clean. The alchohol in the water base cleaner seems to keep the static down for me. I use axalta based products. VS1000 for solvent and then VS1100 for my water base cleaner. Idk works for me. Never seen the wipes b4....

Thank you sir, and no I don't believe in tried that one. The one I tried I did not care for at all. $300 I think I'd recommend that prd 715 or 627 instead. Those guns will give you a finish that looks 10 times better.

I have a 26gal compressor I think it’s around 4-4.5cfm at 90psi. I know it isn’t the best but would you recommend any specific gun for this compressor setup? really wanting as smooth of a finish as I can get with no sanding ( cus everyone hates sanding ) 😂 oh and 1 gun for base and clear if I can get by with that.
@@BSevenly sounds like you need an HVLP spray gun. And for the price range you're looking to spend nothing that I can say I recommend for the finish that you want. Your best bet is maybe one of those R500 spray guns You're pretty limited on selection my man.

Our clear is like $170 with discount from supplier vs over grant 7 $300 but for some one looking for quality clear and doesn't mind paying for it it good. And it's shine too. I mean I've only done those few jobs with it so my experience with it is limited. 🤷🏽♂️ Just keeping it 💯

I mean if you like shiny clear coat don't use reducer if you like your clear coat to almost look like a matte finish and reducer 🤠😲

Good info! I can't lie. I've done the reducer route a few times and didn't figure out what I was losing gloss to until I read about it later on. My solution, considering overspray is a big issue, was to stop using high solids clear. I've gone back to medium solids, and the results are better, plus there's no need to have a rowdy spray gun.
I think we all have gone down that route the important thing is learning from it, I get messages from guys sending me pictures of their clear coat the next morning looks like it was supposed to be a matte finish lol But what did you do oh I added 15% reducer 🤷🏽♂️

I paint the same way.. mine started from doing industrial stuff like metal skid frames.. like u said tho once u start doing it u get used to it.. I'm gonna try the anti static wipes.. been doing my dash pieces for my truck and after I sand primer I get hairs n everything else sticking to it like glue.. or what would u suggest?
You can try the wipes, maybe you'll have better luck, all I've ever done is wipe the panels with water, drenched rag. Before all of the "water based cleaners, we just used water and it worked fine. Company saw that and then made a product to sell.

Hard to say that man. There are tons of good clear out there. The one I use is AM-TECH it's pretty good not the best but you can get a good finish with it. Here is a link incase you want to try

I use AmTech clear, it's a product by Prospray. Spraying it 11 years now. No issues

What clear are you using and how does it do air drying ?
I use AmTech clear. Product by ProsPray. And it does great with air drying finished product you're looking at is air dried I don't have a bake cycle in my booth. There's a link in the description for the clear in case you wanted to read up on it, check the reviews and whatnot
What lvlp gun do you recommend for clear?? I have the r500, a610, and a inokraft drizzle….i like the 610 and only used the inokraft once…so i cant call it, the r500 i basically use for primer….but i have mulitple tip sizes for all 3 guns…..i have hvhp guns too but i shoot in my garage with a 20 gal compressor so lvlp works best for me
I recommend lph400 I personally didn't care for the a610. The R500 would be my next choice if on a budget

That's right. I have every Sata series they've ever made. I just don't have the SATA tattoo like some guys 🤣🤣 I have a few other things lined up to try for the guys out there to help with static. #TeamSata👊🏼

It's varies on experience,certifications etc... Flat rate commission $15-$23 per hour. Same goes for salary.

Just started painting cars 6 months ago did 20 jobs no reduced clear mirror finish and listened to the asshole premp guy and reduced clear and had 3 bad jobs in one week, l never reduce clear now.

No shame in reducing your clear, it's to reduce your expectations. To match the factory paint. To match the other guys paint who painted before you. To replicate the UV wear, you dig? Maybe you're making a RUclips video. Go ahead pour it on. You can even reduce the reducer with more reducer. I heard.
