Mazda cars are so classy, their designs will stand the test of time years from now. Can't say the same for some of the competition that tried too hard to be different.

My wife and I bought the first edition way back in late 2012 and we still have it 92,000 miles later. Prior to that we had the Mazda CX-7 (which sold us on the Mazda experience). Our Cx-5 is getting long in the tooth now and we're hoping to change vehicle later this year. I recently drove a 2022 CX-5 courtesy vehicle from our local dealership for a couple of days while ours 2013 model was getting serviced. It was the 2.5L with 186HP so 30HP and 30lbs torque better than ours.
So, I got a good comparison of how the CX-5 has evolved. First thing I would say about Mazda having owned them going back to 2006 is in my experience they have great build quality and reliability. We've kept up all the maintenance services over the years and our CX-5 has never faltered once in nearly ten years of ownership.
They are great daily driver for people that don't need the space of a midsize or large SUV. As Andrea pointed out the sporty handling and easy maneuverability are strong points. The steering is well weighted and it's easy to know where the wheels are pointed. If you like that overly boasted light steering feel look elsewhere.
Some improvements and differences I noticed with the 2022 CX-5 courtesy vehicle over our 2013 are; The extra 30HP in the newer base engine is considerably peppier than our 155HP engine so the 2.5L with the 256HP must feel decently quick. The steering wheel leather is softer and more premium feeling, the seats are much better cushioned and more supportive, the material quality throughout the cabin and especially around the dash with the large info screen and more modern center console is a lot nicer. There's a lot less wind and road noise compared to ours and although the suspension is on the firm side with the newer models it's much smoother over bumps, road imperfections and expansion joints than our 2013 model.
Although our CX-5 has the outdated touchscreen I still would rather a touchscreen or at least the choice of it and a rotary knob to use the info screen. The trunk space in the newer models is also noticeable smaller than the first generation.
Overall if you enjoy driving, want a bit of sporty handling in a very reliable and upscale feeling small SUV it's hard to beat the CX-5. They may be a small company but with the CX-50, CX-70 and CX-90 on the way Mazda are continuing to put out very competitive vehicles. I just wish the new future models were coming out sooner!

Seats are a little on the firm side on my ‘21 Touring, but you get used to it. Could use more bolstering and actual lumbar support on lower trims, but you really can’t complain when you get safety features, same 10.25” screen, push button start, radar cruise and safety sense, and leather wrapped steering wheel standard.

Just wanted to thank Zack and Andrea for this channel. We bought a compact SUV in early January and used Motormouth and one other great RUclips reviewer to narrow down our search. Especially enjoy their different viewpoints. We got a 2021 CX-5 Carbon Edition Turbo. Didnt get a '22 because in the US they dont offer the Turbo except in the highest trim lines, so we were able to get the Turbo for around $33k (US). That was important to my wife - she loved the way to the Mazda drove and the power of the Turbo, and that it was an affordable option to a X1/X3 or Q5. It seems with this review perhaps Andrea and Zack arent quite as positive on the CX5 for '22 as they were for '21? Is that because this generation is showing some age, or upgraded competition from the Tucson and the Rogue? Thank you Motormouth - really enjoy watching your reviews.

I like both the 2021 and 2022 models, I would buy either in a second. I feel in this review, we wanted to point out that this type of firmer suspension and heavier steering may not be for everyone. It is exactly what I like and I think it's one of the best in this category. But, we all have different preferences. Thank you for the kind words, I am really glad to hear that our reviews have been helpful in you narrowing down your decision. You picked a fantastic vehicle, LOVE that turbo engine.

I absolutely disagree with you. If Mazda is the boutique hotel the RAV4 is the Holiday Inn. I have driven both vehicles extensively. The RAV4 feels very cheap. The glass is thin and cracks very easily. I cannot express how noisy it is. Mazda feels expensive , quiet and composed. For build quality the Mazda takes the trophy; it is built in Japan! The RAV4 is built in North America. Even the Lexus NX is built in North America… and I am sure the NX is noisier than the Mazda as well. Some of the most unreliable vehicles built by Toyota used the 2.4L engine in the past.

I just trst drove one of these. It was a 2021.5. It drove really well. Very refined feeling but a bit tight on room. The engine felt good but not as powerful as I expected. It rode well. Firm but controlled. Then I went and drove a 2022 Subaru Forester. I immediately liked the Forester better (and I love Mazdas). Here's why. First was visibility. The Forester felt so open and airy with huge windows. Second was the ride. The Forester handled all bumps much better and smoother. Third was the dash layout. It was easier to navigate and use. The engine wasn't as powerful but peppy enough. The cvt didn't bother me as much as I thought though I preferred the Mazda transmission. I wanted to love the Mazda but the Subaru won me over.

Starting to shop for a new vehicle and I like the looks of the Mazda (CX-5 and CX-30) better than the Rav4. I am passed the age of starting a family, more at the stage of this could be my second to last vehicle... usually just 1 or 2 of us in the vehicle plus a dog. I am currently driving a 2011 Kia Soul, standard transmission, so I prefer the feel of heavier steering over light power steering. Wondering if this would be better for me than the Rav4 (and slightly cheaper is a definite bonus)..

I just bought my 2022 CX 5 carbon edition two weeks ago and I love it. Had a 2019 Rav4 but wanted something with a nicer interior and better handling. I got both with this car. Plus it is much quieter and the engine shifts so much smoother than my RAV4. I liked my RAV4 but really like the Mazda more. Yes the cargo area is smaller and no touch screen but only took me about two days to get used to the dial and I actually like it better. The RAV4 did get better gas mileage though about two miles to the gallon better. Definitely drive both to see the difference. Both are great choices.
