Purchased a 2021 Mazda CX-5 Turbo after watching your past reviews. It is my favorite car that I have owned so far. Thanks for the detailed honest review! Been watching you 2 since the "Motoring/Driving" TV show on TSN. Keep up the great videos!
I’ve always enjoyed your reviews with the “nightlife” segment. It seems pics of nighttime interior and exterior lighting have been omitted from many reviews. I’d love to see the segment included in all of your reviews. … love your reviews and your channel!!
I have a new Mazda 6 with this same engine, and I don’t think that Mazda really has any competition. The click of the switches, the double pane windows, the feel of materials, is considerably above Toyotas and Hondas and VWs.
@@kermit1 the accord is a better seller. I happen to have an accord in my driveway. I own both. And there is no comparison as far as a drivers car. As far as quality. As far as uniqueness. I got a new 2021 Carbon Edition CX5 6 months ago. It looks and drives great. Nice, smooth, quiet ride that feels more like a Euro sedan than a crossover. The fit/finish/ materials used are really up- scale too. I love the exterior color with 19inch black wheels and the red leather seats. We are a family of 3 and the CX5 is a good fit. The Mazda dealership has been excellent with both the sale and service too. So in a nutshell I have been very happy with the CX5.
I have a 2020 CX-5 GT turbo and it's the best vehicle I've ever owned. If it got wrecked or stolen today I'd replace it with the exact same thing and I've never said that about any previous cars. Other brands I've owned were: Honda, Acura, Chevrolet, GMC, Audi, BMW, Lexus, Hyundai and Genesis. I also really like the rotary dial for the infotainment controller and hope Mazda doesn't get rid of it.
Andrea & Zack great review! The 2022 Mazda CX-5 will be arriving at West Coast Mazda before the end of the year. Lots of updates - AWD is standard, new front and rear design moving it further upscale, new Sport Design trim, Signatures will come with the black plastics color matched! We are excited
West Coast Mazda. Any changes to the seats? Might just be me but I couldn't find a comfortable seating position in the 2021 or 2021.5. Probably the only thing that held me back from purchasing.
A brand often overlooked. It's a shame. Ur review is on point. Andrea has great taste. Zack ur buying advise is super smart. No idea why the CRV sells more? She got no power. Good job team...we want a blooper real please, without beeps!!! Cheers from MTL.
“Jinba Ittai” .... is the term used to describe the symmetry (the balanced connection) ... when ‘the horse and the rider become one’. I’m not so sure I see this design language/philosophy in this particular Mazda, BUT ... the CX-5 is at the top of my list when considering style, drive and ‘bang for the buck’. $10,000 cheaper than any plug-in or hybrid, quieter than most, great materials and fun to drive. What’s not to love? Sorry ... Bank of Toyota fans. Thanks for another excellent review! Cheers.
The biggest thing missing from the CX-5 (and other Mazda models) are hybrid options. 22/27 fuel economy just doesn’t cut it. The CX-50 is getting a Toyota-sourced hybrid option that’s used in the RAV4 and I think CX-5 needs it too
I couldn't agree more. Buying a new vehicle by February and unfortunately the CX-50 hybrid will probably not be available. I love the CX-5, but the biggest obstacle is MPG. As we move electric, the least that should have been done was to offer a hybrid.
@@garytaylor3999 perfectly said. Sadly I think you’re right. I think the non electrified cx-50 will just be starting to hit dealers in February. Who knows about the hybrid :/
Too much to ask for a PHEV but wow it would be amazing with the turbo on this car. I'm so disappointed that Mazda is being dragged kicking and screaming into electrification, this would be a no brainer car if it was a hybrid of any kind. As it's not I find myself struggling between this and a Tucson PHEV.

I got lucky and found a 2021 carbon turbo, for sticker, with red interior. It’s still in Japan and I won’t get it til mid January. I jumped on it because I’m getting a lot of money for my 2014 CX5 with 100k miles on it. And next year the carbon won’t have the turbo or the Bose stereo, both of these things are pretty much all I wanted in the car anyway. The carbon looks are a bonus.
The wood trim accents mimic the Katana sword blade and is a very subtle touch. The high end interior with it's smooth simplicity makes it really stand out. I just bought the Mazda CX-5 Premium in Deep Crystal Blue Mica 💙 and I absolutely love it!
I have 2018 Mazda 6 Signature and very happy wit it...I drove the CX5 but the 6 was just much much more fun to drive, I'd rather have the CX5 but the ride of the 6 won me over...but I'm one of the few who appreciate the 6 bc they are no longer making them.
great review folks..I am with you Andrea..am smitten by the Mazda brand...and these are the best looking SUV's on the market for my money...price is not terribly out of the way for what you get..if we are in the market for one...top of my list...enjoy
Mentioned this on Instagram. I test drove a cx5 21.5 recently and went in concerned about the lack of a touchscreen but realized I could live without. What surprised me was that I couldn’t get comfortable in the drivers seat! I think it was the fact that the seat didn’t tilt up as much as I like. Drove a Bronco sport (no tilt adjustment) and found the same issue. Never had this issue before 🤷🏻♂️
I love CX-5. But its infotainment system is definitely feeling outdated, when it compares to newer rivals. The same as CR-V. I have tried to new Mazda3's system, it has improved so much that it has become Japanese carmaker's most efficient system. At least, IMHO. So I think CX-50 and next CX-90 would go the updated swift system. Other than that, CX-5 remains my favourite compact SUV.
I've been driving Mazda's from 1973 until this year. I test drove the GT Turbo. I found city gas mileage quite poor. Was around 13L/100KM average driving around the North Shore of Vancouver. Lots of hills here. I really like the power, but it seems smaller inside than my first generation CX5, which was great on gas, but lacking in power. So I took out a non turbo GS. Lots of features too, but the power wasn't that noticeable from my 1st generation CX5. Better mileage, but I wasn't sold on it. Ended up buying a late model RX350 for around $8,000 less money, and a lot more features and a lot more roomy. Gas mileage is the basically same on the highway at the GT Turbo, but a bit more in the city. Only bad thing was it is used. But being a Lexus, I've had no problems at all and I don't really expect any. It doesn't drive as sporty as the Mazda, but I don't really care much about that any more, being an old b@!tard. LOL
So agree with Zack…too much glass on top is too much light…I leave mine closed 75% of the time…and to not have to constantly clean a touchscreen is a big plus…a control knob is a great option!
I bought my new CX-5 last year, my 3rd Mazda! Great styling & driving dynamics. I consider this between a Toyota RAV4 and a BMW X3.... None of the other Japanese or Korean compact SUVs look & feel close to a German.
I drove 3 Mazda 1990-2010, ( 626,pick-up B2000,Mazda 6) and the last ten years, Drove 3 Nissan ( Altima,Sentra,QASQAI) so I’m ready return to Mazda feeling with CX5 or CX30!
I'm buying a car next month..I do love Mazda...torn between CX5-CX30 Crosstrek and CorollaCross.....all I intend to haul about is me and camping gear. I have found it hard to get my hands on Mazda's with roof racks. Its easy to spot some aftermarket setups...I love the racks on Subaru and even my BMW Wagon. Thanks for your reviews I always come away with something USEFUL to consider.
Was going to buy a 2021.5 CX5 GT but couldn't get a satisfactory amount for my current car so I never pulled the trigger. I really did and still do love it. It would not be my only vehicle, as I still do like cars as well.
Awesome review on CX5. I always find the colour and exterior looks slick and sexy. Interior is good. Nothing to talk about this awesome vehicle but not surprised a few things missing like wireless charging. Cheers! 👍🏻👍🏻☕️☕️
I have a new 2022 CX 5 with premium trim, including 19 inch wheels. I am very pleased with it, truly a Mazda convert. I am getting nearly 25 mpg in town driving, but I still feel like I am always at the gas station. I think this must be the smallest gas tank I have ever seen on a car (15 gallons), which contributes mightily to the feeling of poor mileage. I would have preferred an 18-20 gallon tank. I also think a hybrid option would be a plus.
The Rogue gets a turbo soon which makes things interesting. I don’t think it will be enough to keep Mazda from selling a pile of CX-5s and CX-50s. The RAV4 isn’t even in the same league. My wife’s CX-9 lease ends in July 2022. I think we’re ordering a CX-50. Mazda is on a mission!
Zac, I agree with you ( rotary knob vs touch screen ). Question, have you tried to making changes on a touch screen when driving on an undulating or bumpy road? It’s a definite challenge. (Lol) No problem with the knob over the same road conditions.
I grew up on VW for the drive, style and value for the money. I wish their Tiguan was like this. Once I can afford it, CX-5 Turbo it will be! Currently own a Mazda5 which has been flawless.
Are the CX 5 and CX 30 on the same platform? Understand that the CX 50 platform is based on the CX 30 and may have the same rear suspension? Would like to see Mazda using some hybrid tech. Toyota?
I test-drove a Signature CX-5 in November 2021. There was much to like about it, but the infotainment screen was tiny and seemed very 2014 to me. It had no 360 degree view feature. Obviously it was not the 2021.5 model, of which I knew nothing. Inadequate cargo capacity and mediocre fuel economy with the turbo engine were the deal-killers for me, and still would be. Ordered a Hyundai Tucson PHEV instead (which I hope to get before summer 2022 arrives). But I can see how someone with different priorities would love this vehicle.
I considered the 2022 Tuscon Hybrid but the interior was so tacky. The killer was the touch screen being placed in the center dash instead of at the top of the dash like Mazda. The blind spot camera that turns on when you turn on the blinker was super cool though.
I have a CX5. My next car will be a CX5. I really don't give a ... about the touchscreen or the moonroof. However, I do care that it has the highest safety rating and that it is the only compact suv yo get a good rating on the more stringent side impact test. I drive country roads and I love the fact that I can now see deer on the side of the road. Fun to drive, reliable, safe, good aesthetics...
Great review… You summed up everything perfectly that a consumer who loves to drive wants to hear. We picked up our CX-5 GT turbo 4 weeks back and love it. Drove many of the competitors but the steering, feeling of stability and agility plus the engine kept me coming back until it was the final choice. Your consideration vehicles I can only say Nay on the Nissan (Jatco) CVT and Nay to the Hyundai engines with their decades old fault. Great review!
Very impressed with today’s Turbo’s Took a 2.5GT Turbo out on a drive. Freeway and Hill work and my wife has never driven a Turbo machine before. Back in the early years of Turbo Charging. You would have normal Engine power till around 2000 RPM. Then you would feel the Turbo kick in and hang on. Today’s Turbo’s operation is more like the Superchargers More even power under hard acceleration. Very very impressed by Performance
I took a 2020 Mazda CX-5 GT Turbo out for a test drive (first time ever driving a mazda). I really liked the steering and info system but the driver seat was uncomfortable. My guess is I have been driving the entry level Honda Civic for years, (on my 2nd one) so my body must be adjusted to that type of seat. Good review.
Yea Andrea! Mazda gets better and better, and I get more and more loyal. I no longer have any interest in Audi. My next Mazda will be a signature trim. No turbo engine for me. My priority is an elegant, upscale cabin. This is it for me!
CX-5 has always interested me, especially when it came out originally and had an available 5spd manual that got phenomenal fuel economy. Can still pick up some used ones with sticks fortunately. Interesting review. 👍
Just had a 2021 CX-5 non-turbo as a rental in Toronto. Have to disagree about the base engine because the powertrain was easily confused and it was obviously that power management was a big issue because of the 6-speed auto, to a very surprising point actually. Also road noise from the side windows was surprisingly excessive starting at 80 km/h and the CX-5 was not equipped with winter tires. We were quite disappointing with the drive experience. Interior was nice. Audi Q3 still has a better AWD system than the CX-5 and would be a big decision factor for me although I don't like many other aspects of the Q3.
Horsepower is okay. However, I love the low end V8 like torque. It's useful (and fun) even with regular fuel. Even with so-so factory tires, it's a quiet vehicle. I still have the smaller infotainment. I guess I'm used to it... 🙄 Awesome review!
I love the cx5 hopefully we will buy a second gen in the spring. 😊 I like sun roofs but the car care nut thinks they’re a bad idea because the place where it leaks out rain etc can get clogged and then water can get inside your car. I want one anyways lol I’ll just be careful
I thought this was the new facelifted 2022 model but is not, still a beautiful car and i'm a fan of Mazda as well, the only thing i would love for Mazda to add to their cars is a pano roof.
Thank you, glad you liked it. Not sure when it will be available to us. Mazda will probably have a media launch that we are hoping to get invited to so we can be one of the first to drive it. Looking forward to it.
Hello Folks great review as always. Since, you folks drive a lot of these vehicles, do you recommend a CX-9 GT trim in US over a Toyota Highlander Limited trim? My I loved Mazda however little worried about long term reliability for purchase. Thank you
Would love to hear from Canadian Mazda owners if the company has improved the corrosion resistance of their vehicles. That seems to still be a strength of the premium European brands, albeit with accompanying prices.
Corrosion wise I think they are better than they used to be. At least based on ehat I see everyday on our canadian roads. However it is important to know that their paint ( esp red which I have) tends to chip a lot. So if u dont take care of them by touching up or whatever, then they may rust
Great vehicle especially with the turbo option. I owned a CX-5 non turbo previously, now have a CX=9. Hopefully the infotainment center has improved! Great styling and quality interior, performance was more than adequate with the non turbo version however the turbo performance is impressive. Interesting they are coming out with a CX-50, will there be a CX-90?
@@Mrtellitlikeitis We upgraded because we needed the additional cargo space also the ability to seat 7 people has been of benefit. I found the CX-9 to be a a more comfortable/ quieter ride on the highway.

I drove 3 Mazda 1990-2010, ( 626,pick-up B2000,Mazda 6) and the last ten years, Drove 3 Nissan ( Altima,Sentra,QASQAI) so I’m ready return to Mazda feeling with CX5 or CX30!
Great wristwatch Andrea. Elegant, effective design. Kind of like the CX-5!
Two Mazda’s in my driveway. This next generation of Mazda engineering is going to change the brand in the best of ways.
Awesome, they are great vehicles
I'm buying a car next month..I do love Mazda...torn between CX5-CX30 Crosstrek and CorollaCross.....all I intend to haul about is me and camping gear. I have found it hard to get my hands on Mazda's with roof racks. Its easy to spot some aftermarket setups...I love the racks on Subaru and even my BMW Wagon. Thanks for your reviews I always come away with something USEFUL to consider.
Another great video Zac & Andrea you make car reviews fun to watch🤣
Thank you very much, glad you like them.
Cheers! 👍🏻👍🏻☕️☕️
Thank you so much, happy you liked the review. Thanks for watching!
@@andreaspencer9813 You are an very welcome Andrea! ☕️☕️
Great video guy's. Surprised the Tiguan didn't make the cut
Rogue will get a 1.5L 3-cylinder turbo. I can feel the excitement.
Zac, I agree with you ( rotary knob vs touch screen ). Question, have you tried to making changes on a touch screen when driving on an undulating or bumpy road? It’s a definite challenge. (Lol) No problem with the knob over the same road conditions.
It doesn't harm to have have both..
You guys should get the base models and give us reviews on those. That's what most of us can afford. 😊
Is Mazda going to be offering a hybrid or phev on any of their cuvs? And thanks Andrea for keeping Zack in line.
Very impressed with today’s Turbo’s
Took a 2.5GT Turbo out on a drive.
Freeway and Hill work and my wife has never driven a Turbo machine before.
Back in the early years of Turbo Charging.
You would have normal Engine power till around 2000 RPM.
Then you would feel the Turbo kick in and hang on.
Today’s Turbo’s operation is more like the Superchargers
More even power under hard acceleration. Very very impressed by Performance
nicely done review as usual guys! have a great weekend!
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it. Have a great weekend too!
Hi, when do you expect to do a full review of the 2022 Mazda CX-5 Turbo trim?
Hi there, it's Andrea. Still waiting for it to come in, once it does, we are on it.
I love the car bought the cx5 turbo signature. But unfortunately i am not seeing the MPG as they say we should get. Getting far less
I'm also liking the new Mazda's Wish I can talk my wife into one -Sedan or SUV great reviews
Our 2022 red CX-5 in the sport design (non-turbo) will be in the first week of March. Can’t wait! 🙋🏻🇨🇦
@motormouth which has better front visibility, this or the rav4? Thanks
Yea Andrea! Mazda gets better and better, and I get more and more loyal. I no longer have any interest in Audi. My next Mazda will be a signature trim. No turbo engine for me. My priority is an elegant, upscale cabin. This is it for me!
when are you reviewing the 2022 redesigned cx-5?
Another great review guys! Keep them coming.
More to come!
I owned CX-5 2019 and LOVE IT🙂
great content as always.
Thank you, glad you enjoyed the review.
CX-5 has always interested me, especially when it came out originally and had an available 5spd manual that got phenomenal fuel economy. Can still pick up some used ones with sticks fortunately. Interesting review. 👍
Yeah i had the manual one , it really was good on fuel economy. 6 spd tho*
Is there a way of getting remote start on a 2021 GT…NOT a 2021.5
Or do we have to go aftermarket?
CX-50 and CX-70 are coming soon. Can't wait!
Am I to understand that there is now a leather option for the signature other than the Caturra brown?
Horsepower is okay. However, I love the low end V8 like torque. It's useful (and fun) even with regular fuel. Even with so-so factory tires, it's a quiet vehicle. I still have the smaller infotainment. I guess I'm used to it... 🙄 Awesome review!
Here in the USA you can get the carbon edition in the turbo by the way
Andrea...Blue suits you very well 👌
Thank you! 😊
I have the 2019 turbo gt model and It is the only SUV I will buy again. It is close to a sport car
I love the cx5 hopefully we will buy a second gen in the spring. 😊 I like sun roofs but the car care nut thinks they’re a bad idea because the place where it leaks out rain etc can get clogged and then water can get inside your car. I want one anyways lol I’ll just be careful
I thought this was the new facelifted 2022 model but is not, still a beautiful car and i'm a fan of Mazda as well, the only thing i would love for Mazda to add to their cars is a pano roof.
love the Mazda cx 5. Zach said on his show the other day his birthday is December 13 his. early Happy Birthday Zach. Andrea you making him a cake?
ly
Hello to you both,
I like the Mazda nice looking
MAHZDA 😎 great review, guys.
Its nice but the bottom seat cushions look short with no thigh support.
God I LOVE Mazdas
Nice review! When will you get a first look at the CX50?
Thank you, glad you liked it. Not sure when it will be available to us. Mazda will probably have a media launch that we are hoping to get invited to so we can be one of the first to drive it. Looking forward to it.
I could listen to Canadians saying Mazda all day 😂😂😂
for some reason that pronunciation makes me cringe
Tires are too small , Mazda should update the infotainment system and use a bigger screen
andrea blue color top is so good.
Hello Folks great review as always. Since, you folks drive a lot of these vehicles, do you recommend a CX-9 GT trim in US over a Toyota Highlander Limited trim? My I loved Mazda however little worried about long term reliability for purchase. Thank you
The highlander is bigger, have you driven both?
@@Motormouth... thank you so much.
CX5 Turbo petrol and diesel are my choice
The other cars ops SUVs. Are great but I like the Torque from the engines of Mazda.
I can’t speak about Android auto - but the 2021 CX-5 does have wireless Apple CarPlay - so you can scratch that off your “want” list. 👍
I love Mazda too!
Their infotainment controls should be the new standard. PC monitor screens in car are dangerous and need to be reduced or made illegal.
Would a 2022 Kia Sportage SX Turbo be in the same category?
OMG, the "Hot Topic" was my comment on instagram... yei!
Thanks for participating, great question 👌
Great vehicle especially with the turbo option. I owned a CX-5 non turbo previously, now have a CX=9. Hopefully the infotainment center has improved! Great styling and quality interior, performance was more than adequate with the non turbo version however the turbo performance is impressive. Interesting they are coming out with a CX-50, will there be a CX-90?
Yo Doug I’m thinking bout going up to the 9 as well. Not sure I can justify a 5k diff just for turbo. Thoughts?
@@Mrtellitlikeitis We upgraded because we needed the additional cargo space also the ability to seat 7 people has been of benefit. I found the CX-9 to be a a more comfortable/ quieter ride on the highway.
Need a touch screen, big time. Definitely turns off many buyers. Rented a CX5 recently and couldn't operate radio or other features. Frustrating!
Was the base 2.5 ever reviewed? Im lookin!
Good work peeps
Unfortunately they always give us the top model to show all the features. The base engine is very good, one of the best in this class.
Thank you guys
@@Motormouth... ooh, I would love to see you review the base engine on the CX5
Cool but still waiting for the toyota-based hybrid from mazda. Hoping it's released within the next 2-3 years
Waiting for the debut of the inline 6 platform.
Nicest red paint from any manufacturer
Great review!
Glad you enjoyed it
