Elden Ring Lore - Who Are The Crucible Knights?

  • Опубликовано: 24 мар 2022
  • Explore the story behind the Crucible Knights, who they served in the Lands Between, and where they stand now.
Update: Thanks to our community we now know the location of the 15th Crucible Knight. one seems to have been left behind in Crumbling Farum Azula. this makes sense as we know Godfrey must have traveled here to do battle with Dragon Lord Placidusax. One Knight may have been left behind to guard Farum Azula as a reminder of who brought down their Lord.
The Tree Knight armor set may also have belonged to the 16th Knight as it does not drop from Siluria, but was inside of a chest she was guarding. If we do not find any other Crucible Knights in the Lands Between, this MAY account for all 16 members of their order.
Update 2: The final Crucible Knight has also been found in Crumbling Farum Azula! This accounts for all 16 knights in their order.

It's a shame how we don't really see any of Godfrey's faction, past or present besides the crucible knights. Imagine other warriors like Nepheli from the time he was Horah Loux, or his footsoldiers of when he was Godfrey roaming Leydel when it has been covered with ash and he has returned to reclaim the title. For how unstoppable he and his army was said to be, his only evidence of his might are the 14 crucible knights scattered around the Lands Between.
If you don't read the story, you might even find the Godfrey fight as abrupt and surprising, and even more so when he re-introduces himself as Horah Loux and you remembered the opening cutscene. It would be really cool to see a DLC focusing on the Badlands, where you can find the man before you actually have to fight him.

Because the game is about downfall, not a golden age.
Godfrey was both the first Lord and the first Tarnished: strip of his title, divinity and exiled. His army disbanded, killed, discarded or transferred to the new lord (radagon). The crucible knight was purged for not commiting fully to the Golden Order for example. If we take the intro as literal, then this "exile" is far more than just keeping them in a faraway land. The tarnished are kept in a special form of death to be woken up some day.

I find it interesting that one of the Crucible Knights is guarding a suit of armor, and two others guard a tomb. It's possible that they are guarding the resting place of one of their comrades. Or rather, since Crucible Knights just vanish upon death, the armor is all that remains of them when they die. Since there's such a small number of them, it is possible that they guard those armor sets to prevent defilement specifically because such items would be heavily sought after by others.

Devotion to the status of knight and how that interacts with the image/ the armor is a great concept to flesh out, I think it’s partially captured in the souls games (the image and as you have described never seeing behind the mask), and is some of the best parts of game of thrones. (For instance taking on the black is done for many reasons but the defenders of the wall have to overcome many personal and external challenges to commit to the role) I think in elden ring their power level is appropriate and can wreck you faster than a boss.

It's actually interesting that a lot of these crucible knights are guarding certain things as to prevent others defiling/looting the places that hold some sentimental value. It's a bit similar to the numen black knifes' guarding deathroot chests or entrances to certain hero tombs, just that black knifes appear to prevent anyone uncovering dark secret/knowledge within.

Another cool thing about the Crucible Knights is their names. Those Crucible Knight bosses named Ordovis and Siluria; both are named after real life time periods, specifically the Ordovician and Silurian. Both periods took place hundreds of millions of years ago, which I think plays really well into the lore of the Crucible as this super ancient, primordial seed of the Erdtree from which everything was born.

There is also two crucible knight's and of course the tree sentinel in farum azula which to my understanding is a place without time. Perhaps they got there like us or they have been in farum azula for a while showing these knight's been throwing hands even with the ancient dragons which explain their godly poise. Their incantations are very unique they are not considered dragon incantation even tho they share some similarities also they get buffed by the erdtree seal (did a ton of testing, and yes even tho the seal doesn't say it but it does hint it idk if it's intentional or not )
Tbh as far as the most imposing mini boss I love these knight's design when you saw one you know is about to get real. I know they are noodles to parry, still fighting them is awesome.

    • @DeityOfValor
      @DeityOfValor 2 года назад +1

Well they are incantations and seals have inc scaling im pretty sure that's why
If they fit a type of incantation then there might be a seal that gives them a bonus
For example you can get some decent damage using an erdtree seal while casting dragon incantations because of the inc scaling but it isnt the most optimal for damage whereas if you ised the dragon Communion seal with the proper stats you'll do a lot more

Finger reader that converts remembrances into items, spells or ashes of war confirms Godrick is a part of the Golden Lineage but not a direct son of Godfrey. As far as I know the Golden Lineage has Godwyn the Golden and the Twin Omens Morgott and Mohg but the twins were pretty much imprisoned from birth for being Omens. So more than likely the crucible knight is around Godrick since he's more than likely a descendant of Godwyn the Golden which would explain why Godrick also has the title of Golden. As for the crucible knight in Deeproot Basin it's probably there because Godwyn became the Prince of Death as the first demi-god to die but only in soul. A finger reader nearby has dialogue hints towards that and if you look at the area above Fia in Deeproot you can see a extremely twisted form of a Godwyn as the Prince of Death

Nice video, personally one of the best duels I had in the game was going one on one in the underground world with the trapped Crucible Knight (the one you reach through the Four Belfries).
After defeating that one I knew I wanted to use their armor and abilities for my Faith/Arcane based character (I was already investing in Dragon Communion Incantations so it fit thematically that the Crucible Aspects also feel dragonic).
I was very glad when I found the female Crucible Knight armor set in the Deathroots area and learning the set comes with a bonus to Crucible Incantations, they are truly one of the better designed enemies in Souls Games in terms of both gameplay and lore.

Had some of the best back-to-back encounters with these knights in Soifra Aqueduct - you know how it is, sometimes you're just on point with your timings and responses. So there I was i-framing through those hefty swings, jumping over double tail sweeps; one, plunge attack on the way down, two, tail breezes below, hitbox porn, another plunging attack, dodge that obnoxious f-you shield bash and give him that sweet one-two loving from my hot-and-cold dual wield greatswords.
Comparing that to the abysmal experience I was having with the double-gargoyle-trouble and it was like night and day.

My favorite Knights in the game. I love to fight them, I love how they look, I love their lore, I love using their weapons and shield, I love using their armor, I love using their incantations, everything about them is just badass.
I unironically have a Knight Tier List based on how much I like each faction of Knights in the game and they are definitely #1. For reference it goes like this:
    1. Crucible Knights
    2. Banished Knights
    3. Leyndell Knights
    4. Haligtree Knights
    5. Redmane Knights
    6. Cleanrot Knights
    7. Mausoleum Knights
    8. Gelmir Knights
    9. Cuckoo Knights
    10. Bloodhound Knights
    11. Godrick Knights
I tend to like Factions I can respect or even admire more so while those I may pity or despise based on situation or actions rank lower. That's why those like Cuckoo or Godrick Knights rank pretty low on my list as they're little more than hacks or glorified mercenaries who serve either a joke of a lord or their own selfish interests.

    • @luna7157
      @luna7157 2 года назад +1

It's hard to say how many artificial beings in Elden Ring were made by Rykard as a member of the Carian Royal Family pre-Shattering, how many were made as Praetor Rykard of Volcano Manor post-Shattering, and how many were made by Raya Lucaria Academy during or before either of the two civil wars between the academy and the royal family. Liurnia has a lot of history. I don't think the Crucible is related to Rykard's shenanigans though, or Raya Lucaria.
I have reason to believe the Primordial Crucible predates the Erdtree _and_ the Greater Will, and its influence may still be manifesting in the birth of omens.

I have been able to get several friends and my brother to try this game and the review each time was an unequivocal "best game I've ever played".
But the biggest shock was how deeply interested they all got in the lore of the world. I dont have any people in my life who are major gamers or get into the lore and stories of RPGs, as I tend to do. I have been a fan of these games since DS1 but I never tried to get any of my friends or family into the series bc of how niche such challenging games tend to be, and how unclear or up for interpretation the stories are. But, while Elden Ring is challenging and the story isn't spin fed, the game is so astonishing great that it makes typically far more casual gamers feel motivated to overcome all of the hurdles and dig deeper into the story. It's truly an amazing accomplishment, not just in gaming, but as an artistic milestone. It has shown mainstream audiences the breathtaking and unique manner in which a narrative can be divulged to players through the medium of gaming. Of course, there have been elements of this as long as gaming as existed but nothing has truly shown its full potential as an artistic medium until now.

Fun fact about the locations of the knights: each of them watch over signs or places connected to a once existing road.
Deep Root - Follow the coffins from Nokrom and you end up there.
Nokrom - The Moon - Two that were sent to follow the way to the coffin that led to Deeproot and one that was trapped on an unreachable ledge after a bridge was broken that took his peers to Nokrom, which is why he’s looking in that direction.
Caelid/Radahn - Scarlet Rot’s Birthplace and he seems to be defending against entry, possibly connected with Nokrom and preventing entrance. If Radahn lives, there’s no way to reach the entrance to Nokrom and thereby Deeproot
Volcano Manor - May be a traitor, not sure.
One big exception: One trapped in Evergaol, probably by Godrick another sent in his place to see what becomes of Godrick, possibly even being sent to kill him as he’s seen heading up towards the lift when we met him.
Most likely they had been sent in groups to do these jobs. There seems to be a connection between them, Scarlet Rot or The Moon on some kind of expedition, but the funny thing is, the city of Nokrom it’s self isn’t protected. It’s the way to the deep root and the rot swamp.

Tree Sentinels were like knights dedicated to the tree and the capital/Elden Lord, while the Crucible Knights were closer to fantasy paladins, still loyal to the Capital and related figures, but more in a religious fashion.
Mainly thought of them closer to Paladins based on all their holy attacks and angelic/draconian features they can take on.

I realized this just now, the two named crucible knights are Siluria and Ordovis, who’s names are both really similar to Ordovician and Silurian, periods in the Paleozoic era, which lines up with the crucible knights theme of primordial ancient origin

I like them so much that I cosplay/roleplay as one in my playthrough. Although I delve more into the theory that they are primordial representations of dragon magic. This using a completely and utterly destructive arcane/faith build centered around named dragon breaths and crucible incants. At times I have had to shy away from spirit summons and breaths because they have trivialized the difficulty of some of the PvE by melting bosses in literal seconds but it's fun nonetheless.

Actually all 16 are accounted for if you count the ordovian and silurian summon at road's end catacomb, so from my count 2 are in limgrave, 1 in caelid, 1 in mount gelmir, 2 in auriza, 2 in leyndell, 3 in siofra, 1 in deep root, 2 in farum azula, and counting the 2 sumons in road's end, that's all 16 of them, 10 ordovian and 6 silurian, although 2 are presumed dead hence the spirit summons, imagine if you didn't hunt them down before killing maliketh, Godfrey would gather the remaining 14 and make getting to him at the throne room harder, just imagine 2 at the bottom of the staircase to the elevator, 2 posted just in front of the elevator, 2 posted outside Gideon's arena, Ordovis and Siluria replacing gideon and they would still drop his set implying they killed him as an intruder, 2 outside the queen's bed chamber, and 2 outside Godfrey's arena

The worst thing about them is even if you dodge all their attacks you can't follow up with damage without them also hitting you and just trading blows. Using parry or Club/Hammer to break his guard and stager him are the best ways. Hammer talisman helps a lot as well.

I've seen a few people say that the Dragon lord being a Elden lord is a mistranslation as the original Japanese just said it was a old/elder lord, which to me does make more sense as it existed before the Erdtree or the outer will were in the lands between

I feel like the two armour we get are the ones who died previously, thus we get all 16 together.
I feel like we might see future DLC with the upgraded version of them tho, just like the dragonoic tree knights from the normal golden tree knights.
