I believe the banished knights were sworn to the Lord of the Storm of long ago, the Stormhawk King, and that this lord was a vassal of the then Elden Lord Placidusax. This would explain their mastery of the wind no matter where they're found, and the dragon ornamentation on their armour. After the reign of the dragons ended and was usurped by Marikas Golden Order there was a war that started and ended before the shattering, thanks to Godwyn and his friendship with Fortissax. However, as we know the storm is associated with being a "true warrior" its likely the Stormlord didn't submit when the dragons did, thus requiring Godfrey to defeat him. With their lord defeated and having aided in his "rebellion" the knights were then masterless, and so were banished to the fringes.

I concur. This also makes sense because it ties most of the places you find banished knights in together. Stormveil castle, Caste Morne, and Farum Azula. I think its also possible the banished knights themselves established the two cathedrals of dragon communion, where they gathered to commune with their revered draconic overlords in pre-golden order times.
The knights in castle sol were probably, like commander niall, dragon cultists serving godwyn, then serving miquella after the latters death. Godwyns dragon cult would probably have been one of the few ways for them to be tolerated by the Golden Order of the lands between, and it was also a way to practice their faith without repercussion again.

L2 should be off-hand weapon art
R2 should be main hand weapon art
L1 should be standard power stancing moveset (both weapons strike simultaneously/same time), i.e. more powerful, slower.
R1 should be alternative (faster) moveset (weapons strikes follow one after the other, think Oleg power stancing greatswords), i.e. lower damage, higher DPS.

as you stated near the end, the banished knight armor in the roundtable likely has deeper meaning, as not only is the armor found there, but also their weapons, and rooms are decorated with more basic weapons too, so this definitely was an intentional choice to make the roundtable related to banished knights. Here’s my take on the ambiguous backstory of the Banished Knights.
Let’s say, these “Banished Knights” were originally the inhabitants of the Roundtable Hold (Evidenced by their armor existing in the original Roundtable Hold in Leyndell Hold and the red and gold pattern on the unaltered set of armor matches that of the carpet in the Roundtable Hold. It also matches that of Commander O’Neil’s Standard, which will be relevant later) Fiercely loyal to Godwyn (Evidenced by the large concentration of Banished Knights found in Castle Sol and the significance of the Eclipse).
After his death, they were thrown out of the Roundtable and Leyndell, where they wandered the Lands Between, searching for Warlords or Commanders to pledge their allegiance to (This is why they do not all share the same end goal or Skillset by the time The Tarnished encounter them in game. Some harness the power of Ice in the North, others wield Dragon Communion spells. See also Veteran’s Prosthesis item description: “Bladed prosthetic leg enwreathed with the power of lightning. Commander Niall, veteran of castle Sol, offered this prosthesis in exchange for the lives of defeated nights held prisoner. Space he went on to lead these men as an army of no nation.”
How else would this item be enwreathed with the power of lightning if not perhaps gifted to him by Godwyn?
Those still loyal to their “Souless Demigod” (Again, Godwyn. Evidenced by them having the heaviest presence in Castle Sol which has Eclipse engravings everywhere on the castle, which is said to be “the protective star of soulless demigods” according to the Eclipse Crest Greatshield item description) helped however they could. Commander Niall chose to help Miquella (Godwyn’s brother) by safeguarding half of the Haligtree Medallion, and O’Neil chose to help Malenia because Radahn’s sister (Ranni) took part in killing Godwyn.
At least, that’s the best I can surmise with all of the information given throughout the game.

One thing that I asked myself. Why are there no Godrick Knights or Godrick Soldiers in Stormveil Castle? There aren't any if I recall correctly.
The last ones are before Margit.
As for 'humanoid' enemies there are only banished knights and exiled warriors, commoners, a grafted scion, a crucible knight, a hornless omen.. then of course the lion tiger, dogs, a troll, pots, birds, ulcerated tree spirit but NO godrick knight or Godrick soldier, but they're all over Limgrave.
Stormveil Castle is Godrick's castle, isn't it, or at least, the one he squatted in and does the grafting?
Nepheli Loux greeted me with "You're clearly none of Godrick's lot" ironically I wore the whole Godrick Soldier set, which was the first I completely acquired. And indeed I was the only one flashing Godrick's colors in Stormveil castle

  • @ConnorJara

My interpretation is the Banished Knights were once loyal to the Storm Lord who Godfrey dethroned. The Storm Lords dethroning marked the Age of the Erdtree. The knights were banished due to their previous allegiances and were not allowed to exist with the victors who would go on to create the Golden Order. This banishment is why they all left to the fringes, each knight seeking new purpose. Most wandered on the fringes or engaged in Dragon communion, with exceptional cases finding Farum Azula to consume ancient dragon hearts. Some returned to their former home of Stormveil during the shattering, cursed to undeath and guarding the home they were once chased from. Few cases of Knights were honored with Erdtree Burial, proving they were exceptions and had no place in the Golden Older. Only during the Shattering were they accepted again in some faculty which may explain them being with Godrick or roaming other key Dragon temples. The 2 Veteran Banished Commanders are also given importance to the story. Niall the Commander of Sol, lead some banished knights and guarded castle Sol on the fringes, intent to stay there for the rest of their days. Miquella, who often befriends the spurned, allied himself with Niall in order to reserruct Godwyn and imbue him with a new Soul during the Eclipse. Commander O'Niel allied himself with Malenia and her armies, however, banished knights did not go with him. O'Neil only commanded Exiled soldiers of the penal Colonies whom share a similar yearning of purpose as the Banished Knights do.
Banished Knights Storm abilities is the main reason i think they were once Garrisoned at Stormveil or call it home. Also, a bunch of Banished Knight armor is found all over Stormveil. Their design is ancient and we really dont encounter knights more ancient than them in the game. Really love the way Fromsoftware organically inserted them into multiple locations, a case could be made for them to fit anywhere in the lore!

I actually did some digging on them in game some time ago and discovered a few interesting tidbits.
    1. The two commanders (o Neill and Niall) wear armor similar to the banished knights
    2. The corpses that litter the battlefield outside lyndell are predominantly those of banished knights.
    3. The statues on the sides of the collapsed Forrest spanning bridge in altus hold swords similar to the banished knights.
    4. The altered banished knights helm has the long pale hair coming out the back, reminiscent of the hair Malikith and Serosh have (and probably others who I don't remember at this time). This in combination with the silver lion on the banished knight shield suggest a connection to the beast men.
    5. The engraving on the banished knights armor is similar to the carvings on the walls in farum azula (though I admit it is a bit of a stretch).
Ultimately I have no conclusions to offer. Only a few small data points.

My tarnished was a vagabond knight who grew up admiring knights and the honor they stood for and aspired to be the greatest knight to live. After witnessing the sheer power and skill of the banished knights he trained and trained to become part of a brotherhood of mercenaries feared by all. After years of traveling and serving whatever Lord they chose to follow and becoming the most powerful and feared of all the banished knights he grew tired of serving lords and decided that he himself was worthy of not only lordship but the greatest lordship to behold "the elden lord." After a bad and resentful (as the banished knights resented his leaving) separation from the banished knights and being cast out from the lands between. He decided to grow his strength and faith in the power of the erd tree and the very dragons that he wore upon his helmet and wield the biggest, scariest, gnarliest sword of them all. Powerful in strength, faith, and the dragon communion his journey begins after the calling of grace. Shortly thereafter calling on the servitude of the two banished knights oleg, and engvall, to serve under a new more graceful and purposeful lord with a mission not only to be the most revered but also to make the lands between a better place as his left and right hands to become part of the greatest monarchy to ever be. I know it's a bit of a longshot, but I can't help but shake the feeling that there's some sort of connection between the Banished Knights and the Vagabonds. Here's why.
--Both the Banished Knights and the Vagabonds lean fairly heavily towards Quality builds (though in addition to this, some Banished Knights lean into Arcane and utilize an as-of-yet unknown Dragon Communion spell, which also suggests an adversarial relationship with dragons--which would certainly fit with them being among Godfrey's Tarnished, alongside the Exiled Soldiers of Stormveil, whose equipment we ALSO see in its unmarred state in the Roundtable Hold.. Not quite as mighty as his Crucible Knights, but mighty nonetheless, and while they don't mirror one another, you do tend to find them together in a couple spots).
--Additionally, they tend to favor the same weapons; medium shields, swords, and halberds. I would argue that this is actually worth noting because most knights we see in the Lands Between prefer spears to halberds, including the Crucible Knights. The only other exceptions we see where halberds are genuinely favored over lances and partisans seem to be the Night's Cavalry and Tree Sentinels.
--Then there's the similarities between their armor, but this is the single weakest point. I would suggest that, perhaps, the Vagabonds were those who were unable to keep their armor in as good condition and had to replace their equipment over many battles, or are generations removed. We know that the Tarnished were not always barred from Leyndell nor attacked on sight due to Vyke's seeming favor there, so it stands to reason that in the earlier days of their return, some managed to reintegrate to an extent with the fringes of society. It also explains why Godrick would take them in while grafting what, in this case, would hypothetically be their comrades; he's a foreign lord to those of Stormveil, defeated them, and then when their commander surrendered his leg for their survival, took advantage of their expertise and their genuine ties to an ancestor he venerates instead of freeing them, in the name of vainglory.

Another thing that I don’t remember if it was mentioned but the braid on the halberds can be different colors, possibly also indicating factions.

I'm of the belief that the banished knights may have been banished from Farum Azula after they lost to Marika. The highest concentration of the banished knights in the game is in Farum Azula, surrounding the position of the Godskin Duo. They are stalking the Godskin Duo who are in hiding, having come to Farum Azula in search of the Destined Death and Maliketh. They could certainly be defending the Godskin Duo but the Godskin Duo is not in Farum Azula to take rule over the area, they are there to get the destined death for their gloam eyed queen. The way the Banished knights walk the halls of the dragon alter they seem to be searching for the duo. I believe with all of the dragon imagery they are likely servants to the Dragon Lord Placidusax.

Maybe its far fetched, but all the locations we find banished knights have some sort of connection to Godwyn. The dragon communion shrines and Farum Azula(Godwyn was friends with the dragons), Stormveil castle (Godricks love for the golden lineage, and Godwyns corpsetumor in the basement), Castle Sol (maybe Godwyns castle), Fias Chamber. Maybe they were Godwyns knights and were banished after he got killed.

Maybe thinking they were Leyndell at one point, because of the banished name, but they lack any Golden/Ancient Dragon magic. Only using those sinister attacks by Dragon Communion.
The knights are some of the Highlight enemies of this game, not one faction feels boring (I can see a case for Godricks if we ignore story.)

The fact that they don't spawn in a dragon head when using communion spells is kinda fishy to me... almost as if they were already draconic in some way. With the DLC info, my new guess is that perhaps these knights were some of the first drake warriors that fought against Placidusax's enemies, the Drakes. Or perhaps they could have been part of Godwyn's army during the war against dragons but before the peace between them... hence why they lack lightning skills. Anyways there's just so many possibilities... one thing is certain, Dragons, Godwyn and Stormveil all are linked with these guys.

I think it's worth noting that Niall O'Neill was a historic ruler of the Kingdom of Tyrone in Ireland, which successfully resisted English conquest even as neighbouring kingdoms fell. Considering the game's preoccupation with the history of conquest in the British Isles, (the crucible knights being named for the Ordovice and Silurian Britons, the Carians being very Welsh-and-pagan coded, etc.), I reckon this is a very plausible inspiration for the Storm King. "Niall" rhymes with trial, by the way.

Like in your Nial Video mentioned I'm sure now that they together with the exiled knights were Godwyns Knights, all ties lead to dragons... After Godwyn fell, they fell into small groups seeking some purpose, some roam the lands as mercenaries, others stayed in Sol or joined Malenias war against Radahn, due to Miquella wanting to save Godwyns soul. Some directly serve the dragons of Farum Azula, protecting it, or attacking people around the dragon communion church on sight to prevent this. And others just joined Godricks cause like Edgar or the knights in Stormveil, simple because of his golden lineage.

I wonder if the Banished knights aren't linked to the Gloam-eyed queen. In Favum Azula, there are a lot of banished knights guarding the godskins apostle and gosdkin Noble's chambers.
It's likely that those two were trying to get back the destined death that was stolen from their queen and brought a host of banished knights.

  • @Beem0b0t
    @Beem0b0t 2 года назад +5

My woring theory thus far is that they're originally from Farum Azula and the reason they were banished and exiled to the fringes is because they fought against Marika in the service of Placidusax. It explains why they seem to have a relation to dragon communion and why their armor so heavily indicates dragon occultism. That being said time changes all things and though wounds heal they will always leave scars. So where some licked their wounds and eventually wound up in service to the golden order there were plenty still in service against it like in the dragon communion church and with Niall hiding the other half of the medallion leading to the consecrated snowfield.

Nowhere does it say in-game that Godfrey fought Placidusax, yet I find it all over the place. The Storm Lord, or Lord of the Storm was most likely the original Lord of Stormveil Castle, and there is an item description that does mention the battle between Godrey and this lord, and while there are correlations between the Storm Lord and Placidusax, storm/wind powers are not the same as dragon lightning (red lightning).
However, we know the Golden Order waged War against the Ancient Dragons, yet nowhere does it mention if a battle took place in Farum Azula itself or if the Gransax attacking Leyndell was the start of an invasion attempt by the Ancient Dragons.
Personally I believe Dragon Lord Placidusax died long before the Greater Will chose Marika as the vessel for the Elden Ring in the Lands Between, as it is stated that Placidusax waited for his god to return (who left for unexplained reasons and remains unnamed) but seems to have died before that happened, but it is also said that "it is believed that Placidusax was Elden Lord before the time of the Erdtree", and here's the important bit: Before the time of the Erdtree. Whatever was before that only existed before the Elden Beast arrived in the Lands Between.
The Lands Between (probably including Farum Azula) seems to have been around long before Marika came into the picture. The only hole in this idea of mine? The larger Elden Ring symbol in Maliketh's bossroom, with the roots underneath it.

I have a theory that because they’re “banished knights” they could if been part of Godfrey’s original army. Considering their dragon helmet than the altered version to protect against the wind of the unknown lands. Or possibly the ones without the dragon helmet could of disowned the Erdtree and the golden order because the dragons were related to the order at that time. Just a theory I thought up while listening. Either that or the ones that are hooded are protected against the winds of faruma and haven’t earned their dragon themed helmet. Considering they’re literally all over the map and than you run into Godfrey at the end of the game could have me thinking Godfrey could have them scouting or the knights could be looking for something they remember.
