I could not agree with what you’ve said anymore, your spot on, the industry seems to view what Microsoft is doing through a 2009 mentality, Microsoft are trying to give people choice, everyone seems to think that gamers only want to buy there games and play them natively but that isn’t the case, everyone has their own use case and needs and requirements, I’d use the fire stick etc if I went on holiday, I use xcloud on my phone to try games and then decide if I wanna download them on my series x, gamepass is growing, and is a great value and somehow people seem threatened by choice and value

No, MS should encircle and engulf them first. They made sure that game sales are not restricted by console sales by going day and date on PC (just like any third party that wants to survive). That doesn't change the need to grow the console base. The lack of or slowing of growth is what is pushing them to "burst at the seams" in the first place. This is a delicate balance, and MS needs to take care not to erode console sales in the hopes of ubiquitous game sales.

    • @edwardlafferty8796
      @edwardlafferty8796 Месяц назад +7

      Yeah.
MicroSoft isn't competing against Sony. Sony fans don't like to hear that but the truth is Sony, for now, needs to sell consoles. Its part of their business model.
But as Sony shows, large numbers of consoles sold doesn't necessarily generate profit. The attach rate for PS5 is low. For several reasons, but a big one is because the PS5 is the casual box. Millions of PS5 owners...as per Sonys own reports....own a PS5 but invest in only one franchise. They buy COD. Or MineCraft. Or NBA. Or FIFA.
And they buy little or nothing else. A few million such casuals for each of these franchises soon add up to a very hefty chunk of the PS5 install base.
As far as actually earning money and profit is concerned, that chunk might as well not exist as far as console sales go. PS might, in some situations, actually earn less because of their existence.
And thats why MS isn't competing with Sony. Sony is fighting a war MS and XBox has no interest in.
MS and XBox doesn't need the console. Its important, for now, but it isn't needed.
Music went from Tape and record to CD and then the cloud.
TV and film went from air to cable to streaming across the cloud
Gaming went from tape to disk to CD to digital downloads and now streaming vua the Cloud is on the verge of viability.
      MS isn't fighting Sony.
MS is fighting Apple. Meta. Amazon. Netflix. And others.
Its only a matter of time before another one of those giants decides gaming is big enough and profitable enough to invest in. If Apple buys PlayStation then Apple is an overnight monster in console gaming. If Meta buys EA then the same.
MS is rushing to buy and develop gaming content before that happens. But what that future vision doesn't need is consoles. And that is why both Sony and MS are moving to get rid of them and move to an app based future. MS is just a decade ahead on that road.
And that in turn explains why Sony fans hate GamePass.

It's an entry point to the service and will funnel users into their ecosystems. And realistically the good thing about a cloud service is the upgrades for the hardware aren't in the hands of the consumer. Gamepass is looking at 10 years down the line as the overall Internet becomes quicker and more stable. Also partnering with other companies who can provide parts of the service better/cheaper than they can and again it's invisible to the user. It's actually an incredibly smart play that has been successfully used in enterprise sales for years. Now we are reaching the point where consumer Internet isgood enough to support those services whilst not impacting users who want local play and are willing to pay for it.

However, if what they are trying proves to be successful, Sony especially will follow suit. This goes all the way back to the Original Nintendo days, when Nintendo had their games locked down via proprietary chips to prevent third party publishers from randomly selling games for Nintendo Consoles. Some players only play 1-3 games per year. It is not valuable for these players to spend on gamepass if you won't be playing more games.
Some other players want to "own" their games and not depend from gamepass to play.
Gamepass is great if you play or try new games everytime, but it is not for the FIFA players, Fortnite players or Call of Duty players that will only play that game during the year waiting for the new one.
