Little tip about bridging solder joints, DONT use flux. The entire purpose of flux is to keep solder sticking to its pad, and its pad alone. so in this case, using flux only makes your life harder.

Back in the day I would use a fibreglass pencil to clean the TSOP points and then use a pencil to draw between the 2 points so flash would be enabled, no solder required. Then it was time to install a linux loader via a mechassault gamesave and then flash via terminal on my PC over network! Was involved in the scene for almost 5 years and during that time must of modified 2 dozen xboxs. In future should you do it again a 1.6 xbox can be used, it just needs a 1.6 compatible chip with adapter. I learnt a lot watching this, so thank you! Also releasing the 3D files/guide is a top tier move. Thank you for all the wonderful content!.

In regards to the mini Xbox project, there is an ATX standard called FlexATX that has smol power supplies, might be something to look into. Often used for old PowerPC Mac towers.
The xbox one and ps4 use cut down, low power cosumption bulldozer cores that were designed for notbookes and embedded computers. Now imagine if they used full-fledged bulldozer cores like the fx-8350. The performance increases (and increased power consumption) would have been insane!
Idk I’d rather actually use the case than have it complete and unusable because of being stupidly outdated but throwing the rest of it away is a bit far. At the end of the day, they own it and can do whatever they want with it

It was originally called the DirectX Box, but after the people at microsoft were saying 'directx box' over and over every day, people naturally just shortened it to 'the xbox' when talking about it. DirectX is a 3d rendering api made for windows, so it's no surprise most of the consoles are x86. That is completely expected in fact. Only the PowerPC xbox 360 is the outlier.
I mean... the original Xbox is practically a PC as off-the-shelf as a console could possibly be. A standard Intel Pentium 3 mobile CPU and Nvidia GPU, standard HDD, heck it's even running a build of Windows 2000! (albeit with custom kernel modifications to replace the Windowed desktop and add some additional APIs) Iirc the controller ports are also just funny shaped USB ports, which is how the remote adapter enabled additional playback functionality.

I was a beta tester for the Xbox and I can confirm that these were used. However, they kept them under a sheet when we used them and they rarely had side panels installed.

Retro hardware collector/enthusiast here! I somehow had no idea these existed, but I realised from watching the video that I have most of the components to build one of these (other than the chassis and proprietary things like the sound card) sitting in my storage cupboard. I also use original Xbox 8GB hard drives in retro builds, because they are cheaper and younger than other sub 10GB IDE drives so the capacity is period correct, and they have less chance of immediate death. I actually have a whole box of them for that purpose. Nice video, very interesting, it has given me several ideas!
