NISSAN CUBE Rear Door Latch BREAKS In The WORST Possible Way
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 14 окт 2024
- This 2009 Nissan Cube popped up for sale with a bad transmission, but it was cheap. I jumped right on that and had it delivered to the warehouse sight unseen. Now that it's here I've fixed the driver window, detailed it, ceramic coated it, and now it's time to fix the last few things before the transmission. The rear door latch is a common failure on the Cube and it only fails closed, so you have to rip the door apart while sitting in the back with almost no room to work. After you destroy the latch you can open the door and then the job becomes much easier. Plus I replace the rearview mirror, which is another common Nissan Cube problem.

I had a Cube with a 6 spd manual. It’s my second favorite car after my Miata. I was working at the largest wholesale auto auction, driving everything from clapped out Civics to supercharged Mercedes. The first time I sat in a Cube, I was astonished. The interior was huge, the seat was the best, and I was charmed by the little rug on the dash.. Manual good, CVT bad.
I've got a 2009 cube 6 spd, bought new, and never had any expenses for the first 158k miles. Then lost the clutch slave cyl that oiled and burnt the flywheel, disc, and pressure plate. $2,000 repair but well worth it. Now fixing the rear door latch, ($90.00 on amazon), and very thankful for this video. Very quick with that 6 spd and still averages 28/32 mpg around town. Great little 4 banger, run it on synthetic oil since new, and doesn't burn a drop of oil between the 5k oil changes.
Watching you work on that door have me flashbacks of working at the Nissan plant.
"turn that Cube into... a cube of dollar bills." Once again, proof that JR is completely unscripted and unrehearsed!
Jr is the only one I know that don’t push his merch as much as others…and I have to appreciate that!
He does it at the end of each video
True but i watch others who will do it multiple times in the videos and it’s like the video be having commercials lol on top of the ads if you don’t pay for premium
I just traded in my 2010 Cube. I went thru multiple transmissions on it, but luckily it was all under warranty. Never had an issue with the back door thankfully. Got over 100K out of the Cube, so I cannot complain too much about it. I liked the car.
Nice!! Did you get another Nissan?
The back door of my cube has been broken for 5 years if I would have known that’s all it takes I would have done that so long ago, thank you for your videos
your videos have made it possible for me to attempt working on cars at home. As a first time mechanic I got done a ton of things for my daily. I did Timing belt/waterpump ( My friend who a mechanic gave the ok on timing ) all fluids and filters changed. Brakes and rotors done and belts replaced
My first car's water pump seized the day after I brought it home -- Thought it was just a bad belt, so replaced that and broke that one too. The dealer felt bad (it was bought as-is) so he got me the part at cost. Also, this was the weekend, so I had to pick it up at his house on Sunday morning. Promptly broke one of the bolts getting the old pump off, and naturally the hardware store didn't have the right length so I had to cut one down. Ah, the joys of owning your first car, even if it is a rusty piece of junk...
A lot of elderly folks love a Honda Element! I see so many paps driving them.
You're not joking, I've ran a senior center in my small hometown for a non profit for well over 16 years now, and 2 of my clients that still drive have one as their daily. the older gen love Hondas, and Toyotas as well because they are overall reliable, and they don't have to think about them much beyond the basic maintenance that just about any competent kid even at a walmart service center could do.
@@CommodoreFan64 I got an element
I had an Element and loved it, but I needed a real truck so I traded it.
I just got mine but its exhaust is getting in the coolant system
Just made this repair today on a 2012 Cube. This made it easy. GREAT VID. Don't know why people break the plastic in these repair vids, though. I just reached under the back of the latch, and there is a manual level that'll open the door. Then you can just unscrew the actuator, as opposed to breaking it. 15 minute job.
Don’t forget about the Kia Soul. Those things are everywhere and the hip height is a big reason. Very easy to get in and out of. Plus, they still make them. 😁😁😁
JR finishes working on The Cube - goes home and plays Q-Bert. 😳😖😵💫
From the modified Ariel atom to the Nissan Cube, might be the biggest car content transition in RUclips history 😂
Thank you...thank you. I have a 2011 nissan cube backdoor hasn't open in years..after watching your video I ordered part from Amazon. It installed as your video said...YA...YA..It opens.
Great video, however in my case I did find an easy fix that may or may not work on other latch problems, but definitely worth a try before having to destroy parts and buying new ones. Follow all the steps to get the interior plastic door panel off and remove the plastic seal paper. Remove the torx bolt that's straight ahead on the latch which holds the end cap of the exterior handle and then remove the handle cap on the outside of the door. Now try pulling back hard the wide silver lever at the bottom of the latch assembly (it's located just below the torx bolt that you just removed) and the door should pop open. What seems to have happened is the door handle has a plastic arm that hooks around the verticle metal lever of the latch assembly to open the door, but over time the plastic handle arm wears down and cannot pull the verticle metal lever far enough back to trip open the locking latch via the cable. If your door had opened using this method, there are two easy mods that need to be made in order to correct the problem. Unfortunately without pics here it's difficult to explain. The entire section on the handle cap to the left of the torx hole is a plastic guide area where the curved part of the handle rides and needs to be cut away. On the handle itself, there are two small stopper tabs (at the end of the curve) molded in that need to carefully be filed back about 1/4". Both of these mods will allow the handle to be pulled out further than before, thus pulling the metal verticle arm out more to compensate for the gap of the worn plastic. Cleaning the actual door locking latch with WD-40 is also a good idea to keep it lubed.
I watched the other video and I saw your comment there also. This is a very good idea and yes I will do it as soon as I get the car back from my granddaughter!!
Excited for cube content! Glad to see the rear door is working again
Jake is a decent cameraman. Nice One!
I bought my Cube six years ago and reluctantly agreed to an extended warranty at the dealership. I wish I’d still had it in effect when the transmission went out two years ago, but it did come in handy for making the $500+ rear door repair (this same issue) only $200.
110% Jake is the best camera minion at JR's Speed Factory.
Working on cars is enough of a pain in the ass but you doing it for the camera at this quality is flat out amazing
The old Chevy in the background looks sweet!!
I laughed when you said old people, then realized I might be one. :(
If you’re not 70, you’re not old.
yea! i’m 65 and i’m not old….yet.🥳
I'll be 55. Dont feel old but my body aches from doing body work all day. After 30 years I'm tired of it
I'm 76. I can still do everything I could do when I was 40, I just can't do as much of it! They say 70 is the new 40. But keep in mind 9pm is the new midnight! 😀
@@douglasburnside I'm 51 and in the best shape of my life. I'm in bed by 7:30, but that's because I get up at 3:15 to lift weights.

So happy to see a video about the cube! It's been a while, can't wait for the transmission vid....Please include your opinion on jatco cvt, thanks!
Lights on that shop are super bright, not to mention the floors nicely done!!
I love the shop floor and lighting!
You should do a video on the beautiful 67 in the background
Hey man, Thank you so much for this video. I was able to swap my actuator out in 2014 Nissan Cube in about 30 mins without breaking anything lol.
Video & instructions was Spot on 👌 Thank you for that just swapped my dad rear door latch the price did change Its listed at $257 now 1-17-22 .
That GTR in the back tho 🔥 🔥🤤🤤
Thanks. Replaced mine before it could break. It took me 30 minutes total.
The last time I was this early, JR still worked behind a desk.
This is a great day. Just left work, got sonic, and some JRGO
You got yourself a nice T7 right there. Love those floor scrubbers
Are there previous videos of the C10? I’ve never seen that before.
Your shop looks incredible.
Good fix! You make repairs look easy. Great mechanic!
Is still can't get over that shop floor. Looks great.
Classic WatchJRGo stuff. Thanks
I helped push that tpday, it was good to meet you and Jake today
I have owned one Nissan in my life, an '82 Maxima that I bought in Orlando and took to Indianapolis as an airport or work car. That thing sat for two months without starting, and I walked up to it covered with 10 inches of snow, brushed it off, and it started on the first turn of the key. I've never seen a car as reliable as that '82 Maxima.
And it talked to me on occasion. Every once in a while when the door was open I heard this "Door is open" in a British accent. Only later did I find that this was done by an actual phonograph inside the dash! Old Nissans were SOLID.
Modern Nissans are NOT the same from what I have read!
Wow that hatch design is a nightmare. Great job getting that fixed
JR is such fun, I always wanted a cube, but got a Kia soul
You probably dodged a bullet there!!!
@@mbach2826 yes was a manual 6 speed very reliable
One of our shop vehicles is a Scion Xb and I have to admit it does have a really good ride height, easy to get in and out of too.
Scion XB are a great little SUV but the cube is a POS...
@4:45 So true, but actually the Nissan product line is just full of those kinds of problems. Makes the damn cars so frustrating to work on if you don't work on them every day. Their fasteners have a tendency to ALWAYS break.
You can use coffee grounds and salt with coconut oil to get industrial adhesives off your skin, without damaging your hands. :)
1/4 cup of coconut oil
1/8 cup of salt
1/8 cup of coffee grounds
Mix into paste then scrub hands until the adhesive is removed. Wash with warm water. Then apply lotion to lock in moisture.
Classic nissan. This happens often with the door latches on the 90s 300zx. No way to access it without destroying your door panel. Big sad
On newer Nissans my 08 rouge but I was able to fix the front doors
Love the American accent. What’s a new “mear? “ is that what we call a mirror in England 😅😅😅 Nice update, funky little car.
All English speakers do it to some level; getting rid of syllables on some words when the point will get across without it 😁
Kansas accent is not far from Okie accent. I find I am guilty, though I didn't know how thick my Okie drawl is until I had to make "Air Checks" for a broadcasting school I attended. I learned not to say, Sundy, Mundy, Tuesdy, etc. It's Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, etc., and I learned how many times I said 'uhm'. Pronunciation is key for radio. But you aren't going to hear me say Mir-ror either.
I always thought the Cube was hideous, but after seeing some of the interior, it looks like a cool little econobox.
It is average 30-36 mpg so great 😃
Thanks for the video it helped. My cube has the button on the handle to lock/unlock the doors they had wire connectors on the backside of the handle that were held on with push clips no big deal got a socket on the back side to release them. Other than that job and part were the same.
If I could help Watch JR Goes work on the Nissan Cube I would drink the cold Bartle Skeets and roll up the fat Woolford and get all schmoked up.
Hey JR love the videos! Any plans to do another project like the tracker? More of a long term buy and upgrade project? Speakers lights, lift kit and what not.
What's the story with the Blue Miata in the back? Looks nice.
I was thinking the same thing. When I bought his old miata, he did mention about a turbo miata someday. It makes me wonder.
Miracle Wipes work great for getting grease, grime, paint etc. off your hands. You can snag some at Sherwin-Williams!!
My back door lock broke on my 2012 Cube. The only way it would open was if I stood by the back door handle and held my thumb down on the key fob and pulled on the handle at the same time. May take a couple of tries. Nissan replaced it. The mechanic was happy when I show him the trick cause he didn't have to take all the crap off from the in side to get to the lock.( Your welcome)
Recently learned about Hinge Point (H-Point) in Ergonomics...Practically defines car/SUV/Truck people.
At least the use car market will be in your favor and your make a good $$ on the cube or anything else you sell right now. Thanks JR.
"My Trim is Completely Gone" Ummm, she's been gone for a long time now. 🤣😂😲
the internal plastics in nissan door handles/lock assemblies are infamous for breaking after x years. they really need to make certain parts metal again.
as for the rubber gunk, 92% ipa or brake cleaner, rub it into the affected spots before it evaporates. there's other things that'll do it, but those two are the most effective i've found.
I was told the same thing buy a sales guy at Kia. Older people LOVE the Soul because it's the right height to just swing in and sit.
"I got it on me again!" - that's why i wear gloves. :P
I bet the reason for the rear door actuator failure is all of the accumulation of dirt and crap around the inside of that door handle. The actuator itself looked absolutely filthy also.
Cars and SUVs with flat rear ends like that tend to collect a bunch of road debris on the rear surface. Makes a little bit of rain it gets into the cracks and crevices and door handles acts like a abrasive and wear stuff out.
Dirt roads destroy cars for sure 💯
I knew someone in Georgia with a vanity plate on their Cube that was 'Square'. You need this plate if it's hanging around for a bit.
:D
Butyl rubber cleanup, scrub your hands with wd40 to dissolve it before hitting them with gojo. Stuffs the worst, especially after it's been heat cycled for 20 years

Was the Cube's latch assembly engineered by Audi?
I was thinking Dodge who can't even make a proper truck tailgate latch designed this for them lol!
@@CommodoreFan64 How about a Benz SLK hood release, effing impossible to fix if it breaks.
It is made by Renault stamped right in the plastic
It's a race between the cube and the Atom. Thinking this would make some high-school kid a GREAT first car.
That floor looks awesome
I had this problem happen right after I bought my cube. I totally gave up on fixing it
What a PITA , but Great job !! Just suggesting, maybe getting a tool cart so u can put your tools on it with the screws and other hardware. Keep grinding !

Hi... like the informative videos... why don't you use mobile work tables rather than always having tools and parts all over the new floor... just an observation.
The struts on ‘17 Soul hatch have already given out! I thing I’d I’d rather have a swing out door like this!
JR is a sweet sweet boy, saving the Cube for that next grandma buyer ; I want to see that Cube cut up and turned into a mid engine box on wheels or make it Dual Engine , one in the front one in the back !!!! turn it into the shop fish tank
I want to Watch JR Go for a Motorcycle ride somewhere fun and beautiful. Helmet Cam Baby!!!!
A handed door? Must be a blast in the rain and wind! Typical Nissan, too clever for school.
Is that common issue with Nissans cars last year I fix my girl friend same issue but passenger door won’t lock. Easy fix
I had 8 year extended warranty purchased when I purchased my NEW NISSAN CUBE 2011 model on Dec 2011! Well, one time the back door lock failed and it was repaired under warranty. I love my Nissan Cube for all the reasons JR has mentioned! 😀 Being a female driver I purchased another 4 year extn. warranty. Hummmm, it got over in Dec 2023! And as proving the Murphy's law correct, the back door lock jammed yesterday March 21 2024!!! I took it to the dealer repair shop to have it checked, I am told the actuator needs to be replaced and the repair cost $ 600/- whoaaa! Someone on other Nissan forum mentioned he had the same problem as mine (posted on 2012) that is 12 years back, had costed him $ 350/- . Should I go to other car repair shop to see what he would charge? OR getting it fixed by Nissan Dealer repair services, the same dealer from whom I purchased the car? Since my car is now out of warranty, I feel skeptical if he would actually replace the door lock with a new part? How would I know that he has not fixed the existing mechanism and charging me for the new part and labor? I would appreciate JR or any experienced person respond to my query.
My Nissan Xterra had a plastic piece in the locking mech and it was broken and we burned the plastic together and it fixed it 😂👍
Do you have a website for the car's ur selling
I've been dealing with this issue for the last year. I'm an artist and I use large canvases. I need my back door to get them in the car.
$6-8k is the going price for ANY running car these days. Market is crazy. The Chrysler PT Cruiser had a similar problem with the electronic switch on the trunk. $10 part that they charged you $300 for plus labor.
I'm 61 years old and there is no way in hell I'd be driving that box on wheels around. Thanks, JR. I feel young again. Hopefully, I have another 20 years before I consider a cube my method of transportation.
Hey JR, where is the best place to get parts? I am in Canada and need to order parts for my car, do you recommend ordering online or going somewhere in store, and for each option which website or place do you recommend. I know Canada will be different but I’d to hear your thoughts. Thanks!
