  • July 2018 Update: Still working fine 2 1/2 years later.
March 2016: I was pretty tired when I made this, I stuttered and then repeated myself....This is NOT a professional step by step video!
But better than nothing, I could find no videos or photos showing how to fix this. Only forum discussions of people eventually paying a dealer $400 to 'use a chisel to destroy the latch'.
So after a year of occasional online searches and finding nothing. I decided to try it myself. It wasn't hard at all to put it back together, now it works great.I shot this quick video to help someone else out there out.

Great video, however in my case I did find an easy fix that may or may not work on other latch problems, but definitely worth a try before having to destroy parts and buying new ones. Follow all the steps to get the interior plastic door panel off and remove the plastic seal paper. Remove the torx bolt that's straight ahead on the latch which holds the end cap of the exterior handle and then remove the handle cap on the outside of the door. Now try pulling back hard the wide silver lever at the bottom of the latch assembly (it's located just below the torx bolt that you just removed) and the door should pop open. What seems to have happened is the door handle has a plastic arm that hooks around the verticle metal lever of the latch assembly to open the door, but over time the plastic handle arm wears down and cannot pull the verticle metal lever far enough back to trip open the locking latch via the cable. If your door had opened using this method, there are two easy mods that need to be made in order to correct the problem. Unfortunately without pics here it's difficult to explain. The entire section on the handle cap to the left of the torx hole is a plastic guide area where the curved part of the handle rides and needs to be cut away. On the handle itself, there are two small stopper tabs (at the end of the curve) molded in that need to carefully be filed back about 1/4". Both of these mods will allow the handle to be pulled out further than before, thus pulling the metal verticle arm out more to compensate for the gap of the worn plastic. Cleaning the actual door locking latch with WD-40 is also a good idea to keep it lubed.

That makes a lot of sense I'm going to try your method first. Why they use plastic for that mechanism on the handle is typical engineers wisdom.

Fixed my back door today in about an hour thanks to this video. Paid the same price you did for part. Local Nissan dealer wanted $350 for labor. Did it myself and saved $350. Your recap was excellent.

This was very helpful. Couple comments.
    1. There are flat washer like trim rings around the outside handle that lock ut in. Remove then they will slide.
    2. Use a drill to help remove plastic on the latch. Makes it a little easier.
    3. When your jacking with the latch to try to release it and open the door. The silver bar/lever when moved, seems like the door should open. Look for a white plastic arm that moves with the silver lever. Once I messed with that, the door moved and popped open.

I was about to go through all this, when I found another video that showed it's so much easier than this. The problem is a lot of dirt and gunk gets into the latch and that latch actuator contraption that makes it stick. You just have to spray A LOT of WD 40 in the small hole on the covering of the latch actuator that you broke into and keep trying to lock/unlock/open until it does. When it finally opens, then clean off the latch with WD-40 too.

For the Sh1ta (Shita), it doesn't just fall out (our shouldn't). Mine felt stuck like glue, so I had to go watch another video to find out that you have to actually shift the Sh1ta to the right (or left if you're facing the car from the outside) to free it from it's latches. Thanks again for this video. I've been delaying this for like 2-3 years and finally did it 😅

Hi, Just fixed my problem by watching your video. I installed the new part and couldn't figure out how to get the handle out....went to the video a couple of times and you were so detailed that you helped me out tremendously! As a woman, I was told it would be $1400.00 to fix from the Nissan dealer. Then I went to a local mechanic and he stated it would be $900.00 if I order the part. I did and after getting it, I got a better understanding of how the part works. I installed it all myself and only paid $130.00 for the part! THANK YOU, THANK YOU.......much appreciation to you.

Thank your for the tutorial. Mine rear door broke about three weeks ago. I called to local Nissan dealership and they told me it would cost between $450 and $850 dollars. When I asked why such a large price range, they told me they may break other items in the repair and I would have to pay for them. Not gonna happen. I watched you video, ordered the part on Ebay and was done in about an hour. Saved a ton of money. Thank you for your willingness to help out another Cube driver.

Nissan Cube OEM Cargo Hatch Tailgate Door Lock Latch Actuator 2009-2014 Lifetime
      Money Back Guarantee
      Item price: $129.99
      Item ID: 253612217679
      Seller: actuatorplus (5442)
When you ship back your old one they extend you a replacement warranty. The only problem I had was not having a long enough screwdriver to break the plastic. Once I had the right length (1 foot long), the plastic housing all broke off then the rear latch literally popped open. You will have to stick the screwdriver inside the metal closest to your back panel and give it a good twist. Total time was about 45 minutes once I got all my tools together. Enjoy!

Thanks Dan . I followed your video guide and fix my rear door 2010 cube. Saved 300$ in labor from Nissan dealer! If anyone is worried to attempt this repair: it not hard and or complicated since Dan did all leg work already.Only thing I would add is to take a picture of backside of door handle before removing it. It will help when putting back the handle to see how it fits in there.

Fixed my latch. Took 3 videos and took something from each one. Basically, bust some of the plastic with a screwdriver to expose the white latch,
Use a screwdriver to spring the latch, and spray the latch with WD40 once the door is open. Work the latch mechanism and handle until it is un-gummed. The old lubricant and debris seems to be the problem, not a broken part.

Thank you so much for making this video! I too have a faulty hatch door and it hasn't opened for well over a year!! Last year i crawled back into the hatch and fought and fought with it for hours, but never did get it open!! Now i can try again because of your video!!
Here's another heads up about the Cube... if you ever have to change the spark plugs, it's an absolute nightmare!!! They are located under the engine manifold which literally has been torqued on so hard that my impact wrench couldn't even loosen the bolts! You also have to remove the carburetor to get to a hidden bolt!
    Thanks Again!!!

I have the same car, It is awesome no problems at all 140 000 miles runs like new. I flush all the fluids, change all filters, changed all spark plugs and spark plug wires. Ceramic brake pads. Go to a great mechanic and have them do a 3 step fuel fuel injection cleaning service. Make sure they use BG products. It gets rid of all carbon build up The car roars now. Also use royal purple engine oil it is better then mobil 1 one oil. It drives like a race car now!!!! Also use Trico Titan wipers they work the best. ALso buy the royal purple oil filter and change serpentine belt every 80 000 miles to be safe.

I just now finished replacing this very lock on my 2012 Cube, thanks to this video. I have to admit, before I actually got the part in my hand and began the repair, I'd watched this a couple times and was a little annoyed that there wasn't an actual video of the repair being done, but it turns out your explanation was beyond helpful and made this a relatively easy job. I had to go buy torx bits to remove the lock mechanisms, but this video probably saved me about $300.If not for the trip to the store to get the torx bits, it would've taken about an hour & a half to 2 hours to complete. This is definitely a job that any DIY-er could handle, even if you don't really have mechanical inclinations. Also, I'm a musician, and if I would've had this thing loaded up with my gear when the lock failed last week, I would've been fucked. Haha. Anyhow, thanks for posting this. Great job! :)

Thanks for the video. I tried something that opened the door without drilling or digging the plastic off the lock. I stuck some needle nose pliers straight down in the space the cable comes out of. While doing this I pushed the unlock button on the key fob. It only took a couple of tries and it unlocked! You might have to wiggle the pliers around a bit. With the door opened I tried to lock it again. It would lock but not unlock. Like someone else mentioned I disconnected the wire so It wouldn’t lock again until I get the new part. Thanks again!

You don't need to break any thing, the only you need , when you take off the gate panel you will see small plastic black cylinder in the latch , push that thing down by hand or screw driver and push unlock on remote twice at the same time then let someone open the door.

    1. Before chiseling away the case of the lock assembly, try rotating the Emergency Lever counterclockwise toward you. This is a round, rotating, plastic part sticking sideways out the top of the lock assembly. This did not work for me, but it's worth a try.
    2. If you pause the video and expand it to fullscreen on your computer, you can study the lock mechanism in Dan's great video. You might find a spot where you can carefully, gently drill a hole that will let you use a stiff wire probe to move that white plastic lever. That would be a lot faster, and once you position the assembly outside the door, it should be a lot easier to remove more of the case with a Dremel cutting tool.
    3. I don't see any reason why removing or drilling through the plastic case would affect its function, so long as you keep shavings or splinters from getting into the mechanism. I can't afford the replacement part right now, so I'm going to try applying some lubricant inside the mechanism.* That likely won't make a difference, but it's better than doing nothing. Also, on another discussion board, somebody said they were able to repair a damaged gear with epoxy, so once you're able to inspect it, you might find options.
3.1 *Make sure the lubricant is safe for use on plastic parts. On a discussion board, some people recommended Liquid Wrench. First, I think that will eat away at plastics, and second, it make ruin a the ability of a better grease to adhere to the parts.
    4. I think the cable is long enough to let you move the lock assembly outside the door. If you can't replace the lock assembly, there's no need to disconnect the cable from the handle assembly, so save yourself some work.

I just fought with mine for a bit. I just bought my 2013 used and a couple of days after I got it the rear cargo door would not unlock. I noticed the door unlock solenoid was not making noise when I locked and unlocked. The emergency manual little cylinder didn't work either. I finally got the solenoid to actuate by banging on the latch assembly inside the door with the panel off. It was probably the lock solenoid had stopped working the last time it locked. I was able to get the assembly back out without having to chisel or break anything while doing it. I will put the part back in temporarily and leave the solenoid unplugged so it will stay unlocked until I can get the new part shipped and installed.

My last comment I stated what the service manual stated as a cure for a locked door. I had to repair my son's Cube so I ordered a new latch. I tried the lever and it did not work. I looked at the new latch to see how the lever worked. It just locks and unlocks the latch. The lever on the old latch would just go up or down and was not working correctly. I looked at the new latch and noticed that the lever would lock and unlock the latch. There are two "U" shaped holes on the side that you can see. One of the holes is blocked by a piece of metal. The other hole is opened and you can see the inside of the latch. There is a lever that you can see. This lever controls the locking and unlocking of the latch. When the lever is up the latch is locked. When the lever is down the latch is open. My latch was stuck in the locked position. All is had to do was to push the latch down to unlock the latch. I just stuck a small screw driver into the "U" shaped hole and pushed the latch down. I could then open the door with the handle. It was easy to replace the latch once I had the door opened. I'm not sure if that was the problem this guy was having, but it was the problem that my son's cube was having. It was stuck in the locked position and would remain locked.

Screwdriver in the u-hole worked for me also, though I believe it was levering the screwdriver down that raised the latch inside. I had to bend the screwdriver to work it in properly, the door frame gets in the way. Also, I fiddled with it for a hour waiting for the door to pop open, then thought of trying the door handle and it opened. So, check periodically whilst fidgeting!

    • @DanX157
      @DanX157  6 лет назад

'Sticking it in the hole and fidgeting' seemed to work in both of your situations. By the time I shot this video I had tried a few times in the previous months fidgeting in every possible Direction with screwdrivers and like tools, it is entirely likely that we broke something in the previous months of fidgeting and our only option was destruction of the latch, which didn't really take that long to do. Figuring out the rest after that was more time-consuming. Good news is, the door is still locking and unlocking perfectly ever since.

No transmission problems yet, but I only have 70k on my '09. I do remember reading that Nissan had extended the warranty to 120 on the early models. I guess I just need to expect it to happen eventually, but until then I try to be nice to it. Dan

per the Nissan website: "To provide customers with additional assurance regarding their overall cost of ownership we have doubled the warranty period for the transmission in all Model Year 2003 to 2010 Nissan models with a CVT. The existing powertrain warranty coverage of 5 years/60,000 miles will be extended at no cost, for CVT repairs, replacements or related towing, to 10 years/120,000 miles, whichever comes first. "

The hard plastic latch was filthy with grease and grime that had caked on the latch, preventing it from operating correctly.

Michael Rumbolo did you have to get in the back and pop the panel off to open the door from the inside? What was your process after getting the rear hatch open?

      @UncannyVallium 6 лет назад

Ashley Taylor I tried getting in the back, removed the back panel, and took off the seal. I fiddled with the latch but it wouldn't open. So after getting frustrated I left for about two weeks. And I so happen to hit a bump in the road and it had bump the latch open.
I used white lithium grease to clean and lubricate. Haven't had a problem since.

Right. My car has a death penalty. 120k is the end of the warranty. I loved my cube. Watch the A/C switch as well. That broke last summer. $400 repair. It's a lemon. I can't sugar coated. #Sourlemonade lol.

Mandy Cicciarelli go to 9min and 30 sec on video, I show the part number. you can get it from your local Nissan dealer, if you do an internet search and find an internet price my dealer match the online price.

Thank you for the video. I started having (or rather noticing) this problem today, just about a couple of hours ago. That's a big mess. After hunting around on the internet for a way to fix it, or determine the possible problem, I found from a forum a possible scenario from a response to the poster concerning a switch near the license plate(?). I was wondering if you knew anything about that.

Reading through that column, it looks like the issue he is suggesting is a short/electrical wiring problem. They are basically manually applying current to the wire to get the latch to open. I can assure you that was definitely not my problem or the common issue with the Cube. I could for sure hear a loud thunk of the latch trying to unlock every time I hit the lock or unlock button. it was receiving the electrical signal, but had mechanically failed internally. Definitely proven when I replaced the part and now it works perfectly (original wiring in place). Good luck

I bought the part from my closest Nissan dealer (Peoria Nissan). they matched Internet price. I would say it took me 4 hours, but I had to figure it out as I went. If I had to do it again, I could prob do it in less than 2.
also a big part for me is the satisfaction of doing it myself and not paying a dealer you have to go $90 an hour for labor
