    We did this last year but we used plastic pallets as our base vs wood. That way it will never rot away or break down. 60x12 completely changed our out door living space and makes a great conversation piece for friends and family.

    Fantastic tutorial !!!
    And I have to agree , warped boards can definitely throw a wrench into things ... Sometimes you can water pop the lumber to assist in unwarping it ... Simply saturate til soaked , then place 1-2 cinder blocks on the warped end with the level end secured . (SpongeBob voice) " Several Hours Later" the warp should of diminished to a less noticable state ...
    Either way y'all did a jaw dropping job on this patio !!! Can't wait to see more crafty creations from y'all !!!

  • @ArcaneEdge
    @ArcaneEdge 3 года назад +6

    Hello. First love the video, watched it like 20 times. I am looking to do the exact same but 3 times bigger. Following the same logic to use 12’ boards to minimize the cutting. How is the deck holding up after 8 months? You mention putting the boards together but not exactly show or talking about how you did it. And I believe in the beginning of the video there were stakes with your materials but you don’t mention using them. Did you use the same decking screws on the sides that you used for the top boards?

    • @sunnyvi3wz428
      @sunnyvi3wz428  3 года назад +3

      Deck is in same shape as built. I added more screws after video was posted. Same screws around the whole deck. If u want use longer screws. The stakes were use to frame the grass removal area as well as pin the pallets in the space I wanted while I screws them together and added the 1st few planks.

    Your family is awesome and the deck looks great. That pool is beyond nice!!!
    Had you painted the pallets--the deck stays nice for 10 years and then starts to crumble (underneath)
    Since you didn't, the deck has less than 5 years before soft spots begin and then the crumble is rapid.
    It would of been nice to use 3" screws so that they penetrated the pallets vertical boards.
    Your planks may work loose and twist with 2" screws not really anchoring into much.

    • @sunnyvi3wz428
      @sunnyvi3wz428  3 года назад

      Good advice. N Yes if we stained the pallets if would've added years but that would've added more time and paint. But since the pallets are not flat on the ground I'm expecting a good amount of time.

      @@sunnyvi3wz428 hey I have blue wood pallets in my yard 12 of them how hard is it to level out the dirt our yards isn’t really that bad how long did it take u to get everything done when we are finished we want to put a jacuzzi and gazebo on it

    • @sunnyvi3wz428
      @sunnyvi3wz428  3 года назад

      @@curtisnelson7765 The blue pallets are definitely heavier than the others along with the jacuzzi very heavy. With those I would recommend after you remove the grass and get down to the dirt, pound the dirt as much as you can for a firmer base. I used paver sand under 12"x12" pavers on each corners of the pallets to assist with the leveling and not have the pallets sit directly on the dirt to preserve the wood. If you have the time, paint the pallets with sealer to add some more years to it considering your jacuzzi will be a permanent fixture. Hope this info helps.

    And, two...question...what about removing wood from other pallets, using that instead of buying new wood. Tight budget. Is this feasible?

    • @sunnyvi3wz428
      @sunnyvi3wz428  2 года назад +1

      Yes it is feasible but ALOT more work. Not all pallets are in great condition to break down and use making me have to get even more pallets. I considered that as well but didn't want to spend the time as I would rather finish sooner and spend that time difference with my family.

    The base would be stronger if u alternated the directions of each pallet. Hopefully u screwed each pallet together too. Hopefully u left an 8th inch or 16th inch gap between the boards for drainage.

    • @sunnyvi3wz428
      @sunnyvi3wz428  3 года назад +1

      Alternating the pallets would've changed the measurements as they are not squared. All of the pallets are screwed together to form 1 big square. Yes a small space was left between each board not just for drainage but for expanding during different weather.

      I honestly do not know about cold climates but they sure as hell hold up through tropical weather. High heat and lots of rain with no issues. My rule of thumb is if you see pallets that sit outside of stores during this type of weather than they should be OK. Otherwise build it with pressure treated wood from scratch. Hope this helps.

      What do you mean by you not screwing on ends

    How much do you think this cost and how much do you think you saved using pallets instead of a footing type deck?

      Cost was approx. 250-300 for deck board, sealer, under deck prep, etc. And cost of using free pallets.... well....

    Great job! Do you have any concerns of the pallets rotting quickly? I don’t think you’re treated in any way.

      Thank you! As I have seen pallets left outside for long periods of time fully exposed for long periods of time. Mine are wrapped around with pressure treated boards as well as a gazebo to help with shade. The pallets also sit on a weed barrier and sit on pavers so the pallets to not sit on the ground and only exposed between the cracks of the boards. With that being said I DO NOT have any concerns of the pallets rotting. At least for my particular build and setup.
