My husband keeps talking me out of using pallet wood for a deck. Thank you for posting . There is no way he is talking me out of it come spring/ summer even if I do it without him
@@turo3066 I'll answer for him. Simply the wood used on pallets arent pressure treated which in time WILL ROT. Pressure treated wood have chemicals on them to keep from rotting on ground/weather contact. Please keep in mind that freight vendors purchase the cheapest cost efficient wood pallets that will hold thousands of dollars worth of product. Trust me I know this working for Home Depot. These guys did a great job just skipped on a couple of important factors that would have paid off. 1. The obvious in not using pressure treated wood and 2 not tampering the ground under the pavers and putting some kind of crushed gravel or limestone as well. In time the deck will start to get "spongy" while walking on it and unleveling itself due to wood pallets starting to rot along with soft ground. Nevertheless they did a good job.
Love it. Thank you. Consudering decking some of my space that is on gravel.. The wood needs to be saturated with a preservative in my case. However, this would be ideal if you need for a season or occassion. For longer, strongly recommend digging out organics at each concrete spot and pouring and packing a pint of crushed stone into the earth. Consider covering the grass with a bag of diatomaceous earth to reduce wood eating insects. When things get rotted, bigger critters start to move in!

With the weight of the pallets as well as securing the pallet boards(deck) to the pallets we didn't feel the need to secure them to the pavers. It turned out to be a very solid structure. Thanks for asking! ✌
We used 6 chep pallets for the base/foundation and around 10 plain pallets for the deck floor and side panels. Thanks for your feedback, we really appreciate it.
Awesome job you guys💪. Just one question please how far apart are the pavers would you say? I can always count on amazing people to help those like myself make these awesome projects😁😁😁✌️✌️
Thanks for that Tara. The center of each paver is 48" apart, which allows both pallets to be on the one paver. This would apply to any size pallet you intend on using for your project. Plus it makes it easier to level out your pallets and ground surface by placing two pallets on the same paver. Hope this information is helpful. Good luck with your project and feel free to text back if you have any further queries. Thanks again!
Great video! I am hoping to do this myself. I am a new homeowner and tool challenged, so forgive me, but how were you two reattaching the boards to the pallets? Was it a drill to start the hole for a screw and then screwing it in with the other drill? If so, what size screws? Also, How did you get all the pallets to stay together?
Thanks Chinea. We did drill a pilot hole for the screws, this prevents the boards from splitting when screwing into the boards. We used #10 x 2 1/2" screws. The sheer weight of the pallets once butted together keeps them in place and are secured once you screw the boards into the pallets. I hope this is helpful, if not, feel free to contact me. Will be more than happy to help out if needed. Thanks again and good luck with your project. ✌
@@kinlockskorner6862so you two dismantled a bunch of other pallets to reclaim the boards? I am looking at doing a 20’x13’ deck out of pallets, no idea how many I would need to take apart to have enough deck boards
@@derek5 i bought a pallet(shrinkwrapped) of pallet boards already dismantled from a local pallet co. But to give you a rough estimate, an average pallet is approximately 4' x 4'. So going by your dimensions, you'll need around 18-20 pallets unless you find a place like i did that sell pallets of pallet boards. Hope this helps with your project ✌
Thanks Katherine. I dug out a trench and laid the pallets (66 in total) on their sides giving it that picket fence look. Each pallet was attached with a metal cleat (they are metal plate about 3"x 2" with spikes on the underside) The cleats are shown in the DIY pallet deck video. Each pallet also has a 2' long pallet board hammered into the ground where the pallets butt up to each other and screwed into the pallets for added support. This was done on both sides of the fence (inside and outside) I hope this information was helpful for you and thanks again for your feedback, we really appreciate it.
I see that you placed down plastic befor you began where did you purchase the roll how many for the square footage of your project Should be purchased?
Nice video, a few niggles though as we would like to have seen how you connected all the pallets together and how you connected it to the base.maybe to much hyperlapse lol
All the pallets are connected by all the pallet boards that run diagonally across the pallets as shown in the video. We didn't feel the need to connect each pallet individually as the amount of screws connecting all the pallet boards to the pallets is more than enough. Believe me this deck is definitely secure.
Thanks Helen. We bought the Chep pallets for $3 each from our local grocery store. We also bought a pallet load of pallet slats (4' x 4' x 6') which equated to approximately 400 slats, from a Pallet Company we found on FB Marketplace. Those 400 slats cost us $50, which was quite reasonable when you consider how many pallets you would have to break down. Glad you enjoyed our project!
@@kinlockskorner6862 thanks, I'm thinking maybe it was an extra maybe unneeded step. Do you think the cloth is required at all? As the deck ceases any light from being able to hit the soil?
That's correct Gloria, i purchased 400 pallet boards from a company for $50. The company sells them shrinkwrapped to a pallet which stands about 6' tall. So that's a lot of pallets i didn't have to break down. For $50, i thought it was worth it.

This was done on both sides of the fence (inside and outside) I hope this information was helpful for you and thanks again for your feedback, we really appreciate it.

Ernestine, here is the link to the weed mat that were purchased : amzn.to/3S3EQjP the roll is 3' x 50'
I just bought pallets nine of them how many pavers do i have to get 32?
@leenad.9784 you would only need 16 pavers, (4 rows of 4 pavers) for 9 pallets, (3 rows of 3 pallets)
Like this idea thanks
You're welcome @callieduval3000 ✌
This is awesome I can do this
Thank you so much. Good luck with your project.
It's really nice! Thank you❤
Thank you so much @hagarhayoun7957 we really appreciate your feedback ✌
Sweet, good job, tks!
You're welcome, glad you enjoyed it!
Hi, nice work. Where did you buy the pallets and how much does it cost for each?
Thanks Helen. We bought the Chep pallets for $3 each from our local grocery store. We also bought a pallet load of pallet slats (4' x 4' x 6') which equated to approximately 400 slats, from a Pallet Company we found on FB Marketplace. Those 400 slats cost us $50, which was quite reasonable when you consider how many pallets you would have to break down. Glad you enjoyed our project!
@@kinlockskorner6862 thanks for the quick response..did you get it from walmart?
@@helenmeneses6822 No, there is a small grocery store nearby. You can check on Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist in your area for pallets.
He top planks are removed from pallets or are purchased wood planks?
We purchased these as is, from a local dealer. The top planks are just pallet wood we pulled off other pallets.
Ll the grass actually grow up through when no light will be there with the deck ontop?
It's been a year since we built this, and not one single weed has come through. I think with the weed cloth and no light, that did the trick.
@@kinlockskorner6862 thanks, I'm thinking maybe it was an extra maybe unneeded step. Do you think the cloth is required at all? As the deck ceases any light from being able to hit the soil?
@@jasonmoroney7962 it's hard to say, but if that cloth roll isn't an option, throwing down some cardboard underneath would serve the same purpose.
I love this
Thank you so much @jennifermccullough9705 ✌
For the top did you say that is pallet board? Is that pallets that have been broken down?
That's correct Gloria, i purchased 400 pallet boards from a company for $50. The company sells them shrinkwrapped to a pallet which stands about 6' tall. So that's a lot of pallets i didn't have to break down. For $50, i thought it was worth it.
@@kinlockskorner6862 I enjoyed watching your DIY. I’m currently building one. What company did you buy your pallet boards from? Thanks a lot for sharing! 😊
@@momofnoah07 thank you so much for your feedback. I went to a small recycling company in Joplin Missouri. If i recall i think the name was Triple R Recycling. Good luck with your deck!
i love it thank youi
Thank you so much @CreativeFishDesignsCharlotte We really appreciate your great feedback ✌
