I didn`t intend to make use of this woodworking book, t.co/oLg9l5gL3F but rather curious about it. I had been truly amazed right after trying it. It never disappointed me in my wish to acquire more information about the art of wood working. Many topics were covered, including everything from wood types to developing your workshop.?
I found just over 100 pallets on an industrial estate, locked up in a yard that the owner wanted clearing to rent out for another use. The security guard said I could have all the pallets as long as I removed them ALL within 4 days and left the concrete yard totally empty and clean. OMG! I could only fit 4 paletts in my small truck at a time, so I ended up doing just under 30x4 mile journeys between the unit and my house in 4 days. I did leave the yard spotlessly clean and within a day or so it was full of HUGE recycled purple plastic compost bins stacked about 15ft high! I broke down the 106 paletts into planks and chunks. The 'chunks' were packed in 20kg bags and sold as firewood for £4 a bag. I made about 60 garden planters which sold for about £15 each and a picket fence to surround a neighbours front and side garden. About 60ft or so for £100. Managed to raise just over £1000 which was donated to a local community garden project. It was a really enjoyable experience but I never want to see another wooden palett again! 😊
When I worked on a farm I made a green house for myself out of pallets with a door with hinges. All I needed was some good strong plastic at the time for the outer coating. It was great at the time for my tomatoes and to jump in when the weather got wet while gardening. That was over 35 years ago. Now been older the possibilities are endless as to what to do with pallets.
I've been making custom gun racks from pallets for a few years now. They sell from $50-$500. All it takes is a single pallet, quality hardware and quality craftsmanship.
A note of caution; If your planning to use used pallets find out what was stored on them first, chemicals, fertilizer, old porta-pottys, etc. Some of that stuff is highly toxic and can not be removed from the wood once absorbed....
I use pallets and other scavenged materials in my shop for all my projects. To me it’s a little fun taking them apart. On RUclips there are a lot of different ways to dismantle pallets. I use different ways, it depends a lot on what the wood is.
Do you treat it with weather proof varnish for outside? I want to make a small dog house and small play ground for my small dogs. They are not playful but I’m still gonna try make backyard fun for them.
With the cost of lumber going through the roof, it's great to see pallets be put to a second use. We have an elevated floor in part of our garage because when it floods and then freezes, we can't go in it or get anything out of it. With the pallets, we just walk over the flooding or the ice.
If you went through with this make sure to get something to kill termites in case there are some in the pallet wood. Had a buddy do this years ago and we don’t have termite issues here and they came in with a few of the pallets was the conclusion and the shop lasted about 2 years.
I used pallets to Make new kitchen cabinet doors. a built in storage area. Storage boxes for the garden. Takes some effort breaking them down but can't complain at free wood
I wish I could post pics on here of my 3 pallet by 2 pallet pool with a patio attached. It's similar to the pond. Granted I covered and stained it with lumber from the lumber yard it saved me a TON of money using them for the frame. Normally I wouldn't have thought to build a pool with them but our yard is long and narrow, and the only pools I could find in the right dimensions were shallow kid pools.
I love that you included different variations of each main idea. Thank you! Edit: What a wide variety of ideas... my wheels are definitely turnin', so I"ll be busy got the next 6 mos. or so; if anybody needs me, lol. Great video compilation!
You forgot to mention that pallets are a good source of fire wood since they are, normally, free and made out of hard wood (most of them anyway). For years I heated my cinder block garage in winter, with this stuff , let alone the barbecues in summer that I made in of my home made grill. Greetings from Toronto.
I have watched all of it and am amazed what You can do with timber. Still worth saving and to put to good use. Let Your ideas come to preserve what could only go to a Tip. No more, timber is still a very fine alternative to brick and mortar.
Before you start making furniture for your home / flat from pallets woods, let me cool you enthusiasm. Some pallets can be impregnated with chemicals that may not necessarily be healthy for you. So be careful
I haven't seen a chemically sprayed pallet for years. The are almost all treated HT, ( High Temperature), now, to kill insects and their eggs. Perfectly safe.
The company I work for lets people take them for whatever they want. I made multiple sheds out of pallets for storing firewood. Very simple to do. And pallets that are damaged or broken use for firewood also
Liam Gregory I wish they would do that in my town. Their stingy here. Even they school I teach in. Piles of pallets sitting around rotting. I just die when I see it because I just want to create.
They give them away for free, so they don't have to pay a large fee, at the landfill, for hazardous waste....I am from farm country, and they reuse these things over and over by different companies,.....NEVER bring this wood into your home....I got a pallet for free and it had been sloshed with RoundUp and there was a reason my raised garden bed made from that pallet never grew anything...BE AWARE THE CHEMICAL DANGERS!!!! Do not use old pallets to house your pets or livestock!!!!
Mooving On you need to check the codes on the pallet, they will tell you where they're from and how they have been treated. HT means heat treated and are perfectly safe for raised beds as an example
Usually not they usually are made of wood that can be outside for long periods of time, but that being said they may be treated with arsenic or other chemicals to ward off rats and bugs so give thought to your uses, do your homework, some have numbers on them indicating use.
To get free pallets I drive around the industrial Park. Some places have a pile that says free. Sometimes I ask if they have free pallets. I loved the ideas in this video!
Pallet should be reused, I tried 1 pallet tranformed to my shoes rack in 30minutes with only 3 tools at my home. Satisfied and I will do some more idea project maybe transformed to become a chair. Everyone could DIY the pallet.
Some pallets have a " burnt on stamp " on the base beam with an identifying code for example " HT " THIS MEANS THE TIMBER USED IS " HEAT TREATED " and is chemical free .
I've seen homeless people simply connect two together and use them as a sort of bed frame. I also seen them go all out and build makeshift houses out of them.
Whoever made the video just posted pictures of things made with pallets. I have worked with this things a is a pain to work with. Really difficult to take apart, because they are made to carry heavy loads they are constructed very well. If you have the time and patience give it a try and good luck.
Something that's not mentioned in this presentation is the fact that pallets are treated with harmful chemicals unless they are used for shipping foodstuffs .
Although you may get pallets for free...it is realy labour intensive to dis-assemble and restore the boards. So, ×10 the effort of using regular boards.
Also, pallets have god-knows what kind of things spilled on them. Making things from chemical and mould ridden crap doesn't sound such a good idea. But I'm only a carpenter, so what do I know?
all this time I've been misusing all this stuff ......i was loading trucks with them, what a bloody waste
