I have worked in warehousing. I would never do this unless it was a brand new and untreated pallet. Most pallets at some point get all sorts of nasty chemicals spilled on them. Pallets are reused hundreds of times and you never know what has been on them

The ones to stay away from are marked “MB” that’s treated with methyl bromide. Look for ones stamped with “HT” or “KD” and you’re good to go. Just look for the best pallets possible (not in the back of a chemical plant) and you got some decent wood to work with.

I've been making these for years and selling them, and you need to line the bottom of the wood other wise it will rott. Also spray with wood spray paint to make the wood water proof so that they don't Rott.. its the same with out door furniture. Also alot of pallets have been sat out in the rain etc so make sure any pallets you do get put them somewhere warm like inside to dry the wood out.... The wood spray paint you will get at B&Ms if in the US you have that store or any hardware store I'm Scottish. But please take heed as you don't want your hard wood work ruined in the first 3 months.... sorry for spelling mistakes. I make thinks, don't write alot. 🤣🤣 xx

Only one thing i'd suggest, If that unit will be outdoors in the weather, you should use Titebond 2 or 3 on every joint, As that pallet wood starts to absorb moisture the brads will let loose, Or 1 1/4 deck screws will stand the outside. Great idea for sure.

This wood isn't treated, so it will quickly get water damage. The soil will retain water too, but you didn't use any kind of liner to protect the wood. And because it will swell and warp, those nails will soon pull out.
An improvement would be to use an outdoor stain or paint on the wood, get pots that fit in or get liner and drill holes in the wood and liner for water drainage. And use screws.

Also he used a Brad nailer to frame it, which I agree was a terrible idea. That's more for trim, baseboard, etc etc. That's mostly used in the finishing stages to hide nail heads. He should have used a screw set with high sheer strength or pneumatic nails.

I fixed 2 pieces of wood to the bottom to lift it 2 feet off the ground and take the weight, and it just needed 2 small brackets at the top to hold it against the wall. We then planted it with herbs and salad leaves.

Yes, your herbs can grow that big but there are a few issues with that:
      1) not everyone has the space to let their herbs go crazy
      2) unkept herbs can look like weeds if you don't tend to it and
      3) you might be giving your herbs too much nitrogen.
If you have even a small planter, you can grow a satisfactory amount of herbs if you let it bush out. Also, for any and all edible plants, fertilize with anything that has the highest number last (i.e. lots of Potassium, like 315)

We had to bust up used pallets at work, and eventually, we used a saw to cut them up to avoid the nails/staples used in their manufacturing. I also agree they are often saturated with toxic chemicals. That's 40+ years of experience.

Been done a million times. And I’ve done quite a few ‘projects’ with pallets and I can’t remember any of them coming apart that easily, most are put together with wire nails, a real pain to get out.

They dont - the nails are designed not to come out easily - if they did they would be useless as a transport medium. The wood splits before the nails give. So make sure you have plenty of pallets for the plant wall 😅

@@johnmason139 I use a cats paw to remove the nails, might still split a little because they are heat treated usually. But I've removed many pallet board easily, some not so much lol. Some will ruin but that's to be expected I suppose.
You can get real cheap pallets where I live almost home made style that aren't as well built, I've seen them around. I actually have a stack a pallets out back now I'm going to build wood storage for my cut wood. 🙂👍

Even if it turns out wrong initially, you usually have the "gusto" to redo the wrong and make your adjustments to get your desired result!! Just attempting to be creative and jumping in to try to get a specific result that you have in mind is invigorating... even if it needs tweaking!!!👍

You don’t have to do it that way if it’s too difficult for you … just use a Sharpie or find someone with nice handwriting to do it for you 😊 Try thinking positively first time & always - please don’t criticise a good idea, that’s being shared free of charge, just to be helpful … think about ways it could be done to make your life easier or share it with someone else who might value the idea! 👍🏻😘

One problem wood and water do not mix. Especially when you have sod that holds moisture sitting against the boards. We get very little rain here but yet the bottom of our fence boards are decaying and they are off the ground slightly and made for weather. Pallets are not and I'm not saying this is a bad idea. I'm saying a lot more needs to be done and I think you know this but trying to make it look quick and easier than it is. If not you'll find out soon enough.

Notice that was the only ‘nicer’ looking pallet in the pile? It looked as if someone already sanded it down & gently placed it on the junk pile. Pass. I wouldn’t trust what the wood could have absorbed. If you could make it as a window box holder, so you can grow your herbs in a clean window box, then maybe ok, but not just dirt. Also, most people don’t have a garage full of tools you’d need to do this.
