He also played his daughter in that movie - Why is anybody's guess - Also Eddie Murphy played his entire family in The Nutty Professor remake. Also in that terrible (In the best way possible) 90s version of Captain America, Caps girlfriend before he gets frozen plays her daughter in the future.
I think of Rise as the Original Timeline, what really happened that set up the original Planet of the Apes. While Conquest is more like an alternate timeline due to Taylors appearance altering things and the apes going back in time.
I'd like to think of it that way too, but it doesn't really line up because Charlton Heston and his crew were obviously from a more futuristic Earth than the Earth that gets wiped of humans at the end of 'Rise'.
I actually like Beneath the Planet of the Apes quite a bit. It was super odd and imaginative. Enough was different to keep me intrigued. It can be argued that it was a stupid direction to take the series in, but just on its own I think it's quite alright.
Man, Beneath always seems to be that one that people either love or hate, usually, it seems, they hate. To me, it's always been my favorite of the original string of sequels. I really like the mutants, who scared the hell out of me as a kid, and the entire climax, it has an ending with serious balls. Of all the sequels and re-makes I think it feels the most like the original.
Aww. Kinda disappointing that he didn't like "Beneath." The dark, hopeless tone was really interesting to me and the ending of everyone dying was like....damn. Oh well, different strokes for different folks. It was cool that apparently he read the book though! I hope he reviews that some time as that story is pretty weird too.
I watched all the original movies a few years ago and you're spot on. Definitely excited for the new film. Andy Serkis deserves something for this work.
the only rating I disagree with is beneath. I actually love that one. I love how it goes in deeper (quite literally) into what the earth is like. I love how just truly uneasy you feel with the mutants and their religion of worshiping a nuclear bomb and the ending, while depressing, was a great warning on what could happen if we aren't careful. I get why some people might not like it. but to me, a strong 4 apes.
Personally I would have given Dawn at least 4.5 - 5 apes. It doesn't quite live up to the original but the apes are given so much depth and can make you feel overwhelming amounts of emotion in long stretches of minimal to no dialogue with the only thing keeping you going is the character performances. The only thing holding it back from the original is in my opinion is the expositional dialogue and maybe the fact that the humans never feel quite as fleshed out as the apes. I've heard War pretty much fixes those issues though so I can't wait to see it.
"...humans who speak telepathically and peel off their faces..." LOL, I love Beneath the Planet of the Apes so much but the way he said just that makes me laugh so much too.
My theory on the Wahlberg movie ending: 1) When Wahlberg's ship appears to go forward in time, it is really going backward in time. I think he says something about the instruments not working when this happens. 2) They arrive on Earth in the distant past so they dont recognize it. 3) Because of their actions, history is changed such that the apes develop society instead of the humans (maybe the apes, having to confront the reality of the humans as more intelligent, are more aggressive in putting them down).. 4) Wahlberg then goes back to the future (although he thinks he is going to the past) and returns to a changed Earth.
Christian Bale was too weak of a Batman for that to be the best rebooted series. The villains made those movies, and it really should have an emphasis on the internal conflict Batman feels if it wants to go as dark and realistic as it tried. But it didn't, and probably no fault of Bale's, moreso of the writing and directing. On topic, probably yes, best rebooted series. Mad Max was good too for a pure action flick.
I really enjoy the 2001 film. That was the one I grew up with before the new series of films came out. I love the original film from 1968 too. Absolute classic. I’d say my five favorites are the 68 film, the 2001 film, and the new reboot trilogy.
I actually agree 100% with James' ranking of the series. Cool. Although, I think Escape is easily the best other than the original, and Dawn is flawed; I'd only give it 3/5 apes. Good review James.
‘Escape’ was the sole sequel I really liked. The end was tragic and if you think about it was the groundwork for what they had happen in ‘War for the Planet of the Apes’
3:00 You don't see this every day, but I immediately thought of Kurt Russell in Backdraft, he played the father in a flashback and the son for the rest of the movie
3rd Rated I was thinking the exact same thing. Now, I do see comments saying he actually does like modern films and that may be true, however, he will NEVER rate a modern film higher than an older film. He thought the original Godzilla was better than Godzilla(2014). I've seen both and in my opinion the original is not better. He thought the original POTA was better than the reboot series. Dawn alone was better than the original.
I remember walking in to a room where my father and some family friends were watching Beneath and I was weirded out by seeing normal city structures in a cave system. I said to my father: "What is this, I don't understand.". He tried to explain what it means, but I didnt get any of it so i started smashing together Ninja Turtles and Power Rangers toys. Poor man, god bless him.
Really liked the review and timely! Because of this review I bought The Planets Of The Apes Legacy Collection during my last Costco trip! Here's to rounding out my sci-fi film collection!
Rise and Dawn are two of the best films of the decade in my opinion. War will probably surpass the two before and I cannot wait to see it. It has a lot of emotion and character depth that was lacking in the original series, minus the original of course.
I like Dawn more than Rise because of the Rivalry between Ceasar and the other Ape. That is so awesome. The war he starts up is done well. I can't wait to see what Woody Harrelson does in the up coming film.
Here’s my ranking: 1. Planet of the Apes 2. Escape From the Planet of the Apes 3. Conquest of the Planet of the Apes 4. Beneath the Planet of the Apes 5. Battle for the Planet of the Apes
The second one was a little stale but could have been better by just finding a better way of doing the bomb/escape thing. It was a bit too vague and bizarre. Something that's a little more plausible in an otherwise improbable story... but it is Sci-Fi. Another thing, if time codes are checked in all 5 films then at some point Taylor is going to crash land again.
I would imagine the reason Tim Burton said Batman returns wasn't a sequel to Batman was because it might have been a different tone and much more darker. Unless he was talking about the 1966 version in which case that's definitely the case
I agree with your assessment. I really love the reboot. I find it is underrated in a way. N one talks about it but it makes its money and they are good movies.
I am surprised James liked the reboot saga, I mean he always tend to preffer the originals above the new movies, but in this one, only one of the original saga surpassed your rating for the the new ones. I do agree that the Rise... movie did almost everything well, I actually think is moving and very emotional. I want now to rewatch it this weekend. Nice review and nice Ape rating jejeje
I recommended to my dad watching with me 'Rise of the planet of the apes''. he loved it. Then we watched "Dawn of the planet of the apes" and with this one , although he is not a movie watcher , he became a fan. We are going to watch the new movie at the cinema in about a week. ;)
For me conquest is the best of the original series, but War is my favorite of them all and I see the three new ones as prequels to the original series.
I am quite young and have only seen the last two and I also thought they were great and I would have been surprised if long time fans would have criticized it.
Im not a fan of the film because chimps kinda freak me out. But I could listen you talk about anything. I love your voice and your point of view on things.
Hey James, how about you do a dysthopathon? like Metropolis, 1984, Brazil, Children of men, Alphaville, Logans run, fahrenheit 451, Thx 1138 etc etc etc. it would be awesome to hear your take on the older movies versus the more modern. Love your serious work aswell as the Nerd. Keep it up !
My rankings for the original 5 5. Battle for the Planet of the Apes 4. Beneath the Planet of the Apes 3. Escape the Planet of the Apes 2. Conquest of the Planet of the Apes 1. Planet of the Apes
I'm glad he at least noted the 2001 ending was similar to the ending of the book. I felt like I'm the ONLY one that got that, like I've been living on the planet of the apes......wait......
My personal ranking: Dawn of the Planet of the Apes Rise of the Planet of the Apes Planet of the Apes (1968) Conquest of the Planet of the Apes Battle for the Planet of the Apes Beneath the Planet of the Apes Planet of the Apes (2001) Escape from the Planet of the Apes
I don't seen anything wrong with a Planet of the Apes remake, saw it in theaters as a kid and loved it. The original on the other hand had aged quite a bit. So it makes sense for me to make a remake at that point to introduce a newer generation to the series.
2:55 The only actor that he can think of playing father and son.
What about Michael J. Fox as Marty Mcfly and Marty Mcfly Jr.
If so, Caesar's name would eventually have to be changed to Aldo since he was the one who started the revolution by saying "No" in the originals.
I'd like to think of it that way too, but it doesn't really line up because Charlton Heston and his crew were obviously from a more futuristic Earth than the Earth that gets wiped of humans at the end of 'Rise'.
That's an interesting theory
Shiirow That was my original thought actually.
@Nathaniel Arndt They do reference it in Rise because at one point the launch of the Icarus, Charlton Heston's ship, is shown on TV in the background.
James: “Remakes are usually different from the originals anyway”
*Disney has left the chat*
SPACEBALLS?!! Oh shit, there goes the planet.

Should have been one to five bananas.
But Zira loathes bananas.
Steve Anderson Don't be silly. That's how you rate the Donkey Kong games.
Some groups of people would take offense to that.
DrPastah Mostly actual apes. They hate being stereotyped. Though, there are plenty of humans who would be offended on their behalf.
Nah ape is better
The prequel trilogy is nothing but one masterpiece after another. They are all fantastic. I would give all three of them five apes.

1 star for Beneath is pretty harsh. It was at the very least interesting and that ending packs a huge punch.
Japeth321 One Ape, you mean
Battle was worse.
Agreed.. don’t get it.. 3/5
Extremely informative and professional , yet casual and relatable . I give this video 5 out of 5 jameses

Different strokes for different folks I guess 🤷
The last 2 movies have been great.
Really looking forward to the newest one.
Intimidation Eh. They're ok.
They have. They are much better than the original reboot. But they can never beat the original series
awesome
Here's hoping War will be just as good if not better. Seriously though, how are these movie so damn good?

Totally agree
Agreed Beneath is good, I can see why people don't like it but I like how dark and bleak it is and the entire message of the film.
Should have ended right there
It sucks that they never made that remake that was going to star Arnold Schwarzenegger.
"SEE YOU AT DA PAHTY CEZAR!!"
"If they bleed, we can kill them."
"Hey Cezah, remember when I told you I'd eat your banana last?"
"...hu?" c(OIO)p
"I LIED..."
c(*oV●*)p
"Grr....HU HU HU HU HUUU!"
"I eat chimps like you for breakfast, and right now (rrah) I am very hungry!"
Cesar: "Who are you??"
Arnold: "I'm the terminator. Living tissue over metal endoskeleton."
I really liked the 2nd movie because it feels like an old Star Trek episode.
Way too harsh on Beneath...the ending alone pushes it much higher in watchability than the sequels that followed it...
I was in Rise of the Planet of the Apes so it's nice to get 4 Apes.
(The Golden Gate scene). Thanks.
I would agree with all your assessments.
