    I saw this at the theaters in 1968. I had no idea of the ending and it sent chills down my back. I also hadn't realized the double meaning there was. Having Roddy as one of the main characters was icing on the cake.

      @Charles 22 How COOL....I always wondered what audiences in the theatre thought about that ending! I saw it on television and it was in the back of my mind WHY do apes on another planet speak English, why are there horses, etc.

      I went into the movie knowing the ending, but that didn't lessen the impact when Dr. Zaius revealed all that he knew, and his true motives came to light. I couldn't find any reason to think of him as a villain and it floored me. Saw it yesterday and I'm still in awe

      I saw it on TV with my dad in the 90s. It don't remember much but I do remember feeling a lot of dread and sadness. Taylor survived that long just to witness humanity's sad remains. The symbol of peace, the statue, was the perfect item to place there.

      i wish i was you. the moment i knew what was the ending of planet of the apes, it was when i saw the one made in 2001, wich is such a bad movie compared to the original. But even with that, i still was mindblown when i saw the original's ending, even if i knew it, it was perfectly made.

    I'm surprised you missed the main theme of this film. Taylor left earth because he hated humanity. He even says early in the film as the reason he left mankind & the earth behind: "..there has to be something out there better than man. Has to be." This man, who was so full of hate for humanity, has now ended up being humanity's lone defender.
    That is the brilliance of Rod Serling. How could you have missed this??

    • @StormsparkPegasus
      @StormsparkPegasus 7 лет назад +7

      Yeah it's true...I guess you can say that even if you hadn't seen it by 1998, you had to know the ending because it had been referenced and parodied to death by then. Spaceballs parodied it in 1986.

      It's ironic within the context of the dialogue being presented how today everything is spoiled, while in the past they never thought of doing something so obvious. The video he is holding, which is in itself rather old, is doing exactly what he was saying didn't happen in the past. When the outcome is contrary to the expectation, that is irony.
      He also is using sarcasm and satire, just in case you missed those as well.

    You have to consider this was during the late 60's. Civil Rights was the main issue and turmoil in Vietnam that the generation protested as an immoral war. This feuled the common theme of the movie. Government not listening to the tax payer and basically suppress society with a lot of cover-up and misdirection. Gene Roddenberry also wrote some Star Trek episodes based on the common problems of the day.

    At the start of the movie, it already foreshadows the ending. Taylor spoke about how the people listening to him on Earth must be a new breed by then, hopefully a better one. And the one that heard what he said could be Dr. Zaius himself. Thus he wrote those scrolls.

    I have to say that I am impressed with the analysis of "Planet of the Apes" by Cinemassacre. The commentary was spot on and I think that EVERY movie deserves a critical analysis from time to time. Wonderful!

    I can't believe I got so far in life without having the ending spoiled. I just finished the movie and enjoyed the ending. I can't believe the showed the ending on the cover though, lol.

    4:28 "Don't watch the rest of this video, it will only spoil it, and--" **closes video**
    I'll trust James and finally watch that movie. I'll be back later to finish his review. I watched the new Planet of the Apes on a plane, with the CGI apes and it was crap. The original can't be any worse, and if it's anything like James says, it'll actually be epic.

    I agree about the apes speaking English and Taylor not noticing this almost immediately. I mean imagine the odds of coming to a planet in a different solar system as Taylor thought and the inhabitants just conveniently speak English.

      ivanher07 The only logical explanation for why they screwed the cover is: The people buying the VHS copy had already seen the movie & knew the plot twist. But the cover does ruin the surprise for newcomers to the series
