  • As the title says, this mouse meets its demise somewhere within my pet corn snake, Quetzal.
    Before anyone asks: Yes, she knows how to constrict prey when necessary. This prey was not a threat, so constriction wasn't needed. Yes, she did eat the other two mice, but I didn't get those on camera. No, I don't always feed her this much, but I was going on a vacation soon after, so I gave her a little extra to eat.

    That little smile on her face when she finishes swallowing him is so adorable it almost makes you forget what just happened 😊😅

    This is incredible! It's a real achievement for a snake to swallow a mouse the wrong way and very impressive to watch. Thanks for managing to film this and share it with us, esspecially managing to film the mouses head going down the snakes throat like that, wow!
    Shame about the very blurry quality when you tried to get up close tho, could just make out what is going on.
    I hope you manage to catch your corn snake gulping more mice whole and alive like this.

      Thanks! When I saw the footage for the first time, I was really frustrated for not knowing how to focus properly. I have another similar video, but this time, the lighting wasn't as nice (ruclips.net/video/pJfGCE4hn1c/видео.html). Ah, well...
      She always swallows the baby mice alive, though I do mostly feed her adult mice or rat pups because they are more nutritious.
      Eventually she'll devour one like this again for us to see.

    why do you call the mouse unfortunate? It got a free home in a snake for the rest of its entire life.

    • @MontagnaMagica
      @MontagnaMagica  3 года назад +1

      Unfortunate in that it was born a feeder mouse and only got to live a couple of days. As far as potential ways to go, this mouse was pretty fortunate, in my opinion.

    Do you know the size (length, weight, whatever) of your snake? This is very interesting, and I wonder if something similar would happen with a larger snake and larger prey.

    • @MontagnaMagica
      @MontagnaMagica  3 года назад +1

      This video is actually about a year old, and at the time, she was getting close to 4 feet in length. I don't have a scale to measure weight.
      This is the preferred method for snakes if it can be done safely. The reason being that constriction actually takes a lot of energy. So to answer your question, theoretically, yes. However, most larger prey would be too dangerous (teeth, claws, etc...), and the snake is smart enough to know when to constrict.
      I am hoping to hatch some quail eggs in the future to vary the diet a bit more. They are a little bigger prey than this mouse, but also very docile. I am curious what will happen.

      @@ParietalCell1492 Hopefully! I have been looking into ways to vary her diet a bit more. Even though a corn snake technically could live off of 100% mice, I want her to try some other prey too. In fact, I already have an incubator for quail eggs, and a feeder gecko is currently en route.

      To answer your question, yes, snakes need the warmth to keep their metabolism in working order. I suppose you are correct, in theory, and I do live in a very warm climate, but I regulate the temps at least somewhat. Neither of us wants to live in oppressive heat constantly!
