Joe Schmoe check out how they eat baby ducks sickening...the entire bird species are sick as hell bird on bird shit...herons are officially on my shit list
True story that might also apply to herons. The beak on a seagull is some really tough material. We were feeding bread to seagulls one time. They were hovering in front of us maybe a couple feet away or so. One of them came to take the bread. The OUTSIDE of his beak hit my finger. It felt like my finger had been struck by a hard rock. New respect! If the heron's beak is as hard as a seagull's...
l3ulldozer: Yep, herons actually eat quite a few land mammals. There are even records of bats being eaten. As for eating live prey, most herons are experienced enough not to do what this one does; they at least try to stun it first. As was pointed out below, live prey can damage the esophagus. It can even be fatal; there's plenty of records of herons eating live stickleback fish and choking to death.
+Dreambarks That's what most of them do. They'll whack it unconscious (or kill it outright) then swallow it. That's a whole lot safer for the predator. Great Egrets are the ones that tend to eat live, but they have somewhat different menus then Great Blue Herons.
+Archibald Mirenopteryx I thought the bird was trying to soften the fish so that it would go down more easily. But I've also seen a Cormorant repeatedly trying to swallow a fish it had caught that was just to big to fit!
everyone is like "that squirrel will claw and bite that heron's internal organs" ummm yeah you guys all really think herons are not adapted to safely eat small mammals?
+fontenayperi Exactly my thoughts. If the squirrel were smart and hadn't allowed the stress from being swallowed by a predator far stronger and huger than it to engulf its thought process, it could have clawed and bit its way out the heron's stomach or throat. I guess this depends on what kind of squirrel it was because some squirrels are big and nasty when cornered, capable of tearing through flesh effortlessly with their teeth since they can crack nuts open with ease. Might be wishful thinking but it's a possibility.
I mean there's no way the squirrel could be alive in it's stomach there's no way of breathing in that bird stomach. So it most likely died of suffocation. Or the stomach crushed it with it's walls
Imagine while it is struggling and wriggling inside your throat, it's simultaneously defecating and urinating AND vomitting inside your throat as it loses control of all of it's bodily functions due to it being in the throes of it's death's grip.
That heron probably regurgitated the ground squirrel, since the heron didn’t kill the squirrel before consuming it, the squirrel could easily avoid being digested in the stomach and could start gnawing at the walls of the esophagus causing great pain and discomfort. Inducing the heron to expel it.
Predators that routinely swallow prey alive have evolved very tough throats and stomachs. Some birds even swallow broken glass to use as gizzard stones, and their throats and stomachs are far too tough to cut them. The surfaces are so slick with mucous, and so flexible that the prey creatures are also unable to put any weight behind their scratching efforts.
your filming is extraordinary, until fairly recently I thought Heron were just fish eaters. but thanks to youtube and wonderful people like yourself, I have been enlightened, having seen videos of them eating, Rats, Duck and all manner of things.
I wonder what type of damage a live squirrel can do in its throat/stomach. Swallowing a live rodent seems like some medieval torture method. I know that birds have really strong stomach acid, but even the strongest acids won't dissolve a rodent instantly. It would probably die from suffocation way before the acid kills it. If it dies from suffocation, it means it would be alive/conscious for a minute or maybe more. That is plenty of time for it to get a few nasty bites and scratches on the throat/stomach, which could be lethal, or cause permanent damage to the bird. I had pet rats before, they would chew through hard plastic, walnut shells, fabric, and pretty much anything you throw at them. They only thing is they may not have enough strength, or not realize what they need to do.
andrew, that makes no sense, it's natural for predators to eat prey, but it's also natural for prey to run or fight back, so why would you feel sorry for the heron being injured in a fight?
Yeah but that is natural, sometimes trying to kill prey doesn't go as planned. You can't not be sorry for prey, then feel sorry for predators who get hurt. If your just concerned about it suffering needlessly then fine, but living beings just suffer at one point or another, it's natural.

I mean there's no way the squirrel could be alive in it's stomach there's no way of breathing in that bird stomach. So it most likely died of suffocation. Or the stomach crushed it with it's walls
