When a heron eats ducklings, there is nothing a mother duck can do to stop this animal hunting!

  • Young avian animals of varying proportions and portions are caught and eaten by a hungry heron for prey food eating. The heron is hunting in duck nesting habitats, and a mother duck can do nothing to protect her offspring from this kind of wild predatory eating behavior. The ducks are a lot smaller than the herons, and because of this, a mother duck is unable to adequately defend herself and her offspring from an aggressive Heron that eats ducklings. The heron is a species of meat-eating wading birds. The heron is not known as a bird of prey, but it is a predatory hunting bird. The heron attacks and feeds on other animals because they are carnivorous predators; they are top predators and are exceptional hunters of all kinds of prey animals that live and breed throughout the world. Herons have an incredible instinct to attack and eat other animals, and this type of feeding behavior has evolved over millions of years to enable them to have an extensive menu of wild protein-rich food. The herons have a very diverse diet of meat from hunting and eating other animals, and they especially like feeding on ducks, ducklings, waterbirds, rats, rodents, and other small mammals and birds and a wide variety of marine creatures that live in seawater and freshwater. The heron can be seen actively hunting and eating baby birds and other animal babies throughout the breeding seasons, especially when these animals live and breed in the herons' natural habitats. The herons can be found living and breeding in almost every habitat close to water throughout the world.

There are a lot of "meat pod" animals; they have no offense or defense, no means of resisting whats done to them by another entity, they only put all their evolutionary traits into shitting out kids and growing really fast to bumrush to the next generation.
Hell even some animals that _can_ prey on others are mostly this same way, they are just better at getting the other animals into their mouths faster so they typically win out, but can be treated much the same way by an entity they cant just up and swallow whole.

Plenty of animals eat ducklings right in front of the mother: fish, gulls, herons, sometimes even turtles. These animals aren't being cruel; they need to eat to survive while expending as little energy as possible. Also, the ducklings that get eaten are usually the ones who stray from mother--by natural selection, the ones that survive are the ones that DON'T wander too far. Mom has a lot of ducklings because statistically, some will stray.

This was heartbreaking to watch. I was unaware Herons ate other birds. I have caught both Blue and White Herons on camera on many occasions. I have witnessed them actually hanging out or co-habituating with the Ducks in our park. I have only witnessed theses Herons foraging for Fish, never other birds. Your commentary did specifically state, Gray Heron, but seemed to suggest Herons in general ate small fowl.
Your article has given me the inspiration to learn more. I’ve always admired these ‘Big Birds.’ I am now intrigued and want to know much more about them. I am completely fascinated by this creature.

the herons have no concept that they're inflicting pain on another creature. They don't have the capacity for sympathy or empathy. They grab their prey by the neck or limbs instinctively, and as shown to do by their mother, because it's the quickest way to kill an animal & the safest way so they don't get kicked, clawed & injured themselves by an animal thrashing around for its life. The heron wants to eat as soon as possible, they are not deriving joy out of the killing part, nor do they control how fast or slow it takes. They do the best they can. Things don't die instantly like in the movies...real life is typically slow & painful.

The same way a lion will eat a baby zebra infront of its mother, the same way a male duck will rape a female duck and kill her ducklings to make sure his genes get passed on, the same way an eagle digs its claws into a goose and plucks it alive. The herons do eat fish 90% of the time but in the breeding season young birds form some of its diet due to the easy accessibilty. Ducks have large broods to ensure some will make it.

Come on people it’s nature. We have to many geese in our neighborhood due to predators like hawks, foxes, and owls being killed.
    The heron has predators too!

Those ducks are really rethinking their anti 2nd amendment stance as they wait for law enforcement to arrive and save their ducklings.

Imagine how dark - yet warm and kind of snug - the inside of that heron's stomach is. How the protease enzymes and dilute hydrochloric acid will immediately attack the eyes of those cute little ducklings (I expect the downy feathers will eventually break down but it'll take a while and the ducklings will all probably already be dead by the time the gastric juice is really flowing and working on the whole of the ducklings' bodies' flesh). The world couldn't work any other way though, could it really? For things to live, other things have to die.

@ Milton Moore Morbid behaviour? You mean natural, surely. I wrote it as a joke. For a second though, consider gazillions and gazillions of life-forms are born every day. They replace the gazillions and gazillions that die every day. The reproductive act provides a wonderful sensation in orgasm. The death of all those animals will almost certainly involve a great deal of pain for the majority of them. FEW animals die peacefully 'of old age' (other than humans). The animal eating the deceased animal (/ still living animal) will often get a fair degree of pleasure through taste. THIS IS LIFE. THIS IS HOW PLANET EARTH WORKS. PLEASURE & PAIN. Enjoy it while you can! ;)
