      @AmethystExpert In fact, birds protect their chicks. Even in hopeless situations against reptiles, mammals and birds larger in size. At least they try to scare or injure and save other children. Cause it's effective on distance

    Mallards are relatively passive when it comes to defending their nests and chicks. If this Heron had tried this with Canadian Goose goslings it would most likely ended up very different. Canadian geese are very aggressive when it comes to defending their eggs and young. Interesting video though.

      Geese in general are pretty protective of their nests and territory. Even taking on swans (which doesn't always end well.)
      But this Heron is smart, it knows this is easy prey that will feed it well.
      Hopefully the parents of these ducklings learn to hide their nests and offspring better, or find a territory with less predators

      It appears that the purpose is to get the duckling by the head for gulping. It seems that each time the duckling is dunked, the heron is slowly but surely moving it into a position so it can be swallowed headfirst.

    I thought they were gentle, only ate small fish kind of birds. Herons don't give a damn.. Baby or no baby. Dipping the baby in water before swallowing it whole 😮. No different from a lion, or cheetah eating a baby gazelle. Life is the greatest teacher. IT doesn't favor a side.. IT just IS 💜

    I know this is a part of nature, but it is very sad and cruel watching that poor little baby trying to survive the attack of this huge bird, and watching life leave it's body. I thought it was finally out of it's misery, and then it started moving again. That poor little baby....

      I still don't understand why all of those adult ducks did not attack this heron. Ducks and geese can be very nasty when they need to be, and those 4 or 5 adults probably could have scared off that heron.

      I live on the lake and there's a small marsh to the side with many ducks and herons. I've never seen this before. I thought the herons just ate fish and frogs. I've seen alot of ducks with missing legs assumed it was snapping turtles guess it was probably these stone cold killers. My wife won't be so excited to see the herons role in after i show her this video lol.

    It’s ok. Bald eagles, great-horned owls, gyr falcons, peregrine falcons etc take their fair share of adult great-blue herons and their chicks.

    The heron likes to dunk its food it water to make it easier to swallow. However, duck's feathers are waterproof. So rhe frustration and initial confusion is funny to see on the heron, who patiently continues to do it knowing eventually it'll pay off.

    No supermarkets needed or: cookers, knives forks etc......just pop out catch your food, swallow in a couple of gulps.....no washing up, shopping lists etc. Maybe the animal kingdom have got less hassle than humans🤔

    Well, birds are closely related to dinosaurs....so I guess I will think of it like a Tyrannosaur eating a baby Stegasaur..... that makes it more acceptable intellectually
